So that's the first two hours (and full show) of any wrestling product I've watched since WM and overall it was incredibly more interesting/entertaining than anything I've seen from WWE in years.
Yes, there was a lot of talent I didn't know, and it wasn't all great and had some slow segments/spots, but I'm actually really looking forward to next week's episode. If only to just see where things go from here, and ideally, long term they continue to improve/deliver on what we got tonight, and they develop/flesh out and I learn and invest more into the characters and feuds. One thing I loved was that they setup so many potential future feuds and matches, and (without having the show be a complete clusterfuck,) each separate story line and feud wasn't treated and didn't feel completely disjointed or unconnected to the others and the overall show. This show was a great start. |

I wouldn't object to Mike Tenay doing a one off pre ppv show with JR and Tony.

Fairly impressed with Penelope Ford. I've not seen her actually wrestle before

He’s got the look, he’s fine in the ring and he’s got that MMA legitimacy now. Especially with the size of most guys today, if booked right, he’s gonna be an awesome throwback heel. |

You mean the same tweets and posts that WWE repeatedly hypes up and focuses on during their own shows, instead of focusing on improving their own shitty, repetitive, and uninteresting WWE characters and matches that WWE shits the bed with, and then usually later actually shits on by their awful booking, writing, and commentary, especially once they move up to their own premier shows? Those same tweets and posts?

I assumed there wasn’t any way this new wrestling company, even with the hype behind it, had a shot at beating a show with the WWE name in the ratings. The clear interest advantage online tonight does make me wonder though. |

Yeah, I'll be curious to see if they can keep improving and build off of this.

They’ve also got the star power advantage. I just don’t know how much that matters since the existing mainstream audience pool isn’t exactly huge at the moment.

I noticed how instead of devoting whole additional segments to moving forward a storyline, they instead slotted them into existing segments. This really stuck out with Mox/Omega, but it's also the case for the women's title match where they both (awkwardly) had Britt Baker on commentary and then had Nyla Rose attack Michael Nakazawa and attempt to take out Riho after the match
It lets the show move along much more comfortably without sacrificing giving people a reason to tune in next week. |

The Dark match 8 man tag would have been better than the MJF match. timewise they could have got it in. The MJF match just felt out of place

Even in terms of amount of stuff in the Top 10, took NXT a while to get more than 1 thing trending highly. Cole vs Gargano was a bust if the idea was for it to help generate more top trends in favor of NXT. |

I am not sure what you are trying to say. Tweets matter because WWE says they matter, Tweets matter because AEW had more? One show was better than the other show. Tweets don't mean anything. |

Something that I've noticed on the 2nd viewing is there's long air time where Tony is quiet. I wonder if he's reviewing the notes where he has to go interview between the matches? Hopefully they can utilize Crhis Van Vliet more for that role going forward.

To be fair, you could just pull the ol' Nitro trick: Nitro used to re-air later. In this case, couldn't one just watch NXT on the network whenever and watch AEW live?

Debating whether I should go to the Indy or Chicago show. Indy is a hop skip but I'm sure the Chi Town crowd would make that show funner.

Compairing AEW to NXT makes AEW seem like bush league. Tacticlaly a smart move from the WWE to put then against one another.

It takes awhile. Just think of it like Scott Steiner after he first cropped and dyed the mullett. It initially seemed like he went too far in the other direction. Like, from fat guy to crack whore. But now, I'm used to it.

It's WWE. They'll spin it by no-selling any of the AEW stuff and say that they had "one of the top trends" and ignore everything sandwiching it. Might even compare it to the next top trends that have nothing to do with wrestling that it beat.

As much as I can dig all the gushing about Schiavone in this thread, I can still recall when he was phoning it in the last few years on WCW TV. Calling everything a sidewalk slam and whatnot. Interesting turn from touting him ironically to genuine nostalgic feels.

True. From a strictly tactical standpoint, it especially means they don't have the pressure to improve the overall shitty booking and storytelling from RAW or Smackdown except for whatever pressure may come from either FOX or USA themselves. And anytime AEW does better, they can just say "Yeah, but they beat our minor league, so it means nothing" and continue patting themselves on the back... neverminding that NXT is generally their A show, as much as people don't want to admit it.

I thought it was a good show and I typically don't watch anything other than WWE. I don't like how they have a commentator with a mask, that's so silly. I also can't stand big impact moves not being finishers. The first match seemed to have like 5 spots where the match should have ended. I just don't like the reliance on false finishes that these "minor" leagues do.
I do think this was a great start. JR and Shiavoni were great. Last edited by Stickman; 10-03-2019 at 10:18 PM. |

Did not watch "live", but just finished watching now.... show was an alright start... nothing overly goofy other than me thinking "lol the minute any casual curious person tuned in and saw Sammy Guevara in a panda hat, they just immediately turned it off"
Otherwise it was good. Nothing too outstanding, but nothing that made me want to kill myself. Was "PrettyCool" to hear Jim Ross and especially Tony Schiavone again. Oh, and in Canada they did not go to picture-in-picture for the commercial breaks, but just went to commercial. |
