Dale Sables pops were big titty pops, could've been anyone that was really hot with big titties. Plus she was a bitch. But she didn't draw guys into the arena.

And the answer to the topic question I think is absolutely Vince McMahon followed closely by Triple H.

Sable did work, but I think that actually says a lot about what didn't.

Even when he assumed the leadership of DX he felt secondary the group as a whole was a big deal but nobody in that group was Main Event material at least not without Shawn Michaels. He got his main event push literally after all the big guns had done everything. And by the time he got up there wrestling was cooling off. Just to remind myself that this is completely true I have old TV guides where they featured wrestlers on them. Triple H isn't on any of the covers he isn't even mentioned inside the book.

I'd go as far as to say that Triple H, both in front of the camera and behind it, is a big part of why wrestling cooled off. He put the block on lots of embers and he also sucked as a babyface in 2002 and doing his Ric Flair cosplay.

He was the Roddy Piper/mega heel of the late Attitude Era. Without him as a heel, could The Rock have carried WWF in Austin's absence? I think not because there would have been no hot main event programs. He isn't a white hot headlining baby face, but he is damn sure a white hot main event heel that is just as important as the baby face. I'd also argue the HHH-led DX was more over, a bigger draw, and more significant than the original DX. Also, being the #3 banana behind the 2 biggest stars of all time isn't a bad spot to be. Roddy Piper was always in the shadow of Hogan and Savage popularity wise.
He was shoehorned into that position and Foley needed to bend over backwards to get him there. 2000 was hot and Triple H did his best work that year, but Benoit drew as much as Triple H did going against The Rock. There's this idea that he, himself, is a draw, but Triple H didn't sell out that arena in India either. Triple H was not critical to The Rock drawing in 2000 -- Rocky has always been worlds ahead in terms of star power and charisma. That's why The Rock conquered Hollywood and Triple H only did Blade 3.

Piper drew money; DX didn't. WWE revisionist history would tell you that he was a star. They have presented him like one even when there are no returns to it (1997-1999; 2002-).

I really just skimmed this thread, but what the hell? Piper drew money and DX didn't? I thought DX was over as fuck and also sold a ton of merchandise.

Funny you mention that. That is a bit more of revisionist history, just the other way.

Some people still refuse to believe that CM Punk got a bigger reaction that night than the umteenth reunion of DX, so much so that "blank OUTPOPPED DX!" has become some lower tier meme.

It wasn't what WWE wanted, but it's what they got.

Which still makes for another strike against HHH.

I was being quite dramatic. They weren't giant ratings draws and weren't as significant as the company makes out. HHH disappears for quite a while in 1998 and no one misses him.
