2015 and onwards hit a new low. At least 2014 had the Daniel Bryan stuff and The Shield going backwards. Tough times, don’t get me wrong — but they would get tougher.

How is 2012 leading? I’d say it was the best year. Rock was back and made WrestleMania actually feel like a big deal again, Lesnar returned to add some actual star power, that ridiculously good Extreme Rules PPV, The Shield debuted and, of course, THE RYBACK.

Now way it was even close to as bad as the nothing years that followed.

That’s probably the right call.

Everything post 2014 just kinda runs together. 2012 stands out as having some outstanding stuff and the Daniel Bryan story makes 2013/2014 stand out in my mind. Past that, nothing stands out. It’s really hard to differentiate between those last 5 years.

if someone would have said the worst year in the previous decade was 2001 because WCW/ECW folded leading to the lack of competition that ultimately stagnated wrestling and ended the attitude era it would have been a perfectly valid response despite some absolute banger matches and programs that year.

the largest negative impact occured at a fixed point in time. if we're talking historical impact of a year how is it not valid to measure the dacade by the moment that molded the business the most? i dont see how popping for RVDs debut in 01 or The Rock returning in 2012 are more significant than these doomsday moments.

here's an absurdist example taken to the largest possible conclusion:

a nuclear bomb is detonated in 2021. 1000 years from now the cockroaches debate what year was the worst for humanity. cockroach A says its clearly 2021. cockroach B says it cant be. the human race didmt starve to death from the nuclear fallout for another 4 years; think about how much worse it got as their skin melted and the giant mutated cockroaches ate their children.

i mean yeah what came after was a real shit show but none of that happens without this clear major incident. you dont get B without A.

Voted for 2019 because that is when I stopped watching. The superstar shake up thing basically ended the brand split after it was still so new... the split renewed my interest in smackdown which was actually good television at first (Cena/AJ/Ambrose) when it was finally tossed away in 2019 with Roman appearing on both shows I gave up.

You’re really over hyping the effect that 3 hour Raws had on the product. The downward trend was starting long before that and there’s no reason to suggest things were going to turn around before adding the 3rd hour. It’s a relatively arbitrary event. It wasn’t the doomsday moment you think it was. You still get to B without A.

3 hours doesn’t help at all though, and 3 hour Nitros did largely suck. It’s too hard to emphasize acts over that period of time. If you try and get Wrestler A over in a segment, but the time you get to the end of the show it’s already been booted from your immediate memory. There’s no true gestation period for things to emotionally resonate.
