Rate the Game: Week 120
What's cracking this morning, TPWW? Thank you for joining me on this, the 120th edition of Rate the Game, as we close out the month of July. Time to take our minds off the heat for a bit. It'll still be there when we're done here. Last week we dove into the second entry in Capcom's survival horror zombie-fest, Resident Evil 2. Compared to the rest of the titles of the franchise already on our list, how well does it perform? Did Leon and Claire have enough game in them to make a strong impact? It's leaderboard time!
There is, indeed, some strong game here with Resident Evil 2 as it earns itself a nice 4.14 average. It's not high enough to be part of that promised land of the elite but it's more than enough to earn itself the honor of being the highest ranked Resident Evil game on our leaderboard. Perhaps another Resident Evil game can make an attempt to overcome it? Well, we need to see if such a game is even part of our remaining pool. For that we go to the pool, still occupying the glorious BOWL OF DOOM! It's time to go diving again and see what we're rating this week. Shall we? Yeah, that's some hot pulling out action right there. This week on Rate the Game: Week 120 we've got more Bungie action on our plate. No, not another Halo title. It's the other sci-fi shooter epic from their house, Destiny! This was Bungie's next big thing after hanging things up with Halo. How'd it do in your eyes? Was it everything Bungie hoped it would be? Does it fall short of what they accomplished with Halo? This forum is your...forum to let us know. Let's do this rating thing. And then there were five. Until next week! No matter what may happen to me, just remember Lzzy Hale gave me the bedroom eyes... ...again. |

Played that game so much, the HUD was burned into my old plasma tv.
I'll give it a 5. What the hell. |

Lock Jaw, please compile a list of games you've played and rate them on a scale of 0 - 7.3

The success of destiny has negatively impacted the entire industry. Other contributors have been present as well but the live service success in destiny has inspired most major studios to attempt the model as well as led to games that arent live services to be released in similarly unfinished states with drip feed content that should have been released day 1 being trickled out over the 1st year after launch. When many of these projects fail, and most do, the financial blow to the parent company has led to many studios being sold and/or shut down completely.
Its one of the worst games ever made. |

Other than a few other games on and off, Destiny/D2 have been about the only games I've really been playing actively since 2014. I hate this game, it's my favorite.

That's a fairly reasonable percentage. I can't really expect everyone to have played all the games in this list.

Funny thing is I actually had pre-ordered this game. It was on the cusp of the Xbox One being released and this was Bungie's next big game post-Halo so I was curious and excited. Unfortunately, the more I learned about it the more that excitement died down. It didn't sound like fun. Ultimately it got to the point where I decided to cancel my pre-order and I just got my Xbox One with the Master Chief Collection and The Evil Within. I think I made the right call.

Are we rating this based on how it launched or where it ended up? Cause those are two different scores for me. |

Thats valid absolutely. I still fall into the camp of what did happen opposed to what could (or would) have happened. Still you arent wrong. Games prices havent kept up with inflation for 20 years and all the while production costs have surpassed film. After market monetization is an inevitability. Thankfully the indy market popped up and filled the gap.

Eh, gave it a three.
I remember it enough to enjoy the gun action, but also disappointed at the time requirement for raiding. I'd say this is about the time I accepted I wouldn't have time to be a hardcore-gamer anyore, and started my evolution into a filthy casual. I don't like what they've done with Destiny 2, especially after I paid for it. Shit happens I guess..... Tried jumping in a week or so ago, and it suffers from the Free-to-play, everything-all-at-once menus, which feels REALLY overwhelming. This is D1 tho, so I'll stop. |

Decided to base it on how it launched. Gave it a 2.
Non-existent story. Nowhere near enough endgame content. Armor was kinda bland and boring. I think the gunplay in destiny 2 is the best and most polished of any fps, but it wasn't quite there yet. Strikes and exotics were fun, and it is very pretty so it doesn't get a 1. |

This is going to bring out the old man in me but I just miss the days of buying a game and what came in the box was it. That was the game. It was done. No muss, no fuss. And it worked! Something like this seems like it would just give me a headache. I have to ask, with the first game seemingly so vast and what not, especially with DLC, was Destiny 2 even really necessary?

There are still games coming out complete. Team Asano has been taking that mantra with religious fervor and for my tastes theyre producing the best games currently from any major studio

Most indy games are a complete package that din't need multiple patches to function properly.
As for live service models, there isn't anything inherently wrong with the concept, it's just very easily turned into a predatory monetary tactic. |

One thing I forgot to add that's worth noting. Art direction is pretty important to me. That's a big reason why I love Netherealm games, despite them being mechanically inferior to other fighters.
The Destiny franchise absolutely kills it in this department for me. Some of the coolest looking weapons and armor sets of any loot based game. Incredible enviornments and great enemy design. It has that blend of Sci-fi, western, and fantasy that makes Star Wars stand out, but it does it in its own unique way. |

Artistry over realism is a big thing for me. It doesn't matter how photorealistic something is or high the poly count is if what they're representing doesn't look appealing. It's why I call Mirror's Edge the best-looking game on the consoles of its generation. I'd rather look at the city of Glass, this bright, strange world that almost has a character than the war-torn landscapes of something like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I dare say Silent Hill 2 and 3 on the God damn Playstation 2 look infinitely more appealing than fucking Silent Hill: Downpour. It's not just about the technology, it's about how you use it.

That last sentence man......
My son has started doing development a bit, and the way the simplest things "interact" behind the scenes to cause a basic interaction in front of our eyes is fucking wild. |
