I kind of hope Redknapp gets the job and fails as it would be hilarious to see Fleet St tie themselves in knots trying to criticise him when they normally can't remove themselves collectively from his rectum

Question is, can the country finally admit to itself that the squad is as much the problem as whatever manager we have in charge?

I've been busy, so I haven't been able to post my thoughts on the US game. I'll do that first, then move on to England.
Looking back at the past 4 games the US played, it was certainly a game of two halfs for them. It was like night and day. They showed signs of brillance and the best US soccer I've ever seen and then there were times where they played like absolute shit. Ghana owned them in the first half yesterday. I mean they made the US look like some 3rd rate team that didn't even belong. But that happened in all thier four games. I think the passing game and team play is what killed them the most when they were bad. They need to work on moving the ball a lot quicker. That was a major weakness, but you saw they have potential to be great at that. I think we've still got a long long way to go to match up with the world in this game, but I am proud of them. I just hope they added a few more soccer fans in this country. Now on to England. I am not one for changing the rules of a game, especialy futbol, which is a wordly game. But come on with that Lampard goal. Yes, England played like shit for much of the game and Germany was brilliant, but look what happened. England gets all this momentum and scores a beauty on a header. Then 60 seconds later, Lampard sends one of the best shots I've seen in this Cup through the goal. England was riding a wave of momentum and then it was stripped in all of 2 seconds by the ref. I hate when you leave the game in the hands of the refs. 2-2 is a much different game mentaly then 2-1. I do believe you would of seen the same England team on the field in that 2nd half had it been 2-2. That stuff just drives me crazy. You have to add replay or a challenge (like American football) for that. And that's not to take anything away from Germany. They played awesome and deserved the win. They played very well together as a team and caught England off guard so many times. Excellent play by them. Argentina vs Gemany should be good. |

How about the extra linesmen deal they had with the Europa League? Or an official behind the goal. It should stop outrageous calls like todays and the whole Henry handball thing.

Don't know if it will work outside the UK, and you'll have to put up with the BBC talking more about England than anything to do with the game. They have Seedorf though |

It doesn't mean enough to them. The English players mentality. As for Capello, we've just been destroyed by a decent German side. Frankly, if he can't do better with our so-called 'golden generation', I don't want him anywhere near our young players. The players had no sense of togetherness, they clearly didn't like the system being played and there was open revolt against him. I'm sure you have some reason beyond 'England are not a good team' that would justify him carrying on? |

To suggest Beckham would do better by giving them passion is nonsense. I can't think of anyone who'd entertain taking the job that would do a better job than Fabio. |

Looking at the last lot of managers, none of them have manager in the prem or know the style that suits those players before they come in. My shortlist would be: Hodgson Redknapp O'Neil Any of those guys know English football inside out, know the players already and what they are capable of and have that passion that's been missing from our team since the 90's |

It seems to me that England is having a lot of the same problems with their World Cup squads that the United States had with its Olympic basketball teams before Beijing. Multi-millionaire superstars that see international play as more of a chore than a privilege, coaches that are more like celebrities than actual instructors, etc.
I forget the guy's name, but the Englishman on ESPN's post-game coverage seemed to describe the situation that way. He basically said they need to blow the whole thing up and start from scratch, because whatever they're doing just isn't working. |

And I don't consider Maclaren to be a Prem manager by the time he got that job, he'd turned into a Sven clone and represented nothing close to our leagues style |

Venables also had 2 years of friendlies to put a side together and home advantage.
The 2nd point makes no sense at all. He was the first English manager in forever to win a trophy, took Middlesbrough far in Europe, by pretty common consensus was a good choice. In fact the press couldn't wait to coronate him after Sven. Do you not see history repeating itself? Seriously? |

Well, I voiced my misgivings from the offset and although I take no satisfaction from it, England didn't fail to deliver.
Where did it go wrong? Qualifying - Best qualifying I can remember but let's face it, something is wrong if you come out not knowing the best formation, best goalkeeper and that nobody is better up front than Emile Heskey Squad Selection - Adam Johnson, Scott Parker, Darren Bent. Symbols of what went wrong here. England relied too much on injured, recovering from injury, non match fit and out of form players. Fantastic sign to send out that you can have an awesoe season but those that are shit or average will always get in ahead of you. No plan B - This is what really takes the piss. If you insist on taking those with question marks there must be another plan if it all goes wrong. It's fair to say that outside the first eleven, there were no impact players except for maybe Joe Cole who looked likely to change games. Ferdinand dropping out appears to have been catastrophic to the England team. Good player fair enough but there has to be someone not far off who can fill in effectively. Preparation - John Terry, take a bow son. Match selection - Sorry but this is where Capello got it wrong. Green was obviously a mistake in the first game but that comes back to an earlier point. Milner obviously wasn't fit for the first game but again this comes back to an early point (no plan b). I can go without seeing Shaun Wright Phillips playing for England again at right wing, nevermind left wing. Letting Carragher back into the team sent out all the wrong signals for me. I didn't think Lennon was too bad but he was doomed as soon as the Gerrard and Lampard unable to play together card reared it's ugly head again. Heskey from the start urrrgh. Heskey as a sub double urrrgh. Heskey as a sub with no wingers triple urrrgh. Group - Should have won it. It would have helped build confidence for the knockout stages. USA you can forgive as the opener, Algeria is the game that they screwed up in. Today - Wow, the Germans had pace in attack that was devastating. They had the creativity and craft that England have sorely missed this tournament. They have a system that benefits the team as opposed to fitting in with the individuals. You basically can't give teams like that two goal leads. Yeah we had a case with Lampard's 'goal' but unless the Germans capitulated the game would have been far from over. Terry and Upson were made to look very average. Barry wasn't as effective as he had been previously and the diamond didn't offer enough width (unsuprisingly). When that's not working, it's hard to change. The mentality of the Englad squad needs to change. Too many 'veterans' who know it all and undermine the manager. Capello could do no wrong before the world cup so where the players get off telling him how to do his job just prior and during the World Cup is beyond me. Yeah, have an opinion but don't screw up the team because of it. I don't see one English manager that has the ability or achievements to be a success as England coach. That might be partly down to the Premier League or how ridiculously pressured the job is nowadays. People like Harry Redknapp can fuck off. Spurs were one of the worst teams I saw at the Stadium of Light this season. Bit of an anti climax even without the usual England 'hype'. There was aalways a hope that it would click back into place and they would finally get going in the World Cup. You don't get second chances at the World Cup though, everything has to be dead on 'perfect'. |

The great things about the Germans was how well the attacking players linked and the way they played eachother in/cut it back etc. The general unseflish nature of their play which lead to their goals.
Where as with England whenever Rooney, Gerrard or Lampard got the ball all they did was shoot. The inability of any of our players to use the ball intelligently was very disappointing. And Harry Redknapp would be a shit England manager. He wouldn't stand up to Gerrard/Lampard/Terry/Rooney etc. His whole management strategy at club level is to just sign lots of players; he isn't tactical. At Portsmouth he once said he didn't give the players instructions because "professional players know what they're doing, they don't need to be told", so he just told them "to go out and play". |

ESPN and others are reporting the English FA want to wait 2 weeks before making a decision about Capello.
If they were to fire him, how much money would he be getting since his contract was a huge one and there is no way he would accept to resign to lose it all ? |

An absolute arseload of money, didn't they renew it just before the world cup anyway. I really really really want Harry Redknapp in charge.
