"Joker" - 4/4

I wasn't excited to see this until I was holding it in my hands. I suppose besides the troubled production history I had no detailed knowledge of it and no clue as to how the plot would be treated or how the story would be adapted this time around.
I feel confident after seeing it in full that this wasn't what anyone could have expected when they went in.
I wasn't expecting to watch an almost Freudian character study with a sympathetic take on a presumed monster. I wasn't expecting to empathise or to agree with any political or social themes but such is the quality of the film that I have to admit that I did start to wonder towards the ending just how easily reality can be twisted into folklore like that.

From the moment the film gets going you know you are watching from Arthur's point of view, everything feels a little bit off. Everything in Arthur's life is like a worse version of reality. You know Gotham is a shithole from Batman, but Arthur's Gotham is even shittier. Arthur gets one broke parent, no millionaires with private butlers here. In fact Arthur's whole life, from the way he is treated as a child to the way he is unsure of everything about himself as an adult until he finally emerges is in direct opposition with the Batman character we all know.
Arthur sees himself as the underdog and it is hard to argue in this film. His neuroses are alive on the screen, visions and versions of events can't be trusted. I was particularly enamoured with the girlfriend fantasy, I thought the way that pitch-perfect and was used to full effect. He's not out to hurt anyone, but he will because he just can't see himself honestly. He is his own unreliable narrator.
Joaquin Phoenix was physically incredible in this role, he could rival Christian Bale for The Machinist with what he does to himself here. Not only is he physically perfect though, he has every idiosyncrasy refined to an unsettling, sea-sick degree. He becomes a nervous, emaciated, misanthropic anti-hero here and in the midst of some truly appalling violence he emerges a just and true champion for those that would follow him into the Gotham of the future.

Some say there are two sides to every story but that seems low to me even just counting Joker's side.

Sonic - 6.5/10 - Decent, an above average film that was better than I was expecting. Had some decent comedy and is definitely set up for a sequel, and by the looks of the box office numbers from the weekend, could very well be in the cards.

SPOILER: show
the misdirection might be the most brilliant piece of writing ive ever seen. Audiences are told prior that its about the mansons so you enter the film with built in drama but NONE of the tension is generated by the film itself; its all created by the veiwer so when the film subverts that expection and reveals that "once upon a time" was literal its a wild revelation. Never seen anyone work an audience like that.

I would hate to have the factoid spoiled prior because my concern is without the premise established externally the film has no stakes and potentially no plot.
10/10

while its true that the tension dies on repeat viewings what remains is its wonderful characters, acting, cinematography, and stage design. This is a film that gets richer over time as the individual flavors and nuances are able to shine after youve stripped the plot away.

one of those movies thats its "how have i never watched this?" ADR from that era can be jarring at times and it does suffer from the fact ive seen decadesof films that built off what was done here but its objectively a work of art.

The Godfather pt2 - 10/10

what a hauntingly dark journey this was. Truly outstanding. The subplot of Don Vito in his youth juxtaposed with the final scene really highlights who Don Vito was and why all 4 of his children ultimately fail. Each are an incomplete vestige of their father. Sonny is his rage, his fearlesaness. Tommy is his loyalty. Fredo is his love. Michael is his cunning.

But each son is incomplete. Theyre swallowed by the shadow of their fathers greatness and all ultimately are alone because of it.

well...this was unfortunate. Im not sure which was more egregious the incest subplot or the helicopter machine gun attack. Feels like Puzzo wrote this while watching diehard on vacation in Kentucky. All the subtlety, nuance and symbolism from the 1st two films are gone and what is left is a cartoon version of the previous entries. The fact this was penned by the same hand is baffling.

Got a chance to sit down to watch "The Cabin in the Woods" finally. Not something I'd watch again but it's a blast. They should've kept more a mystery but I don't have that much to complain about. 3 out of 4 stars.

Yes, maybe I'm wrong to say it or just being generous.. And why am I saying that? Well, spoilers ahead if you wanna read or just go see it for yourself.

SPOILER: show
A. 3 strangers all had similar car fucked up accidents.. Samantha, the woman in the coat says she came from 1962 and is driving through Hampshire to go to the hospital cos she's giving birth with hubby, while the bad-ass 80's chick grocery robber Jody claims it's 1985 and she was on her way to Seattle, while Tom, the main guy says his car got stuck in a ditch and was on his way to South Dakota and it's the year 2011.

B. Samantha says she's from 1962 era cos she hasn't seen the new currency of money that was printed in 1980's on Jody's coat while she is from 1985. And Tom, well, his coat was made in 2011. Also, they even noticed the cabin had a radio that looked like it was used from World War era, plus, a bomb shelter with food/beans and liquor all dating back to fucking 1930's and 40's. All of the labels on it are in GERMAN. WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT ALL ABOUT!??!

C. Then comes another character who's a German soldier with a rifle gun and taunts the 3 strangers that all of them had the same lockets with a picture of the woman that looked like she's 30 plus... WHO THE FUCK WAS THAT?

D. And it turns out Samantha the coat woman is the one in the picture, then tells Jody, that she gave birth to a daughter with the SAME FUCKING FIRST NAME!!! And the last name unfortunately is German as well. Neumann. Also, it's later revealed the German soldier is the FATHER of the mother who gave birth to the future 80's bad-rebellious chick Jody!! HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

E. Everytime the characters try to escape the dark woods outside the cabin no matter where they go, they end up back in the cabin. I like how one of them references the fucked shit like they're in a Pac-Man level game or in a Deliverance movie.

I won't tell the ending.. I could go on and on about it.. Man, never have I enjoyed a film that's sooo fucking unexpected, I didn't see that one coming.. Also, pay attention to what happens in the start of the movie with the grocery guy being held at gunpoint and the characters keep on asking
SPOILER: show
"WHAT'S IN THE SAFE?!?"
Then, POOOF!! You're in for a fucking surprise.

8/10.

To the films credit the climax is well constructed and Michael gets what he has coming to him in poetic fashion.

Midsommar -7/10

SPOILER: show
Tension and cinematography are good but the films broad strokes are very paint by numbers. This i could ignore if it were for the issue of the films central point: Dani is burdened by Christian and she needs to "clense the evil."

For 3 years this character emotionally blackmailed him to stay with her and yet its her who is the captive based off...him not attending to her emotional needs? And that at its core is the moral of the fairy tale we have here.

Its a fine film as far as the tone it aims to set but as a piece of writing its rubbish. Clearly written by someone who had been hurt and hastly wrote through the tears to make a point thats selfish and tone deaf. The films true saving grace is its alegory is so muddled that most viewers wont even catch the story at all.
