Rate the Game: Week 59
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! Doing another early edition of this as we're expecting some pretty awful weather and I'd like to be able to put this out before any possible power outages occur. Which would also prevent us from playing any games, those on this list or otherwise; and that's sad. Speaking of games that are on the list, let's tackle last week's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and see where it goes on our ever-growing leaderboard! It's been a while since something's cracked the top ten and surely one of the biggest FPS titles in the last few decades would manage to achieve that, no? Let's take a look at the results!
Well, no. Much like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune a week prior, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare barely cracks the top 40 and occupies the number 38 spot with a nice little palindromic average score of 3.33. TPWW seemed pretty split on that particular game. I wonder if it holds true for the Call of Duty series as a whole. Well, maybe another Call of Duty title will be this week's game? One way to find out. Let's go to the .gif this time with yours truly going MASK FREE finally! Truly a historic moment in the annals of Rate the Game. Let's check the game out.... ...and we've got it! This weeks game for this week's edition is the gun-crazy, FPS/RPG combo known as Borderlands! It's more shoot-'em-up action as we delve into the alien world of Pandora and the Vault Hunters who dare to dream of its loot! How did this game work for you? Rate and vote and discuss and share and stay healthy, my good people! Until next week.... No matter what may happen to me, just remember Lzzy Hale gave me the bedroom eyes... ...again. I liked the art style. I dug the "gajillion guns" tag line that went with the game. The characters and classes were cool. I jumped into it late because I all heard was that this game was quite the sleeper hit.
The whole concept was great. I give it a 4. It got better with 2 and 3. |

I wanted to give this a 5, because it's one of my favorite game series of all time...but...the BIG issue that holds it back from a 5 for me is the story. It's too bare-bones and not very well fleshed out or explained to the player what is happening, not to mention the infamous missing third act. The gunplay is fun, there are a bit too many fetch quests, but the DLCs, excepting _Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot_ are all a blast in general...I mean, who's played who hasn't taken advantage of the Claptrap DLC loot room infinitely after the story or run the "farmory" glitch in General Knoxx? I still have the GotY with its quality-of-life improvements on my PS4. I'm still completely befuddled by how they didnt fix not being able to move in Fight For Your Life in the GotY...if there's no enemy or the only one runs off before you kill them, you're screwed. Minor pet peeve from a game that has given me a lifetime of nostalgia.

3.
Didn't find it to be as entertaining to play unlike the sequel although the two biggest reasons for that was due to playing the sequel first and the game having a wonky split screen feature that didn't allow horizontal to be an option based on the tv you had. Think the farthest I ever got through the first game was about a quarter to a third of the way in before not having the desire to keep playing. |

Plays well enough, but it honestly bored me with its environments. Lots of barren nothingness. Just couldn't get into it. |

Borderlands is my shit. Love all these games. Gonna give this a 4. Can't give it a 5 when part 2 is so much better.

Sirens FTW...
Except Salvador in 3. Gunzerker was my fucking jam and I ran through the hardest difficulty on that sumbitch. Remember finding a way to "cheese" a raid boss. Pyro Pete I think? Ended up getting dual.... whatever fucking pistols shot like 10 rounds at once. Took that and a slag gun to the hardest difficultly and shit melted |

Read about Jamie Lee Curtis being cast as Dr. Tannis for the movie adaptation. I mean, I could see the Jamie Lee Curtis of 25 years ago doing it. Cate Blanchett as Lilith is another poor choice.

Went back over all the polls and re-did them to double-check for accuracy. Fixed a few things that I got wrong and ended up with less ties than before. The leaderboard should be 100% accurate now.

Gonna go with 4 on this one. As a general rule I don't like open world games with shit tons of side quests and all the typical stuff that goes along with that genre. That being said, this game allowed me to overlook all of those problems because of the charm. It was funny, had a neat graphical style, side characters that I enjoyed talking to, guns galore, and a great title to play with a friend. However, like Fignuts pointed out, there's not much that's interesting to look at despite the graphics. The story isn't particularly engaging and it can get repetitive. It's a game best played in short time frames. That being said, I'm glad I played it and it opened the door for me to play the even better sequel so there's not too much to complain about.

Oh, and as for Pete, are you referencing the grenade jump up to the ledge so he follows you and then you hide behind a giant post to block his corrosive and fire nova attacks? I've definitely done that, but he takes forever to kill on OP10, so I'd usually end up doing the exploit on OP10 as all I was generally after was those sweet sweet Seraph crystals. Fun times. |
