I can enjoy a standalone match based solely on the story they tell in the ring. I watch random matches out of context all the time.
It will always be more enjoyable to watch if there's a good build, or high stakes, but I don't necessarily need it to enjoy the match. To clarify, I'm not saying it's okay that the matches don't mean anything. It sucks these guys are killing themselves in the ring and nobody in creative seems to give a shit. I can't control that though, so I may as well enjoy it for what it is. |

A story told in the ring has meaning. Im not saying you need a greater angle to tie into. Your match means nothing if you dont connect with people. Thats the metric.
205 doesnt mean anything. |

I wonder if that's possible with the current WWE mainstream audience. I'm sure there are plenty of people they do connect with. They've connected with me when I watch. Just not with enough people apparently.
But I don't know if mainstream audiences of this generation can connect with a bunch of guys going out there and putting on good matches with no context. I mean they're basically doing the same thing they did in WCW. Just going out there and wrestling, with a little bit of story and angles here and there. But audiences don't seem to be responding the same way people did the the cruiserweights of the 90's. And you can't blame it on 205 being an out of the way, seperate show because they started out as a part of Raw and there wasn't enough of a response there either. |

Do you believe the work on 205 is on par with the 90s cruiserweights?

The roster is also mostly guys who don't wrestle a "cruiserweight" style at all... Humberto Carrillo is maybe the only one left who does
Akira Tozawa Ariya Daivari The Brian Kendrick Drew Gulak Gentleman Jack Gallagher Humberto Carrillo Mike Kanellis Oney Lorcan Samir Singh Sunil Singh Tony Nese |

When they held the show before Smackdown, crowds were a lot more receptive and active towards what was being presented. Vince being hands on from the start did a ton of damage because of his habit of getting bored with things very quickly and his poor track record handling cruiser/lucha style wrestling. Within a few weeks, all the specialness from the CWC is basically gone and the division just felt like every other division that gets neglected. The only guy who actually got over from Vince's style of cruiser wrestling was Enzo and that was only due to him having very good promo skills. In-ring wise, match quality took a nose dive with him as champ. |

The CWC had stakes. Every match had a story. It was a knockout tourney. Participants had stories. Cedric Alexander had dropped weight. Brian Kendrick was looking at one more shot at glory. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa were crossing over from NXT. It should have been a yearly tournament you use to emphasize a few personalities, and from those personalities you get a few steady hands with some fan interest for NXT or the main roster, and one guy coming out of it with some momentum.

Goldberg shouts about grunts about the family-man being left at home and Undertaker's getting the ass-kicking killing machine.
He then leaves the ring and hugs a little girl (who probably has no idea who Goldberg is). |

They didn't get a great response on Raw, but I don't think they were helped by how hamfisted WWE were about presenting the division. OK now we're going to arbitrarily put purple tape on the ropes and change the announce team because it's CRUISERWEIGHT TIME! For a while, 205 Live would have multiple stories running at once and all three matches on the show would play into one of those stories. It was great. But you'd never know any of that stuff was going on because on Raw they'd just be doing random matches that had no tie in to anything that would carry over to Tuesday. |

Also, outside of the debut of the cruiserweight title on raw, it’s never been treated as important. In WCW ppv’s they would have 25 minute classics in the middle of the card. Now you get 10-15 minutes on the preshow. It’s a miracle if they get on the card.
If you’re treating the title all these guys are fighting for like a red headed stepchild then you’re fighting an uphill battle to gain the audience’s interest. |

They fucked up when they started bringing people "up" from 205live to the Raw/SD. It is obviously of lesser importance than Raw or Smackdown but they made it too glaringly obvious by bringing up Cedrick, Lucha House Party and Murphy.

Goldberg with no pyro looked pretty shit, i'm almost sure he expected there to be pyro as he came out pretty wet and from the camera following him it looked like he was in the gorilla position for several seconds waiting for the pyro to start (which is a wwe thing, in wcw he went out and stood there before the pyro started) before being told there was none.
Funny how wwe has never managed to do his entrance right compared to how wcw done it. Anemic pyro that barely even covers him in wwe vs: |

Maybe pulled a hammy. His leg goes straight and he clutches it immediately after taking the bump.
