I think its a side affect of the "everyones aligned with someone mentality", it does feel over used at times but I think without it and the multi man matches (which I love btw) people would feel even more lost in the shuffle.

Upsides and downsides to a massive roster and maybe there missing a central figure to book stuff as opposed to the "norm" or what were used too.

I like the wins and losses matter, I like the way there using lesser shoes to pad stats to give guys reasons and look credible but it does feel like its either a grudge match or a contenders match. Almost needs some other device to book stuff preferably without "insert evil authority figure here".

I think another side affect of it all is the way people go missing of TV for a few weeks, but I don't really mind that either. Knowing how much of a toll this takes on performers a few weeks off here or there keeps the charachter fresh and gives performers a break.

Its all intertwined a bit I think.

Is it a bad idea to bring on Gabe? I mean Tony has a lot of jobs between all he does with AEW and the two football teams. Is he married with kids? He should get someone to share the load with.

Quick google search says there was an alleged verbal agreement between the two. Maybe there’s more but if that’s all it was then it’s he said she said. Seeing as both suits were dropped I’d guess neither had any evidence to favor one side or the other. I also don’t see why IWC would give a shit. That’s a personal issue between those.

The ratings just reset. Archer only needs a few wins to shoot up the rankings. If this were a month or so ago I’d agree.

Yeah but I think thats the key to they matter vs. they are the only thing that matters. Cole is a central piece of the show and when they mentioned he was #1 ranked I wasnt surprised at all, it felt right. But right now hes sidetracked on a bit of a grudge series with OC. This isnt uncommon in Boxing or MMA either.

I think it also adds credence sometimes to guys you dont see so much like Bear Country. Cant remember if it was ranking or number of wins they talked about on the Dynamite but as a guy who hasnt seen them much it gave them instant credence with me as a viewer.

Seems like Archer will face Hangman for Revolution but I assume Cole will be his next big feud.

You can't have it both ways. Either wins and losses matter or they don't. Cole shouldn't be the number #1 contender yet and Archer shouldn't be getting another title shot.

Cole is 13-4. Archer is 41-11. Wardlow is 40-6. The one with the best track record there is the only one not in the title picture.

Sure you can... for a start its all make believe. None of the oiled up muscle men slapping each other in undies are out to actually hurt each other. I feel like I covered it above with wins and losses matter, but there not all that matters.

You can have rankings and be side tracked if your highly ranked, you can use rankings for relevance of others on the list. You can also have your #1 contender face the champion on a nightly basis if you so wish. I woudlnt advise it.

Even in combat sports that arent pre determined the #1 ranked person not getting the next shot or picking there spot to take a shot if they can isnt unheard of.

Sorry I missed this. I know they reset. I also know bryan is ranked #3 in the new rankings with a losing record this years and is ahead of guys with winning records.

Serious question: When is the last time the rankings were used at all in factoring in who gets the next title program? Because for quite a while now the spot haa been given to whichever guy wins a tournament/ladder match/battle royal or just whoever does a run in on the champ.

Id like to clarify that i dont personally have a problem with whos been in the title picture. Its been a good scene. This argument is purely based on the whole records matter thing. Personally I always thought having records matter in a scripted show was a stupid idea. Youd either have the same guys at the top all time or your booking of people would have to be wildly inconsistent to rotate the people at the top of the rankings.

The rankings matter because they make you feel better about people with good records. Not because they are used like, you know, actual rankings to determine the pecking order.

I thought the rankings and stat tracking was a neat idea but this long into the promotion it's proving to be a hindrance.

The example I keep going back to - Evil Uno and Stu Grayson haven't worked a regular tag match for AEW since September. And in early 2021 they were barely tagging either. They always end up in trios matches instead. This is because they don't want them racking up wins where they have to get a tag title shot, but they don't want them taking losses either. It's clunky and restrictive.

Doesn't have to be. They could have just given them a title shot on dynamite or something. The ranking could add unique and different kinds of storytelling, but it requires work and planning. So far they've been very lazy in how they've utilized it.

The ranking system was and always will be a bad idea. The beauty of pro-wrestling is that you can control things. Having a fixed scorecard takes away elements of your control. You end up at the mercy of the stats. The emotional connection to a push is way more important than how many wins they’ve actually had.

Wrestling is all about capitalizing on the buzz when someone is hot. You need to be free to do that. WWE is rotten nowadays, but AEW are proving to be the worst at capitalizing on the buzz. Malakai Black looked awesome, and now he is going to tag? What?

CM Punk’s return was called “one of the most anticipated nights in a a decade” by one wrestling article, and then he wrestled Bobby Fish, some guy called Garcia and QT Marshall and feuded with some Indy guy that no casual will have ever heard of (Kingston)

You jump on someone when they are hot. No casual is tuning in now no matter what is next. You have stuck the red hot iron in cold water.

It would be like Undertaker coming back after one of his breaks and getting into it with Crash Holly before having random matches with Val Venis and Steve Blackman on Smackdown and Superstars. Completely bizarre.

No casual is tuning in period.

I’m fine with the rankings but they need to set it up like power rankings. Punk beating Darby is a big deal. He was relatively fresh off a long title reign and immensely popular. If they ranked guys on quality of wins instead the rankings would work better.

Add it stands I think they’re fine. It almost worked to get Hangman back into the main event scene before he took off for daddy duty. They used it to push Jurassic Express (who should’ve been the one to dethrone the Bucks). It’s hit and miss but it certainly hasn’t hindered their booking.

When they get somebody like Abadon rising up its not difficult to give her a throwaway title match on free TV.

But Vito is right. It’s been clunky.

I like Daniel Garcia. I don’t love him. I think he’s way overexposed in his current spot. But if he was in an OVW or NXT I think he would stand out heaps. He carries himself seriously. They just like to tell and not show. And when it’s time to tell they just show.
