View Full Version : Year by year MVP...

Go back for every year you have been watching wrestling and name who the MVP was in your opinion for that year...

Tovo's MVPs

2007 - Irronically, still havn't seen a single second of any promotion's work from this year...

2006 - Kevin Nash, sure he wasn't actually wrestling all that much, but he made 2006 a great year for wrestling. Made TNA major league in my dilusion mind.

2005 - Shawn Michaels, just never seemed to have a bad match that year. Not quite up to his old stanards, but half a HBK is still twice most any other wrestler.

2004 - JBL, I did originally say Jericho, but in all honesty, JBL becoming JBL overcame Jericho's semi bland year...

2003 - Chris Jericho, it was either him or Michaels. Their fued that year was BY FAR the best thing wrestling did in that 365 day span. And while it was a close call between the two of them, I was pulling for Jericho cause I thought he still had Main Eventer written all over him...

2002 - Ric Flair, his comeback to wrestling...oh my god, I can not explain what that was like for me. Some of the greatest moments of my life was getting to watch him walk down the ramp...for what I thought would be...just a few more times...

2001 - Chris Jericho, Benoit Ladder Match (IMO the best ladder match ever), solid IC Title run, Tag Title run with Benoit, fueds with HHH & Austin combo, only decent heel of WWF during the InVasion, finally won "The Big One" (WCW World Title), defeated Austin & Rock in one night to become THE UNDISPUTED WORLD CHAMPION. My biggest Jericholic year ever.

2000 - The Rock, I don't know what to say, everyone smelled was The Rock was cooking in 2000. He was simply electric every second...though Jericho comes VERY close as a second place.

1999 - Triple H, I loved him growing into The Game. One of the best character transitions ever made.

1998 - Steve Austin, 1998 was the year of the Austin. Nuff said.

1997 - Shawn Michaels, I consider 1997 to be the peak of Michaels career. There was literally not one thing I would have changed about anything he did that year. Not one. And please, dig as much into that comment as you want to.

1996 - Kevin Nash, nWo was awesome simply because Nash was there.

1995 - Ric Flair, Flair = God, really found that evil side of Flair.

1994 - Shawn Michaels, Hogan had come to WCW and over shadowed Flair so I was kind of pissed off at WCW and I remember Michaels from back when Flair was in WWE. Basically Shawn Michaels was the first person that could get me to watch WWE programming without Flair on it...

1993 - Ric Flair, great year for The Naitch. The last of the Hogan-free WCW days...

1992 - Ric Flair, his best year ever not counting his time with the Horsemen

1991 - Ric Flair, single handedly made me start watching WWE television

1990 - Ric Flair, his fued with Sting made me love Sting...but REALLY made me love Flair more.

1989 - Ric Flair, his year with Ricky Steamboat, still unbelievable to me. Probably what I consider to be the best matches ever put on by anyone. I think Flair/Steamboat was what paved the way for the 90's style of wrestling. Plus his breif fued with Funk was awesome.

1988 - Tully Blanchard, him teaming with Arn was incredible. Second favorite Tag Team of all time. Plus the Horsemen were all riding strong. Incredible year.

1887 - Tully Blanchard, his long reign with the TV Title was incredible. Probably one of my favorite title reigns of all time.

1986 - Ric Flair, tough year for me to call, but Flair BARELY sneaks out in front of Blanchard.

1985 - Ric Flair, him and the Horsemen are the reason I started watching wrestling.

The MVPs of MVPs

Ric Flair: 9 years
Shawn Michaels: 3 years
Kevin Nash: 2 years
Chris Jericho: 2 years
Tully Blanchard: 2 years
Triple H: 1 year
JBL: 1 year
The Rock: 1 year
Steve Austin: 1 year

I noticed Nash only made it twice. I'm dissapointed.

Hey, come on now, 2 out of 22 years isn't bad. And if you think about it, only HBK and Flair had more years than Nash...

I think that Hogan should probably make it in there somewhere but its your call.... also I think that Goldberg should be thought of as well because he did a lot for the monday night war between wwe (then wwf) and wcw. I remember that the night they had him beat hogan on nitro for the title the ratings for wcw were rediculous and they favored wcw for a long time with his build up and eventual title hold.

Something you should know about...every day of my life I have regretting being forced to share this planet with Hogan. I hate him. He makes my most hated wrestler almost every single year.

As for Goldberg, I was far beyond liking someone due to their hype by that point. He never came close to my personal favorites...

HAHA that funny what you said about hogan.... i met the guy a long time ago when I was a kid... my dad works for american airlines and one time i was with him at the airport in ohare and for whatever reason hogan was comming through on that day. Celebrities usually dont have to walk right through the regular terminals but he did and I saw him and me loving wrestling like I do I asked him for his autograph. He was like sure kid and started to sign a peice of paper or whatever and his fat friend that is on that reality show he has walked over and said they found somewhere to eat and hogan said good im hungry and threw what he was signing in my face and walked away. He didnt even finish. So i hate hogan more than anything but I have to admit that he was very important for wrestling.

plus this isnt much of a game if your going to shoot everyones ideas out of the water

The One
02-12-2007, 11:54 PM
Not for me. Infact, Hogan's arrival in a company has historically been one of the biggest reasons I tend to stop caring about a company on a whole.

I have never had a close meeting with him. Other than at live shows, I saw him once outside a store in New York signing autographs or something. He was arriving in a limo and just kind of joking shouted "You're a joke." I don't think he heard me over BC's and the other idiots' cheering... :(

The One
02-12-2007, 11:55 PM
Actually, I am simply stating why he isn't going to go on my list. YOU tried to invalidate my list by saying it should have had Hogan or Goldberg because they were influential...as far as I'm aware...I don't see anyone else's list, so I havn't even had a chance to shoot other people's ideas down.

Please Try Again.

This is more who I enjoyed the most at the time, not so much who I may have liked if I had watched that year at my current age. I was 5 when I first started, just for reference.

1987: Hogan
1988: Savage
1989: Mr. Perfect
1990: Mr. Perfect
1991: Bret Hart
1992: Ric Flair
1993: Shawn Michaels
1994: Bret Hart
1995: Nash
1996: Shawn Michaels
1997: Stone Cold
1998: Stone Cold
1999: The Rock
2000: Kurt Angle
2001: Stone Cold
2002: Kurt Angle
2003: Kurt Angle
2004: JBL
2005: Eddie Guerrero

I haven't actually watched wrestling since December '05, since that's when my TV broke, so I can't really decide after that.

1987: Hogan

1988: The Macho Man. This was his big year. The Mega Powers, this is when he got on the map as almost Hogan's equal.

1989: Ricky The Dragon Steamboat. Macho Man comes in second.

1990: Ultimate Warrior. The peak of his stardom, the Skydome and all.

1991: Hulk Hogan again, he was just too big for me to not give it to him, even though I hate to.

1992: Ric Flair. Basically his run with WWF. The royal rumble, the macho man elizabeth storyline.

1993: Bret Hart. Picked up the ball.

1994: Bret Hart. Ran with it.

1995: Bret Hart. Still running. Though Shawn was creeping up.

1996: Shawn Michaels. Yea, NWO was kicking the WWF's ass into the ground. But Shawn Michaels was the WWF. He kept things afloat and this was his year.

1997: Tie. Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin. Shawn wasn't quite gone, Steve wasn't quite there. Very equal this year.

1998: The Year of Austin. Though Mick Foley gets second place.

1999: Stone Cold Steve Austin. Carries over from 98, though HHH is a close second.

2000: The Rock, SNL, Scorpion King and all the fame that came with the peak year of The Rock

2001: Chris Jericho. Huge year for him, great matches amazing heat and capped off by title wins.

2002: I'm gonna say RVD or Jericho. Just because they were carrying the midcard while oldtimers held them down.

2003: Brock Lesnar. Half of its because they gave him the world, but he certainly had a huge year.

2004: Tie. Chris Benoit and Randy Orton

2005: Eddie Guerrero

2006: Kurt Angle, giving him the MVP just because of his beginning to 2006 in WWE and then the big deal he made by going to TNA.

2007: Obv too early to tell

Jeritron, can I ask...is this a list of who you think was the MVP, or sho was your personal MVP. I was asking who made you personally tune in more than anyone else. If that's the list, then :y:, but it seems like your list was more a "Who was the top dog" of the year.

Jeritron
02-13-2007, 12:47 AM
Yea, I kinda just gauged it on who was the "most valuable" to their team (promotion).
I didn't gauge it on just skill or even what personally entertained me. If so my list would be much different, and I could post another interpretation.

I was born in 1985 and I have watched *most* of my life. But when I was young its hard for me to make legit picks for "MVP" because I really didn't watch it THAT seriously. So I will make mine with from when I thought I could make half-intelligent decisions about wrestling.

1996 - Hogan (It's close between him and Nash, but Hogan was the frontman of the nWo so I give it to him)
1997 - Shawn Michaels
1998 - Austin
1999 - The Rock & Triple H (tie)
2000 - The Rock & Triple H (tie)
2001 - Chris Jericho
2002 - Kurt Angle
2003-2005 I quit watching so I will not pick anyone for these years...
2006 - Edge (finally moved up the card)
2007 Early Pick - Shawn Michaels & Christian Cage (tie, CC because if TNA makes any headway this year it will be in large part thanks to him I believe)

Mr. JL

91-97 it was Bret Hart
98-02 it was Rob Van Dam
'03 was Chris Jericho
'04 was Chris Benoit
'05 was Shawn Michaels
'06 it was Rob Van Dam again

I think it is really strange that I'd probably pair Bret Hart and Rob Van Dam as my two ALL time favourites when considering their style of wrestling is on opposite ends of the spectrum.

I would almost hate to say, but this is a pretty accurate statement. I wouldn't say he was never NEAR MVP of anything, but although he was a great wrestler and big star I don't he ever got to the level of the all-time great, great, GREATS of the business like the names you mentioned and more. I don't think he ever quite got on level with Flair, Michaels, The Rock, Triple H....you could go back further in time too, but he never quite got to THAT level, IMO.

Bret Hart was clearly the MVP for the WWE for like a year or two after Hogan left.

See, I would say that all the while Hart was wearing the gold, Michaels was still the MVP if you average out his reactions and his matches. Hart was obviously pushed once McMahon lost his Roid Monsters, and he was pushed as the top man of the company. But while Hart was WWF Champion, Michaels was making the rest of the show. And Michaels (I believe) was the man who people were actually tunning in for...

I agree, I don't think he's the best, but to say he's not near HBK, I disagree with.Nah, dude, Bret was a great wrestler. But he can't touch HBK. I suppose it's a matter of opinion in some ways, but in other ways you just have to look at in-ring ability and say that while Bret was so well versed in technical wrestling and one of the safest guys to work with, that's all he was. He could never dictate a match or give the fans a main event quite like Flair or Michaels could.

If you held a gun to my head I would always tell you that Flair and Michaels are the two greatest of all-time, but I could never pick the better man.

Bret was very good, never great. Wouldn't be close to my top 10 of all-time.
