Interesting Fact
If Edge does not win either the World or WWE Title in 2010, he will be the first Royal Rumble winner not to win on of those same titles in the same calendar year since Steve Austin in 1997.
Ever since 1993, when they started giving the Royal Rumble winner a title shot at that year's WrestleMania, only Luger (1994), Michaels (1995), and Austin (1997) were Rumble winners that were unable to win the WWE/World Title sometime in that same year. |

To think, Luger would of been champ had he not been tardy to work...

Austin was thrown out of the 1997 Rumble by Bret Hart but the referees didn't see it. Austin jumped back in the ring and threw out Bret, Taker, and Vader and won the Rumble. The next night, because of Austin's cheating, they announced that there'd be a 4-way match at the February PPV with the winner facing the Champion (winner of HBK vs. Sid at the Feb PPV) at WrestleMania.
A few days before the February PPV, HBK cut the famous "lost my smile" promo and vacated the title to avoid putting Bret Hart over at WrestleMania. So they made the 4-way match for the title and Bret won. The next night Sid beat Bret for the title and they announced Undertaker as the #1 Contender for WrestleMania for some reason. One of the worst built WrestleMania mania events ever (Triple H vs. Jericho in 2002 is the worst IMO). |

How was WrestleMania X8 the worst built WrestleMania main event? Seriously...

I thought it was and I'm pretty sure many others do. Jericho was one of the worst-booked champions ever and during his feud with HHH, he was an afterthought. It pretty much became HHH vs. Stephanie, rather than HHH vs. Jericho. Jericho was made to look really, really weak. That feud (and the entire title reign) did a lot of damage to his character and I think it took years to recover from that. Seriously...

He wasn't just a chickenshit heel. If you believe that, then you're a fucking idiot. He was taking orders from Stephanie McMahon. The main event of WrestleMania was HHH vs. Stephanie, not HHH vs. Jericho. If you can't see that, then once again, you're a fucking idiot.

You on your period? We were having a discussion until you said "Not really, but I'll let you live in your bubble of fucking stupidity." If you have an opinion, just give it without the shit talking. You wouldn't say that shit in real life so it doesn't make you cool to do it here. I only called you a "fucking idiot" after you posted that.

No it's still an official Rumble win for Austin. I remember Gorilla Monsoon, who was on the on-screen President or Commissioner, saying so the next night in Raw. Then he made the 4 way match but they didn't take away Austin's win, they just took away his title shot.

Regardless, this is not an "interesting" fact. It may have been interesting if Edge would be the first, but he's not, so, well, that's pretty moot.

Edge will win it at TLC.
This is one of those crazy facts that no one knows anyone keeps track of, but it is still kept. |

I think Edge will win the World Heavyweight Title at TLC, but if not, it's interesting. I cannot believe they didn't put Edge over Jericho at WrestleMania. That whole thing just didn't make sense, and to be honest, as much as I think both are awesome performers; the Jericho vs. Edge feud was quite a bit of a let-down.
And just to let my feelings on Triple H/Jericho be known, personally, I think the angle sucked. Jericho did the best he could, but emphasis was placed wrongly. You can say that Jericho was "using" Stephanie all you like; it came off the other way round. Also, when you consider the history between Jericho and Triple H, the idea of Jericho and Stephanie being aligned was just...awkward. I understand why they did the Triple H/Stephanie divorce, but it turned the entire angle into a bit of a farce. The moment Jericho looked the best during his Undisputed Title reign, was an awesome promo he cut on The Rock where he declared himself "not a joke." And a lot of the power of that promo came from everyone looking past Jericho -- which should have never been the case. Chickenshit heel or not; Jericho had just spent the last year and a half being a plucky fan-favourite that could hang with the best. In fact, he even unofficially won the WWE Title from Triple H at one point! Yet none of this was referenced, and it was almost like heel Y2J was essentially an entirely new guy on the roster -- since suddenly we were meant to take him less seriously as an in-ring competitor. Jericho vs. Triple H just didn't feel like a draw, either. I still think that I would have gone with Rob Van Dam winning the 2002 Royal Rumble (and you have to keep in mind just how over RVD was at this point in time, and that he had been close to the WWE Title on at least one occasion. Triple H would be cost the Rumble win by the nWo, and he, Austin & The Rock could form a three-man team to face them at WrestleMania. Come on, that would have been intense. Nash wasn't even on the card and Scott Hall was just wrestling Stone Cold, in a match that seemed to draw most of its power from both being alcoholics. With the kayfabe story being that Vince McMahon introduced some poison to the WWE in the nWo, Triple H could still get divorced from Stephanie and she could begin some weird sort of relationship with the nWo. |
