installing SP2 on "devils own" XP Pro

This is the deal, if you started with a FCKGW- cd key on your copy of windows then that copy is a pirate copy of a corporate edition of windows. Then later down the track you wanted to install SP1 on it, and then the shit hit the fan. You had to change the product key of your copy of windows to let SP1 install and stop it shutting down on you. Since then SP1 has been slipstreamed into that copy of XP with new product keys so it hasnt been a problem for most people.

Now we will soon have Service Pack 2, the same problem is going to arrise, people with pirate copies of XP are going to get screwed over. All that has really happened from the protection side of things is that microsoft have narrowed the list of allowed product id's in thier list. So what we need to do is change your product key to fall in line with the list.

To check your product ID, go to Control Panel | System and you'll see a value like "12345-640-6789012-34567" under the 'Registered To' portion.
If that second part says "-640-", then you're good. Otherwise you need to apply a new product key to XP that, in turn, generates such a PID.

Any other PID for the Corporate edition will most likely NOT properly install/run SP2. In other words, it either won't accept the product key at install time and you'll be stuck in an activation loop afterwards, or Windows Update v5 won't work later on due to an invalid product key.

Here is a list of the current block Product id's

Quote:
XXXXX-640-0000356-23XXX
XXXXX-640-2001765-23XXX
XXXXX-640-643718x-23XXX
XXXXX-641-309376x-23XXX
XXXXX-642-064580x-23XXX
XXXXX-642-464364x-23XXX
XXXXX-643-334701x-23XXX
XXXXX-644-081772x-23XXX
XXXXX-644-451265x-23XXX
XXXXX-644-874896x-23XXX
XXXXX-644-933704x-23XXX
XXXXX-644-962396x-23XXX
XXXXX-645-833254x-23XXX
XXXXX-645-994962x-23XXX
XXXXX-646-031843x-23XXX
XXXXX-646-104081x-23XXX
XXXXX-646-105103x-23XXX
XXXXX-647-318838x-23XXX
XXXXX-647-592029x-23XXX
XXXXX-647-677834x-23XXX
XXXXX-648-301691x-23XXX
XXXXX-648-819992x-23XXX
XXXXX-649-106765x-23XXX
XXXXX-649-941392x-23XXX
XXXXX-650-292312x-23XXX

X standing for a wildcard numerical value.

In order to achive a key that generates a PID of 640 you will ned a few things such as this zip file, in it are these tools : Linky linky

Keyfinder.exe – for viewing and easily changing your install key without having to restart.

Keygen.exe - is a key generator that does it in reverse, you specify the PID number range you want ( in this case - 640 – 500000 to - 640 – 600000 acording to all reports is the ideal range) and then it gives you the cd key from that, not all the keys it generates are valid so check them with the good old bluelist keygen first.

Xpkey.exe – the good old bluelist keygen.

So basicly it goes like this, try and go to http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com if you get an invalid product ID error then you will have to change your key before installing SP2. If v5 of windows update works fine, then your sweet for SP2.

If you need to change your product key then you should do the following.

run the keygen.exe and enter a range like this

Then lets say you get a key like this from it:
HMKPK-D8383-FTT9J-Y992M-W3BCY

For gods sake please note that not all keys generated by the keygen are valid keys so we should really check them with the bluelist geygen first

place your key in your XPkey.exe set it to windows XP corp and Test key

As you can see you have ended up with a product ID of XXXXX-640-5053645-XXXXX which is the 640 we are after and the 500000 to 600000 range aswell.

now you have a valid generated key. All you need to do is change it.

open keyfinder.exe and hit change key.

enter the new key

Hit change and your done.
You should really restart but its not completely nessesary. I didnt have to, some other people did.

Then check back at the v5 windows update and you should now have full functionality again. and be able to install SP2.

The SP2 RC2 that is up on the 5v windows update site isint the final official release yet but by all accounts is stable. I have installed it using the method above and it went in no problems. The v5 windows update site is a good measure for checking if your key change worked. If the site works for you, then SP2 will too.

Disclaimer - I do not endorse piracy in any form but only wish to help out the poor unfortunates out there who have a devils own copy and wish to prevent the spread of virus's by keeping up to date with all relavant patches and updates.
I also do not take responability for you screwing up you machine by changing to an incorrect key etc etc use at your own risk and all that shit.

Well its still XP pro, but it doesnt require activation like other copies of windows XP.

its usually identified by the black marker written on the disk and the dodgy mate who gave it to you.

SP2 = Service Pack 2

its the new update for XP soon to be released via windows update.
You should already have Service pack 1 installed at the moment.

Its basicly just all XP updates and patches rolled into one file, with the addition of a pop up blocker for IE and an improved firewall.

seriously...anyone installing SP2 when it comes out right away should be smacked.

MS is already aware of bugs in sp2, but it's going to be released anyway

wait a month or so after sp2 is released to install it, that way other people can be the guinea pigs

and if anyone needs, i have a little app that can change your xp cd key.

I was going to do just that, but seeing as I was testing the cd key changing thing, I felt I had to try sp2 just to be sure it was all working fine.

When sp2 is out proper and has been for awhile, I will be slipstreaming it into my copy of xp and doing a re-install.
