My moniter got fucked up
I don't even know what the hell
It might be my video card or something, I don't know. I was just no my computer doing my usual nightly thing, and the screen went all dark and weird, and you can see a bunch of strange darker horizontal lines. The picture can still be made out in them, but it's obviously not how it should be. WTF happened? Did my video card go kapoot? Or my moniter? For the record, I'm using... Windows 98 SE nVIDIA Geforce 2 MX (32 MB) Viewsonic A90 19" moniter (any other specs needed just tell me) I don't know what to do about it.. I tried turning off the PC and unplugging/replugging the cords, to no avail. I'm gonna try and redownload my video card drivers, see if that fixes things. Any other ideas??? |

Switch monitors to see if it is that, although I would put money on the problem being a fucked video card.
I would take the video card out and put it back in again if the monitor switch doesn't work, and pray that that fixes it. Otherwise, you will probably have to get a new video card. |

Okay, so...
To make the explanation of this easier, I'll refer to the computers/moniters as Computer A and B, and moniter A and B. Computer/Moniter A is what the problem originally was. I was browsing and then boom outta nowhere it broke. So right now I'm on Computer/Moniter B, with everything working fine. So I tried to plug Moniter A into Computer B to see if Moniter A was the problem. It wasn't, the moniter worked perfect on this computer. To test Computer A, I plugged Moniter B into Computer A, and it was fucked. So Computer A is definitely the problem. At first I thought it was a moniter problem, but now that's obviously not the case. So it's definitely something with my video card. I redownloaded my nVIDIA drivers, and that didn't help any. What can I do to fix it? |

Okay... I just took my video card, and I noticed the fan or whatever on it looked burnt.
Like it has that fan on it, and the middle part with the voltage sticker or whatever, it's brown in the middle, like it was burned or something. Do video cards like.. burn out? I dunno if that's normal or not. It's probably what's wrong with it, lol |

Oh well, I should probably get a new card now...hahaha. I've been meaning to get one sorta soon anyways for when WoW comes out. What kind of card would you recommend? Should I stick with nVIDIA or are there cheaper/better alternatives out there? |

It could be one of several things, but from what it sounds like, you probably have a/some burned capacitors on your video card. The card itself still works 'technically', but with capacitors being fried, it would cause distortion like you describe.
For a new card, if you have the money to spend, a GeForce 6800 Ultra is the ownage right now. But if you are going for a good card for a lower price, try an ATI Radeon 9600XT or something, those are pretty good. |

Also, before you shell out for a new card, try putting the one in question into your other PC and test it then. It might turn out to be a problem with the connectors on the AGP/PCI slot (depending on which slot type your card uses, I'll assume AGP) of your motherboard, or even a capacitor on the motherboard. Always make sure of the problem before you go buy a new part. A new motherboard is alot cheaper than a video card these days.

I dunno, I see "burned" and I think "trouble", so yeah.
Do any of those cards have any compatibility issues or anything? I don't know like anything at all about video cards, so I don't know if they'll run on my PC or not. I just have a pIII 800 mhz, I have no idea what my motherboard is (or even if motherboards come in different brands or whatever, lol ), so I have no idea. Do most video cards generally work in any system? |

Yea, they will be compatible. However with you hacving a p3, that means you have SDRAM in all likelyhood, and that will cause the cards to run at a lower quality than they would on a stronger system like a P4/Athlon with DDR. However, either-way you look at it, they will still be some of the best cards for your system.

If I were you, i'd buy a few new parts at once to be on the safe side.
My old motherboard couldn't handle the amount of ram and the processor I use now, so I had to upgrade it, my video card is only one of those shitty geforce 64mb ones which I bought cheap, and I kept my HDs, CD roms and sound card, and my monitor/speakers/mouse/kb etc. I mean since you were gonna upgrade your whole comp anyway (and with WoW on the horizon ), you may aswell do like I did and just buy the core parts first, and keep the parts from your old computer that are still good. Then add in the seksi bits like wireless kb and optical mouse set, hot speakers and a hot LCD monitor. :[ I might upgrade some stuff soon, I think my motherboard can handle up to 2GB of RAM |

Yeah I tried that too, was definitely the video card
Anyways, I went out and bought a new one today. I got a uh... Geforce FX 5200. It was pretty cheap, like $130 (Canadian). Is that a decent card? I just wanted something better than what I had (Geforce 2 MX), and this one seems a bit better |
