Does anyone know if the games are going to be the same size as original DS games, or did they change that again?
Drakul
01-11-2011, 09:42 PM
If you mean size as in memory, they can hold up to 8gb but Nintendo has imposed a limit of 2gb per game.
I'm guessing this is so they can gradually allow more and more memory to be used to keep things fresh.
If you mean size as in dimension of the cartridge, it's about the same as a regular DS game.
Emperor Smeat
01-12-2011, 01:19 AM
The size is also to decrease costs for both Nintendo and publishers since its a bit expensive to be cranking out millions of 8 GB cards and to keep initial 3DS development costs down.
When Sony introduced UMDs, it was a bit expensive to make due to how Sony designed the discs and the need to make the PSP appear like a portable PS2. It meant pretty expensive development costs for launch games (PS2 range) compared to N64-level costs for making a DS game.

I bet before the console is dead, it'll even go up to 16gb.
Not that I can see why, MGS3 can fit on a 2gb card, 3D cinematics and all.

The region locking is possibly a dealbreaker for a pre-price cut purchase. Might have to wait until Resident Evil or MGS3 is out at the very least now I think.
I'll see what the launch price is when they announce it on the 19th.

They're saying for the region locking to work, it needs to be done due to the different rating boards in Japan, US and Europe.

Friend Code info:
The Friend Code, the bane of every modern Nintendo gamer's existence, is getting a major overhaul with the release of the 3DS, allowing friends to find friends with little to none of the hair-pulling frustration that is currently involved.
Gamers who try to play online with others using the DS or the Nintendo Wii currently have to exchange a set of 16-digit numbers to connect. Sometimes they have to do so twice, depending on the game they play. And often the game doesn't remember those codes, turning an online session of gaming into something more akin to math than fun.
But the 3DS fixes some of that when it hits Japan in February and the U.S and Europe in March. The new Friend Code system will now be tied directly to the 3DS you own and there will only be one for each system, so no more secondary Friend Codes for games.
The system, Nintendo tells us, will also be able to remember the codes you put in for your Friends and track whether they are currently online or not. If they're online, one of the lights in the top right corner of the portable will glow orange to alert you.
The 3DS will have an app that tracks and can give you the current status of your friends at any given time.
And finding and becoming friends sounds like it will sometimes be easier as well. While we don't yet know if they Friend Code will be a 16-digit number, or even a number at all, we do know that you will have to exchange them just once with your friend to offer and accept a friendship on the 3DS.
But if you're connected with another friend via local wireless, you won't even have to do that. Instead you can push a button to accept or send friend requests and the 3DS will take down the number automatically and remember it.
While this new system still isn't as effortless as being able to create easy-to-remember user names and connect them with a message from anywhere, a system that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 use, it's much better than the intricacies and extra numbers of the current Wii and DS Friend Code system.
What we don't yet know, what no one at the event could yet answer for us: What format will the Friend Codes be in? Numbers or names and how long are they. And is there a cap for your friends list.
Really hope it turns out to be some kind of name rather than a number.
Kalyx triaD
01-19-2011, 02:00 PM
So basically gamer IDs as we know them? Might as well get rid of 'codes' and have names. Though with how people tried to be 'clever' with their names on consoles, it may still use a coded system (and nicknames will be private).
Wonder if the Wii will adopt this.
#BROKEN Hasney
01-19-2011, 02:39 PM
It's a 12 digit number. It's already present in SSF4.

StarFox 64 3D port/remake going to have online play for multiplayer and a lot of other extras that the original N64 version didn't have. I think the replay level for high scores is from Star Fox Command since that is how extra characters were unlocked.
It's not the improved take on Star Fox 64's multiplayer mode, though that's in the 3DS update and playable over a local wi-fi connection. There are new multiplayer modes and weapons in Star Fox 64 3D. It's also not the graphical overhaul of the Nintendo 64 original.
It's these additions:
* "The new Score Attack Mode allows the player to revisit any planet and play for a high score on that level."
* "New features also allow first-time players to enjoy the excitement of Star Fox."

Rumor is the June 2 date is just a place holder since Nintendo never releases that many games from their catalogue on the same day on the same system. Only Ocarina seems to be confirmed for June 2 while Star Fox isn't going to make it for June/July window.
Those $50 games might also be incorrect since its also rumored to be a pre-launch place holder Gamestop does when a new system comes out.

Trying to sign up to shopto to preorder but it's not working. After putting in my credit card details, I was taken back to the registration page.
I've not had a confirmation email and the £1 they take to "verify your account but will put back instantly" hasn't been put back into my account which sucks because I only had 93p in my account so I'll be overdrawn by 7p if they don't hurry up. I might end up being charged £30 odd if it's not back in there soon, which will make this £200 deal more expensive than the RRP.
Tried logging in and it's not working either.

Ok, it's been nearly two hours and still no email or refund of the pound.
I looked it up and, apparantly, Shopto is a terrible site. A lot of people have had bank details stolen, been charged twice, one guy had vouchers revoked days after he used them and they had been accepted, one guy even got the Arabic version of a game.
According to one guy, Shopto has people on various forums to try and talk down these problems, to make them seem like a "legit" site. Sounds dodgey as hell.
I've changed my bank password just to be safe (I had to input them when I "signed up") though I want to do more to be safe and looks like I'll have to ask someone to forward £1 into my bank just to keep the bank off my back about being a whole 7p overdrawn.
Anyone else thinking of using Shopto because of the £200 3DS, don't.
Edit: Just found the "Email for help" function. I typed a message and it wont send it because it's "too short". How is this short?:
Hello, I recently tried to register to your site but have had problems.
Firstly, I signed up and gave my bank details and I never got a confirmation email and when I try to log in anyway the site claims it doesn't recognize my log in details.
Another problem is that the £1 taken from my bank to verify my bank details has not been returned even though the site said it would be returned instantly. I have been waiting for four hours as of this email and it still hasn't been returned. I would appreciate it if I could be given that back. Thank you.
I've tried it as both one big paragraph and as two paragraphs. This site really is one big shitty joke.
Edit #2: Finally got it to send the email. Now to wait for either a really unhelpful reply, an automated reply or no reply at all.

Some people say they've had no issues and others say it's an awful site. It's more expensive but at least I don't have to worry about any problems coming up.

The Nintendo 3DS will get its eShop as late as May in Japan as part of a major software update, along with a web browser and the ability to transfer DSiWare titles, according to details coming from an investor meeting in Japan.
Nintendo's eShop for the 3DS will sell Game Boy and Game Boy Color software, as well as apps designed for the 3DS itself, when it launches. Nintendo has already prepare 3DS early adopters for the possibility that the eShop might not be available on day one, noting that a system software update "may be required" to access these features.
Nintendo also touched on new and already announced software at the investor Q&A, including a new Kirby game from developer HAL Laboratory and Battle & Get! Pokémon Typing (complete with Bluetooth wireless keyboard) for the Nintendo DS, as well as Rhythm Heaven, Zero Shinsaku and Pandora's Tower for Wii.
These details are not yet confirmed by Nintendo. We expect a transcript from the meeting to be available online later today.

They lowered the price of SSFIV3D to £32.99 and then raised it back up to £34.99. Because I have both SF and the 3DS preordered. I'm now paying the cheaper option for both because they can't charge you more if they reduce the price after you preorder and then raise it.

The Nintendo 3DS is a powerful multitasking beast, besting the efforts of many handhelds and consoles before it. If you don't want to quit out of your game, you can use one of the four highlighted icons to perform additional tasks on top of your game after pressing the Home button.
For example, want to jot down some important notes during a game? Don't ruin the last few pages of your instruction booklet. Instead, tap the pencil icon to access Game Memo, an app that lets you draw and write anything you want. (It looks a lot like Pictochat.) Once you're done, you can save your image to the SD card.
Is your system notification LED flashing orange? That means one of your Wi-Fi connected friends is online. Tap the smiley face button to see what your friends are playing. The speech bubble icon will give you insight into all of your Spot Pass and Street Pass activity, letting you know when you've downloaded something new. Finally, the internet browser (available via firmware update) should let you research some GameFAQs and read some Joystiq while you take a break from raiding some faces.
Joystiq
Some good shit from the home button here.

Being able to use the browser while playing could come in handy if we every have big multiplayer sessions with each other and there is no form of ingame chat. Just get the browser up and leave a message on here. I know some aready do that but it seems a bit of a fuss to run back an forth from console to PC.
Saw this fake image and isntantly thought "Awesome! I'll get that one!" until I saw it was fake. :(

I've gone with cosmic black because I'm not a fan of blue. Would have loved the red one though. It's not a big enough deal that I'll buy the red one when it comes out but I still would have liked it. I can't even imagine why anyone would rebuy a console they already have just because it's a new colour.
GAMEs site are doing the console on it's own for £196.99 but that console does come with 5 or 6 AR cards so it's not like you'd have nothing to do with it if you just bought the console.
I'm just buying the console for now.

It shouldn't be too hard to get one after launch compared to the Wii due to Nintendo saying they learned from the Wii demand boom and the game scheduling from the DS launch.
Instead of 1 large shipment which might save them some cost on shipping delivery, they are going for the smaller and quicker shipments while also spreading out the launch for 3-4 months instead of everything at once like the DS.

One of the freebie games looks to be an RPG-like game involving the Street Pass mode and 3DS Miis. The game is called Find Mii and works by having your friends or a group of Miis act like an RPG group/party with the objective to rescue your Mii out of jail.
The more Miis that show up in the Mii Plaza, the larger the group gets (similar to World of Warcraft big raid parties). If nobody shows up in your plaza, you can spend Play Coins to hire "mercenary" Miis to free you.

System freezes are starting to crop up on an unknown number of Nintendo's new 3DS portables. While we don't know how frequent the problem is, it's happening enough for Nintendo to include the issue on their official troubleshooting site.
According to Nintendo.com, System freezes that result in a white screen, black screen or inability to power off could mean that your brand new 3DS needs to be returned to Nintendo for repair.
Contacted Monday morning for comment Nintendo of America has yet to respond, though Nintendo UK has told outlets there that any experiencing any problems with their Nintendo 3DS console should first try the latest system update. If the issue persists, customers are told to contact Nintendo's Customer Service Center.
While Tristan's 3DS, which he purchased on Sunday, hasn't had any issues. My system has frozen twice on a black screen. The second time it occurred I was playing Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars and in the middle of the game the system just faded to black, slowly. Then it wouldn't respond, as you can see in the video above.

From what I've read and seen, Ridge Racer is the best one to use 3D but gets a bit repetitive after a while.
Street Fighter IV is the best in terms of controlling and playing just like the console versions. Not much of a 3D effect unless you fight in 3D mode or 1st person.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars might end up as the underrated game of the launch with low sales but a good game. Very similar to the old X-Com series in gameplay style.
Madden and Lego Star Wars appear to be the games to avoid the most with Super Monkey Ball 3D, Asphalt 3D, and Bust-A-Move Universe as the next set of avoidable games.

I just had a thought about the runner in OoT. The guy you'd find next to the canyon would challenge you to a race to the forest but he always won.
Think it's likely they'll change that? I always assumed they had plans for the guy, like you beat him and he gives you something like a heart container but they scrapped it and kept him in.
Then I read about the rumours that maybe he was linked with some sort of Triforce related quest they took out. I doubt that. Would be cool if they added a whole other quest using the same map, though. I know that's asking far too much. I'd only expect them to do something with the runner so he can give you a prize, if they changed anything like that.
Navi would be cool in 3D, flying about and so would a lot of the boss battles with their fire and effects. We'd probably get Eponas butt in 3D as well.

Fishing would also look pretty cool in 3D (and perhaps easier?). And being that Zelda 64 made Z-targeting what it is, I guess it'll be fully realized locking on to enemies and Link's body looking that much closer to the screen, hopping about and fighting night skeletons.

The runner was meant to be a joke by Nintendo because even if you tried to out run him, the games would end up cheating and still put him in the finishing line.
His alter-ego in Majora's Mask was beatable in a contest but it was to get the clock at exactly 10 seconds instead of a race in order to get a heart piece.

The entire BitTrip Saga series is heading to the 3DS as a single game card for those who didn't buy it on PC or Wiiware.
The adventures of Commander Video are served six ways in the new Bit.Trip Saga, the Nintendo 3DS compilation that will included every Bit.Trip game released by developer Gaijin Games. Not only do you get Bit. Trip Beat, you get Core, Void, Runner, Fate and Flux.
That's more than two years worth of Bit.Trip releases on one cartridge. And that's not all. If you act... whenever Bit.Trip Saga comes out, you'll get all six games in stereoscopic 3D! So many dimensions!

Nintendo released a list of about 20ish DSiWare games that won't be transferable to the 3DS although Nintendo didn't rule out making them possible in the future with a few already confirmed to be having their own 3DS version (ex. Flipnote).
Earthworm Jim not being transferable might be more related to Interplay potentially closing as a company than other issues.

In Japan, Nintendo is releasing new hardware bundles this month, and a new hardware color next.
On June 23, a Wii bundle with Wii Sports Resort and an extra Wii Remote Plus goes on sale in Japan for ¥20,000 (US$$250).
The following month, on July 14, Nintendo is releasing a "Fire Red" Nintendo 3DS for ¥25,000 ($313). Currently, the 3DS is available in Cosmo Black and Aqua Blue in Japan.
Good, so this is the colour I'l be getting if/when it comes out in the UK. A UK shop had it up on it's sight before the 3DS even launched so I'd assume it would come out here.

Yoshii confirmed to be an Easter egg for the Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater game. It would make it the 2nd MGS game in a row on a Nintendo platform the dinosaur has appeared in with Twin Snakes being the first.
Most likely he is just going to replace the hidden toy frogs in the game but Konami as a joke didn't deny it wasn't possible to eat him.
Also not answered is what happens to the 3D effect later in the game due to something happening to Snake in the original version he looses sight in 1 eye which could be used to disable or alter the 3D effect for that part of the game

Hey, tech support question for you owners out there.
I got my mom a 3DS for her birthday a few weeks back, got mine at launch. I updated my system to get the internet browser and shop without a problem a couple nights ago. Tried to do my mom's just now and I can't get no connection. The catch is, all the bars are blue on the home screen. But when i go into the settings menu, they all go grey. When I try to update, it starts and the bars are back to blue, but 5 seconds later the bars go back to grey.
I'm thinking hardware issue, but I'm just curious if anybody else is having a problem before I go to Nintendo on this. Any help is of course appreciated.

I played a 3DS for the first time a couple weeks ago. It was Pilot Wings Resort and my eyes just couldn't adjust to the 3D at full blast. Turned it down to a lower level but ended up leaving the shop (ASDA) a bit disapointed in the 3DS.
Tried it again at GAME yesterday with SSFIV3D with the 3D set to full and it worked like a charm. I was quite impressed. I thought the 3D would have made everything pop out but it makes the game look "deeper", like it has multiple layers.
I couldn't adjust to Pilot Wings in 3D but SSFIV's 3D was natural. So, is it as case of ASDA having a crappy 3DS or does the ease of adjusting to the 3D vary from game to game?

I think that's just because of the difference in view point. Flying forward in 3d is a lot harder for your eyes to process than a 2d plane converted to 3d.
At least I would imagine so.

Wasn't that the original price of the DS (and all the revisions)?
If anything it now provides a bigger gap away from the Vita which could kill off some of its steam after Sony announced the lower model was the same price as the 3DS.
It could also have a side effect of making the Wii U cheaper than what Nintendo originally wanted so that the Wii U doesn't have the slow sales like the 3DS initially had.

You mean, it provides a stopgap measure in response to the bombshell Sony dropped on them.
Sales were already short of projections by a significant number. They're already kind of failing without direct competition, and the price point on the PSP Aqua Velva was just insult to injury. They already had to do something, regardless of the PSP Vittles. This may have upped the price cut, but even that's questionable.
I get the spin, but Sony's the lagging brand up against the reigning champ, and I have trouble imagining this has a serious impact on Sony's momentum at this point.
Though this does kinda make me regret buying a DSiXL so recently. Paying 250 for a technology I have no interest in using to play ports of old titles I didn't buy on the last ten platforms they were released for isn't my idea of a good buy. But at a more reasonable price, the backwards compatability alone would have been ice to replace my former unit.

Not entirely. The DS started just as slow, both in sales and a dearth of games and it wasn't until the second holiday when it started picking up. However, the initial price was a huge barrier to entry for families that have Wii's and DS's in this economy.
There's new Mario and Mario Kart along with a new, lower price coming out before Christmas. If they're still failing into the new year, serious questions will need to be asked internally.

Oh sweet Jesus, would Jim Sterling like a word with you.
Suffice to say the DS didn't quite sell as bad, that's an excuse. Making excuses about launch titles is a dumb idea, since it really hasn't been a factor before. The difference? Counting on the same old in a recession.
Further, if this were really the case, if things were business as usual, none of what's happened would be happening. A price cut, a profit forecast of doom for the company, and Iwata's paycut demonstrate just how marked a difference there is.
And yes, price was a good chunk of that, but that came from hubris based on a response of interest from the consumer. They actually thought 3D would carry that price tag, and that's a pretty big issue that's hard to excuse.
Has, I didn't peg you for an apologist. If (not when, before some whiny faggot dregs up this post in a year) the PSP Vita does well at launch, what will be the excuse?
They had to play damage control on launch week sales, even. It's a GOOD thing that we're not sold out, they said. That was Sony's excuse for the PS3. Well, one of them. They also trumped up sales and such, which is Nintendo's current shtick.
So...Apologise away, I guess. It might make you feel better, but the 3DS is in trouble. I know you were fellating the thing for months before release, but apologetics is another thing entirely.
Justifying your buy?

Not really, it's just how I see it all. I've already sold mine. It can burn in hell for all I care, then I can re-pick one up cheap and have new Mario and Mario Kart and I'll be a happy bunny.
They've said it's below expectations, but it just needs a strong holiday to pick it back up. unfortunately for them, they've taken the loss leader business practice so it's going to need to be a strong holiday with a high attach rate.
Vita though, if that thing launches in March like is rumoured, I would put money on it having a strong opening month and then dropping off the map until Christmas.

I haven't had any problems with headaches, however I find that I fidget sometimes while playing, which throws the 3d effect off. When trying to show someone something on the 3ds it sucks because you have to turn the 3d off.

Yeah, had some money nicked and had to sell it for food and junk. Would have worked out great, actually sold it for more than the price drop amount so fine when I would have re-bought one. Now I don't see a reason to until the dual-stick version comes out.

Only issue is if a game uses both sticks, it sort of makes the touch pad a bit useless or even using the buttons because of the placement.
I saw a concept one that placed the right stick on the bottom although the thingy itself was just a stick and not a cradle like the picture above.
I'd also assume besides the possibility of Nintendo becoming worried from the Vita or people complaining about the lack of a 2nd stick, the extra stick was done to help with the idea of using it as a controller for the Wii U since the Wii U controller has 2 sticks to go along with a screen.

According to Nintendo, Capcom pushed for the new 2nd stick add-on as one of the requirements to getting Monster Hunter on the handheld during negotiations between both companies.
They also said Capcom was the main reason why the Classic Controller for the Wii had the Pro model with the extra shoulder buttons because Capcom wanted the extra buttons for Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii.
According to a few rumors, Nintendo was against the idea of separating the 3DS user base this early but they also knew it would be unwise to let Sony keep the series exclusive to their handhelds in Japan because that ended up being the main reason why the PSP never collapsed completely.

A bunch of 3DS news from today's press conference held by Nintendo.
NES Classic Kid Icarus will become the next game to have the 3D Classic treatment while Japan's Club Nintendo is holding a contest and giving away 3,000 limited edition Mario-related 3DS with each model only having 1,000 copies made.
http://www.screwattack.com/news/kid-icarus-will-become-3d-classic
Mario Kart 7 will not drop its 60 fps framerate for online multiplayer matches and allows for customized racing leagues/groups. The StreetPass mode allows for races to be scheduled and the exchanging of racing groups between 3DS owners. SpotPass allows "ghost racers" to be uploaded from other people's races.
http://www.screwattack.com/news/mario-kart-7-online-and-streetpass
Recap of the news regarding the 3DS system itself from Nintento include (no guarantee all will be available outside of Japan):
* 3D video recording will be enabled. You'll be able to record up to 10 minutes of video and tweak your clips afterwards, even enabling stop-motion animation.
* There's a map overlay to show where Miis you've collected in StreetPass are from.
* You'll be able to transfer software to other 3DS systems.
* The 3DS RPG Find Mii will get a sequel, available only if you've cleared the first iteration.

It's unlikely we'll see the third Gen 5 game released on a platform other than the one the other two were released on. I'd expect otherwise from Nintendo's standard dev cycle.
Anyway, I was just here to post this (pretty sweet):
www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.320240-Major-3DS-Update-Includes-Demos-and-DLC
After a losing financial year, Nintendo wants to eliminate every excuse you have for not buying new content on its 3DS.
In response to the company's recent financial woes, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced that the 3DS eShop will be expanded in a firmware update later this year. The update, expected November 4th, will focus on downloadable content, allowing game demos, DLC, and the ability to perform downloads while in sleep mode.
Iwata's plans were laid out in the company's Semi-Annual Financial Results Briefing (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/111028/05.html), a long explanation of what caused Nintendo's recent numbers and what it intends on doing to help reverse the trend. Also outlined in the report were plans for a second firmware update that will release sometime "in the future" after the one already planned for November. This future update will hypothetically allow the 3DS eShop's content to be viewable, and eventually, downloadable from smart phones and computers.
Nintendo believes that one of the problems with the 3DS is that it doesn't have "a great affinity with the social media, which are currently being used as a means to spread information.
"In other words," the report states, "even if a software title receives an incredible review, majority of people will not know about it unless they access the Nintendo eShop with their Nintendo 3DS system."
That's exactly why Iwata wants players to have more access to content. At first, players using other devices will only be able to view the eShop, but soon (for those of you counting, we're now talking about three updates out), Nintendo plans on giving them the ability to make purchases as well. Until that time, you'll need to photograph a QR code with your 3DS in order to access the purchase screen on your handheld.
This whole 3DS mess may be a thorn in Nintendo's side, but there's not much to complain about for the consumer. There's now been a price cut, a second thumbstick added (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/112831-Bulky-3DS-Expansion-Adds-Second-Thumbstick), Netflix, the aforementioned DLC and demo update, and, of course, the stuff Nintendo was already planning on giving players in November anyway, namely 3D video recording and a new messaging service. I'll admit that I haven't been thrilled with Nintendo's hardware choices of late, but I have to applaud Iwata for the way he's handled its failings. Instead of sending out hordes of apology letters without changing, or simply pointing fingers and mud slinging, Nintendo has genuinely tried to make itself better for the player. Whether or not that's enough to put the company back on an upward swing is a different story.

Right, good read. Let's not turn this into another little escuffle, but this is what I want to see out of the big three when they fuck up. Not lies, not bells and whistles that drive up hardware costs without actually adding to the player experience and definitely not blaming or punishing the gamer.
"We fucked up. The economy is bad, but we fucked up. And we're sorry. Here's what went wrong. Here's what we're doing to fix it. Here's what we're doing to once again pique gamers' interest in our product. Oh, plus we're still doing all the stuff we were already rolling out for this year. Our bad. Enjoy."
It's really not that hard, Sony, Microsoft, EA, Activision and every company that's ever fucked the gamer over. Apologize, fix your shit then watch the money roll in. My only gripe with this is that I still have to wait probably a year and a half for v2.0 of the 3DS.

Kid Icarus Uprising will have both local and online multiplayer with 3v3 team matches and "battle royales" announced so far for modes.
Demos will be arriving soon on the eShop for 3DS games with 5 games announced as the 1st batch although only in Japan with no news on when the demo service will be added to other regions. The demos are limited in a sense that they only allow 30 play sessions or boot-ups before becoming inactive.
