Current rumor is the 3DS Lite could be arriving around a Spring 2012 release date although it might just be in Japan. No 2nd stick would be built-in but the battery life would be improved by a lot and the system itself would be lighter.

The whole thing is just speculation and I assume the 2nd stick wouldn't be added because Capcom somehow has "exclusive rights" to the thing because they co-developed it and are selling it as a bundle with Resident Evil Revelations.

Gamestop is holding a special promotion for the 3DS and dropping its price by $20 ($149) for all new 3DS handhelds from now until February 12.

Nintendo held a special Direct conference viewable from the 3DS with a new Mario Tennis game called Mario Tennis Open arriving this May and the NES game of Kid Icraus getting the 3D Classic treatment.

The biggest new feature is the way you interact with friends. There is still the classic local play for up to 4 players (over WiFi), but now you can play online with your friends, or play an open match against a stranger (stranger danger).

There will be some form of online progression, including leaderboards, and various events. There will of course be implementation of new control schemes like using the touch-screen will supplement buttons for specific volleys and the gyroscope can be used to look around the court by tilting the 3DS. Intense rallies and Peach in a mini-skirt are all coming to the 3DS on May 20th.

The 3D Classic of Kid Icarus is set to arrive around the same week as Kid Icarus Uprising on the 3DS.


Multiplayer modes for Kid Icarus Uprising was also revealed today with a Light vs Dark mode and a Free-For-All mode explained.
Kid Icarus Uprising multiplayer was detailed showing off a few modes. The Light vs. Dark is an interesting combat mode that requires teamwork to win. Three player teams essentially share a health bar and weapon enough players have died, one will be reincarnated as Pit (or Dark Pit). Thos angels must be defended in a sort of last man standing mode, first team to lose their angel, lose the match. There is also a Free-For-All mode, which much like the Light vs. Dark mode, can be played online and globally.

As part of Nintendo's plan to lure in more digital and indie games for the eshop, the file size cap was expanded from the small 40 MB the Wii and DS used to now 2GB as the current standard.

To put it into perspective, the current card size for 3DS games is about 2GB with only Capcom's Resident Evil Revelations exceeding it.

Looks like everything is leaning towards a new model being shown off Wensday but it won't have the 2nd stick and instead be a "XL" model with at least the bottom screen being about 1/3 bigger (1 extra inch).

It appears there might a big split within Nintendo over the idea of releasing a redesigned 3DS any time soon with Miyamoto against the idea of a "Lite" or a new version being possible and the "boss" of the 3DS division, Hideki Konno, hinting an XL version like the DS could be possible for Smash Bros 3DS.

Miyamoto would rather have the focus be made on improving the 3D effects for games while Konno would favor bigger screens to help improve gameplay.

Some mixed news on how much of an improvement the new battery is with some places saying it ranges between an extra 1.5 to 3.5 hours while some are saying its only an extra 1.5 hours compared to the original battery. Almost the same type of battery used on Samsung's Galaxy tablets but a bit smaller in size for comparisons with other devices.

It basically depends on what is being played and the light/3d levels being used for the screen. Playing a DS game with the new battery provides an extra 1-2 hours on average.

Nintendo is offering an incentive for purchasing the digital version of New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3DS with at least Japan and UK/Europe's incentives revealed.

In Japan, buying the digital version of the game or Demon Training (new Brain Age game) will give you double the usual amount of Club Nintendo coins for the game and Donkey Kong on the 3DS Vurtual Console for free.

In the UK (and maybe Europe), you get an extra 20 Club Nintendo coins to go on top of the usual 40 coins 3DS games provide.

No news on if North America will have their own incentive goodies.

The promotion is also part of a larger test promotion for digital versions of games to include extra goodies over their retail counter-parts starting next month.

Capcom community manager Brett Elston corrected the information in a tweet this week, shouting "Hold it!" before opening the Twitter post window (we imagine).

"Not the case," Elston. "Just those iconic key phrases!" The original interview, then, suggests that those clips will be re-recorded for the 3DS's improved audio capabilities.

New Super Mario Bros 2 on the 3DS is getting special free DLC from now until January 31, 2013.

The DLC is a series of Coin Rush level packs based on classic SMB 1 and SMB 3 levels.

Nintendo released the free-for-now Gold Classics Pack based on iconic levels from Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3.

The first of the pack's three courses looks to be based on 1-1 and 1-2 from the first Super Mario Bros. As for the second course, that looks like a mixture of offerings from SMB3, including the always-vicious arcade minigame. Finally, the third course invites players back to Bowser's castle, as per SMB1. As shown by the above Nintendo Direct, the pack offers NSMB2-themed twists on the two NES classics, including multiple routes.

The nostalgia-stuffed DLC is free until January 31, 2013, after which it costs $2.50

Luigi's Mansion has been confirmed to have multiplayer in the form of 4-player co-op called "ScareScraper." No details on if its only local or also online.

This teamwork based multiplayer mode has multiple Luigi clearing out floor after floor of ghosts before you run out of time. Based on a team’s performance you can earn various bonuses and powerups between floors, with boss battle taking place at the top floor. With the number of floors ranging between 5 and 25, it will bring a lot more gameplay to share with your friends.

According to people who've played the demo for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate, the demo currently in the eShop is not from any current build and instead is basically the same demo which was shown at E3 last year.

Nintendo announces they are releasing 4 free DLC packs for Fire Emblem: Awakening with all of them arriving during this Spring period.

The first new map is “A Hard Miracle,” available now in North America.

“Ghost of Blade” will be available March 28, “Wellspring of Trust” on April 11, and finally “The Radiant Hero” on April 25.

Special weapons, additional playable characters, and bonus challengers for the game’s Double Duel multiplayer mode will also be released for free through SpotPass in the coming weeks.

Some updates, sales, and other stuff was recently announced by Nintendo and others.

First is a digital tool that allows saves to be transferable between physical and digital versions of 3DS games and has arrived with the recent 3DS firmware update. Another thing was an improvement to multi-tasking when it comes to downloading.

• A tool that allows Nintendo 3DS users to transfer save data from the packaged version of a game to the downloadable version. Players that originally purchased a physical version of a game will be able to pick up right where they left off with their save data if they decide to purchase the digital version of the same game. Save data that is transferred to a digital game cannot be moved back to the physical version.

• An improvement to the feature that downloads items in the background when the Nintendo 3DS system is in Sleep Mode. Items will now download when the Nintendo eShop is running. Users can simply close the system cover to activate the "Download Later" feature and the game or application will begin to download.

I've played chunks of Bravely Default and it's up there with those two as well. Add in Animal Crossing, Mario Kart 7, Mario 3D Land, Smash Bros, Luigis Mansion 2, Fire Emblem and hopefully a localisation of Ace Attorney 5 and this is the greatest handheld of all time. Seriously, that horrible start got Nintendo in panic mode and it's glorious. Hoping the Wii U follows suit, although HD assets might make progress slower.

According to Eiji Aonuma, A Link to the Past 2 contains a huge surprise at the start of the game.

Nintendo Direct Highlights:

Upcoming firmware update will include Miiverse, Nintendo Network ID, and option to merge the 3DS and Wii U eshop balances into a single account balance. The only downside is once a Nintendo Network ID is made, can't have separate balance accounts for different regions.

Q: I have used Nintendo eShop in different regions, and I have funds in multiple currencies in my balance. What will happen to these funds after I register a Nintendo Network ID?

A: After registering a Nintendo Network ID, you will be unable to change regions and use multiple currencies – for instance, pounds and euros – in Nintendo eShop. The funds in the currency that corresponds to the country setting of your Nintendo Network ID will remain, and any funds in other currencies will be deleted and no longer usable. Please make sure to use up any other currencies before registering a Nintendo Network ID to your Nintendo 3DS system.
