What Would Kevin Do?

Bison would have made a whole lot more sense instead of Akuma.

Yeah... I love Akuma, but he plays like Ryu, and since they are less characters in this game than 2, I'll take diversity.

Sakura > Bison

She should have been the secret character, and the sub-boss.

Sakura MvC3 Movelist:

Hadoken: 236+A/B/C (chargeable, Air-OK)
Hadoken Anti-Air: 214+A/B/C (chargeable, Air-OK (Downward angle in air))
Senpuu Kyaku: 214+A/B/C (Air-OK)
- Senpuu Launch Kick: S (after C Senpuu only, works like SF4 EX Senpuu)
Jump Smash: 623+S
- Smash: A/B/C (after Jump Smash, 3 hits max)
Shouken: 623+A/B/C

Hyper Shinku Hadoken: 236+2x Attack Button (Choose straight or high angle during super freeze)
Hyper Karu Ichiban: 214+2x Attack Button (sweeps hits low)
Lvl3 Hyper Schoolgirl Rush Down (series of attacks from cool angles ending with "That's a wrap" stomp)

Also give her air dash. DLC now.

Simple Mode Adjusted (and perhaps finalized):

The light attack button will auto chain your attacks for you. Medium attack will work your special moves, and hard attack will perform your supers. The bottom row of buttons, launch, assist 1, and assist 2, do not change in simple mode. [On an arcade stick, though the function will remain on a pad most likely]

Because Simple Mode reduces the move set of a character, it's kinda balanced in a way - so people already expect that this will be allowed in tournaments. Who knows, maybe a sub-group of players may prefer it over normal play (it's happened before).

Far as I'm concerned, if it works for you than you can use it against me. I won't be a baby about it.

How MvC3 handles online quitters:
The game will keep an invisible stat which monitors your connection habits. If it notices you pulling the plug during online games, it will start marking your reputation down. No-one else will see it, but the utterly amazing outcome is this: Rage quitters will be matched up with other rage quitters, allowing everyone else to enjoy the game in peace. Amazing.

DAMNIT. Europe gets all the good pre-order shit.

Decisions, decisions, eh? What do you do when you'd actually quite like to have every one of the pre-order bonuses on offer for Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds? Sadly, there's not much you can do, short of buying the game multiple times over. But that's just stupid.

Capcom has announced the European pre-order incentives for its forthcoming comic-book scrapper, with the majority of retailers getting different T-shirts in a variety of colours and designs, from different Marvel artists.

Blockbuster Video gets the yellow design, GAME gets the brown tee, while HMV gets the fetching red number, GameStop gets the light blue shirt, independent game retailers get the grey one, orders from The Hut bag the dark olive green T-shirt and finally, a pre-order from Xtravision will get you a dark blue T-shirt. Look at the images below to see the tees listed inthe order we stated above.

If however, T-shirts just aren't your bag, then you can pre-order Marvel vs. Capcom 3 from ShopTo.net and nab yourself a free MvC comic book or go for GameStation's offer of slick steelbook packaging. As we said, it's a tough call, so consider your choice carefully.

Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds is out in Europe on February 18th, 2011. North American gamers can get their mitts on the exclusive Collector's Edition from GameStop, featuring unique packaging and console decals on February 15th, 2011.

Will there be a random feature for selecting characters?

Seth: Yes.

Will the random feature go as far as picking your whole team for you (via not knowing who your team is until the battle begins)?

Seth: You can pick randomly one character at a time, or you can choose to have a totally random team. You can back out of any particular character choice, but once you have selected all 3 plus their assists, you are committed. This means if you opt for the fully random team, you are locked into that random team.

Will you be able to change your controllers on the character select screen like Blazblue?

Seth: No.

Is there any other details you would like to share about the character select screen?

Seth: It also has a nice feature called "Reserve Unit" where you can "turn a page" on the select screen and find your three most commonly chosen teams + assists as pre-selectable items. If you're like most people and tend to play a few set teams, you can have those teams queued up and ready to rock without having to go scroll through the entire select screen every time. Very handy time-saver.

Not important but someone has looked at the alt colours for each character and suggested what they may be based on (e.g. Zeros blue alt colour is supposed to represent Megaman etc.)
Some of them make sense but others seem a bit of a stretch.

Dante has a ton of moves. This video shows a lot of them (though I doubt 40+) and there are more not shown because the guy demoing him can't remember them. The video also shows some stuff for Spiderman and Wolverine.

Kalyx triaD
01-16-2011, 01:12 PM
Some people are tripping over Dante's moves like they're overwhelming, like there aren't 3D fighting gamers who haven't dealt with 50-70 moves before.

Drakul
01-16-2011, 01:14 PM
It is a lot for an MvC game. As far as I know, MvC2 characters had something like 10 moves max, didn't they?

Kalyx triaD
01-16-2011, 01:40 PM
Around that number, I'd say Cable and Strider had an expansive movelist. But it's nothing people can't handle. You instinctively use the right moves for the right situation (especially with this game being more yomi styled than MvC2's execution style). I wanna see more characters like Dante in the future.

Downside, like in 3D fighters, is that people will button mash more than usual because there are moves for more random combination of mashes. We're going to see a lot of Dante mashing! I'm gonna assume they'll get caught by hyper moves more than anyone.

Those are some pretty good T-Shirts.

I don't know exactly what it means by "independent game retailers" though, as I thought that meant supermarkets. I've checked the websites of the supermarks over here in the UK and it's only ASDA that are giving you a T-shirt if you pre-order and it's the black T-Shirt, not the grey T-Shirt.

I don't know which one to get though as they're all good in their own way, but at I am leaning towards getting either the brown T-Shirt or the black T-Shirt.

I'm undecided. :(

I've read that player points aren't exclusive to online mode in MvC3. Not sure if it's true or not but it makes sense. If you have no internet but bought the game, you'd need to be able to unlock them somehow.

The combos thing kinda worries me too. Don't feel like sitting around watching someone hit a 52474272 hit combo on me for 10 seconds because I got hit once.

The marvel/capcom fan in me is giddy for this, but the fighting game fan in me is skeptical because I am not good at "hyper-fighters". I am better at slower, more strategic affairs like ssf4 and tekken.

1) Since Phoenix has a very low health what advice could you give us on how using her?

Don't get hit :) Sounds like I'm kidding, but I'm not. She's a beast on offense, but can't take a hit, so yeah. If you're the kind of player that doesn't mind taking a few hits to get into that sweet spot, Phoenix is not really for you. You might give similar advice to someone playing Strider in MVC2 (though she doesn't play like Strider).

2) Her healing shield have some defense proprieties? or only heals her?

No defensive properties, and it only heals her while an opponent is touching the field. That is to say if you try and activate it and run, you won't heal yourself at all. Healing has to be incorporated into her rush/block strings to have a significant effect.

3) Can we use Dark Phoenix for unlimited time in the training mode?

Yes.

4) Can Dark Phoenix tag out? Will she still loose health if she tag out or will heal like everyone else?

She heals like everybody else when she tags out. When you call D Phoenix as an assist, her assist move also gets her "Dark Phoenix" bonus too (e.g. 2 fireballs instead of one).

5) What the X-Factor does to Dark Phoenix?

X-Factor affects everyone a little differently, but it doesn't give Phoenix a unique additional buff--she's already terrifying enough. Oddly the existing videos haven't really shown off the best bits of what Dark Phoenix is all about, but we'll correct that soon... :)

Shuma Riff Raff:

Do the MvC3 devs look at MvC2 for ideas (Normals, Specials & Supers) for returning characters who weren't very strong, but were pretty strong in other vs titles, such as Marvel Super Heroes, and Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter?

Example, Shuma Gorath wasn't very tough in MvC2, but was a beast in Marvel Super Heroes, and good in Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. Do the devs take the time to find out what made em so viable in those titles and try to implement it into Marvel vs Capcom 3? — Shuma_G_Gorath

Seth Killian: It's not a question of "not understanding" why he was good in a past game — the devs that made him good in older games are many of the same guys that are working on him now. It's also not a question you can really address on a character-by-character basis. You can actually give Shuma more tools in, say, MvC2 than he had in MSH, but he doesn't necessarily become a stronger character because strength is relative to the other characters in the title. That's a long way of saying it's comparing apples to oranges, in some cases, and a lot of those strengths have more to do with the overall game engine and other characters' possibilities than with, "well he had this move and it was good."

Blah blah blah, right? =) Anyway, unlike Jill, Shuma in MvC3 will be immediately recognizable to long-time fans. He definitely has some new brand new juice, and some new tweaks to old tricks, but there's no question he's still the Shuma you remember. His animation also looks really great (for a slimy tentacle demon) but you'll believe that when you see him...

Nice matches tonight fellas, until I started lagging out when that last guy came in (kicked me twice). Gambit's wall dive is very hard to connect, and even if it does it doesn't really combo into anything. That guy doing the Iron Man/War Machine infinite was a douche, let's have privates next time.

Following my ideal MvC3 movelists for Sakura and Bison, I made two more:

I've just found out that Europe isn't getting the LE of MvC3. As usual, Capcom are trying to make excuses about not having time or fan interest or good enough content or whatever.
First no LE for SSFIV and now no LE for MvC3. I'd much rather have LE than a shirt.

Well it's not something to get deep into considering. Very little of MvC2 gameplay will transfer to MvC3. You only really need to get used to the pace of assists and and following the game. Other than that you're probably better served by TvC.

Just had a match with a faggot-ass Storm/Sent/CapCom player who pretty much went through the motions. I started using Cammy to double jump-dive kick his stomping Sent because Sent can't block while flying. So he puts in "OH, OH, OH" Storm but she can't beat my Cammy anti-air assist. I lose anyway because I couldn't keep up with Storm when he finally flew around whiff-building meter and doing her hail storm.

Can't wait for that shit to end in MvC3.

If Wolverine from the X-Men and Ryu from Street Fighter got into a fight, who would win? This is the sort of question that fuels the development of games like Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. This crossover fighting game features memorable characters from the Marvel universe and the Capcom games library, just like the previous Marvel vs. Capcom titles that launched years ago.

We've assembled a list of all the characters that have been officially confirmed for a playable appearance in Marvel vs. Capcom 3. We'll keep this list updated as new characters are announced, so be sure to check back in the coming weeks as Marvel vs. Capcom 3's release date of February 15th draws closer.

It's not hard to get people to play games, male or female. As long as you've played the game long enough to have the good stuff unlocked and you don't slaughter everyone you play with, everyone's up for it now and then, regardless of genre.

Simple Mode should make it much more fun for non-gamers. It will make them feel they have a chance against people that play a lot so they'll enjoy it more.

I don't read comics but I just found out that Taskmaster is a villain.

When I heard his name, he sounded like a villian but then I saw his trailer and heard his theme and voice he looks and sounds more like a hero than a villain. The only "villain" thing to his look is the skull mask/face.

Was a villain for a long time, but in the past 5 years or so, he's become kind of an anti-hero, thanks to his association with deadpool.

That makes sense, I guess.

His powers are mimicing peoples movements and voices. So That'll be why he has Spidermans web swing in MvC3, then.
If he mimics movement (which seems to be represented in the game as having moves from other characters) Seth would have been a good equivilent, wouldn't he?

There is a 14 page run down of characters (http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3183109) at 1up.com. I didn't read it all but two things I did read was that Haggars lariet causes him to lose some health, like in the FF games and Deadpool has a teleport move that randomly malfunctions.

It appears that Ryota Niitsuma, Marvel vs. Capcom 3's producer, has disconfirmed Sentinel in an interview conducted with Eurogamer Espana (Google Translate link), which was originally written in Spanish.

This normally wouldn't be too big of a deal, but someone posting under the name Lupinko has been leaking information about MvC3 for some time, and has been extremely accurate to date, revealing numerous characters in advance. He claimed Sentinel and Hsien-Ko would be announced, but Niitsuma's statement today goes directly against one of his predictions.

Here's a translated version of the relevant paragraph from RyanCE.

Ryota Niitsuma: Indeed, we could not choose characters that were not on [Marvel's] list, and if there were some we wanted to use Marvel told us "do not pick that, take this one instead." In this sense, we wanted to bring back a couple of characters from MvC2, such as Juggernaut and Sentinel, but we could not.

Many people are currently split over who to believe on this since Lupinko has been so accurate to date, but Niitsuma is the title's producer.

Other things of note from the article include:

• The first DLC package won't be expensive. When asked about the schedule for DLC, Niitsuma said they haven't already planned this, but, "Potentially we could release a DLC [package] every two weeks..."

• Niitsuma talks about the possibility of releasing a balance patch once the game has launched, although Capcom has made other statements like this in the past for the Street Fighter 4 series, saying they can patch the game after wards, if needed.

• There's at least one character to be revealed besides the 36 member roster. This might be Galactus, as an unplayable boss.

Every two weeks? Holy shit.

01-22-2011, 06:42 PM
I don't know if it would be doable unless they already had a large roster of DLC characters to slowly dole out over the first few months but it would definitly be profitable. MvC3 could be a goldmine through it's DLC. People will always be asking for Megaman or Carnage or other Marvel/Capcom characters.

Emperor Smeat
01-22-2011, 08:30 PM
Capcom probably is worried about unbalancing the roster too heavy on Capcom's side since its much easier and quicker for them to upload a character than to request a character not on the list of approved from Marvel.

Some rumors and news were leaked for this game:

1) It possible but wouldn't occur anytime soon for a 3DS version of this game to be released. Biggest issue is if Capcom ports the game, they would want the 3D to be a big feature and right now it would take too much work and Capcom doesn't want to the team to work on a portable version.

2) Frank West was meant to be in the game but taken out due to Capcom having problems deciding on his moves and then animating them. Also having his moves be too complex for the game in design and issues with balancing the character like they've done with the rest of the roster.

3) Phoenix Wright most likely will be a DLC character in the near future if the game sells well in Europe since that is where the Ace Attorney series sells the best.

Dante's Movelist:

http://toal.jp/mvc3/movelist.jpeg

Love it. Glad he has an overhead with the Beowulf II combo (axe kick). It's also been confirmed that his air series is jump cancelable, so I can cross train BB's Ragna air combos into Dante's (and Chun Li for that matter, couldn't get the hang of it in TvC fast enough).

Also:

<iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/D9sBlcu79k8" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe>

You can see some of Dante's 'mash cancels' in action, as well as some other combos. The last bit shows how X-Factor can be used to cancel block stun and if you're fast enough, input a hyper with enough invincibility to punish moves. The implications are pretty crazy there.

Here's my question: Where do all the DLC characters go? I mean right now it only looks like four slots are available, and two are already going to be filled. Don't really know how easy it would be to patch smaller squares in or something.

Boomer
01-26-2011, 08:29 PM
I mean maybe there won't be more than four, and all the DLC will just be costume packs.

Drakul
01-26-2011, 08:36 PM
They could put DLC characters in the other squares and have everyone move over one spot when you want to bring the DLC from off screen to on screen by turning the globe a little.

Or the more practical solution would be to change the empty corners to DLC selecters. Select the tile and a window pops up like the "Simple/pro" mode select with a picture and name of each DLC character you have.

They're due to be officially revealed within the next week. I wouldn't be surprised if it was Thursday or Friday this week.

I think after the reveal they'll put out another trailer just before release showing off game modes.

I can't remember if it was here or somewhere else but someone suggested it might have two single player modes. One would be your standard Arcade mode. Pick your team and fight X amount of battles before facing the end boss.
The other mode being story mode where you watch a cutscene and play as characters from that scene in a fight against the other characters in that scene. Afterwards you get the next scene with other characters and you play as them etc.

It would be weird if Arcade mode had these scenes and then you get a fight that's not related to the scene at all. I'm sure Seth said they were all in the game and that the game had a story. Plus there is at least one we haven't seen. The one with Felicia.

Kalyx triaD
01-27-2011, 01:59 AM
Yeah, separate single player modes seem likely. Would love to see what's happening online, though. Wouldn't mind some of SSF4's stuff getting in there. Replay theater and such (with added search function, and add that to SSF4AE for that matter).

There's some clues that the game will have a persistent currency* system similar to PEC seen in Splinter Cell, Halo Reach, Rainbow Six, and others. I think Player Points can now be earned in most if not all modes. Ranked points will most likely not change and be separate.

*Maybe not currency so much as points. But the mechanic would be the same.

Drakul
01-27-2011, 02:03 AM
Well you unlock certain characters by getting so much PP, would some kind of Smackdown Mall style section be too unlikely? Buy characters, colours, stages, artwork, music tracks etc?

Probably not going to happen, though.

Edit: And it's been said you get points outside of online mode. I still like the idea of 3 players vs 3 players online. Everyone being one character in a team. Everyone would have to stay on their toes and work togethor.

Kalyx triaD
01-27-2011, 02:09 AM
Well MvC2 had a very similar system so it wouldn't the first time, and SoulCalibur 4 also had a system of purchasing things like characters and artwork. It may well work like SSF4 and things just get unlocked as you go, without you choosing to get anything.

We just need more details.

And there we have it, on disc characters revealed. Bring on the play modes.

I wouldn't be too sure. The character page on the MvC3 site (http://marvelvscapcom3.com/us/characters) still has room for one more Marvel and one more Capcom character. Maybe we'll have some surprise last minute addition revealed? If there is no more characters to be revealed, I'd have thought they'd have had a different layout for the page. Also, as cool as Hsien-Ko and Sentinel are, they aren't exactly a climactic final reveal, are they?

If that's not the case, I'm guessing they at least have 2 more DLC characters lined up right behind Jill and Shuma Gorath.

Also, minor spoiler on the subject of music:
The same guy that leaked the character list has supposedly said the character select music used in videos has been removed and replaced with a techno remix of "Take You For A Ride".

There's some speculation that all the leaks were viral marketing by Capcom. That MvC3 is one of the most leaked games in recent memory adds credibility to that. Also it would be strange knowing so much about the roster, but not anything about modes or other details. And Capcom could have easily handled a leaker internally if they wanted. So even if Capcom isn't leaking stuff themselves, they're certainly allowing it.

Also there a pic of Bison going around but it seems suspect.

It would seem Ryu is calling Bison for assist, but there's no speech bubble showing Bison belongs to Player 2. And how convenient his name is on a smaller lowres bar instead of being on point. Surely the same opportunity to get this pic could have been used to get him standing in place.

And the guy who mocked it up admitted it on the MvC3 Facebook page a short while ago.

Still would be nice to have Bison, anyway. Lots of people want him.

I think any more reveals might just be DLC characters. I'm not sure who I would like it to be, though.

I think it would be sort of cool to have a pair of "WTF" characters. Ono for Capcom and Stan Lee for Marvel.
No idea what moves they'd have but it would be cool in a weird sort of way.

They could add little details like Ono calling characters by their Japanese names etc and Stan Lee calling Hulk "The Incredible Hulk" or Spiderman "The Amazing Spiderman" and saying "Excelsior!" when he triggers his Level 5 super, whatever that'd be.

It would be a cool way to immortalise them both. A game that has a lot of their creations in it is as good as any. Plus it's not like these Vs games haven't had weird inclusions before.
Example:
http://images.wikia.com/marvelvscapcom/images/3/38/Mvc2-amingo.jpg
http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/us/Games/M/Marvel%20vs%20Capcom%202/Everything%20Else/MVC2%20Bios/ART/Finished/mvc2-ruby-heart--article_image.jpg
http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/2986/488122-norimaro_large.gif

May as well have random characters that are at least related to the other characters for once. Never going to happen, I know, but I think it would be cool.

Kalyx triaD
01-28-2011, 10:24 PM
I read ya, but this is more Niitsuma's(SP) bag rather than Ono. Still would be interesting going all out.

More likely they're gonna appeal to fan requests for DLC. Most of MvC3's roster was what the creators wanted to do, now they may service the fans more. This means Mega-Man (some version), Phoenix Wright, Venom, Gambit, etc.

Drakul
01-28-2011, 10:44 PM
Yeah, I know it wouldn't happen. I didn't think it would. I said Ono because he's the more well known Capcom guy other than the guy that made Megaman whose name I forgotten right now.

Megaman is going to be in eventually, that's obvious, but the reason he's not on disc is because he was too similair to Arthur, supposedly. So, if they added him, it would have to be the Megaman from Legends or some other variation that isn't the MvC2 one or any like Zero.

I've finding it hard to think of anyone else I'd like so DLC isn't really as big a deal as I thought it would be for me. If DLC comes out, I'll likely get it but no ones on my wishlist.

Venom, B.B Hood and Juggernaut are the only characters I'll miss from MvC2 as I've played that to the point where I'm competant with at least 6 characters, the other 3 already being in MvC3 plus new characters to try out.

Kalyx triaD

Iron Man
Wolverine
Magneto
Spider-Man
Chun-Li

Plus characters I simply love and will adopt in MvC3:

Venom and Carnage has a lot of overlap. So does Strider and Dante. Talbain looks cool but I don't know how he plays so I can't say much about him.

If anything we'll see Venom before Carnage. I'd love to see the new Spec-Ops Venom but Eddie Venom would be awesome (I play with him). Strider's not happening since there's a third party to deal with and Capcom likes easier deals. At this point Talbain may have to wait for the Darkstalkers reboot if Ono gets his way.

Still pissed that we have dread locked Bionic Commando

I'd rather have had "RAD" Spencer from the original game/Rearmed than "gritty, sweary, angsty" Spencer from the reboot. Maybe he'll be an alt costume like he was in the reboot.

I don't like Strider. Mostly because I'm sick of male ninjas in fighting games. They all have to be the same super serious type that everyone finds "bad ass" for some reason and they all have that slam move I think is called a bushido *something*. They throw you in the air, leap up, grab you and drive you into the ground when you're both upside down. Strider has it, Guy has it in his Ultra, Hayabusa has it in DOA and I'm sure there are others.
It's not like they are basing these moves off of things people do in reality like they do with, say, wrestler characters. Ninjas in fiction are romanticized characters so they could have any elaborate move they want so why do they all have that bushido slam move and why are they all the same stern, serious "bad ass" character? I don't need a ninja clown or anything but a little variation would be good.

That move is called the Izuna Drop. Vega, being a Spanish ninja bullfighter guy, uses it often. I call it the DBZ Drop, ever since Vegeta suffered it in the Namek saga. I love the move, it totally sells that your ass is owned. It's an elaborate german suplex where they both land vertically yet the guy doing the move is okay. Sometimes they spin sometimes not... There's a wicked version in the last Naruto UNS game by Rock Lee. Badass.

BlazeBlue has a ninja who toys with the role of 'ninja guy'. He's an over the top hero who even has theme music play when you activate a special of his. He seems to play up the stereotype well.

ashstampede: Will the prima guide include frame data or more meat and potatos
information for fighting game fans or will it just include basic Move
list and beginning guide tips for X character. like the Street fighter
4 guide minus the frame data spread sheet in the back.

Seth Killian: The MVC3 guide is one of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s got frame data, legitimate high-level strategies, a great overall breakdown of how the game systems work, traps, character specific tricks, assist advice, great combos (standard bread-and-butters, situational, trick-shots, etc.). We were able to get some extremely talented and smart players working on the guide, and I’ve been really impressed by the work they’ve done–I even learned a few new tricks from the guide myself.

Fear4TheHero47: Will DLC characters have story modes, endings, and challenges/missions
as well?

Seth Killian:Yes, yes, and yes :)

Taj: I was wondering if you could comment on how the game’s net code is? Is
it an improvement over Super Street Fighter IV?

Seth Killian: The MVC3 netcode was done by the same engineers that did Super SFIV. Of course I haven’t been able to play it “in the wild” yet while everyone else is online too, but the tests have all been solid, and there are some nice added touches like better algorithms to determine other players’ true connection quality and avoid slow connections, and of course “rage-quitter hell.”

Natty: Do you think that MvC3 has a chance of being bigger than Super? For
example judging by entrants at EVO

Seth Killian: Considering how big MVC2 was even many years after its release, I definitely think MVC3 has a chance to be the biggest game in EVO history. Because the game is so easy to get into, but so thick with possibilities and tricks (just wait until you get into training mode–I always say that’s truly where people fall in love with MVC3), I might even be willing to bet on it.

EspadaJerome: Will mvc3 have a endless battle like SSF4???

Seth Killian: Yes, you can use the player lobbies to create an endlessly rotating playlist of opponents.

Vulcan786: How was the balancing decided? was it based on how powerfull each
character is in his/her respective game/comic for example The devil
trigger for Dante did you guys think “he was mad powerfull in the DMC
games and we’ll make it just like that” and a similar thought process
for other characters i.e. Arthurs Golden Armour or was it a different
thought process?

Seth Killian: The comics and backstory were used to decide move sets and some special powers, but not relative character strength. As a result, overall game balance was basically unrelated to those things, but I think that’s the right approach, because otherwise (for example) Chun Li would just have zero chance against the Hulk. We don’t start out with an idea about “so-and-so should be really powerful”–instead the job is to give everyone a fun set of tools that fit their character and backstory, and balancing begins from there.

Aion: There seems to be so much effort put into this game; in terms of
strats/tricks/team combinations/plethoras of moves etc and other
little quirks…do you think much of the effort put into this game may
be overshadowed/neglected due to 100% combo’s?

Seth Killian: Not from what we’ve seen so far. You can of course kill anyone with enough meters and/or X-Factor, but obviously the match isn’t over after you kill just one character, and burning your X-Factor is one of the most critical decisions you’ll make in the entire match. So it’s easy to make any character look unbeatable if you just look at a part of the match, but spending all your juice for one 100% combo may not pay off long-term.

Don Joff: Why do some characters need to be unlocked?
With SSF4 I assumed Capcom understood that it is undesirable to be
forced to unlock characters so it was removed. But why has it returned
for MvC3?

Seth Killian: The team understands the feelings of Western players, but also feel that Japanese fans generally enjoy unlocking. As a result, MVC3 strikes a balance between the different desires–there are still a few gameplay-affecting unlocks, but they are far easier to accomplish than they were in, say, original SFIV. You unlock characters, etc. by earning “points,” and you can get points for doing virtually everything. Playing online, in arcade mode, doing a combo in training, etc. Just as an example, a few arcade-mode playthroughs and a little time in training mode or mission mode would probably be enough to unlock all of the characters. My builds have everything unlocked already, but I think anyone should be able to unlock all the characters (although not all the fun side stuff, like titles, etc.) without much trouble in a single play-session over a few hours.

An interview with good questions? Hot damn.

Cool so every character has their own story and ending. Wasn't aware of that.

Clarification... take a seat:

There is no story, just an arcade mode with a fairly epic boss battle. Every character has an ending (portrait and text, oldschool style). Unless the final game has something we're not seeing, this is all there is. Not even sure where the cool movies fit in (probably like the unlockable clips in the original SF4).

Would have liked for real-time cutscenes. Might as well put those great voice actors to work and set up cool scenes. In general the feature package is looking kinda shallow. This may be what it means for Capcom to be fully focused on gameplay rather than features. Keep in mind we haven't gotten any word on features, not so much as a trailer for them, this close to launch.

And there is no replay function. Even spectating in lobbies will be patched in the game post-launch. Thank Zod this is a kick-ass game, though.

No vids of Jill and Shuma yet, but Capcom did release this:

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hJxzu3mCzx8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And they announced future DLC, Shadow Mode, where you fight AI that fights like the creators and even top players. Sounds interesting, though I don't know if I'd drop dollar for that. Capcom says this may drop in March.

Somebody claims to not only have a legit copy of the game, but hacked it and discovered that Frank West and Elektra are poised for DLC spots. He also claims the game has spots for more characters than that, and the game will end up with 46 characters in the end. Of course, we don't have to believe any of this.

Remember when MvC3 was supposed to drop in the Spring? When it got bumped up, I think that came at the cost of certain features. In time, I think MvC3's true feature set will trickle in as DLC (replay mode, shadow mode, maybe more). That's my guess, though.

Officially taking on Wesker as a point character. I will team him with Jill and X23. Wesker and his girls.

The last few RE5 packs and the last costumes for SSF4 were legit downloads, so they're learning. But Jill and Shuma are certainly on disc. Frank West and Elektra most likely, Shadow Mode not at all. Need to drop those vids for Jill and Shuma already.

I dunno. I kinda feel that any DLC that is released within the month of the games release is already on disc, or was purposely cut back to make some money on. Not saying it s a bad strategy, and not complaining (mainly because im a dirty pirate), but its just one of those "things".

Interesting that big releases like Halo has the question of who will be online, but big fighting game releases has the question of big meetings, where the sessions will be, etc.

In the dragonball omega z kai universe, a chicken has a power level of 5 thousand and can typically execute a budokan dragon kick, capable of paralying most enemies. This is not to be confused with dragonaball omega gt kai chickens, who can transform into several different forms, and increase their power exponentially.

Until I got an xbox 360, most of my time with fighting games was spent in an arcade.

Fignuts
02-07-2011, 05:34 PM
Though that time admittedly, was mostly with tekken. Didn't play too many 2-d fighters with the stick, but I am beyond a shadow of a doubt, more comfortable with 3-d fighters on a stick.

Boomer
02-07-2011, 05:34 PM
Well I grew up playing SSF2T on the first PC my family owned with a CD Drive, so I was boned there. Couldn't even do a 360 move on a keyboard.

Boomer
02-07-2011, 05:35 PM
And yeah, I played more Tekken in arcades than anything else too. Played until 4, and got bored with it at 5.

Fignuts
02-07-2011, 05:45 PM
I got pretty damned good at 4 and 5, but then my friend who owned them moved. Being a poor college student at the time, I couldn't even afford a ps2. So I didn't end up playing again until Tekken 6. At which point I had forgotten a lot. And tekken isn't like Street Fighter, where you can take a hiatus, and then be back in proper form after a few matches. There is so much more to remember.

I once beat a guy in team battle in tekken 4 so bad, he quit tekken forever. Beat all 8 of his guys with my first. Granted, my first was Jin, who was horribly unbalanced in 4.

Will you increase Phoenix's health in MvC3?

Seth Killian: No Phoenix health buffs just yet, sorry :) Her health has continued to go down over the course of development based precisely on our extreme respect for her overall potential.

I keep saying it, but nobody likes the answer because it's a tough one: If you want to win with Phoenix, don't get hit. It's tough, but not impossible. She's not for beginners, and I would never start a match with her, but she's one of the most explosive characters in the game.

On point she has a terrifying rush and extreme mobility (8-way airdash, speed, flying, instant teleport to multiple positions), and an effective way to set it up from far away (tracking fireballs). Her Phoenix traps and faster fireballs are also a solid keepaway, and when she "goes dark" you can totally flood the screen with projectiles. She's very, very good.

Her low health is her weakness, but it's also not quite as bad as it seems because:

1) She has a healing-field hyper. It works, and fast. If you combine that with a solid rush pattern, she can recover a big chunk of her life rather quickly if she's willing to approach.

2) With Dark Phoenix mode, she essentially has *two* lifebars. It's not quite that simple of course, but she does get a full bar back, and even a mini-combo breaker when she turns (she pops out of whatever was happening to her when she turns, though some things (like some projectile hypers) will continue hitting her after she finishes the transformation).

Phoenix is a high-wire act. She can stay alive and just dominate you, but in order to do it she has to be routinely putting herself into dangerous situations (re: getting near you). She's super fun to mash with, but winning with her at high levels is a bit like Strider in MvC2 — she's a glass-jawed meter hog, but heaven help you when she starts her rush.
