Word of a new Marvel Vs. Capcom game could be heading our way in the coming months if rumors from website Team Spooky can be believed.

And here's why I think they can: The poster over on Team Spooky saying that Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is inbound is the same person who last summer leaked the entire Super Street Fighter IV roster and got it right.

There's also my interview with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars producer Ryota Niitsuma from earlier this year.

In it, Niitsuma says that a we could be hearing about a new versus game from Capcom this year.

"I would love to do more versus series, more types of games like Marvel Vs. Capcom 2," Niitsuma said. "There are all of these possibilities working with other companies, seeing what we could do with them. There are so many game companies I'd love to work with.

"If sales are really good (for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars) then you can see an announcement within this year," he said.

Also, there's Capcom's annual big news event happening next week in Hawaii. They've got to have something to knock our socks off with right?

Don't worry, we'll be there live to deliver all of the news, impressions and interviews live from the island state.

Source (http://kotaku.com/5511912/marvel-vs-capcom-3-unveiling-soon).

I think the most interesting thing is that it was "leaked" by whoever leaked the SSFIV roster. This looks like it could be true. SSFIV graphics, maybe?

Is it me, or is this virtually identical to the talk of TVC 2?

Also, does it look more like he's talking crossovers with other media groups?

I've seen this jumped on all over the net as MVC 3, but it's possible we're going to see Capcom v McDonalds or Capcom v TNA.

The interview, not the "leak."

I think people are starting to think it's most likely going to be MvC3 because it was said to be MvC3 by the same guy who told us the SSFIV roster before it was announced. He even told us about Juri and Hakan and what their characters and fighting style were before they got announced. Hakan was revealed about a year after he was listed in the guys leaked roster.

Capcom vs Someone-New would be interesting though.

I think I'd prefer the something new. Though I'm hoping they do TVC 2 so I can get it on the Xbox.

On the other hand, the possibility of an updated MVC roster seems pretty cool.

I also heard of an announcement coming in May of one Marve vs Capcom 3, but I didn't wanna post it here because it seemed too good to be true (I really do filter certain musings, CAUSE I LOVE YOU PEOPLE).

As Kane Knight suggests, a reveal of (a multiplatform?) TvC2 seems more likely, but it looks win-win from where I'm standing.

An MvC that wasn't just Marvel Super Heroes and X-Men: CotA could be bad ass. Black Panther, Sentry, Iron Patriot and 34578934658907345890 more recent characters would make for a great game.

Announcement may be sooner than May.

• Confirmed characters so far are Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Hulk, Magneto, Storm and a few others will return.

• The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 development team said they will be blowing fans out of the water with the sheer number of characters this game includes on the disc.

• This will be another 2D fighter — gameplay-wise — but will be something of a cross between the original Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Street Fighter 4.

• The rumored release date is late 2010 or early 2011 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, no plans right now for other systems.

• The game will run in 1080p resolution.

• It will be a disc-based release.

• Apparently the game will have unlockables again.

• The game will be playable at this year's E3 which is held on June 15 - 17th.

So I predict Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 at least announced during Capcom's 'second wave' of next-gen fighters. It may even coincide with the digital release of MvC2. What do you guys think?

So I was wrong about TvC not coming here and when the game would get announced - but I'm happy MvC3 is going down. Flip on the hype switch if you haven't done it already.

Sounds cool. I'm surprised it's going to be playable so soon.

If the roster is going to blow fans out of the water, they must have a bigger roster than MvC2, so that would be over 56 characters.

I'm hoping that leads to a whole hell of a lot of diversity online.

As much as I liked SF4..I think the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom engine was superior and would fit the game more...even if it ever existed...which I highly doubt. One time I was hanging out with my friend talking about this game. He is a huge Christian and we always get into deep theological debates and I told him if they ever make MVC 3 I would suck it up and admit Christianity is the best religion ever.

I will when I see it! I have had my dreams crushed too many times when it comes to MVC 3! :(
Will be interesting to see what characters come back..I mean, some of the characters in the original MVC 2 were very 90's characters. I mean, I don't think I have seen Marrow or Blackheart in a marvel comic in a long long time. I am guessing if the game gets made we will probably see some of the characters that have really exploded in popularity like Deadpool and Luke Cage.

Some details from Kotaku:

- The games full title is "Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds"

- The title will likely feature more than 30 characters to choose from and feature 3-on-3 tag team fighting.

- Hits the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in spring 2011.

- There currently are no plans for an arcade, computer or Wii version of the title.

- At least 100 pieces including remixes of favorites from previous Marvel Vs. Capcom games as well as some new music.

- The trailer hints, according to Kotaku, that Captain America, Super Skrull, Chun-Li, Deadpool, Felicia, Dante or Nero, Spencer or Wesker, Mephisto, Rad Spencer and Doctor Doom are in.

- The game will have a strong storyline.

Turns out that those peices of "concept art" is actually how the characters look with the ingame graphics.

http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/04/500x_mvsc_poster_hulk_fix-1000_01.jpg

You may have seen these images before, but not armed with this knowledge.

Turns out that those six pieces of character art that Capcom provided to sites for Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 show how the characters will look in the game when rendered on Capcom's in-house graphics engine MT Framework, the developer says.

While Capcom tells Kotaku that the characters are in-game models, these static images don't yet include shaders or the dynamic lighting and they are all, of course, works in progress.

Another interesting note, Capcom tells us that the characters seen in the trailer are also in-game models, though with a "cinematic treatment."

So not bullshots, Capcom says. What do you think?

I would imagine people would get pretty pissed if the numbers weren't at least close to MvC2. Especially since you choose three each time.

But then again in MvC2 lots of people played the same characters anyway.

Well this was said

• The Marvel vs. Capcom 3 development team said they will be blowing fans out of the water with the sheer number of characters this game includes on the disc.

If the number is going to "blow us out of the water" it has to be higher than MvC2 otherwise it's just a standard roster number, nothing special.

Then it was said the roster would be 30 characters. Hardly a "blow us out of the water" number. So I thought maybe they meant 30 to each "side". It's higher than MvC2 and it would be impressive having a roster that big in a 3D/2D fighter.

Kalyx triaD

While the trailer hints at the roster line-up, it doesn't provide clues on how the game will play. Besides several recognizable special moves -- Hulk's asphalt projectiles, Morrigan's Izuna Drop, and Ryu's super fireball -- MvC3 is something of a mystery. We do know that the characters are rendered in 3D, though the gameplay is strictly 2D -- in the same direction as Street Fighter 4 and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Even the series' trait, the team battles, remains to be seen. "We're still looking if it'll be 2-versus-2 or 3-versus-3," says Niitsuma. However, he adds that fans will recognize the fighting system: a mix of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. "It'll be definitely be faster than what you saw in TvC, and for the mechanics, we wanted to make it easier for people to get off moves easier than, say, Marvel vs. Capcom 2." Niitsuma's words will likely please MvsC2 seasoned players, who thrive off the adrenaline rush provided by MvsC2's frenetic pacing.

Capcom will be having dev blogs on this game like they did for SSF4. Maybe this time I'll post each blog here?

At last, it begins!

Greetings! This is Niitsuma, and I'm the producer at Capcom for this new title. What's this new title? Well, we're finally able to announce it!

"Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Fate of Two Worlds"!! We've received so many requests from our fans all over the world, saying "You aren't going to do a sequel?" or "If you do it, I want this!", and this time we're finally able to announce this to the fans!

Unfortunately we can't discuss specifics of the game right now, but from here on out we'll be able to reveal information directly to our fans, so I hope that you'll check in frequently to see what we're up to!

Now then, about that pretty trailer...

We'll probably be saying it quite often about this game, but this time around, the character design concept is based around the American Comic Book.

We're making it our goal to bring the Marvel comic books to life to create a game that is undeniably exciting from the get go, so please make sure to check back often to get the latest update on our progress!

Finally, did you notice all of those silhouettes hanging about? I'm guessing those who are well-informed may already know, but how about you poke around and see what you can find? :)

Make sure you check back every now and then to this blog for any updates we may have!

This is Niitsuma, signing off!

I would rather have the big numbers, as I will probably be button mashing this with my friends, and could care less about balance.

Exactly. People who play seriously figure out the balance anyways, and as far as I could ever tell, nobody had any problems with MvC2.

It's going to be an un-balanced clusterfuck.

I'd actually be miffed it wasn't. I've got other fighting games for balanced technical fights, this is an insane mess and that's the natural order of things.

Until of course you're raped by a Magneto chain or Iron Man's infinite or assist traps or Sentinel's bitch-ass. Balance maintains fun, not antagonizes it. People need to get it right.

Yeah, playing with your friends is cool and all... but all it takes is one asshole friend to make you suddenly care about balance.

Oh, what's that? Cable's broke as hell? TIME TO PLAY ME SOME CABLE AMIRITE BOYS

And sometimes this friend happens to be alot of your friends.

After Tatsunoko vs Capcom was surprisingly balanced (the American version, anyhow) though, I've got pretty decent hopes for this. I don't think Capcom's going to go as sloppy as they used to.

Okay yeah I'm basically kinda tired of SRK right now. Jackasses seem to have put me and few others in Capcom's place and are venting their disapproval of SF4, TvC, and MvC3(!) to us. They keep trying to argue for broken elements Capcom itself are shutting down, but apparently we're still the fringe, erroneous few poisoning the forum. It's hilarious, but only for a little while... then it becomes annoying. It is exactly like hearing a creationist debate against logic and reason.

But anyway, some personal speculation on MvC3 so this post isn't a total waste:

- Now that the game is rendered in 3D I wonder what kind of effects we'll see for super moves. TvC and SF4 had cinematic finishers, it's safe to expect this presentation to return. Only better looking than TvC and crazier than SF4.
- Capcom mentioned easier move execution. While I still expect the traditional motion+button method, there's a good chance we'll see an evolution of Capcom's Easy-Auto setting (that they've been using in a few games). I think we'll see two main control settings, one for traditionals and one for casuals. The casuals may have something similar to CvS2's infamous EO control, but perhaps more similar to Blazblue's Drive button, where some manner of execution of still expected. Special and super moves may be nerfed in some form on this casual setting.
- Since there's a story for all this craziness I assume cutscenes and ending scenes will return. If Capcom is willing to drop dollar, these scenes could be real time cutscenes with the characters portrayed by their legacy actors. Capcom's SF and DMC VAs should be easy enough to commission, but I wonder if Marvel's side will feature returning stars from previous work. Steven Blum as Logan? Almost certain. I wonder if VAs from other Marvel games can do work for their characters appearing in this game. It would be cool.
- We have yet to see Capcom actually add content that wasn't on disc, so it would be interesting to see if Capcom would truly add characters in the true definition of downloadable content. Sadly, unlocking characters already in your seems like something Capcom would do (they sold unlock keys for SF4 costumes and RE5 multiplayer before). I'd love to be proved wrong, though.

Um... that's all?

Funky Fly
04-27-2010, 05:15 AM
MvC2 had 52 characters or so. So Drakul's 60 would be cool. Also, hopefully the easier execution is more like BlazBlue's and less like CvSnk2. BlazBlue gave you 4 moves on the right stick, some of which (depending on the character) were hard to pull off due to input or positioning requirement (eg Bang's SRK input throw). CvSNK2 was ridiculous in that every move was mapped to the right stick and some people had 4507895467 moves.

Also Cable jobs to Roll. No bullshit fierce punch blaster shot over and over for her. No sir.

S-Kill says:

We'll be getting into one of the key things that makes Marvel (Vs Capcom) 3 totally different, or you know, a unique experience from Marvel (Vs Capcom) 2... I shouldn't say that it's (Marvel Vs Capcom 3) is totally different. Fans of Marvel (Vs Capcom) 2 are not going to be alienated by (Marvel Vs Capcom) 3.

Yeah, I've played a lot of the game. Right now, there are about 30 characters (in Marvel Vs Capcom 3). I get upset because I keep hearing people say 'Oh, so there's 30 characters in the game?' Well, yes, but they're also going to keep adding characters until we're done with the game... There are 30 characters right now. They're not all done. They're at various stages. Some are pretty far along, some have a long way to go.

We're definitely not evacuating Tatsuonoko [Vs. Capcom]. They're quite different games. You're not going to have everything you liked about Tatsunoko Vs Capcom sucked out and put on another platform.

Dante (Devil May Cry), Felicia (Darkstalkers), Deadpool and Captain America were listed as confirmed characters for Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

• MvC3 is using the Tatsunoko vs. Capcom scheme to be more accessible, but will retain stuff like Hyper Combo cancels, Snapbacks and assists.

• The game will have the alpha, beta and gamma assist types, just like in Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

• MvC3 aims to knock down the wall of complicated controls and open up the field of strategic fighting to all comers. This means fusing the accessible controls of TvC with tried and true MVC2 gameplay.

• The game has simplified launch attacks which are universally performed with one button, the Exchange button. This can also be pressed along with certain directions to slam opponents into the ground, leaving them susceptible to combos. Players can also hit the Exchange button in midair to tag in other team members on the fly. You can also counter exchange moves by guessing the correct exchange move to input at the same time as your opponent.

• Deadpool's teleportation device will comically malfunction if you spam his teleport move. Also, he breaks the fourth wall by beating his opponents with his health bar.

• Chris Redfield uses his weapons from Resident Evil 5, his shotgun and the "shock stick."

• Moves from the previous games seemed to have been retained. Wolverine and Hulks' Supers are shown.

Smaller notes: Dante was apparently kept out of TvC because Capcom was saving him for this. Also, the Wolverine outfit in one of the Game Informer screenshots is from Astonishing X-Men--meaning we're getting alternate outfit designs, not just colors.

Will Marvel vs. Capcom 3 be playable at this year's E3?

Seth (Killian): I'm pushing very hard to make sure people get a chance to play MvC3, whether that be at E3 or otherwise. Part of the issue is that (as has been repeatedly mentioned), there are many non-final aspects about the game. This should be obvious given where it is in the development cycle, but the concern is that if we show something that isn't 100% done, everyone will still treat it like this was the final product rather than a game that's not coming out until 2011.

At any rate, trying to get MvC3 into your hands soon, and as usual, regardless of MvC3, we WILL be getting a bunch of (Capcom-)Unity members into the show :D

What's the top priority for MvC3 character selection? Is it popularity or how well the characters will fit into a fighting game?

Sven: It's a combination of those things.

Sure we have to have some of the fan favorites (e.g. popular characters). Then there are some characters that were selected just because they would have cool abilities that fit the gameplay well (which are often a bit more obscure or at least lesser known).

With as many popular characters as both companies have, inevitably, some people will be disappointed that character X, Y or Z isn't in it, but as Niitsuma-san has said, we're trying to get as many in as we can in the development time we've had.

Will MvC3 use GGPO for its online play?

Seth: Nothing has been decided yet regarding MVC3 online. ♥ GGPO.

How come we haven't heard about more new characters for MvC3 yet? You guys need to hurry up and put out more information, I need to know!

Sven: There's a set schedule for which we'll be showing/announcing new characters that leads all the way up to launch. Totally appreciate the passion though.

What are some of the details concerning your agreement with Marvel? Also, since you guys are working on MvC3, can you release your older Marvel titles too and create more games based on that franchise?

Sven: I negotiated both the MvC3 and MvC2 contracts and I'm really not at liberty to share details of significance in those agreements.

But in the name of setting your expectations I will say, both are separate agreements that were negotiated at different times. In the MvC3 contract's case, it only grants us the rights to create MvC3. It does not grant any rights to release older titles from past agreements.

GamingUnion.net is reporting that Capcom is going to have gameplay footage of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and announce some new characters at this year's E3, which takes place from June 15 - 17.

It's possible that they may announce the same characters that were confirmed already by Game Informer magazine — Dante (Devil May Cry), Felicia (Darkstalkers), Deadpool and Captain America — as these fighters haven't had any official information or screen shots released about them, yet.

There will not be a playable demo of MvC3 at this event. For those of you who cannot attend E3 this year, Seth Killian said that Capcom is going to offer "extensive streaming action," so you should be able to check things out from the comfort of your own home.

My newest blog on SRK:

A lot of people have been making MvC3's Exchange counter system out to be some guessing game with advantage-victim. I explained in a major thread how that will not be the case...

I'll spare you the deep philosophies and just say risk/reward is this: You go for it and succeed, you bank; you go for it and fail, you get punished. It is NOT a case of doing and not doing (remember this). You must be rewarded if you succeed. You must be punished if you fail. Not succeeding isn't punishment enough. Avoiding punishment isn't rewarding enough. It's not just rewarding behavior and then risky behavior; it's both rewarding vs risky. I hope this cleared the concept up for some of you. Now for MvC3's implementation.

Let's start with a simple air combo:

A, B, C, 8E (2/3 success chance)

The risk/reward, as someone already noted, is in fact in your favor. Your enemy as a 1/3 chance to stop this, you have a 2/3 chance of succeeding. The lopsided chance is justified for having his ass in the air to begin with. He should have been more careful. But he has a chance. Now you wanna continue the combo, maybe take it higher with a launcher... or slam him to the wall... maybe a grounder. You have three options, but one of them may be wrong. Your reward is more damage and maybe a Hyper Combo set-up, and you have more reward chance than naught. Your risk, which is minimal, is eating a combo completely contingent or your opponent's ability to capitalize after the fact. For the most part: advantage you. How do you like to end your combos? Launcher? Grounder? Wanna feign a tendency to train your opponent to set up real finish later on?

For the opponent getting owned in the sky, he has:

8/6/2E (1/3 success chance)

Now we're currently not sure what the window of opportunity is (which is very important info), but let's focus on the risk/reward factor. If he does nothing, he eats a combo. And maybe other horrors you could give him. He can't have that, so he needs to make a move or eat damage. Please note; the motivation behind his choice has nothing to do with you. Will he guess? Will he read you? Who knows. Who cares! If his move is wrong he will have to wait for another opportunity to match the E attack, which could come after an unpredictable number of moves or not come at all. That's if his action isn't baited for more damage (which would be a reset, no scaling for him). BUT, did he notice a certain way you end your combos? Do you always ground after three hits? Do you always wall slam when near a wall? His reading you will help him increase chances of netting the reward.

Or maybe he'll guess out of it that time. Boo hoo. Happens in every fighting game, not the end of the world. In higher level play, as with any fighter, there will be less guessing and more reading.

A savvy player could take this very risk/reward mechanic and play the metagame, absolutely outclassing his opponent. It won't look as savage as MvC2's beat downs, but the mental game of using the risk/reward situation for you and against your opponent gives me chills. And it'll exist for every match up, on top of the various moves, attack properties, and attributes of the characters. We're not even talking about assists yet. This is a new game, but noob it is not.

Since we now know you can bait someone into whiffing a move, and if you really wanna get meta about it, you actually have four options in an aerial combo. That's 3/4 success chance! And your opponent? He has to read/guess your move or eat damage! That's 50/50 with a sub-chance of one third! I'm starting to feel sorry for this hypothetical victim.

Notice I'm not being apologetic about the gamble nature of the system, but fighting games are gambles when you peel back enough because nobody is actually psychic. No one is 100% sure of their opponent's next move. This was even showcased inadvertently when a Strategy Corner contributor ate a "random" Ultra for the loss. Rolling the dice is as old of fighting games themselves.

Thanks for reading.

So basically:

"Quit bitching about air combos because it's in favor of the attacker (2/3 chance of continued punishment), while still giving the attackee a fair chance (1/3 chance of a counter). It's not a broken system, it's just a matter of reading the other guy better because fighting games are essentially gambling."

See what I did there? Learn to do that a little more.

Shack: Of the playable characters we've seen so far, there's no filler. Each character is powerful. Is that the goal of the team?

Seth Killian: That was one of the explicit goals. One of the things we got brow-beat on with Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was the Capcom characters weren't considered as strong as the Marvel guys. That's understandable, you've got the Hulk and Storm - who is technically a goddess - versus Ryu, who's just pretty good at karate.

But seriously, we've made a conscious effort to power up the Capcom guys, but in ways that are true to their character. That's the challenge and the team takes that very seriously. Dante is a great example. He's got all of his special moves from Devil May Cry 3, but they are in a fighting game and they totally work. If you're a fan of Dante, you can use his gauntlets, both of his guns, and all of his sword tricks with fire and ice. They are all there.

Shack: What gameplay systems from MvC2 make a return?

Seth Killian: Basically, all the systems from MvC2 are back. Even stuff for the hardcore guys like wave-dashing and triangle jumps - all that stuff is still there. We've got some new mechanics that are slightly more core like the Air Combo button, but there is a problem with the messaging [that could be annoying the hardcore fans].

There are still four attack buttons, one just has a fancy new name. In the air, if you just hit the Air Combo button, it just works like a hard attack. If you pair it with up, towards, or down, you'll tag in a teammate or slam the opponent in that direction.

If the opponent guesses correctly they can counter out of it, but there are some mind games there. One of the things that sucked about Marvel 2 is that if you got blown out of the water quick and were down to your last man, you had almost no chance to come back. We have a new 'X-Factor' ability when you're down to your last guy - if you hit both assist buttons, you'll go into a power-up mode, which will cancel out of whatever you're doing instantly, even in the middle of a hyper combo. You also get a pretty significant damage boost. It's on a timer so you don't have all the time in the world, but if you find an opportunity with that one guy, you have a chance to take out one of their characters.

Shack: Is X-Factor a one-time use ability?

Seth Killian: It is one-time use, yes. There won't be any strategies where you're intentionally going down to one character to get some big boost, but it does help level the playing field for one character. Of course, if you knock your opponent down to one character, they still have that ability as well.

Shack: Is there any downside to using this?

Seth Killian: No, not really. It's just finding a good time to use it. You want to take advantage of it and there's no downside.

Shack: Does it require any meter to use?

Seth Killian: No. Once active, a timer ticks down on your life bar. It's like Makoto's power-up [Super Street Fighter IV], but it doesn't use any hyper meter.

Shack: With assists right now, I had a lot of trouble getting my support characters to jump in. How does it work and is this final?

Seth Killian: So you can hit the assist button in any neutral state, but right now to tag in a character it's back plus the assist button. Right now it's harder to call assists in a defensive posture, but that's probably going to change.

Shack: What about level 3 hyper combos? None have been shown yet, but they will be in the game?

Seth Killian: Yes, some of those are already finished. Some news got out about one of them, Deadpool's - he grabs the life bar and beats the opponent with it, sort of the ultimate fourth-wall breaking move. Those will be in the game, but they are far from finished and we didn't want to show them for just a few characters.

Development schedules being what they are, characters aren't always finished at the same time. Deadpool is probably the most finished character in the game. Dante is getting there.

Shack: Iron Man came back from MvC2 and he plays a lot differently. He's much faster and his Proton Cannon hyper can be angled up. Are changes like this being made across the board?

Seth Killian: Yes, for instance, with Ryu - his Hurricane Kick, depending on which button you use have a different distance and angle. The light hurrican kick will angle down so you can cross people up and it's mostly safe in the air. Iron Man's triangle jumps are unbelievably ridiculous right now. They are faster, I believe, than anything ever was in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The overall pace of the game is up and down, but hopefully people will find a good set of characters that fit their play style.
__________________________________________________________________________

Joystiq: What about Super Street Fighter IV's online tools? Are there any plans to implement its lobby system into Marvel vs Capcom 3 -- custom tournaments, team play, etc?

Niitsuma: The whole online elements of the game are being worked on, even as we speak. Nothing has been finalized on that end, though I can say that Street Fighter (especially Super Street Fighter IV) offers a good model to work with.

One thing is different is that obviously the two games are very different in the way they play -- one thing we have in this game is the 3-on-3 battle. This makes it heavier in terms of data transfer, so we couldn't just transfer the Street Fighter model over to Marvel vs Capcom 3, brick for brick. But we are using it as a reference to decide how we want to finalize it in our game.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 is powered by MT Framework -- it's the first Capcom fighting game built on this engine. How is that working out? What are the advantages of MT Framework?

First of all, I think MT Framework is a really great engine for development, we use it all of the time. For a fighting game, the biggest appeal of it is that you can develop for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at the same time. So we're able to develop for both systems with just one line of production.

And we learned a lot from the development of Street Fighter IV -- where the goal was to increase the quality of the game, while decreasing the time it takes to make it. And MT Framework really allows us that luxury. [Editor's note: Neither Street Fighter IV nor Super Street Fighter IV are built on MT Framework -- Niitsuma is simply referring to Capcom's multiplatform development strategy in general.]

So it's been more or less confirmed that you can play Dante exactly like you did in DMC3. Not 'kinda like', not 'similar to', just about the same mechanics right down to the combo extensions (like Million Stab during Stinger, which btw is still down by pointing toward your enemy and attacking). This is a testament to the mechanics of the DMC series, which were originally likened to fighting game precisions. This is off-the-charts good news to me.

Dante is also top-tier according to E3 and current EVO playtests, which disappointments me because now I'm gonna see a million Dante users and that sort of shit actually deters me from choosing characters in a fighting game. But who am I kidding?

Wow, this game is really suiting up to become something epic isn't it? But while it's visually stunning, I can't say I'm on board with the voice acting they've chosen.

Take for instance Chun-li: she is by far my favorite fighting character, but I have to say I'm not loving the way she sounds. Her voice sounds very similar to her Alpha series incarnation, a time line which portrayed the fighters when they were younger. All I'm saying is that her voice isn't matching her appearance. But hopefully this is a moot complaint since this game is still in it's demo phases.

I'm surprised to not see Spider-Man on the roster yet. I'm sure he's a given, but it's weird that he wasn't one of the games debut characters (I always saw him as a figurehead for the Marvel brand, sort of like how Ryu is for Capcom). Chances are he's among the collection of silhouettes that were flashed at the end of that video. I can already tell who some of them are... Henshin a Go-Go Baby! (bottom right corner).

Character list revealed?

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/news/news-5868-Are-These-Your-38-Marvel-vs--Capcom-3-Characters-.html

When some rumours hit the internet, we advise folks to not only take them with a pinch of salt, but to bury their heads in a bucket of it. This is one of those times.

Thanks to some snooping around in the source code of Capcom's Japanese website by one of PS3Gen's members, it appears that the publisher carelessly left the list of characters buried deep inside. All 38 of them.

While we can't sit here and honestly say it's a legitimate list and that they were indeed hidden in the source code - presumably removed now - we do know that certain publishers have been very careless with this sort of thing in the past.

Do we think they're legit? Well, judging by the fact that there are a few really random picks in there - which Capcom usually likes to do for these titles - and some of them match the silhouette guesses that were flying around the net ever since its announcement, then we're inclined to think, "Sure, why not? They could be."

Plus, we saw Viewtiful Joe in there and our eyes lit up! No Gambit though. Insert sad face. I guess we'll find out in the coming months if this is the leaked line-up is indeed genuine. For now, take a gander at all 38 characters (with franchises in brackets for the Capcom characters) and squirm with excitement just in case:
Marvel

* Captain America
* Deadpool
* Dr Doom
* Elektra
* Emma Frost
* Hulk
* Iron Man
* Juggernaut
* Magneto
* Mr Fantastic
* She Hulk
* Shuma-Gorath
* Spider-Man
* Super Skrull
* Taskmaster
* Thor
* War Machine
* Wolverine
* X-23

Capcom

* Akuma (Street Fighter)
* Albert Wesker (Resident Evil)
* Amaterasu (Okami)
* Arthur (Ghosts 'n Goblins)
* Chun-Li (Street Fighter)
* Chuck (Dead Rising)
* Chris (Resident Evil)
* Dante (Devil May Cry)
* Felicia (Darkstalkers)
* Hsien-Ko (Darkstalkers)
* Mike Haggar (Final Fight)
* Morrigan (Darkstalkers)
* Ryu (Street Fighter)
* Spencer (Bionic Commando)
* Trish (Devil May Cry)
* Tron Bonne (Mega Man Legends)
* Viewtiful Joe (Viewtiful Joe)
* Zero (Mega Man)

If so, im abit disappointed by a lack of Carnage, Venom, or any member of the Fantastic Four. On the other hand, Haggar is finally in a Capcom fighting game.

Mr. Fantastic is a member of the FF and She Hulk is a former member. :wtf:

Haggar getting in hopefully means he's coming to Street Fighter soon. Time for a win/fail list based off the rumoured crew.

Win:

-Taskmaster
-X-23
-Emma Frost
-She Hulk
-Elektra
-Wesker
-Arthur
-Spencer
-Zero

Fail:

-War Machine (clones again? REALLY?)
-Juggernaut (I actually like him in these games, but how about A-Bomb?)
-Shuma-Gorath (just weak sauce. Put in Doctor Voodoo or The Hood FFS)
-Tron Bonne (never liked her. How about a not shit character like just about anyone else Capcom has to offer)?

Not legit. That list was proven inaccurate a while back, no worries.

Emma and Fantastic was confirmed not included in a recent stream interview. Super Skrull represents Fantastic Four and Marvel didn't want Emma in for whatever reason. Shuma is certainly not returning but the rest of the list seems like good bets based on the speculation/dodging whenever the devs were questioned on it. It's more or less an 'educated guess' like what you guys do whenever a new WWE game comes around.

Only reason I can think of for the new DR2 guy and not Frank West was to help promote Dead Rising 2 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Frank West managed to be in Tatsunoko vs Capcom since he already was in a game on the Wii and Capcom probably wanted to use him to help boost the sales of the Dead Rising port that was sluggish. Even then he only appeared in the US and European version of TvC.

If they can have Thor and Hulk in it, I see no reason why Surfer can't be in as well. It's certainly not a power-level issue, as most of the Capcom guys wouldn't scratch the Marvel guys in a fight. Balanced to some degree for a reason.

I mean really, what prayer would Ryu actually have against Thanos or Juggernaut?

That being said... I'm interested to see who all is in it.

I still say X-23 would pretty much be a Wolverine clone. Remember beastial/bone claws Wolvie? Similar move set but faster than regular Wolvie? That's all I see X-23 being, if she ends up being in it.

Still hoping for Taskmaster, one of Marvel's most underrated characters.

It's because Thor and Hulk's fighting style are melee based, where as silver surfer mainly just zips around on his surf board at ridiculous speed, shooting stuff from his hands.

WOuld be great for a 3-d rail shooter, but it would be kinda weird to see him in a fighting game.

True about Surfer, but Storm can just hang back up in the sky far out of reach and Lightning Bolt you into oblivion. Don't get me started on Magneto.

All I'm saying is they already have characters who sit far out of reach and rain down energy-based doom. I don't see Surfer as an issue. They'll adjust him for the format -- a fighting game -- and he should be fine.

That's if he's even actually in it, of course.

Funky Fly
08-01-2010, 04:05 AM
Except that would suck. Surfer is capable of telepathically controlling his board while away from it, using the power cosmic (basically the power of god) and cosmic strength augmentation to (possibly beyond) Hulk levels. Check it. (http://marvel.wikia.com/Norrin_Radd_%28Earth-616%29)

It would be a waste not to make him play a lot more like the giant characters in Tatsunoku vs Capcom (he can only be by himself, but it retardedly strong.

Majunior
08-01-2010, 03:39 PM
Firstly, Power Cosmic is NOT essentially the power of God. It's very, very potent yes... but not THAT potent. (See The Infinity Gauntlet and The Living Tribunal for that level of power.)

That being said... telepathically controlling his board can be represented with moves. So can augmentation (a la Juggernaut's "Power Up!" move). As for going beyond Hulk levels of strength, that's difficult since Hulk has no known limit to his potential strength.

Again, most of these things can be represented by moves, and of course it would be balanced. Otherwise, playing anyone BUT Surfer would be pointless.

While he's not gonna go creating universes any time soon, he can easily create and reshape matter. That's what I was getting at. Numerous people have kicked the surfer's ass. Frankly, he's just a scientist with a crazy power set.

I definitely feel you with the game stuff. I see him as more of a midboss for the sheer fact that he's up there with Hulk and Juggy for strength and Magneto, Doom and Storm for sheer energy projection. Plus he can fly. So it's like when he is in play, he'd be a one man team like the really big characters in TvC.

Taskmaster and Strange would be awesome.

You know this is kinda crazy, but I would like if Penance was in it. I know, I know, crappy character sure, but from a gameplay perspective? We all remember X-Men: CotA right? Wolverine had an actual regeneration move where he regained health bar? Penance should have the inherent ability that his damage output increases for all attacks the lower his health bar is. Depending on moveset, he could make for a very unique play strategy.

Starts as a weak character, but by the time he has 5% of his health left, he's overpowered. Just saying, it would make for interesting strategy...

Although, from a badass character for a fighting game standpoint, I'm thinking Hawkeye or Exiles Blink.

I can't see Kingpin as an interesting character in the game. He certainly isn't in the comics.

I was thinking The Hood would be nice, except based on a lot of what he's done in the comics, I think he'd more or less be a Deadpool clone, and I hate clones. I'd much rather just have 'Pool.

I always though Jamie Madrox would be cool to have in a game. Here's a character who could do all sorts of crazy things. Ranged grapples have always interested me. For every percentage of life he loses, duplicates pop off into the background, to be used in other moves. Like the ranged grapples. Or his super, "Gang Beatdown," where all the duplicates jump in.
