There's enough info coming out of this now and it's going to be detailed at E3 in less than a month, so here it goes.

When you exit the demo of Green Day: Rock Band, you get this logo:

http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/174510-rockband3.jpg

(From http://www.destructoid.com/keyboards-teased-for-rock-band-3-in-green-day-demo-174510.phtml )

I'm a little pumped to see this now. Especially with all the new song oppertunities if it is true.

You don't even need to get it though, I'm more happy that there will be more potential for bands/songs as they tend to avoid the songs with a large keyboard presence, even if the other parts are still good.

Probably get a keyboard when they go down in price as well....

The three mic logo thing will probably confirm harmonies in it like Beatles as well.

Depends on how it works. If they managed to make it like a real keyboard, it would motivate me to actually practice. If it's just another fake instrument, I doubt I'd buy it. Still, it doesn't take anything away, so....

I'm thinking the same. An actual keyboard (even if it's only a two octave one or something) would make the keyboard a day one purchase.

Well there's been a lot of talk of more authentic displays of music so... hopefully 2 octaves?

Agreed. My only concern is with the viability of an OSD for keyboards. Drums are fine, but adding one more note in Rock Rebellion helped to make things terrible (though admittedly, that was only one flaw in the game). They'll have to start limiting number of instruments as it is, and even a one octave display could get cramped fast. Though admittedly, a piano roll like the vocal track could work.

Guys. Let's be real. Obviously it's going to be keytar.

Given that Harmonix already teased (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/25/keyboards-teased-for-rock-band-3-in-green-day-demo/) the inclusion of a new instrument in Rock Band 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-3) -- the keyboard -- we almost feel like we've been taken for a ride. That is, if today's report from Ars Technica's mole (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/05/exclusive-rock-band-3-brings-keytar-new-pro-mode.ars) on the game is correct and the keyboard is actually a keytar. "What?!" you cry. Much like Frankie, we must say, "Relax!" because, well, we're totally on board with the concept. Just think about the possibilities (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjQSF1bFMsk)!

The Ars report also alleges the addition of a "Pro" mode "that will require proper technique, and may lead to actual skills on guitar and bass." Perhaps that mode will have some tie to the peripherals, which will all be assembled by Mad Catz, apparently, (as hinted at (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/23/mad-catz-now-principal-peripherals-partner-for-rock-band-franc/) earlier this year); meaning EA would only handle the distribution of game discs.

Though Ars' mole has been accurate with rumors in the past, without confirmation from MTV Games, Harmonix, EA, or Mad Catz (yes, we tried -- only MTV Games responded, saying, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation"), this report is still, unfortunately, unconfirmed.

Wow, I wasn't serious when I said it's a keytar. :-\

Even pro-mode guitar/drums sounds incredible. Fully functioning 6 string Fender Squier Strat guitar that knows where your fingers are with no buttons?

one is a full-sized, fully functional six-string Squier Stratocaster from Fender. "It can tell where your fingers are based on technology in the neck and the bridge of the guitar. No buttons," Drake says. "While you're playing it, it feels exactly like playing a real guitar," because that's what you're doingThe other pro-guitar is from Mad Katz and sounds like a good "Teach me guitar" way of playing:

The other is a Fender Mustang Pro controller from accessory maker Mad Catz with a field of buttons in each fret. As your fingers compress the smaller non-colored buttons on that guitar's neck, your finger positions are represented in the game's display. "You can go from plucking single notes to power chords and bar chords, we have crazy stuff like tapping and slides," Dubrofsky says. "If you ever had any aspirations of connecting with the music in a deeper way ... you are really going to like Rock Band 3."And drums with 3 cymbals as well as the 4 drum pads. Kinda hoped for a hi-hat pedal, but this is cool too.

Also: For drums, three new cymbals are added to the standard four drum pads, and you are forced to play the correct cymbal at the right time. "It really immerses you more. You feel more like a drummerHere's hoping for a pro bass.

And for that easier to use menu system, sounds good for those of us with large libraries:

Revamped song-filtering system. With the Rock Band library expected to grow to about 2,000 songs by year's end, it has grown too big for simply scrolling. With the new system, "you can say, 'only show me songs in Rock Band 3' or 'only songs under three minutes' or 'Eighties metal songs from my (downloadable) collection,' " Teasdale says. "It's a really cool way to take your full library down to a manageable list of songs."

Designed for use exclusively with Rock Band 3, the MIDI PRO-Adapter allows musicians to use their real MIDI keyboards or MIDI drum sets to play Rock Band 3. Plugging directly into the console via USB, the MIDI PRO-Adapter works as an interface between the console and MIDI instrument, converting the MIDI messages into console controller data which the game translates into on screen action. The MIDI PRO-Adapter features a velocity sensitive adjustment for MIDI drums designed to reduce cross-talk during play. A full D-Pad and standard gaming controller buttons are located on the PRO-Adapter to deliver seamless console integration and navigation of the game menus. Ships with a removable clip, allowing MIDI PRO-Adapter to be attached to a belt, or rest on a table top or similar flat surface.

Joystiq had an interview with one of the Harmonix guys. The main interesting point that wasn't already known is this one:

Older songs that had keyboards -- Freezepop's "Brain Power," for example -- are those being revamped for the keyboard?

We're sort of thinking through the legacy songs now in terms of how we support them in Rock Band 3. We know that all DLC and most of the disc songs will be able to be imported into the RB3 library. But in terms of how we augment tracks for Pro and also for keyboards, expect information forthcoming about that stuff. It's complicated.

Sounds like it will be added for some tracks but not all.

Except Powergig's been known for a while, so it's not like it just dropped off the turnip truck.

Still, this is something I doubt Harmonix just slapped together over a couple of months, but this isn't exactly new.

Definatly. There is a mix of people who are saying either "yay" or "meh". They've just got to hope that the majority of the "yay" people have the cash for this thing.

There was nothing else they could do in my eyes though, unless they were just going to stale it up GH style.

Maybe so, but I don't think its a completely unrealistic view either. Without convincing consumers to buy more peripherals (mostly to upgrade their old ones), the music game genre probably won't survive much longer. I know I'm still playing with two GH3 guitars, a RB1 drumset, and a headset for a microphone until I feel like its worth upgrading.

And as for how the MIDI box will work, I don't think its actually officially announced. Gerstmann mentioned in his article that the keytar centers on middle C, so I would presume that all connected keyboards would do the same.

Why is the genre contingent on sales of peripherals? DLC's an awesome model for them and expansion of gameplay modes is still possible. Not to mention there's a reason Harmonix has been pushing away from even making the instruments.

Boomer
06-11-2010, 08:17 PM
Just for you, KK.

I'm sure they make a whole hell of a lot more selling us plastic instruments than DLC. Most people probably don't buy more than a few songs, if any.

Which is still a lot of money on DLC. Don't get me wrong. But the margin from profit from instruments has to be higher, especially at the price they sell them at.

Boomer
06-11-2010, 08:59 PM
And admittedly, I could be wrong about those profits. But its obvious that overall sales figures in the genre haven't been up to snuff recently, and the DLC model isn't going to sustain the continued financial success of any game at this point. Rock Band has probably generated the best sales figures for DLC anyway, and I'm not sure that bringing out a disc-only game with some new gameplay modes and releasing more DLC is going to make the difference to change the minds of consumers.

A press release from Mad Catz (http://joystiq.com/tag/mad-catz) has revealed pricing on several of the new Rock Band 3 (http://joystiq.com/tag/rock-band-3) peripherals (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/11/your-new-rock-band-3-instruments-revealed/) -- and also revealed an interesting gameplay quirk about the highest-profile new instrument, the keyboard. The keyboard ($79.99 by itself, $129.99 with a copy of the game) can be used not just to play piano or keyboard tracks, but can also be used to play lead guitar or bass. That adds even more variation to Rock Band 3!

The Fender Mustang Pro-Guitar Controller (the one with all the buttons, not the real electric guitar) will retail for $149.99, which means that the Squier Stratocaster is likely to be ... pretty expensive. The Pro Cymbals Expansion Kit, which adds three newly-designed cymbals to the existing drum kit, will be $39.99, as will the MIDI Pro-Adapter for connecting any MIDI keyboard or drum set to your game console. In addition, Mad Catz will announce revised versions of the existing Rock Band instruments soon. Essentially, not only will Rock Band 3 have more options than ever, it'll also have more ways for you to spend a lot of money.

Boomer
06-12-2010, 10:12 AM
Like I said, still a lot of money. but just because they've made a billion dollars doesn't mean they haven't spent a whole lot more on ridiculous amounts of instrument bundles people didn't want, or royalties for all the music they use.

This is probably the best article I've seen on the situation:

Which is still a lot of money on DLC. Don't get me wrong. But the margin from profit from instruments has to be higher, especially at the price they sell them at.
Except they weren't making much money on the hardware to begin with. I know the common logic is to assume that since it costs so much, it must be profitable, but that rarely plays out.

As far as sales slowing, with the lack of a new main platform is likely to blame. Rock Band 2 specifically was down compared to the newest Guitar Hero, and while expansions weren't up to snuff on the GH side, they are expansions and nothing more.

Meanwhile, despite all that, DLC is still going strong by all accounts, even if the title has slowed dramatically. Without new innovations, game modes, etc. even announced.

The a la carte nature of the DLC makes it appealing. Platform expansions will continue to make it so. The new instruments themselves likely won't be sold for major profit. The most stripped down 25 key MIDI keyboard runs for more than the keyboard for the game by far. Even if you strip out all the features for a controller and the Xbox interface only, I doubt they're doing much better than breaking even.

Maybe with the other instruments, but considering the costs versus features, I don't know how anyone could reasonably assume so.

Like I said, still a lot of money. but just because they've made a billion dollars doesn't mean they haven't spent a whole lot more on ridiculous amounts of instrument bundles people didn't want, or royalties for all the music they use.

This is probably the best article I've seen on the situation:

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/27206/Viacom_Profits_Up_But_Sales_Down_As_Rock_Band_Weakens.php
Ongoing sales of downloadable content and song packs for music games continue to sustain the genre, too, DeGooyer has argued. Dauman says digital revenue streams will continue to be an important part of the company's business models.

God Damn, even your counterargument supports me!

I was well aware of that comment when I posted it, and will admit that Rock Band sustains now mainly on DLC and software sales. I said I could be wrong about the profits, and I was. Originally, however, Rock Band made a good portion of their profits on peripheral and software sales. And its obvious they are still trying to see if they can sell these stupid plastic instruments to us. I'll be interested to see how much they scale back on the amount of bundles they ship with the original shipment of RB3.

And its pretty interesting that Rock Band still hasn't made Viacom money.

Rock Band 3 Squier Stratocaster plays both real and virtual guitar... at the same time (video) (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/16/rock-band-3-squier-stratocaster-plays-both-real-and-virtual-guit/)

As unfair as it is, what initially gave us hesitation about Mad Catz and Squier's Stratocaster Pro guitar controller (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/11/rock-band-3s-gear-priced-keytar-and-pro-guitar-sport-midi-out/) was that, well, it's Fender's second-tier brand. Despite these prejudices from our youth, Harmonix pretty much sold us on it with one pretty badass trick: the ability to simultaneously play Rock Band 3 (http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/11/rock-band-3-gets-pro-mode-real-guitar-hybrid-controller-and-k/) on Pro Expert and rock the same tune through an amplifier. Bonus: in the presentation we saw, extra notes and added fills didn't seem to affect score. So, that just about turns the uncanny valley of plastic peripherals on its head. Just make sure you crank your TV's sound system to 11 to not be drowned out from what's likely an even worse screw-up sound. See for yourself in the video after the break (caution: a few naughty words contained within).

With all these instruments and how authentic they are, GH's studio mode would be better served in this game. Nice tracks have been made with that system so I'd love to be able to mess around with these instruments in a similar music studio mode. At best we'll probably get a free play, though (not complaining).

Kalyx triaD
07-19-2010, 10:29 PM
October 26, that's the day you should take off from work if you want to rock out in your pajamas (or underwear) while playing Rock Band 3 all day long. Harmonix and MTV Games have announced the late-October date as the day the game will hit shelves for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Nintendo DS.

In addition, they've confirmed a whole slew of pre-order details. Reserve at GameStop get three free song downloads, as previously reported ("Burning Down The House" by Talking Heads; "My Own Summer" by Deftones; and "Blue Monday" by New Order). Pre-order from Amazon, get access to an exclusive in-game guitar. Hit up Walmart.com for your pre-order, get a $10 eGift card.

So there you have it. It's likely that the three songs will hit the Rock Band Music Store at some point, and will run you about $1.99 a piece. The $10 gift card you can use to buy cat food or something, and the in-game guitar might be a hot commodity as I can't think of any other way Harmonix and MTV would make that available.

Kane Knight
07-20-2010, 09:32 AM
Is it really that hard to cite your sources?

Also, how retarded does the guy have to be to not think of any other way HMX and MTV would release in-game additional content? I mean, it's not like they don't already have a music store....So...

A video coming out of Germany's Gamescom (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gamescom-2010) convention yesterday may have accidentally revealed a whole mess of unannounced tracks for upcoming rhythm/music title Rock Band 3 (http://www.joystiq.com/game/rock-band-3). During an interview shot by YouTube user GottGamesShow (http://www.youtube.com/user/GottGameShows) (since taken down), an RB3 rep could be seen scrolling through the entire setlist for the game, apparently revealing tracks from John Lennon's "Imagine" to Devo's "Whip It."

RockBandAide (http://rockbandaide.com/7488/huge-rock-band-3-setlist-leak/) grabbed the whole list before the video went down, which we've dropped for you after the break. And though we've reached out to Harmonix and MTV Games for confirmation, we'd like to point out that, for now, the songs could potentially be future Rock Band Network tracks or simply placeholder. That said, we're hoping they're not -- we're pretty psyched about the two songs we already mentioned, and frankly, it's all about James Brown.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

The Bronx – False Alarm
Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird
Beach Boys – Good Vibrations (Live)
Tegan and Sara – The Con
Riverboat Gamblers – Don't Bury Me... I'm Still Not Dead
The Police – Don't Stand So Close to Me
Steve Miller Band – Fly Like an Eagle
Blondie – Heart of Glass
The Who – I Can See For Miles
James Brown – I Got You (I Feel Good)
Ramones – I Wanna Be Sedated
John Lennon – Imagine
Big Country – In a Big Country
Primus – Jerry Was a Race Car Driver
Echo and the Bunnymen – Killing Moon
Dover – King George
Raveonettes – Last Dance
The Sounds – Living in America
Phish – Llama
Faith No More – Midlife Crisis
Paramore – Misery Business
Queens of the Stone Age – No One Knows
At the Drive-In – One Armed Scissor
The Muffs – Outer Space
Golden Earring – Radar Love
Amy Winehouse – Rehab
Elton John – Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)
Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water
The Smiths – Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before
Hypernova – Viva La Resistance
Pretty Girls Make Graves – Something Bigger, Something Brighter
Swingin' Utters – This Bastard's Life

Hey gang,

Sorry for not posting this response sooner, but nearly the entire Community / PR team is showing off RB3 and Dance Central at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany.

So in the last day or two there's been a lot of speculation about a supposedly "leaked" Rock Band 3 set list. As with all rumors, it's all worth taking with a grain of salt, and I think for the most part you guys in the community know not to believe anything until you see it officially confirmed by us.

Here is our video response, the OFFICIAL reaction, to this "leak" that surfaced the other day. Please check it out and let us know what you think.

To help stem the continued flow of misinformation please spread the news by cross posting the above link to Twitter and Facebook. We're just a few fans away from hitting 500,000 followers on Facebook, at which point we'll release an exclusive RB3 trailer. Thanks in advance for helping to spread CORRECT info about Rock Band 3.

Smoke on the Water and No One Knows and I Wanna Be Sedated on GH1

Some of these songs have already been DLC or early GH songs. Still, it works. Lots of songs I like there.

Beat you to it. But it's a good thing because I doubt too many people gave a shit about GH Smash Hits, so you can play the old songs on other instruments, plus some of this shit is perfect for Keyboard.

DeGooyer: Right now, a typical stand-alone song for us is a buck ninety-nine. If you wanted to buy Pro Mode for guitar on top of that dollar ninety-nine, it would cost a buck. So it's not going to be five bucks or anything. We think it's a really fair price. The alternative would be of course to include it (in the regular download) and up the price for everybody, which I don't think is really fair.

I should note that not all tracks will have pro guitar mode. (Many bands') guitar parts wouldn't rise to the level that they would need to have pro mode authoring associated with them.

So, 3 bucks per song if you want Pro Guitar.

IGN:

So who was announced as first week DLC for Rock Band 3?

When the game releases in North America on October 26th (and October 29th for the rest of the world), Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii owners will be able to download music from The Doors. Included in the DLC will be 12 tracks, including three that use Pro Mode for bass and guitar.

People who purchase Rock Band 3 in the first week and play online will also get free access to the three Doors tracks that feature Pro Mode. The free tracks will be "Light My Fire," "Riders in the Storm," and "Touch me."

Here's a full breakdown from the press release about which songs will be available, and whether or not they're free:

"Light My Fire" (Free from Oct. 26 - Nov. 1, features Pro Guitar and Pro Bass)
"Riders on the Storm" (Free from Oct. 26 - Nov. 1, features Pro Guitar and Pro Bass)
"Touch Me" (Free from Oct. 26 - Nov. 1, features Pro Guitar and Pro Bass)
"Hello, I Love You"
"L.A. Woman"
"Love Her Madly"
"Love Me Two Times"
"Peace Frog"
"People Are Strange"
"Roadhouse Blues"
"Soul Kitchen"
"The Crystal Ship"

Just remember: to get the free songs you have to play the game online in the first week. As of November 2nd the only way to get any of the songs, including the free ones, will be to buy a 12 song bundle or purchase each track individually.

Hey Hasney. Since you have been playing this, tell us about Career mode.

#BROKEN Hasney
10-17-2010, 12:42 PM
It's very goal orientated. Like "complete these warmup songs for bonus fans" bu the main part is going from place to place, starting on the subway and playing 2-3 songs from a choice of 3 setlists at 3-5 venues and your performance gets you more fans to get up the ranks.

As well as earning stars in these songs, you can also earn spades by doing certain things like have a certain streak or deploying overdrive a number of times.

Theres also little cutscenes showing you arriving, setting up or fans queuing outside. It's pretty awesome.

Apparently there's going to be a Billy Joel pack as well. another dozen songs to add to my library.

One more new project has Joel venturing into virtual competition. A dozen of his hits will be downloadable for the video game Rock Band 3, out Tuesday. "I've never allowed my music to be used in a game before," but an Entertainment Weekly review of NBC's The Office changed his mind.

Alluding to an episode in which characters mention a Rock Band featuring Billy Joel, "the critic wrote something like, 'God forbid that ever should happen.' So I called my people and said, 'Get me (on) that Rock Band game.' Then I wrote the critic, saying that every time I get a check, I'll give him a little nod."

Nov. 9 will bring another reminder of Joel's selling power with the release of The Hits, a 19-track compilation acknowledging next year's 40th anniversary of his debut solo album, Cold Spring Harbor. Included is Only the Good Die Young, recently covered on Fox's Glee.

8.5 from IGN. RB2 had a 9.0 I think?

Yeah, a 9. Some of IGN's criticism comes from Pro Guitar being "Dumb" and this either being a new experience or just a track pack.

Everyone else seems to love it, guitar included. Silly IGN.

WHAT?! Lame.

My shopto Pre-Order still says it's out in 3 days.

Bugger, as I have a halloween party on Sat, and this was the so-called "main event"

They might be fulfilling pre-orders and not have enough stock for general release, so keep your eye on it.

I think they meant the mode. They said something about how at that point you should get a real guitar instead if a plastic one, etc. etc. It's the same stupid "You're not a real musician" argument, only now that there's a pro option, they're bitching about how there shouldn't be or something.

Shrodinger's argument, I guess. Until observed, it's both good and bad.

Amazon lists it as either the 16th or the 26th in the States, too.

No release date on the Squier, either.

I didn't know the Mustang could operate as a MIDI controller.

Yeah, the MIDI thing is what convinced memto drop the cash on it, considering the Squier that I really wanted is likely to be much more expensive.

What is the deal with that midi device that allowed you to plug in a real keyboard? Is that out? I play piano, and I'm not going to get the keyboard controller when I have a real keyboard I could use.

Got it. I'm just thinking of getting the ION drums so I can try pro drums mode. Not a fan of keyboard and I don't really want to learn real guitar.
