Fight Night Round 3 set the gaming world ablaze with its gorgeous E3 demo back in 2005. Now EA Sports is returning with the fifth iteration in the sports franchise, dubbed Fight Night Champion coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. And, just in case you're wondering, this is not an expansion to Fight Night Round 4. Fight Night Champion will be its own standalone disc when it launches at retailers. When that will be in 2011 is anyone's guess.
The developers at EA Canada in Vancouver are touting a new single-player mode as the biggest innovation in the game, saying, "Fight Night Champion will break the mold of what is expected in a single-player sports game. Players will be introduced to an entirely new way to step between the ropes and experience the drama, emotion, excitement and tragedy of world championship boxing."

Goodnight, Winky. Hello new level of brutality.
Brian Hayes, Gameplay Producer on Fight Night Champion said, "It's something people won't expect from an EA Sports game" about the game's big new mode. He quickly followed that remark with "Our lips are sealed for the time-being about that" for fear of the wrath of the EA Sports PR representative.
He did tell us that the game will be "the full meal deal with desert and a toy. The whole enchilada. All that and a bag…" when asked if Champion was being treated as an expansion pack or a full retail release. It would stand to reason that the price tag would follow suit, but don't quote us on that.
There will be between 60 and 65 boxers on the roster for the final product and users will implement the new "Full Spectrum Punch Control" to move the combatants around the ring and throw some of the most devastating punches ever seen in a Fight Night game. At least that's the impression I get from looking at that bloody Manny Pacquaio screenshot.

Manny has seen better days.
EA Sports touts the new control method as delivering both "the most realistic punching system ever seen" while still allowing Champion to be "the most user-friendly title in the franchise's history." Interpret that however you like, but you can bet that there will be an option for players to use face buttons and face buttons alone to throw punches.
We weren't able to glean any other juicy tidbits of gameplay details other than the game will include new online features to go along with the headlining single-player innovation and control scheme. Being a huge Fight Night fan myself (and an even bigger cheerleader for solo gameplay when compared to taking the game online), I'm certainly excited to see the sort of new career experience Fight Night Champion is going to provide.
For more information on the Fight Night series, be sure to check out our reviews for Fight Night Round 4 and Fight Night Round 3. We'll have more details on Fight Night Champion later this year. For now, you'll just have to enjoy the pair of screenshots above. Expect to see the game drop onto shelves sometime next year on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Fight Night Champion will break the mold of what is expected in a single-player sports game. Players will be introduced to an entirely new way to step between the ropes and experience the drama, emotion, excitement and tragedy of world championship boxing.
Featuring a refined physics-based animation system that incorporates improved locomotion, punching and stamina mechanics, Fight Night Champion will enable users to move, attack and dodge with the speed and power of the best champions, contenders and pretenders in the world of boxing. In addition, an all-new control scheme, dubbed Full Spectrum Punch Control, will deliver the most realistic punching system ever seen in a simulation fighting game, while still delivering an accessible experience that will make Fight Night Champion the most user-friendly title in the franchise’s history.
Fight Night Champion will set a new standard for visual presentation with the most realistic boxer-likeness to date, fluid animations and damage that truly conveys the brutality of the sport of boxing.
Note: We inadvertently included the phrase “Let’s get ready to rumble” in one press release about Fight Night Champion. EA and Fight Night Champion are not associated or affiliated with, or sponsored or endorsed by, Michael Buffer or Ready to Rumble LLC.

Nah, gonna get it too.
The roster looks shit though, theres only like 5 new boxers added. David Haye is the only notable one.
Suppose it doesnt really matter though cuz the fake downloadable ones looked realistic enough.

Hate the new controls but that's only because I'm so used to the old ones. I'll get used to them though

Anyone have it yet? I have not gotten yet, because I am curious the longevity of play? Is it worth the 60 bucks? Anyone have it yet?
Woke up today to find the missus had bought me this back from town, wasn't planning on getting it for a few months. Not played it yet and probably won't for another few hours. Anybody here 'got into it' yet?

had a 12 round war with Haye v Wlad Klitschko earlier.
Sick game, brahs.

Definitely getting this for some online fucking punching. I'm going to create a boxer who can't do anything except throw devastating right hooks and body shots.

My first fight was exactly the same only after being ahead on points, I got one punch KO'd in the 9th :( Brutalized Winky Wright with Manny for 12 rounds though, love the way damage looks now.

If the online play is like the last few, it'll be full of plebs spamming body shots/generally fighting too much like idiots that win or lose it all tends to be quite unfulfilling :-\

Rumored DLC package for Fight Night Champion to be confirmed tomorrow by EA.
Its expected the package will include Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Floyd Patterson, and Jack Johnson for extra boxers and Cowboys Stadium as a new ring stadium.

There's been a vid of it knocking around for a while but people weren't sure if it was legit or shopped/fake. Guess not.

Getting rid of this, hopefully for a refund but I doubt it, probably wind up trading. Game is flat out broken. Incorporating any amount of CAB's into Legacy mode and it becomes completely unstable, constantly freezes etc as well as a bunch of other daft little niggles that can suck the fun out of it. My current save is unusable now, finished Champion mode a long time ago and I don't play online so fuck it, getting rid.

Rented it, Beat it, Returned it, Glad I didn't purchase. And seriously it felt that quick too.
The movement is pretty shit and stiff.
Nice graphics as always tho, just wish they put more relevant guys on the roster. Nobody wants to play as Manfredo Jr.
One of the first guys I played as was Manfredo :o But that's only because I was a mark for him back on The Contender. Got a full refund despite playing the shit out of it for 2 weeks because the freezing 'issues' are well known for anybody that might want to do the same for whatever reason.

I said this in one of the other threads:
Big props to EA for finally releasing a Fight Night game that's held my interest exclusively for two weeks and has yet to become insanely easy.
I'll stand by that statement, but a week later, my interest has drained substantially, and while it's still not insanely easy, I've gotten skilled enough where it's become somewhat redundant.
CSL's "fears" about online play are absolutely dead-on, too. Button-mashing bastards. Some of my friends have grabbed it up; I try to just play against them.

So, even though I'm only 3 matches into it, I can already tell I cannot stand this game.
First, the controls. I loved FNR4 and still play it every once and a while. I think the control scheme in that game was perfect. It seems like EA can't get a proper control scheme for any of the FNR games and they tweak it a little bit in the sequel only to have people complain about how the last one was great and didn't need tweaking. That's what happened for me here. I was so used to the FNR4 controls that I'm going to piss and moan until my brain eventually figures out these new ones.
And it seems like they're trying to cater to every fan of the series out there but in the process can't establish their own style. There are like 9 different button configurations. (None of them being the one I want, of course.) If you're going to stick with something, then stick with it.
So ok, they took out the dramatic upswings and quarter circles and half rotations and what have you. I got used to and loved that control scheme, but fine. I'll deal with it. So now all punches are a simple flick of the joystick (or a button press). One simple flick. I'm fine with that. After all, it makes the game easier, more accessible to beginners and makes it easier to land a combo. In theory. But it doesn't work because the gameplay is so slow.
The boxers themselves move slow. The new camera angle is nice and "swoopy", but also very slow. In later rounds, when boxers have less stamina and are supposed to move slow, they move slower than what's supposed to feel "slow". If you're going to improve the control scheme to make it more streamlined, why not also improve the responses of those inputs? Sometimes I have an incredibly difficult time landing a simple 3 punch combo. Not even "landing" it, just simply throwing those punches.
It's hard to tell what EA is going for here. An action packed fighter or an appropriate boxing sim? They take away the health bars (on default. You can add them under settings), take out the corner game, take out the block meter, added a new punch, took out the ability to push, added the ability to punch while blocking, and a lot of tweaks. And I honestly don't know how to categorize these tweaks. If they're going for "sim" by taking out the block meter then they completely negated that by being able to punch while blocking.
AND AUTO BLOCK ITSELF. I almost skipped right over that. The game is going to block for you? That's half of boxing right there is knowing how to block. You're telling me all I have to do now is hold RT and not worry about if he's going high or low? And I can just keep coming at him with jabs? And the game won't mind? Fucking sweet.
And then the overall lack of additional anything. One new venue worth giving a crap about. A whole bunch of "new" fighters who were 100 times better in FNR4's create system. An improved television presentation but nowhere near where it needs to be.
Disappointing. Going to start that campaign mode tonight probably. Hopefully that will be good and I can wrap my brain around the new control scheme when I get into it. Only to have EA completely switch it around on me the next game. Can't wait.

And get these fucking campaign boxers off my boxer select screen. Who gives two shits about them

Yeah, Champion Mode was "pretty neat". The story was fun with stereotypical boxing story characters, but still fun to play. Although it seemed more like they just threw in all their gimmicks in one mode and made you play through all of them. One match is "don't hit with your right" then the next match is "don't the body" and then the next is "handicap match, don't get hurt too bad in the first". But I guess you can only make a boxing campaign so compelling until you have to rely on those gimmicks to stay interested in it. I kind of wish that they would either integrate this into Legacy Mode or maybe even release new Champion Modes as DLC every 4 months or so. Except rely less on the gimmicks and more on a properly written and interesting story.
Got used to the controls. I think. Even got used to auto-blocking, but I still don't like it. And I still think the speed is a bit wonky at times too.
I'm hoping they improve the presentation in the next one. Properly sync up the play-by-play announcers' calls when he throws it to the ring announcer for a decision. And then properly sync up the ring announcer, ref, boxer, and crowd reactions after that. I really loved the ESPN style cut-in during Champion Mode and I don't see why a similar introduction can't be put into Fight Now mode. Also add more player intro animations, easier way to rip music for player intros, and just more animations in general. I guess mocapping actual licensed boxers isn't an option?
They also need to add more depth to the fighters themselves. It still feels like I'm playing cookie-cutter presets of create-a-boxers instead of unique styles. How they go about fixing this, I'm not sure.
I dunno. Good game and everything, they just need to add a shit ton of things in the next one. New venues definitely. And the ability to select alt attires at the boxer select screen. Little things really.
