Nintendo revealed a special promotion for the Wii U, specifically for the Deluxe Set bundle ($399).

Anyone who purchases the $399 Wii U Deluxe Set becomes part of a two-year (November 18, 2012 through December 31, 2014) promotion that will give consumers money back for making digital purchases. For every 500 points earned through purchases, you get $5 back. Pick up New Super Mario Bros. U for $59.99, for example, and you’ll have earned 599 points, enough to get $5 back.

You will not be able to participate with a vanilla Wii U Basic Set, nor will you accrue points with purchases made on the 3DS eShop.

Nintendo also revealed because of the strong support by 3rd parties for the Wii U launch window, they've been pushing back several of their own games in order to keep a constant stream of games lasting for all of 2013. They didn't want a repeat of the 3DS where there was a gap of a few months when almost nothing big was released.

Wii U's browser being made by the same company who worked on the PS3, Vita, and 3DS browser (Netfront) and while it runs HTML 5 (faster than IE 10 can), it won't support Flash at launch.

In a Japanese Nintendo Direct conference, Iwata-san sat down to talk at length about the online functionality for Wii U. Details of note include the fact that the Wii U will allow up to 12 unique profiles per console. Each profile will be able to access any downloaded eShop content on the console (similar to PS3). The Nintendo Network profile will be associated to an ID number and users can interact through the Miiverse so long as you have either the number or profile name.

Now when you boot up a Wii U, you’re immediately in the Miiverse. Profiles help manage game saves, settings, bookmarks from the Internet browser, and your gameplay history. It resembles the current 3DS setup, but there is no word if the 3DS will actually use the profile model. You may also be able access the Nintendo Network via PC or smartphone using your profile.

Apparently SD cards can't be used to store Wii U downloads unlike with the Wii although it hasn't been completely confirmed by Nintendo and the source is a translation of a recent Q&A.

During an Q&A interview with Nintendo of Japan, details emerged about using external devices for storage purpose and while the translation could be off it detailed this.

* Downloaded software can go to internal memory or external USB device. SD Card not supported

* Your downloaded content cannot be transfered to another Wii U

* You can move content to USB drive but not copy

According to early reviews, Tecmo managed to really improve Ninja Gaiden 3 for the Wii U version but the game itself is still average overall.

The recent Nintendo Direct episode was released mostly detailing how the storage works on the system. Roughly 3-4 GB are used up for system purposes while the system can support as a maximum of 2 TB per USB port although only 1 external drive can be used at launch.

Nintendo confirmed SD cards can't be used to store Wii U stuff and instead are meant to store Wii related data and help with the transfer process.

According to Destructoid, the newly designed eShop is a lot more accessible and user friendly than the current Xbox Marketplace and redesigned PS Store. Also Nintendo was correct when they said launch day of the Wii U eShop would have retail games since a lot of Wii U games also have their retail versions already available (ex. ZombiU, Assassin's Creed 3, New Super Mario Bros U).

Just seen something damn frustrating. I can transfer all my bought VC games from my Wii to my Wii U fine from my hacked console as the tool just takes the download authorisations and downloads them on the Wii U. However, none of the Wii U controllers support Wii mode. I don't own a classic controller or anything as I use Gamecube pads for the VC games.

What this means is to play everything I own, I need a Gamepad Tablet (only controller in the box), Wii Motion Plus, Nunchuck, Classic Controller and maybe even a Wii U Pro controller... Now that's overkill.

Your situation is definitely an awesome benefit, for sure :y:

I just wish Nintendo would "get with it". I mean, I know Wii sold a ton of consoles the last "generation", but it was soooooooooooooooo gimmicky that outside of their household titles (Mario, DK, Metroid, Zelda, etc.) games were CRAP.

Now they have another gimmick system, while pretty neat at first glance, I think will lose it's touch in less than a year. They should just make an awesome handheld portable device, I'm NOT looking at you 3DS.

I went to Amazon and the FAQ said to contact the manufacturer, so that's what I did.

The Wii U takes a while to set up. I can't seem to get it to connect to the internet, even though the Wii has no problem with it wirelessly. Also not sure how to stop "overscanning", I think it's called when the tv cuts off the end of the image. It's just the edge, but it still cuts off half of the button in the bottom right of the main menu screen.

#BROKEN Hasney
11-30-2012, 09:22 AM

My old 40" Smasung overscans everything through HDMI and it's a pain in the arse. You can't fix it via TV settings.

360 and PS3 can correct this via settings although it wasn't present in the 360 at launch (which isn't surprising, it doesn't seem to be an issue via component and HDMI wasn't available at launch).

Drakul
11-30-2012, 10:41 AM
It's an issue for me with the Wii U and the 360. Wii U is much worse, though. It's down to me using an old school tv. If I hadn't gotten a Wii U, I could have caught up with everyone else and gotten an HDTV. Wishing I had.

Feeling let down by the Wii U right now, to be honest. It wont detect a wi-fi connection, even though there is one, the overscan is bad enough that, playing Balloon Fight Breeze, I can actually fly right off the screen, my pad speaker broke and Nintendoland is actually pretty crappy in general. Using the stylus for the Yoshi game, it feels weird, as if I'm scratching the screen too hard, when I'm really not putting much force on the screen at all. Holding the pad like an iPad and using it as a steering wheel feels awkward.
I'm also finding it a bit hard to go between the TV and the gamepad. I instinctively want to look at the pad the entire time because that's where the controls are and my brain tells me "Screen and controls in your hand = handheld = look at that screen the entire time."

Massive Nintendo fan and even I feel blah about the console right now. I wasn't expecting to be in tears of joy or anything but I did expect to enjoy myself.

Try this Drakul. Wish I could help more, but there's not a lot of help out there yet with it being so new and I didn't have any issues connecting to my router or using my phone as a router.

http://www.examiner.com/article/having-wii-u-internet-connection-problems-maybe-this-will-help

I set up the Wii myself. I have already done the thing you linked me to, this morning and it got the Wii U connected to the wireless signal but then the wireless signal wont get an internet connection. It's not that the router isnt working or anything.

I need an internet connection to get the update to transfer my Wii stuff.

Turn the firewall off the router and see if that works. If it does, either leave it disabled (your PC should have it's own firewalls anyway) or add the Wii U to the DMZ.

Functionality wise, I am in love with the console.

I went to bed playing Tekken and I woke up feeling pretty ill. The gamepad was next to my bed though so I booted up Nintendo Land and played some crash course, checked up on some Miiverse things and then finally New Super Mario, all without turning on the TV.

Miiverse is fucking addictive. I was shocked.

Ok, we got ya that far. Now, try "admin" for the username and "password" for the password. Those are the default and I don't know if those can be changed. I know I didn't change mine. If your ISP set it up for you, they wouldn't have changed it without your permission. Try it out and we'll go from there.

Going to go all digital where I can on this. Just having all your games selectable from the pad when you're in another room without fannying around with discs is worth the extra premium.

Nintendo's site lists a Buffalo and a Toshiba drive as "recommended" and they're pretty cheap actually. Going with the Buffalo. Was only going to get a 1TB but it's only £20 for 2Tb so may as well partake.

Yeah this one usually works, and it is typically no username and admin as the password. Usually default passwords are always a combination of admin and password in some kind of arrangement.

Also, find the reset button on your router and hold it down for like 30 seconds; this should cause a factory reset on the router in the event the password has been changed for some reason.

Also, in the rare event that 192.168.1.1 does not do anything for you, try 10.0.0.1. Some routers, especially ones given out by ISPs, will use that address for access instead. Happens alot with comcast equipment.

I think I'm going to have to do a "hard reset" of the TP-Link. I've asked everyone that could have possibly set up the thing for me and no one remembers the user name and any possibly default username doesn't work.
Only problem is my brother, who is living with me for now, doesn't want me to reset it because he'll have to set stuff up for his PC again.

The site says to back up the settings before reseting but I think I need to get into the thing to do that, which I can't do until I reset it. Nothing but the Wii U has been this difficult to get online. Wii, 360, DS, PC.

Feel like I'm missing out on the best stuff of the Wii U until I get it online :(.

I do think Wii U will have a hard time matching Wii for popularity. The U makes it seem like a remodel or something, like DSi or PSX.

For the sake of non-gamers, they really should have given it a whole new name or gone with Wii 2 or Super Wii with a colour scheme based on the SNES or something that clearly signalled it was a whole new thing.

According to Nintendo, all Wii U units released by Spring 2013 will no longer have to deal with the mandatory firmware patch since it will be built-in by then.

Only reason it was huge to begin with was Nintendo unable to get everything done in time but wasn't severe enough to delay the launch itself.

Turns out Germany is the reason why the European eShop has the restricted hours for buying certain games. It was done for two reasons with the first being so Nintendo didn't have to create different eShops for the European region and because their HQ is located in Germany itself.

The Wii mode is pretty much cracked wide open. Not only that, but it still boots Gamecube games. The makers of Devolution, a USB Gamecube game booter for the Wii, thinks they can hack in Classic Controller support, meaning that the Wii U would be able to play pretty much any home console Nintendo game. The only gaps being patchy N64. Can't remember if something on Wii supports SuperFX.

According to the ZombiU development team, they were disappointed with the early reviews mostly because of how harsh they were compared to later reviews and for those same reviewers being upset that a game about survival horror actually ended up being a game involving survival horror.
When asked if he felt reviewers were put off by the survival horror aspect of the game, Brunier said, "We never hid it."

Since the Nintendo Network has to work around the older Wii and DS networks, transferring stuff and IDs from one console to another still require Nintendo to do it themselves. Once both WiiWare and DSiware are phased out, it would work just like how eShop stuff can be transferred between handhelds.

No Wii U version of Metal Gear Rising is being considered by Kojima with the official reason of him not considering the tablet as an actual controller.

Also not exactly pleased with the way money can be added to your eShop balance in chucks of £10, £20, £50 and something insane like £110. Yet there are games going for £10.99. So, if I want that game, I've to spend £20.

Think its only available through the Wii section of the eShop until Nintendo finishes up unifying all the shops they currently have into a single eShop.

I'd guess by March since they already said that is when everything they didn't finish and early patching of the Network would be all done.

According to Miyamoto , Pikmin 3 will be closer in gameplay style to Pikmin 1 than Pikmin 2. Also want a heavier emphasis on strategy decisions which is something Pikmin 2 either dropped or streamlined to be a quicker game.

"Our main aim in Pikmin 2 was to get rid of any stress as much as possible, so that it would be very user-friendly. Well, I myself couldn't agree with that direction perfectly. That kind of nature of Pikmin 1 was exactly what I wanted to reproduce and I was actually intentionally doing so, so that Pikmin 1 could be a strategic game."

Probably going to get patched as soon as possible but apparently buying a used Wii U can unlock whatever was purchased by the previous owner even if the Network ID is removed or transferred.

Either Nintendo hasn't finished up reworking the transferring setup or something went wrong since purchases ended up being tied to the console ID and not a Network ID or a combo of both.

Think Microsoft uses a combo system when it comes to transferring content rights.

Wii U Nintendo Direct tomorrow, 2pm UK time.

There was a rumour about a Nintendo Direct in January to reveal Smash Bros. Hoping that's what it is.

I'm finally getting around to transferring my Wii stuff to my Wii U. I have VC games on my SD card already, will they be transfered to or what?
Hugely worried about doing something wrong and only transferring 1/3 of my stuff, losing another 1/3 and somehow being unable to ever transfer 1/3 because it's a one time online thing.

So, VC and WiiWare games on SD card. How does this work?

#BROKEN Hasney
01-22-2013, 09:13 AM
Saves on the SD card won't be transferred, but all content bought through the store, no matter if it's installed or not, will be. It works by using the Wii Shop Purchase History and then downloads it all on the Wii U rather than actually move things to the SD card.

Wii U Nintendo Direct tomorrow, 2pm UK time.

Japanese tweet clarifies it'll be talking about first party games/services for Wii U.

It's actually about new Wii U games (https://twitter.com/NintendoEurope/status/293719673139253248). So, it's confirmed to talk about new games and it's confirmed to be first party.
We had that rumour about SSB4 getting revealed in January 2013. I am 90% sure we'll see something about SSB4 during this ND. It may even just be a 30 second teaser that doesn't explicitly say it's SSB but I still think we'll get something.

I think it's going to be that leaked Yoshi Land or whatever. If it's anything SSB, it's going to be in pre-rendered form showing off some characters.

Also digging through the webpage source for the UK Nintendo Direct, it does mention Wii U Virtual Console too so we might hear about that along with Wii Fit U.

It's a good system, but you've only really got New Super Mario and Nintendo Land so far. Pikmin, Wario and The Wonderful 101 are out by summer and all look brilliant. Then we've got a gap and the only game I know of that is out this year that I'm looking forward to is Zelda: Wind Waker HD. The controller is also the best TV remote ever now TVii is out.

I wouldn't expect a price drop until the end of the year, but if you pick one up, get a deluxe one. The extra cost is worth it for Nintendo Land alone.

While EA in general might be loosing interest in the Wii U, at least their sub-studios are still interested in making games for it. Criterion Games said the reason Need for Speed: Most Wanted will be arriving on the Wii U is because of the Gamepad giving them some fresh ideas to do for that port.

Also ends up being the first Criterion to appear on a Nintendo console since Burnout 2 in 2002.

Uuuuurrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh! I hate it when people cry over things like this and end up getting their way.
Watch, they'll play F-Zero and the community page will be full of "Why is it 60Hz? The music is too fast!! I want the music I remember from the PAL SNES version!"

If it had been a remake of Balloon Fight then, yeah, crank it up to 60Hz but, as it's supposed to be an emulation of the PAL version, I think it should play like the PAL version did.

No, fuck the PAL versions. There's a huge reason I imported consoles and it's because we were shafted. I knew that at 13, I know that now.

So happy that common sense prevailed on this one.

It'll just lead to more crying for more stuff now they know it works.
First it was 60Hz, then it'll be demanding leaderboards and so on. Then you'll get crying for non-VC games. Crying that Waluigi isn't in Smash or because they reveal Zelda U will be cel shaded etc.

Nope, it was a VC game. Just give us the best version possible and move on.

...Although I would love Waluigi in Smash.

I mean look at that horror show. For a game like F-Zero, it's required to be in 60Hz.

If it was some turn-based RPG, whatever, just get rid of the borders if they can. But racing, it's gots to be all about that speed.

Best reasoning against the 60Hz I've seen.

Sacrilege.

I still remember the first day I owned a Super Nintendo. I was with my grandmother in Canberra, and we went into the DJ’s at Woden Plaza where they had a demo setup playing F-Zero. We ended up leaving with Super Mario World and F-Zero. It was a good day.

I didn’t bring much with me from Australia to the US, but I still have my original SNES controller here. It was a Big Deal in my growth as a person. Super Mario World was one of those games that turned me into a designer. It’s in my top 5. F-Zero, through no fault of its own, turned me into the jaded husk of a man I am today.

See, I was really good at F-Zero. Specifically, Mute City - I had that track down on lock. Anything above 2:51 was a terrible time, and I could usually break 2:50 on good runs. All of my schoolmates who challenged me were defeated. I was a golden god, until the American exchange student came to town.

I don’t even remember his name now. I just remember standing outside our classroom, and the topic of conversation moved to F-Zero. I bragged about my 2:49 lap times. Then, that goddamn seppo dropped his line.

“What? That’s a terrible time. My best is 2:32”

Even worse, he had verification from other kids who’d seen him do it. I was basically nobody now. I practiced and practiced, but never figured out how he was shaving off that much time. I’m skipping some details, but this story ends with me changing schools and never mentioning F-Zero again.

A decade later, Super Nintendo emulation becomes feasible. For old times sake, I grab a F-Zero ROM and play. I’m obviously rusty.

I get a time in the 2:30s. That goddamned asshole. Of course he got a faster time, his dumb imported purple console was 17.5% faster than all of ours. What a goddamned fucking hack on a pogo stick! If I translated my time, I would have completely smoked him! GodDAMMIT! WHAT A FUCKING HACK.

I still can’t remember this guy’s name, but every year or so I try googling around to see if I can finally get revenge. I never do.

Now, Nintendo of Europe has the balls to side with this guy, and whitewash all of the victorious lap times that us non-yanks achieved. This is our thanks for sticking by you when you didn’t release Animal Crossing? This is our thanks for being stuck with Doshin the Giant instead of Earthbound?!

Sacrilege.

I don't think he's completely serious, but we didn't get Animal Crossing N64 and I don't really think you can compare Doshin the Giant and Earthbound, as fun as Doshin could be.

Doshin and his wobbly arms. He should probably be in SSB in some way. Character, assist or an entire level.

They've got Sonic Racing Transformed at that price too. I'd go with that.
