Notes:
- 17 year gap since SC4!
- Daishi wanted to call it "Soul Edge 2," but Namco wouldn't let him.
- Crossover characters will return. Deals already signed.
- Siegfried's SC4 ending is canon. He no longer has the Soul Calibur weapon.
- Online Mode improved.
- Create-A-Character returns.
- Overall the gameplay will be more agile, fast, and 'light'. More on gameplay:
Maybe the hardcore fans will be afraid that we lose the core of the gameplay, but that's not the case. And for new players it's nice to have gameplay that is more continuous – you don't need to wait as much between moves. [...] The pace of the game has been improved, and the combos will be easier to perform, and the moves will be easier to pull out.
Confirmed Characters:
-Patroklos (Short sword + Shield): Sophitia's son and new main hero. He will use a more agile version of Sophitia's style.
-Siegfried (Zweihander sword): Former main hero, still fighting in his 40's. SC4 ending is official canon (http://youtu.be/0j5NGwA2vKA).
-Phyrrah: Sophitia's daughter and Patroklos' sister. Will presumably use a sword and shield, though this was not confirmed.
-Nightmare: Said to return.
-Amy: Revealed in studio art (http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/226409_199212750122065_157579717618702_517925_2631223_n.jpg), confirmed by Daishi. Was one of the youngest characters in SC4, though being a vampire, the time-jump means little to her visually.

Dunno. Never got into 4 the same way I did with 2 and 3. Played the shit out of 2 and especially 3. 4 is just kinda meh. Might have to do with them fucking Maxi up for me too much with the chaining combos. Like It took me a long time to get used to the new mechanics of it in 3, then in 4 it was overkill and I basically gave up on the character.
Either way, I got sick of 4 way earlier than I should have.

4 was pretty spectularily bad. But 3 wasn't exactly great either.
As for exclusive characters, if they pull that crap again, I will never purchase this game with actual funds. Screw them.

3 wasn't balanced too well and they never fixed or compensated for the save bug, but I love it.

No doubt, SC2 was far more superior to 3 and 4. SC2 was so damned good, I bought it for all 3 systems just so I could play as Link, Hiachi, and Spawn.

SC4 was great. Story mode was weak compared to SC3 (and Soul Edge for that matter). The combat was great fun, though. The Star Wars characters were a waste, simply didn't pan out. Hopefully we get some cool characters this time (maybe Final Fantasy heroes/villains?).
Would love to see this lighter, faster paced gameplay. I'm ready for anything, I love this series so much. Fuck all the others.

I should clarify that I had the Gamecube version (and yeah, Link was beastly), but that I once played the PS2 version and wasn't impressed with Heihachi. I heard Spawn could fly and had homing projectiles. :nono:

Yeah, Story was def better in three. Soooooo much effort put into it with the branching paths, secret characters, QTEs and progressive story between the fights instead of just a cutscene at the end. Hell, QTEs during the cutscenes at the end were an excellent touch.
Not to mention Create a Fighter not fucking your stats up by having them attached to your clothing. And the extra styles... :love: Some sweet shit in there, even if they were limited compared to regular movesets. Dagger and dual Nunchaku styles FTW.
Plus there was that extra Story mode where you kinda play a turn based strategy game. Loved that shit, though I don't remember it being too popular. It instantly gave all the CAF stuff a lot more importance than just being a last minute tacked on mode.
Can't really put into words how much I love SC3.

Spawn was one of my mains in SC2. He couldn't fly and he didn't have homing attacks. He had a brutal mixup game and some tricky unblockable attacks. I wouldn't say he was overpowered, though. Link was best out of the three guest characters.
Clothing didn't screw with your stats in SC4, well unless you took the character to story mode - which was pretty gay.
SC3 was stuffed with modes. Gameplay was unbalanced (Xianghua's 66A+B was un-fucking-stoppable), but it made up for that in a shit ton of modes. Kind of directly opposite of MvC3 in a way.

Link + Great Fairy Sword = Clown Shoes. Just far too powerful.
The clothes you choose for a CAF in SC4 affects your HP, Defence and what special abilities (auto-counter, venom fang, etc) you could put on your guy.

Not in versus, unless you choose special versus. Online gameplay also separated versus and special versus. The only thing forced 'perks' and special attributes was story mode.

I don't mean that they forced you to use the special abilities, I mean that it sucks that by attaching the abilities to clothing (instead of through levelling up or story progress) they limit what you can do with the CAF stuff. You can create a beastly fighter who looks absolutely retarded (clown pants, plate armour and ninja mask, whooooo) or you can make your ideal fighter and he'll have wonky abilities or crappy stats.
If you never use the abilities, then yeah it's all good.

I would also like to see more star wars characters. Fuck it, they should just do star wars vs soul calibur.
Loved the apprentice and vader in the last one. Was kind of done with the game by the time yoda came out on ps3, but he seemed fun.

Yeah, I pretty much had finished playing it by the time Vader hit the 360, so round the same time as you. I'd much rather that they did a Star Wars fighter in the same vein as SC, but as a separate entity. Those force powers definitely made for a little unbalanced gameplay.

There's more to SouCalibur (and MK) than just people swinging weapons. The games are worlds apart - gameplay and presentation wise. SC shouldn't sully itself with the likes of MK.

Sorry D Mac, but Kalyx is right on this.
MK only just dug itself out of the hole it's been in since MK Trilogy by going back to 2D gameplay. I was actually pretty surprised by how good the current MK actually is. Still not quite where I'd like to see it, but it's a huge step forward for the series. In other words, they're not ready to be crossing over with anyone else till they've improved their engine more.
Even if they ever reach a point where it's doable, it has to be crossed over with an engine similar enough to get over technical issues (like conflicting button layouts, which would be a pretty big problem with SC, or even building a new engine all together, which is expensive considering MK's recent money woes). The other problem is that the other game engine also has to be different enough to warrant fan interest. Otherwise why bother? It's a pretty big tight rope.
SF vs Tekken I can understand because it's the biggest 2D fighter vs the biggest 3D fighter. Both series are owned by massive companies with tens (possibly hundreds) of millions of dollars to throw at developing a new engine each.
Capcom vs SNK I can also understand because 2 of the longest running 2D fighter companies settled their differences and let fans decide the winner of their rivalry by making a game each... twice. It was also considerably cheaper than SF/Tekken because they both used 2D sprites instead of 3D models at the time. And the funny (unrelated) thing is that even through all the bullshit over the years (Capcom stealing the super bar concept, SNK ripping off Ken and Ryu), when they made the games they respected each other's characters and did them justice.
This is quickly turning into a tl;dr but the point is that the engines are too different and there is no real fan demand to make any of this happen. Fan demand is everything rn. It led to SF4, it led to MvC3, it led to the SF/Tekken crossovers and it led to MK getting the overhaul it really needed. So if you wanna see it, you gotta sell a few million people on it and then they have to sell the developers on it.

Also, because of how MK is, very few companies will let their characters interact with it. It's something of a Catch 22 Midway/NetherRealm put themselves in by wanting to be the 'shocking' fighting game:
a) You block yourself from doing crossovers with companies that don't want their characters being sliced apart (Capcom openly scoffs at the idea).
b) If you manage a deal, they will almost certainly have to gimp the MK side of the equation - which fans will not tolerate (MKvDC didn't pan out at all).
This is why I suggested Killer Instinct. Even with different engines, their atmosphere mixes pretty good. Who else they can tango with? Eternal Champions? They painted themselves in a corner by virtue of their biggest selling point.

Sorry but MK not stacking up to these other fighting games is an objective call. It's pretty much consensus amongst fighting gamers.
However, in the general scheme of things - it's perfectly fine that somebody prefers one game over another.
SCV will most likely be epic in the combat sense. I hope it'll get SC3's range of features. And replay.

- When asked about what will replace Critical Finishes, Daishi said the hint was in his suggested title (Soul Edge 2). In Soul Edge, characters could lose their weapons fight bare handed using a universal moveset. Maybe this will return?

- Siblings Pyrrah and Patroklos have eerie shines to their eyes.
- Stepping (quick side-steps to avoid vertical attacks) is back in full force. The original intent of SoulCalibur (Soul Edge even) was the relationship between horizontal attacks, vertical attacks, range, and stepping. SCV looks like it's bringing this back.
- Super moves of some sort, with 'super flash' cuts before them, is the biggest reveal. How this works I can't tell... I don't think this is the new punish for turtle players, though.
- That ship stage is totally a reused asset. Overall the game doesn't look like a leap from SC4, but SC4 looked awesome.
- Parries seem to work more like Street Fighter Third Strike parries now, literally - blue shade and everything. The opponent isn't repelled and you punish at will. I wonder is all four parries will work like this, or even if there is four different parries this time.

That new meter is the Critical Gauge. For now it offers EX attacks and super moves.

- The new Soul Gauge is used for the new system that merges Critical Edge (from Soul Edge) and Critical Finish (from Soul Calibur 4).
- It can be used to buffer normal attacks into a sort of EX attack.
- Fully charged, you get two super attacks.

Namco is holding a friendly contest where people get to name the non-roster characters that are fought during the story or other modes requiring a lot of generic characters.
The contest also allows a person to decide what weapon and fighting style their character will use from a large list of options.
While there is no actual prize for being picked, the winners will have their characters included in the game and everyone will get free desktop wallpaper for filling out the contest form.
When you aren't fighting characters with cool, professionally-crafted names like Patroklos Alexandra in Soulcalibur V, you'll be going toe-to-toe with an endless array of computer-controlled foes. Seeking to take a little of the generic out of these generic opponents, Namco Bandai has launched the Soulcalibur V character naming promotion, in which they get you to do their work in exchange for the chance to tell other people you did their work!

Hot damn Natsu is great. Love my new Taki replacement. Wall moves are back! Zwei seems to have a summon move, I wanna see more. MORE! Very hype for this. Don't think it's random they're using SC2's intro music.
And Sophitia is totally the new main villain.

Taki could still show up in the game or at least during the storyline of Natsu after the producer for the game hinted that Natsu only copies some of Taki's moves and style and isn't meant to be an exact replacement for the game.
Although Taki could still end up being not playable even if she does show up in the storyline since he wouldn't confirm her being a playable character.
Natsu, Tago explained, is a disciple of Soulcalibur ninja mainstay Taki, and largely a replacement for the character who fights with dual kodachi swords. Tago says that Natsu will borrow many of Taki's trademark moves, but that she's young, "a little rebellious" and "doesn't want to copy what her master does or what she looks like."
As for her master? "Taki is, of course, not dead," Tago stressed. He wouldn't confirm whether she'd be a playable character, but said "there is a possibility that you'll see an older Taki" in Soulcalibur V. "In terms of her outfit, we don't know if she'll be in body tights," he joked.

Quick Move, Tago explained, is a revamped side-stepping move, a dodge that will rapidly put a player behind his or her opponent to open the window to attack. Based on some rumors, Namco is outsourcing the entire story mode to another developer instead of having just 1 studio work on the entire game.
According to Andriasang, CyberConnect2 (the team behind Asura’s Wrath, the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja titles, and various other Namco fighters) will be taking story mode out of Project Soul’s hands. The developer is said to be handling storyboarding, motion capture work and the art design for this single player campaign.
Similar thing happened with Deus Ex Human Revolution where only the boss fights were outsourced to a different studio although the main problem ended up being how that studio loved shooters and had no clue on the gameplay style nor story regarding the Deus Ex series.

The online mode of Soul Calibur V is divided essentially into two sections: Player Match and the Global Coliseum.
Player Match: players can create special rooms, access to challenge friends in single match or in small tournaments.
Viewers can leave comments in a chat room.
Global Colosseum is an Extended Lobby, which can access up to 50 Players.
Each player is represented by a card (which can be customized with a number of options).
UI very “visual” and easily readable.
Selecting a player card, you can check stats and challenge a Player.
In the MIddle of Colosseo there are two section.
Random Match is always available.
Players can place their card for random matches.
The other area is dedicated to the Ranked Match. It will not always active: will light up about 2 times a month, for a few days.
Another major introduction is the Soul Link. You can choose up to three players to be monitored constantly to keep an eye on their stats and activities. (A sort of Autolog)
Soul Calibur V servers are located in the Tokyo office,
Netcode is very stable.

Kilk, Elysuim, and an evil version of Pyrrha (Omega Pyrrha) are rumored to be the final unannounced characters for the game based on a suppossed leak of the character select screen for the game's final roster.
It would also confirm Talim and Zasamel are not in the game itself.
You get Alpha Patroklos, Edge Master, Elysium and Omega Pyrrha after completing the story mode. Elysium looks like Sophitia (she is NOT Sophitia though) but she can use any style (like Edge master).After that Legendary Souls mode is unlocked.The first fight in LS is with Kilik, after victory he is unlocked. Omega Pyrrha has the same move list as the ordinary one but uses Soul Edge. Alpha Patroklos = Setsuka. Kilik can use any style like Edge master. There are still two slots left. I believe one is for Dampierre and the second is for Algol (or other all-style character). Create a character screen has more locked slots for styles than the arcade select screen. Two more locked slots (where Ezio and random question sign are in the arcade). One is obviously for Ezio and the second one may be a surprise. Devil Jin is in the left corner, so it’s not for him."

Hoping that Ivy returns to form in this. I got into this series at 2, and Ivy was easily the most fun character to play imo, with her multiple stances and such. Then they went and gutted her in 3 and she didn't really get any better in 4. It's kept me from getting really into series, because I was nasty in 2, but never got too involved with 3 and 4.
Honestly, with UFC coming out in 3 weeks and SFxT shortly after that, I probably won't get hardcore about this game either way.

How's the combat to you? I assure you it's better than MK. Then again, what you want out of fighting games is what you want. I just think you're 'missing the point' of the genre. To me it's like somebody playing an RPG straight through, ignoring side-quests, ignoring exploration, doing the main story as linear as possible and beating the game with bare minimum abilities/character level and saying, "That's it, I'm done with it." It just comes off as strange to me.
If you abandon SCV after merely playing the story/arcade mode, and this I say for all fighting games, then you have not given the game fair chance to impress you.

The combat is still great and the graphics are still beautiful. Outside of that, it's a slight disappointment, as this is the weakest single player experience in the series yet. The game just never attempts to give us something we haven't seen before. It's more comfortable recycling the same old gameplay with a few additions pilfered from other trend-setting fighting games. Shame, because in many ways this is a quality title, with plenty of depth in its combat, and refinements that will keep diehard fans busy.

Yea, I'm just slowly learning more moves as I go. I've known the double-whirl and the running Y,Y,Y combo for a while. Learned the Y,B,bRT for the Break achievement, just recently discovered the wonders of his Y+B stick stall moves and the jabs and the backwards tailfuck. But I keep finding more and more shit that I don't do know. Like some of the low kick combos and shit. Plus I'm trying to diversify but the only one I know more about is Ezio but I'm too slow with him.
On a sidenote I just made Faith(Mirror's Edge) today and gave her Natsu's style so I wanna learn more of that. Especially that multi-flip Liontamer. LOVE IT
Thankfully I'm almost done with the online bullshittery. Just got the 50 wins, all I need to do is rank up to D1 and I'm like 6 wins from that. Then it's the fucking quick battles.

Fighting Soul Calibur was kinda epic, though. The only time it manifested itself as Soul Edge did a few times before. I do agree Pat never actually gets his comeuppance, which is very important to me as a writer and viewer. I never feel good when characters do certain wrongs and 'get away with it' or don't 'get theirs' enough. He just sorta killed innocent people and then... finds his lost family. By comparison - Seig, who actually had a pretty good excuse, gave himself shit through 3 and 4 about what he did as Nightmare. I'm talking nearly ten years of guilt. Pat just waves it off. It's something I would have put more emphasis on.
And the sister? She also murdered people but when you're raised by Tira I suppose you get a 'troubled childhood' pass. Her character just didn't fit the bill, though. She should have been more divided, like at times she would like to kill. It's hard to believe she did what she did completely out of duress and parental pressure, that just makes her come off as an idiot. Her "I don't wanna die" floor stab is hilarious, though.
I would have liked to see a swerve with Pat getting Soul Edge and Phyra getting Soul Calibur.

As the game lacks a demo, would anyone recommend this game for me?
I like SC1, even if I have a long way before I can play it impressively. I still enjoy playing it. I had SC2 but didn't give it a chance before returning it, having bought it purely for Link and my interests were all over the place at the time.
I honestly cannot remember even hearing about SC3.
SCIV, I've only played the demo and found it ok with I guess. So, SCV. Get it or forget it?
The create a character really has my interest peaked. I love creation in any game.

The meter, EX, and supermoves work well enough within SoulCalibur's play style. Supermoves aren't even the best use of meter, anyway.
The game is great, my favorite fighter right now.

I'm mainly a Street Fighter guy so adding some Street Fighter elements to any fighting game should help me enjoy it.
I know it's not what the game is all about but how in depth is character creation? Is it a genuine character creator or is it just building a character model and assigning the pre set moves of a "real" character?
I've watched a lot of character creation videos and I see it saying "Style: Devil Jin" etc. So would that be Devil Jins moves?
Can I choose the special effects on my fighter, so if I swing a sword it'll leave a red trail or whatever? Can I alter stats like speed and strength? Are there any voice options that wont make my characters sound Californian.

Pretty much the best creation mode in any fighting game.
- Multiple weapon choices (yes, including the color of the tail effects)
- A lot of clothing/armor pieces
- Body morphing options
- Weapon options (and most can be colored)
- A color system for hue and brightness (covers everything under the sun)
- Voice adjust, 'character' options
- Sticker/Tattoo options
- Texture options for most pieces (and textures can be color edited)
- Hair, eye color, skin color
It's pretty boss. And some DLC pieces are available now with more on the way.

Sounds great, I think I'll give it a shot then.
Most of the creation videos I watched didn't make it look very good with people trying to create Spongebob and cartoon characters by putting faceless masks on characters and adding shapes onto it.
I enjoyed MK: Armageddons CaC so I should enjoy this even more.
I really hope SFV gets in on this properly. Not just colour edit like SFxT. MK and SC have done it, it's time SF did it as well.
Capcom could always look at it as an excuse to pump out mountains of DLC for parts, if that helps them.
Just as long as they don't make it barebones on purchase so you're pretty much forced to buy all the DLC if you want to actually use the feature.

Movesets are preset, tho. Every character style (except Ezio, obv) plus devil jin style is a decent amount to choose from though.

Decided I'll just pick this up tomorrow, rather than wait until Tuesday.
I've been doing a bit more research and I found out that armour falls off mid battle. I'm going to guess this has no effect on how much damage you recieve, right?
If it did, everyone would clad themselves in armour.

Nah, it's just an effect. When you take more damage then you have left in your health bar your armor shatters and you get a different KO screen. It's a cool effect, but gameplay isn't altered. Also happens to created characters, with funny results.

I thought it was probably just cosmetic.
I'm still waiting for Kinect to be used for character creation in a game. It can scan faces so why not have it scan the dimensions of a face and replicate it on the screen? Same for bodies.
It would make my obligatory "me in the game" character much easier in things like SvR or this, when I get it.
I'm hoping it doesn't take too long to unlock everything. I have my 4 year old nephew coming up to stay for a few days this week. I know he'd really enjoy messing around with character creation.
Shame we can't DL other peoples creations. He's reached the age where he has gotten into super heroes in a big way so he'd have liked to have seen Spider-Man, Deadpool, Batman etc running around.
I've read about "Legendary Souls" mode being the quickest way. I'm not entirely sure what it is. Sounds like some kind of survival/boss mode.

Legendary Souls is basically arcade mode with the CPU on some godly difficulty. Very frustrating, but you get points. Ranked and Player Matches also get you points, as well as the story mode. I hate the grind and would have liked some kind of unlock key sold on XBL like WWE 12.
The creation pieces are given sparingly throughout the levels, kinda frustrating. Goes up to 50 and I'm in the late 40s.

Ok, so I've made one character. That's the first thing I did. I made my "Drakul" character. I like the customisation a lot and intend to fill up every available slot. I'm hoping their is a lot of parts to unlock.
All I've done in the game is make one character and play through Arcade (Europe) once. That was all a good enough time to make me buy some DLC. I bought a couple of customisation packs and that Dampiere character or however it's spelt.
My only issue is the lack of Celtic equipment. I see no kilts, no claymores, no Celtic sheild or warpaint. They have every other culture represented from Japan to the cowboys of the US. Even bellbottoms from the 70's. Unless the Celtic stuff is an unlockable or future DLC.
Is Dampiere a joke character? I haven't played as anyone but Drakul yet but I looked at Dampieres "style" in customisation and see all his stats are pretty much zero. They charged us 400 points for a JOKE?

If you joined, I'd not be able to win :(. I'm still at a very basic level. Any special move I do right now is done by inputting the shoryuken motion, hitting a button and hoping it does something. Sometimes going crazy and trying a half or full circle motion. Input does seem a bit strict at times. I'll put in a command I know is a move and it wont do anything sometimes.
I've tried Arcade, Quick Battle, Creation, Online and Story. My two favourite things so far being creation and Quick Battle because it lets me fight against all these created characters without having to play people online.
I'm really interested in seeing everyone elses characters. Especially anyone from TPWW.
The AI is odd in this game. Sometimes it just sits there, other times it blocks absolutely everything and sometimes it even just does one big combo and gets a KO. Seems a bit manic.
I'm guessing once I really get to grips with the combat, it wont seem as manic.
If I show off a character and the name sounds like a made up fantasy name, it's probably a real Scottish/Celtic/Gaelic name. Like "Morfran", a knight character I made. Morfran being a real boys name that means "ugly demon".

This game is less about motion+buttons and more about simple direction+button/button combination. There are motion moves in the game, but just a few. Back, neutral, forward, back-down, down, and forward-down + anything will yield something different.
Forward-down+B is usually a basic launcher. Forward+B is often a poke of some sort.
Down+A/B are usually mid attacks that leave you in crouch state (K is often a low hit).
Up (neutral, forward, back)+A/B/K are jump attacks that dodge lows. Some even score a knockdown. I use them as a flashy way to dodge lows, myself.
Probably gonna jump on in a few. Don't know.

Had a session with Drakul. Got whooped, when I wasn't using Leixia, Siegried, and Nightmare.
Those are the only characters I ever deeply learned how to use, and even then, it's been a while and there have been major changes.

Made a pretty bad Blackadder II in the creation mode. I couldn't give him a face that didn't look 21 years old. The only other option for faces is "stroke victim".
I made a decent Urien. A tanned guy in a loin cloth. You can't really mess that up.
I'm most proud of my Shredder. Made him last night and he's pretty spot on. The helmet, mask, cape, voice, sword, everything. I want to show him off.

What's the point of the music and item catalog dlc? It says you can't look at the catalog in game but you can't look at it outside of the game either.

Ever let a 4 year old use the character creator? I have my nephew over at my house for a few days and I let him make some guys in the creation mode.
So far, he's made 3 characters, all dressed from head to toe in green with the default voice set to maximum squeekiness.
One, called Eddy, has a cape and a panda head, using Cervantes style. Another, Edd is dressed in mismatching green armour, also using default voice at max squeekiness and uses the style of the pole character, I forget his name.
The final one is a green pirate, same voice as above, also using Cervantes style. I was hoping he'd go with Ed so he'd have Ed, Edd & Eddy.
He settled for Cpt Cabbage.
He seems to really like the sinking merchant ship level with Cervantes music because it's like "Pirates of the Caribbean".
No real point to this post. Just that young kids seem to like squeeky voices and things dressed in their favourite colour. I guess that explains the Chipmunks.
Might use them online next time.

So I made this girl who can either be Nightmare's daughter or little sister. She's small so the reach isn't the same and it's made me focus on pokes and Grim Sliding a lot more. It's kind of like how I play 'Nightmare' differently depending on whether it's him or a created character. I don't know why I do that.
Made a good version of her with Seig's moves. I kinda miss classic Nighty so this may make me pick up that movelist. Oddly enough, I have no Devil Jin characters. I'll put somebody together soon.

I was going to pick a character with Astaroths style but the only two characters I've given his moves to so far are an ingame version of me and a SC version of a wrestling character I always make in WWE games.
I could have used Astaroth himself but I've barely touched any of the real characters since I bought the game. I prefer just using my created guys. Character creation being the whole reason I bought the game.
I have many characters I never got to show.
Those names are real names or words btw. Morfran being a Celtic boys name meaning "Ugly demon".
The Scottish warriors name means "fire".
I think it would be cool if we could assign our created characters a stage and theme. Then maybe put them into a route in arcade mode or maybe even make our own route.
This would be even better if the game had "original" music than none of the main cast use, like SvR but a better selection.

Recovering in SC (and most 3D fighters) requires some forethought since you can get pummeled the entire time and the there is no invincibility period like in 2D fighters. You can fast recover (in several directions), roll forward or back, spin up or down, stand straight up and defend from there, and there's some cases where it's best to stay down!

I've been it situations where I'm attacked no matter what I do. I roll forward, back, left or right and I'm whacked with someones sword.
Is it possible to attack when down at all? I've never understood why some games let you be hit when you can't hit back.
That'd be one of my philosphies if I had my own fighting game. The fight wouldn't stop when you fell over. You would be able to fight your way to your feet.
