Virgil had enough of the Million Dollar Man and defected from him. Then had his own run as a face, which was very unsuccessful. Even though I liked him, I think it was safe to say he never really got over with fans.
Alex Riley defected from The Miz.
Discuss.

I wasn't watching back then, but the difference in climate is probably enough to make them apples and oranges. Alex Riley breaking away from The Miz has made him look like a fucking man. Not just like a guy who has been kicked to the curb, or is just sick of being berated. In a casual fan's eyes, Riley has looked like a guy who can and will kick The Miz's ass.
This is why, even though I'm not sure it will happen -- I think the WWE is best off putting Riley over The Miz at Capitol Punishment. Even if they do something where The Miz looks to cheat, but Riley out-cheats him. This potential feud is just getting started, and I think it could have the legs to walk a mile for the WWE. Have Riley go over The Miz at Capitol Punishment, and The Miz call bullshit. They both get into Money in the Bank, and they sort of cancel each other out there. At SummerSlam (the second biggest PPV of the year), have them go at it in a Street Fight, or something.
In my eyes, The Miz is cemented as a top star. Riley, however, is not. He's got all the face momentum in the world right now, but why fight against it? The difference between Riley and Virgil will be whether the WWE decides Riley is a main eventer (note: not the next World Champion or anything), or just a guy who had his moment but isn't better than his former mentor.
