View Full Version : Best & Worst #2: United States Champion [RESULTS POSTED]
Steve Austin enters the B&W Hall of Fame as 'Best WWF/E World Champion' just as Jeff Hardy and Bob Backlund enter the B&W Hall of Shame as the 'Worst' in that category.
Up for your deliberation this time is the United States Championship.
We'll consider it's existence in WCW and WWE as the same lineage/belt. So, in your estimation, using whatever criteria you choose to, who was the very Best and very Worst to hold the US Title?
Best: Chris Benoit
Worst: Orlando Jordan

Best - Sting
Worst - David Flair
you really cant argue about David Flair being the worst..he sucked as a wrestler, he didn't win the belt (Ric "gave" him the belt) and I think he only successfully defended it once but he needed the Horsemen's help to do that.

Actually I would argue that to point out Jim Duggan was no better when he won the title in 40 seconds in a squash over Austin. Austin was a good mid card talent at the time and WCW just buried him with a guy who was already 10 years past his prime. David Flair was a joke as well but WCW dropped the ball burying Austin like that. Something like that sticks out in my opinion more than David Flair who no one really remembers being US champion more than Austin getting buried by Bischoff and WCW management. Just a food for thought here.

Best: Tie between Benoit and Kofi (the latter was defending it it fatal 4 ways, triple threat, and 6 way matches during his 1st run)
Worst: Rick Steiner (don't even remember that reign since it was near WCW's death and i'm sure it was pointless)

At least Duggan was an established wrestler and even if it was a sqaush he did win the belt. The only reason David Flair had it is because his father was Ric Flair and they didnt even have him win the belt in a match.

Never said your point was invalid. Just retorted with a thought against it. Even pos repped you for it. Flair did suck but people are less likely to remember Jim than Duggan. But kudos to you David Flair is up there as top 5 for worst US champ ever.

That was reign was good use of Rick Steiner actually, he held the title well over a year combined I bet.
Best - Lex Luger, he brought the title to heights it really never had been or got to again. To my memory he was also elevated via the title, they made the title important which made him important. In his prime he was the perfect US Champion.
Honorable mentions Austin, Raven, and Chris Benoit.
Worst - this is hard because there are so many forgettable holders, I'm gonna go with.... hmmm....
David Flair.... I can't remember anyone else worse.

If WCW US title reigns are included:
Best: Diamond Dallas Page-absolutely loved this reign. All the defenses were great and one of the best parts of WCW at the time.
Worst: David Flair
If WWE reigns are only being considered
Best: Chris Benoit

There was a point where the US Title in WCW was what the Intercontinental Title was in the WWF, the belt they'd give guys who were on the rise, to see if they were World Champion material...

Best - The Miz.
Loved how much he developed and momentum he gained during his reign which ended up setting up his future WWE championship reign and main event status.
Worst - Raven's 1 day reign.
WCW almost completely mis-managed his entire time with the company and instead of using the victory over DDP as a launch point, he lost it the next day to Goldberg who was more focused on chasing the heavyweight title than being a US champion. He never went back competing in the division due to be occupied in feuds against his flock and other lower tier stuff during the last year in the company.

I never saw much of the US Title in WCW, but in the WWE, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a guy who held the belt as well as Chris Benoit did. His matches were great, he often dominated, and it felt like he actually really wanted to be the US Champion. His stuff with MVP was great, too, and then he passed off the belt to MVP, whose first reign I felt was magnificent, too. I'd like to say that I feel that Dolph Ziggler could be remembered as one of the greatest US Champions if he has the kind of reign I can imagine him having. Once he finally gets done with Kofi Kingston, they can feud him with Evan Bourne. If Ziggler wins that, next can be Zack Ryder, etc. So many fun match-ups, and if Ziggler holds the US Title through it, and with the WWE often flirting with him near the top -- I can imagine him having a better reign than MVP's.

Never watched WCW, so based on WWE alone:
Best: Guerrero
Worst: Bobby Lashley
I'm interested to see where Ziggler goes with the belt. The guy has got looks and talent, and should get some very good matches out of the likes of Kofi, Bryan, DiBiase, Rhodes and hopefully Ryder.
3 of those guys are on the opposite brand to Ziggler/the US Title. Whilst cross-brand matches aren't out of the question, I think there's more chance we'll see great matches against Zack Ryder (You Know It States Champion), Jack Swagger (All American American "American" Champion), Evan Bourne (Air-merican Champion :shifty:), etc.
In fact, I'm having trouble thinking of decent face challengers for Dolph. Riley maybe?

I almost forgot about the brand divide. Ziggler has only recently switched too, so there's little chance of him going back.

Alright I forgot about one person who deserved the honor more but he's damn near close.
R-Truth, Finlay, Kennedy, Orlando Jordan, Carlito and Booker T all had worse WWE-era US title reigns imo than Hardy and that's only off the top of my head/not including WCW. That belt has arguably never been made to look more meaningful than when MVP and Hardy went back and forth over it for god knows how long.
