View Full Version : For those of you skeptical about CM Punk and "ball dropping"

You're so right.

I didn't watch NOC, but I read the results, and it's so stupid. They've managed to wash Punk down with pedigrees and powerbombs. Del Rio takes the title from him MITB style after he fended that off already once in Chicago. Then it's Cena's turn to beat Punk, which is fine, but then he actually goes on to win the title.

???????????????????????

Why didn't they just put the title on Punk and keep it there? He could be the outspoken WWE champ that constantly annoys the authority figures, and he could taunt them by being the champ. It'd just add more to it. Instead of HHH being the annoying prick heel that would fit well here, we're washed up in a sea of random shit. Nothing is resolved or changed, except for the fact that the WWE's next big guy just ate a pedigree and a loss to someone who isn't even going to be wrestling anymore.

And Cena's running around all fuel-injected from his feud with Punk with a brand new WWE title.

(I reserve the right to be hypocritical if Rock defeats Cena)

Honestly, we already knew Nash had it in for Punk, we knew HHH was the COO, and this PPV changed none of that. It didn't create new questions for its lack of conclusion. This must be the result of changes due to Nash's other projects or something, no? Congratulations, if so, for starting to fuck up hard with your next big star because of Nash.

(I reserve the right to be hypocritical if Rock goes off to film a movie during Survivor Series)

TLDR/i am retarded, THE PIONT IS THAT THE WEE IS NOT CAPITALIZING AS WELL AS THEY COULD HAVE THUS FAR ON THE RISING OF A NEW STAR!!!!!!

I think the side action (Miz/Truth and Nash) was meant to be more important than the finish, instead it came out kind of confusing.

WWE has done a pretty good job of making things lead on into the next show lately.

People have been pissing and moaning for most of CM Punk's tenure about how he wasn't being given the opportunity to participate in higher profile feuds and rightfully so (I truly believe he was under appreciated/misunderstood by Vince for awhile). Now he main events a pay per view called "Night of Champions" without an actual title at stake and is involved in a storyline that has taken precedent over SuperCena and the Heavyweight Championships, but people are still complaining.

At this same pay per view last year, Punk jobbed to Big Slow and his shitty KO punch in Chicago. I thought they dropped the ball on him then, but they've managed to build him up to this point and given him an opportunity to cut unconventional promos and say things about the company/executives/other wrestlers that no one else on the roster outside of Cena and Rock would be allowed to say.

It was almost 2 years after "Austin 3:16" that Stone Cold actually won the WWF Championship and he turned out O.K. It's only been 4 months since CM Punk cut his "worked shoot" that had so many people jumping on his nuts he needed Bella Powder for the chafing.

Let's give this storyline and Punk's direction time to fully develop and be fleshed out before we start saying they've dropped the ball. Especially with Miz/R-Truth getting involved and Vince's pending return.

For the record I'm guessing that Johnny Ace wasn't texting Nash.

I took one look at your signature and realised how biased the argument I was about to read was going to be.

The guy is main eventing PPVs above both world titles and with arguably the biggest star in recent WWE history. I think the match itself was overbooked shite, and his current direction is a little confusing, but this is only the start of Punk's second chapter. Sit it out, and wait - there are certainly more convincing things for him around the corner.

Just be grateful you're not a Christian mark instead.

I challenge both of you to look beyond whether or not CM Punk belongs in the main event picture. This is not part of the argument, so shut up. It's about how something could be done much better, regardless of who or what it is. In this case it happens to be CM Punk. For the record, when Punk was holding out on resigning, I said that the WWE would be fine without him and that him leaving wouldn't hurt that much. But that isn't what happened. He's starting to get pretty big, and when the WWE begins fucking it up, and people say, hey, the WWE is fucking this up, there are better discussions to be had as opposed to "PEOPLE ARE BITCHING THAT THIS GUY DID THIS AND THIS" and blah blah.

Chavo, your assumption that I'm biased based on a graphic in my signature is far more biased than anything I said in the op.

I don't mind Punks direction, as others have said, you gotta wait it out, nothings gonna happen instantly.

However, I am kinda disapointed by Cena's direction since the Punk feud. And even Punk called up on this when he said about how we're back to the status quo of Cena just coming out and getting his rematches. Punk never really got his 'rematch', instead, he beat Cena two PPV's in a row, and then went on to feud with Nash and Triple H while for no reason whatsoever, Cena gets more title shots.

Punk will always be one of those guys who's credibility isn't damaged by losing. Didn't he go something like 14 PPVs without a win? Just sayin' that once they're done with this current storyline after HIAC, he'll probably have another reign and this "ball dropping" you speak of will be forgotten about.

Also, you hurt my feelings when you told me to shut up. Not cool.

There is something to be said about waiting to see how things play out. But it seems obvious that Survivor Series will have a bunch of reluctant faces beating the crap out of heels. Guy doesn't have to be pedigreed and be in some random weird shit storyline to make that happen. This thing is losing momentum.

Agreed, as of late I've been watching in the same way I did when I was younger, without nitpicking at bad things and I've been enjoying the majority of the programming.

In the NOC thread CSL pointed out that some people seem to be viewing wrestling as if it were an HBO show or something. It's not, it's more akin to a soap opera, it will be ridiculous at times and not always make complete sense in terms of characters, but it will entertain if you let it.

How can you say the WWE has fucked up if we haven't even had the payoff/ conclusion of the storyline yet? Unless he goes out and jobs to Zack Ryder on Raw tonight, Punk's still in the highest profile feud in the WWE and will likely face off with and beat Nash eventually and continue up the chain the same way Austin did against Bret and Shawn during his run. Hell, like most memorable wrestlers that aren't John Cena.

Don't you think it's possible that they're building up to something bigger by introducing Miz/Truth? Don't you think it's going to make more people rally around Punk by him being fucked over in that match than having him win that match? Doesn't it make more sense to have your "next big guy" lose in the short term on minor PPVs and win in the long term on major PPVs like Survivor Series, the Royal Rumble and Wrestlemania than be booked like Cena where he wins all the time and people grow tired of it?

How can you say the WWE has fucked up if we haven't even had the payoff/ conclusion of the storyline yet?

How can someone say that WWE fucked up? CM Punk goes from being the hottest thing in wrestling in probably ten years, with people begging him to come on ESPN and getting into the likes of GQ magazine, to completely and utterly losing any and all mainstream coverage when WWE turns Punk from his self-made character and storyline into a WWE-style character in a WWE-style storyline. He was enormous, and WWE threw it away for their regular shit booking.

WWE fucked up. Did they ruin Punk for die-hard WWE fans? No. I still stand by my opinion that Punk will mean nothing come the Rumble, but I'm open to that not being the case. But they ruined him for fans who returned to watch him, and fans who ordered Money in the Bank and SummerSlam who normally wouldn't order PPVs. And that's a bigger problem, and shows a lack of willingness and wanting to expand away from their comfort zone to make money.

All I'm really saying here is there is a clear and stark contrast between Punk pre-MITB push/character and post-SummerSlam push/character. He went from being a true focal point of the show and being something different and unique to being WWE-ized and someone who could be replaced by any main eventer. And it's true. Anyone could have called Stephanie stupid and pissed off Triple H. Anyone could be playing fourth fiddle to Triple H, Nash and Laurinitis. That's the focal point of this feud, not Punk. And THAT'S the problem with Punk's booking. I don't even have a problem with the fact that Punk lost. Punk can lose and still be over. But he can't be booked like shit and be expected to stay over.

And I guarantee. I guaran-fucking-tee that Triple H and Punk will be buddy buddy by the time this is over. And it will make absolutely no sense whatsoever and complete the castration of Punk. Why are you blaming wwe? Didn't punk say himself he has the power to say no if it's stupid. Dude, it's wrestling. People got excited because he said things about the company ,yeah, but how much more could he say? He said everything in that first promo really the next two ppv's he was riding that wave of momentum. It's not punk's character that has any particular thing wrong with it it's WWE as a whole not taking advantage and riding that wave of momentum.

Imho the steam that would've powered punks character would be if WWE actually made a change and we got a new main eventer out of it or a new youth movement.

Punk's character was and is still based on change and slowly we see some of that change coming to fruition

I agree with you. It's WWE not taking advantage of it. And I agree that the "shooter" character had to be toned down. There was no way he would have continued with it at the level he was. But that doesn't mean he couldn't have leveled out and still appeared important in the story.

Like I said, my whole point is that WWE is making Punk an insignificant part of the storyline by the week, and also WWE-izing him (for example, that minute of him doing the "gagging" sounds was Cena-esq).

Yeah, I quite often disagree with Xero but I usually see where he;s coming from. Not at all really here, the Nash/HHH fall-out feels very much like a side-story compared to the main focal point, which is Punk's quest for change. Nash and Johnny Ace now also want change, but for their own gain in a different way from Punk.

The side-stories are nice, they stop things from getting stale when this could go on for quite a while, but there is no way Punk isn't the focus of the whole thing. HHH's nose isn't taking too much of the spotlight here, for a change.

Most of that main stream attention came from wrestling haters like Jim Rome and Colin Cowherd at ESPN and other mainstream reporters getting a hard on because they thought a wrestler actually shot his mouth off about WWE on live television and were looking for a story to bury wrestling, not because they suddenly gave a shit about pro wrestling or looked at Punk and immediately saw his star potential as an A List Hollywood celebrity. He dropped off in the mainstream media because they had no use for him once it was revealed that it was a work.

Miz has crossover appeal in the same way Otunga has crossover appeal. People are familiar with them and show marginal interest in them because of their reality show experiences and spouse (in Otunga's case). If they were regular wrestlers it would be a different story.

Yes, Punk delivered an amazing promo but you fail to give WWE credit for giving him the platform to cut that promo and say the things he said. I guarantee you if Vince, Stephanie or even Hunter had a problem with it, we never would have heard it. Also, perhaps the most brilliant part of it was them concluding it by cutting his mic, because that's what made it seem real.

Like I said, my whole point is that WWE is making Punk an insignificant part of the storyline by the week, and also WWE-izing him (for example, that minute of him doing the "gagging" sounds was Cena-esq).

Why do you give Punk credit for that brilliant "shooter" promo we all love, but say he's being WWE-ized for promos that don't go over as well? I think he has the same amount of influence over his promos as he did then, but they're not having the same effect because the shock value in what he is saying is gone.

The mysterious Blakeamus has an opinion...at least it took 3 Pedigrees and a Jackknife powerbomb for him to lose. I would rather have that than Triple H just coming out of nowhere with just ONE pedigree and striking the nail in the coffin towards CM Punk's hot position. All in all, CM Punk still looked strong and I am more interested in seeing what tonight's RAW will bring.

The shock value has settled down when it comes to Punk's promos. But you have to agree that he hasn't become stale like John Cena.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, WWE is not letting Punk do all that he could do...they are holding him back.

Also, the minute he turned full-fledged face and started playing up to the crowd, that was the moment where all this build-up went to waste. After that "shoot" he did on RAW, his best bet was to remain heel, or at the very least, a "tweener".

The 2nd Pedigree and subsequent kick out meant more in terms of how they're booking Punk (to me) than anything else. You knew Triple H was gonna win when they announced the stip, and it took Miz, Truth, and almighty Nash AND 3 Pedigrees to keep him down.

Act the same way he eas acting as leader of Nexus, and when he did the promo. That's what got him the audience's support and attention, so there was no need to change it up.

I can see how you look at it, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. But hes going through a different approach, more like a rebel or tweener who wants to see change and got the attention of the fans who are also craving the same thing. It is really hard to continue what he was doing back in Nexus because the crowd was behind him even when he would declare how pathetic they were. And at that point, was he main eventing PPV's? Was he trending WWE Ice Cream Bars? Was he a hot media attraction from that time. No. He's evolving his character and I really don't see how the current CM Punk is anywhere similar to his ECW/WHC title run as a face? Maybe I'm missing something. Enlighten me.

My biggest hope is that this is a "slow burn" for Punk towards being champ again/"The Man" where those things are kept away from him by The Conspiracy - which I think is a cool name for a Corporation style faction.

Eventually he'd break through all in his way to become "The Guy" with a WM win (although the "shine" from that probably won't be as huge with Rock/Cena scheduled as the Main Event).

Still feel like Orton could have been bigger than he is right now if they'd kept him chasing the title insetad of having him win the title at last years NoC. And we all know the reaction when Cena wins the belt back after a 5 minute chase...

To Hasney, in case you haven't caught on, I usually try not to give a shit. It is, I admit, slightly difficult to ignore a bunch of drooling English teachers who overvalue the word "post" and what this actually means at times, but for the most part it isn't hard.

If it would please your faggotry, I could approach every single post with a disproportionate amount of thought. It is much easier however to try to remind people that free-form writing is a way to quickly project your ideas. You are on the internet, reading what I have typed into a box. I hit submit reply. This is a discussion environment, people are continually discussing the discussion, and it's stupid.

Green blocks by one's name, their "skill at posting," or any other imaginary aspect of internet discussion are rightfully quantified by any individual who deems it fit, however, in doing so you are still contributing far less to any conversation that does not inflate the importance of the way in which someone chooses to express their thoughts or opinions.

Now, for those of you who actually pay attention to the argument long enough to piss out your shallow, "But CM Punk is in the main event," "CM Punk just won the WWE title," "THE IWC (Insert some comment that makes you think you're any different from any other wrestling fan with an internet connection)," you're not as smart as you think by isolating a subtopic of the conversation and contextually relocating it.

Agree or disagree as you will, but don't act like a retard while calling someone a retard. A few people think that the WWE has failed to capitalize on what was a red hot moment. Chicago was epic. Is every city going to be that way? No. Right place, right time, right circumstance. However, in an alternate reality, if Steve Austin were to say, "Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass," and the Attitude Era didn't explode the way it did, we would certainly assert that they dropped the ball there as well.

I feel that CM Punk has somewhat cooled, but I think that's just the nature of the beast. Punk caused an initial stir, and it's just hard to follow that up with more bangs. But now I'm really invested in his journey, and that's where the cash will come from. Punk will eventually need to prove that he is The Best in the World, and he'll get that moment. Perhaps at WrestleMania next year. Here, let's just walk through where we are:

* At Hell in a Cell, CM Punk gets another WWE Title shot, but he loses due to The Miz, R-Truth and Kevin Nash, who are all up in everyone's shit at the moment.

* Punk needs to get rid of these pains. He challenges Nash to a match at Vengeance. Nash wins that match, because Punk is simply biting off too much to chew, and The Miz and R-Truth tip the scales in Big Sexy's favour.

* Punk teams with Cena and The Rock at Survivor Series to face a union of all Punk's enemies -- Alberto Del Rio, Kevin Nash, The Miz, R-Truth, etc. The babyface team win there, and Cena vs. Del Rio gets some sort of TLC blow-off, where Cena wins the title again, and teases taking it into WrestleMania against The Rock. Punk leads some babyfaces into victory against The Miz, R-Truth & Nash.

* CM Punk wins the 2012 Royal Rumble, despite every conspiracy thrown against him. He teases crashing both John Cena and The Rock's party, and Daniel Bryan's moment on the SmackDown! side of things. Triple H wants to know what his choice is, but Punk says he's going to fuck with Triple H until he makes up his mind.

* At Elimination Chamber, Alberto Del Rio or The Miz wins the WWE Title again with some clever shenanigans. Maybe even some interferece from The Rock? Punk then makes his decision to go for the one-on-one shot against RAW's heel WWE Champion.

* At WrestleMania, CM Punk finally wins the WWE Title again, and proves that he is "The Best in the World."

* Extreme Rules sees CM Punk defend the WWE Title against either The Rock or John Cena (depending on who they put over). Punk retains, and looks like a beast in the ring.

* If the WWE is feeling like a gamble, 2012 would be a good time for John Cena to turn heel. He still moves a shit-ton of merchandise, but ratings and PPV buys aren't doing so crash hot when he's the champion. Cena could turn heel, threatened by CM Punk's status as "The Best in the World," and he's sick of the fans not giving him the respect he deserves for carrying the company on his back.

* Cue Cena vs. Punk for the summer of 2012 -- with Punk as the clear babyface, and Cena as the corporate heel.

Yeah, it won't happen like that -- but Punk can still produce many jizz-worthy moments of the next twelve months. And he will. Just maybe not those ones.

Hey look at that. Punk's in the main event for a title, so that takes care of that group and he's back with Cena so that takes care of the people who thought there should have been a third match/ Cena got all "fuel injected and won another title while Punk was stuck with HHH."

Poor Alberto though. Hope Cena doesn't bury him as a third wheel again.
