What is the verdict chaps? I have decided to get back into Modern Warfare 2 recently, and my performance has been very good by my standards. Comfortably and regularly getting my killstreak rewards, performing well under pressure. I've switched to the TAR 21, and it's cluttered sights made me get over my aversion to using scopes, which has helped. The AA12 shotgun as a secondary weapon can get me out of a pinch as I usually don't come out on top in a knife fight. The use of scavenger has been an important part of the strategy - the psychology that I am going to need a lot of ammunition means I am always in for the long haul. The real difference is the replenishment of flash grenades, which are now a vital part of my strategy. I wonder if I should go for stun instead.

I would be tempted to go for Black Ops II but the thing that's good about MW2 is that it works very smoothly and I remember wanting to put my head through the TV with the amount of technical problems it had.

The ones that don't let you know by rambling on in another language will then always choose a nationalistic flag and clan tag. They're also children and they do stupid voodoo things like trying to quickscope with an SMG. It's probably down to everyone playing the new stuff, and PS3s being far more common in Europe than the UK.

I don't understand how we play together and I never experience this lag.

It's more if you watch replays constantly, there's a very distinct delay (perhaps as much as a second at times) between when you initiate an action, or pull the trigger, or whatever, and when it actually does it.

To the point where I watch killcams where I unloaded on a guy, and on his screen I didn't fire a single shot. The majority of them are really split second occasions where it could be just your typical network latency. Things they really can't help.

But a stupidly large amount of deaths are from what seems to be other people literally a full second ahead of me in game. Like they're coming around a corner and shooting before I even see them on my screen, and then I'll watch their kill cam and it shows them coming around and shooting smoothly and with no problems, oftentimes without my shots even getting off even though I shot several.

As proof of this fact, while playing multiplayer split screen, I have witnessed the delay live and in action by seeing the delay from when I shoot on my screen and when it shows up on my buddy's screen.

Etc.. etc.. rinse, repeat. Then of course there's the legit lag, with people jumping around on my screen like fucking crazy, which seems to happen regardless of the color of connections in the room. Could be all green and still rubber banding.

I've been having longer MW2 sessions and still thinking about getting Black Ops 2. Having a great session, and slowly making up for hours of poor performance years ago. Then I get kicked from the middle of a decent game, no big deal. Then I fall into a trap where I am being used as a replacement player for people who are quitting in a huff. About three matches in a row, I come into a game where my team is 2000 points behind and there's a harrier, a pave low and a stealth bomber up my arse. I try to stick it out, as I said it happened for three matches, but it always gives a bit of a comedown to a nice evening, and although stats don't really matter it feels like it erases a lot of my hard work. Of course, evading these things is half the game, but there's something about coming into the middle of a match that's extra disorientating.

Yup, this is exactly it. I have a really decent connection for the US. 12MB down, and I get faster sometimes. 1 MB upload which is pretty standard in most places in the midwest at least. Around here, 12mb is EXCELLENT (which is really terrible when you consider what google fiber is doing).

From my understanding, upload speed is what's needed for a good connection. Hardwire your xbox, if you're on a router set up the QoS and funnel most upload speed to the system.

I'm getting 4 Mb/s upload speed now and it's still shocking. I know a lot of people aren't having any issues but it's seriously fucked for me and a lot of others. At some point the developers have to take responsibility. We can all deal with a little latency but this game is absurd.

I tried playing a bit again today and didn't finish a game. It's just too disheartening. It's impossible to play for me. I mainly play Domination and it's just not worthwhile when I try to flank a position, come up behind or from the side of people, and they are able to turn and kill me after my bullets tickle them a bit (or if I do manage to take out one person, I've used up a whole clip so have to re-load while his mate kills me). The number of assists I was getting after emptying half a clip into someone was getting me down as well, it sort of adds insult to injury.

Interesting, I put my PS3 in a DMZ and forwarded the ports on my connection here at home (tried it before in my own house, didn't make any difference) and now I've turned it around so now I'm getting the ridiculous lag advantage. I'm now getting 20-30 odd kills a game (though sometimes a similar number of deaths). For whatever reason, in this part of the country I get put in games with Irish and British people rather than French and Germans also.

The first map was the yacht map so I hid in the engine room so it looked like I could also be on top and no one really goes down there while 2nd controller would run into the room and then I would kill him. 5 kills in one life is fucking impossible with the crossbow in a normal game.

Working on the ballistic knife now and if there is a similar challenge that I have to unlock later then that's probably the strategy I'm going with.

Getting spawn camped in Hi-Jacked is the pits too. You can do be doing ok then get killed 5 times in about 30 seconds by some prick dancing around with a shotgun or spamming frags.

How's the lag treating you now? Also, protip if you get LMG + FMJ on there and get the building with the bedroom wall pound the other half wall with it for kills.

My fav SMG is the PDW because of the lack of recoil and big mag. For assault rifle I say M27 or AN94. Fav shotgun is the Remington. Don't do LMGs because being slow in this game = death. People on lightweight with light weapons fuck the hit detection massively, plus lag is absurd, so LMGs are a waste of time in my opinion. I like the second sniper rifle the best but crazy spawning makes sniping difficult without being a dickhead quickscoper. The amount of quickscoping in this game is very upsetting.

There's so many ways they could have dealt with quickscoping that leaving it in was intentional. I'd personally have given snipers a movement speed penalty for the ghillie suit and the big gun on top of fixing quickscoping.

Also I could use LMGs quite a bit in MW2 but found them useless in Blops. Maybe it was the grip+quicker ADS you could have on the RPD which made it into a death machine. They don't have a massive benefit over a assault rifle, I mostly got into them to punish myself out of bad reload discipline.

SMGs are massively over-powered, there are plenty of long sight-line maps that should see LMGs raping them, especially if you're stationary and crouched, but SMGs are far too stable over range so the speed advantage and hit detection issue with speedy movement means they outgun almost everything. The M27 wins out because it's this games ACR with the zero recoil. Stick Toughness on and the only thing beating you is lag.

And yeah sniper rifles should be very heavy and have enormous recoil if fired standing. I hate the fact quickscoping is embraced since it's essentially an awful glitch of the auto-aim mechanic.

By the way, there's easily 20x times the proportion of arseholes playing on XBox than PS3. Don't know why it is but it's true.

It's absolutely true in my experience. 360 is just the mass market choice in the UK and US and then there's a magnetic effect where the further unwashed join up because their friends are on it.

Sniper rifles have a very wide hip fire radius so the bullet can randomly go anywhere in that circle. Quickscoping works because the aim tightens up to that central point while it's still coming up to the eye. The simple thing would be to randomly set the central point to somewhere in that radius, so a scope aim would be as random as a hip shot until it's manually adjusted. This wouldn't penalise normal snipers at all but would eliminate the benefit of quickscoping. At least they still deserve a chance firing at point blank range but it's so annoying to see them try their ~skillzzz~

Team Fortress 2 has the solution where as soon as you lift your scope you do a weak shot, and you need to have been looking down the scope for a few seconds to be able to do a full power shot, which is good but wouldn't suit the gun nut po faced CoD system.

SMGs are just so good because, ultimately, so much of the combat is short range, and the long range combat is never that long range. LMG damage doesn't drop off over range, assault rifle has a drop off at a far distance where it takes 4 bullets over 3, and then SMGs have a tighter dropoff, but it's never much of a disadvantage, and the quicker motion and aiming more than makes up for it. The UMP45 and silencer in CoD was deadly - Silencers were supposed to make the damage dropoff happen at a shorter distance but this was negliable with the UMP, so you were getting a silenced weapon with no downside.

I can adapt pretty easily to both. Most of my classes have an AR and dual pistols for when ghost comes up. Very often I would get caught shooting down a UAV, but with ghost I can stay in a controlled area while still being off the radar.

Smoke is ridiculously useful, but I rarely play objective games unless I have a full squad.

I think Ghost is useful since people are keeping their eye on the map when the UAV is up. UAVs don't come up as much as before the first patch obviously but you can surprise people. Obviously when the ridiculous lag effects are taken into account at times this can still be negated, but often I get surprised by people with Ghost on from my own point of view.

I also generally like being a sneaky bastard who know one can find. I like having a suppressor plus Ghost so that the other team, if they aren't communicating, just see their chums disappearing off the map and start to get worried. It always appalls/fascinates me how many times I can sneak up on two guys playing split-screen and still get them both when they're fairly close together sniping on the likes of Drone or Turbine.

I've been banging on about it on here as well. It makes the game unplayable for me a lot of the time. If it weren't for my mates getting me an XBox to play it with them on, there's no way I'd still be on this game. It's absurd they still haven't attempted to patch this. What makes it worse is that we STILL get matched with people from all round Europe most of the time. 6 of us played a clan from Italy and it finished something like 75-24 because they were flying around the screen like lightning and shooting before they came round corners. The killcams were pathetic. I got killed by a guy who from my point of view I had found side on and who ran past me while I was shooting him. From my end I just died and assumed I'd been shot by a sniper behind me, then the killcam showed the guy turning and nailing me.

Back to the gun talk, specifically LMG's.

Maybe it suits my playstyle, but I seem to destroy when using the LSAT. I didn't add any attachments until FMJ. I was able to get 2x triple kills in the same game probably..... 4 times in a row last night? Beyond that, I noticed a significant improvement in K/D. I am level 32, still consider myself a HUGE noob to this title, but damn that gun is great.

Play Ground War and Hardpoint almost exclusively. The LSAT has given me a renewed faith in MP :D

Yeah I've seen that happen with one of the guys I play with. Now that I have the X-Box I'm usually playing with 4-5 other friends and one guy is ridiculous, so he sometimes runs VSAT, Dogs, Swarm. We all run VSATs, I usually go Sentry Gun, AGR or Stealth Chopper depending on the map, then Warthog, Doggies or VTOL depending on how I feel about it.

What usually happens when you get Dogs or Swarm anyway is that people start leaving. When Dogs and Swarm are both on at once, see ya.

Having maximum AGRs or maximum Sentry Guns on the map is probably funnier.

I wish I'd know about this, damnit. I dug out MW2 this weekend and made a push to prestige, which took me a good few hours. I quite enjoyed it and my standard of performance was pretty decent, although I started to flag towards the end the more experimental and impatient I got. Also on Sunday I saw a lot more people hacking with messages for aim assist things coming on screen, which seems to be a hangover of the SOny security compromise.

I was wondering whether to pick up MW3 or think about dropping £20 on Black Ops 2. I personally enjoyed Black Ops more than MW2, but it was a lot less stable (especially on PS3) than MW2 was and seemed to have more lag problems. Any opinions? I'm also not that interested in single player, I never bothered to finish that on Black Ops 1.

Edit: Looking through the thread, I can see that a lot of the BO1 problems are still there. I get matched with a lot of Europeans in MW2, but the games still run flawlessly most of the time.

Probably. The most common problem is distinguishing red from green, so they need a different set of colours for the gamertags.

Seems weird they would consider colour blindness on one platform and not another, though.

I got MW3, the new killstreak system seems interesting, and it's nice to have a new perk system after so long.

I am doing pretty poorly as usual, but I feel I can blame the new maps, vs people who have been playing for 18 months. I have come out on top a few times, but eventually if I loose my cool or concentration I just start to run into everything. I have been thinking about my perks and what not, I might try and go SMG for a while as it occurs to me now that I spend so much time meeting people face to face, I should be working on coming on to them from the side, and learning the maps accordingly.

I wonder how the matchmaking works on this because I was up against this Al Pacino chap who would get about 30 kills a match and I was on the opposing team to him about 7 times in a row until he left. I'm sure he had to leave and evaluate his life and add up how much he had spent to play because he was so awesome.

I decided just to go back to MW2. Although I'm new to the maps, I don't know if I liked them as much. I don't want to put the time in to learning them when I can just stick with MW2 until Ghosts comes out.

Will be moving on to Mass Effect 3 multiplayer soon

I thought the maps in MW3 were probably the best map set out of any game. Mission and Village are two favorites.
