UFC 152 boom or bust for longshot Belfort
By Chad Dundas

Vitor Belfort has always been an all-or-nothing kind of guy.

Even by the volatile standards of mixed martial arts -- a sport where nearly everyone eventually gets a slice of humble pie -- Belfort's ride has been a special kind of roller coaster. One chock-full of skyscraper highs and particularly crushing lows.

Follow us on Twitter

Don't miss a moment of the latest MMA coverage from around the world. Follow us on Twitter and stay informed. Join »

For a short time during the mid 1990s, he might have been the best in the world until UFC 15, when Randy Couture drew the world a map of how to beat him, and his legend has never really recovered.

Belfort went on to become champion, but he's also played the goat on numerous occasions. He's been called unbeatable, only to have his flaws exposed again and again. He's dished out some "Ultimate Knockouts" -- his 44-second blitzing of Wanderlei Silva at UFC Brazil comes to mind -- but last year also found himself on the receiving end of one of the sport's most electric KOs at the left foot of Anderson Silva.

At this rate, when it finally comes time to tell the story of Belfort's near 16-year run in MMA, he may be best remembered as a fighter who didn't quite live up to that early hype.

Unless … unless …

Do we even dare to dream it?

It would be disingenuous to imply that Belfort could erase the many past disappointments of his career with a single victory over Jon Jones. However, accepting a short-notice shot at Jones' light heavyweight title at UFC 152 does give him a once-in-a-lifetime chance to strike a resounding blow for his legacy.

All he has to do is pull off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history.

Oddsmakers have made this the ultimate boom-or-bust opportunity for Belfort, installing "The Phenom" as the kind of prohibitive underdog we seldom see in MMA anymore.

Certainly not in the sport's premier organization.

Certainly not in a pay-per-view main event.

The 7-to-1 odds against Belfort (and the -1,000 betting line in favor of Jones) aren't necessarily historic, but as the marquee bout on such a high-profile card, you have to do some digging to find their equal. Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre was a comparable favorite against Matt Serra at UFC 69; ditto for Fedor Emelianenko when he took on Fabricio Werdum in Strikeforce in 2010.

Spoiler alert: The only reason anyone remembers those odds is obviously because Serra and Werdum pulled off unbelievable upsets. Had they not, well, they'd merely be the answers to trivia questions now. Or worse, the punch lines of jokes.

Belfort faces a similar situation against Jones.

Nobody, for example, remembers that Dan Hardy was a 5-to-1 underdog against GSP at UFC 111 or that Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos went off at an amazing -2,500 against Jan Finney on the undercard of the Emelianenko-Werdum fight. Hardy and Finney were dogs who didn't bark, and their golden opportunities were quickly forgotten.

If Belfort wins, it'll be one for the history books. He can punch his ticket into every celebratory photo slideshow, retrospective and end-of-the-year awards piece on every MMA website worth its salt. He'll also be the UFC's 205-pound champion, which would be a pretty nice perk for a guy who doesn't even fight in that weight class anymore. Fans who were either optimistic or foolhardy enough to pay to tune in to UFC 152 can likewise brag to their friends that they were watching the night Belfort shocked the world.

If he loses, he'll disappear into the ether alongside Hardy and Finney and every other failed longshot matchmakers have drummed up when they couldn't find anyone else to fight their dominant champions. Belfort will go back to the middleweight division as a slightly more tarnished version of his already tarnished self and "that time Vitor fought Bones" will simply be another of the sport's many cautionary tales.

Safe to say Belfort already knows as much as he cares to about going for it all and coming up empty.

"I was driving off the freeway, I had just landed and called him and told him what Sonnen said and he f***ing laughed," White said in describing Jones' initial reaction to the Sonnen offer. "It wasn't like, 'Whoa f***ing this might be the biggest mistake of my f***ing career.' I thought we had a f***ing fight. He was laughing and was like 'Alright I'm going to call my team and call you back in a little while.' And then they call back and it was a completely different f***ing story. It was the genius Greg Jackson that talked him out of the fight. Talked him out of fighting Chael Sonnen on eight days f***ing notice, yet fighting Vitor Belfort off a full f***ing camp."Dana sounds like a huge idiot there.

Next Big Thing

It's basically Dana realizing he still has to promote Jones's fights and that he fucked up by railroading his next big superstar. Now he's just going to put it all on Greg Jackson talking him out of it. It's not like Jones told him okay I'll do it and then called back later and backed out. Jones saying "Alright I'm going to call my team and call you back in a little while," should have given him some indication that it wasn't all a lock and while I'm not the biggest Greg Jackson fan, look at his track record coaching fighters. Why wouldn't Jones listen to his coach over the promoter?

Next Big Thing
09-16-2012, 03:32 PM
Jones should just embrace being the bad guy. If he does that and continues to eat his opponent's hearts he'll be alright. Some of Nike's most marketable stars are also the most "hated" by fans in their respective sports (Kobe, LeBron, Vick).

I was reffering to this sentence "....Talked him out of fighting Chael Sonnen on eight days f***ing notice, yet fighting Vitor Belfort off a full f***ing camp."

I think any fighter would want a full training camp against their opponent, although when I made that post I see I quoted the wrong paragraph, i meant to quote this one:

"Ok, we were gonna fight Dan Henderson, guy's got f***ing knockout power, great wrestling, a good chin, tough f***ing guy. Now here's Chael Sonnen on eight days notice and he's a f***ing 185 pounder, coming in with no camp whatsoever. And you heard what they said: he's a southpaw. Vitor Belfort's a f***ing southpaw. And hits f***ing harder, and is faster and more explosive. So you're gonna f***ing say no to him on eight days notice but fight [Vitor]. It's so stupid that it gets me angry."He could just be in promotion mode to promote the fight.

I just read his Wiki page and his bio on Jackson MMA's website. How did Greg Jackson become such a force as a coach/trainer? His bio just said that he studied martial arts forever and then combined a bunch of shit into his own martial art in 1992. I'm not entirely sure on this so don't quote me, but I think he first got real attention because he trained Diego Sanchez since he was a kid and Diego is Mr. Ultimate Fighter. Rashad Evans and GSP joining up gave him more credibility and he's kind of been coasting since.

Dana is right when he says Jackson is more of a politician/ business man though. Jackson's "martial art" that he developed is bullshit. He had great coaches on his staff like Mike Von Arsdale (wrestling) and Winklejohn (Muay Thai). Then he created a network with Renzo Gracie, Grudge Gym in Denver (Shane Carwin), Tri-Star (GSP) and Phil Nurse (Muay Thai Coach-God). Those guys do the real training, bu Jackson gets the credit because his name was on the door and he does the most interviews.

Again, that's just my recollection mixed with a little bit of personal opinion. Not sure if it's entirely accurate.

Sweet. I love Diego Sanchez.

Still weird because Diego wasn't even "the star" of TUF1 and while he has had a good run in UFC he hasn't ever been "the face of MMA".

True. But Rashad joined Jackson's after he won TUF 2 so I think that got him some extra credibility too.

It's kind of funny that Swanson got KO of the Night and Jones got Submission of the Night after Dana trashed Jacksons and called him a sport killer.

I screamed liek a little bitch when Belfort got the armbar and woke my mates baby up.

Kinda pissed off that the crowd booed DMJ/Benavidez b/c I thought it was FOTN (or Grant/Dunham)

That guy who Hamill fought was fucking garbage, like a rly shit Phil Baroni.

I would not have booed the Flyweight fight, but it wasn't a Fight Of The Night contender. While both men were fast and technical, it never looked like either of them would hurt the other standing. Fights are made more exciting by the element of danger that was missing.

I hope Dodson wins his title eliminator because a fight between him and DMJ would be fireworks. Dodson would make a good champion with his charisma as well, although that would mean another title for Greg "Sport Killer" Jackson's stable.
