Because I couldn't just let it go, I had to go and write a follow-up rant in regards to the fallout from MoS:

Movie was meh.
-The entire city is shown in ruins with whole skyscrapers coming down in battle. There should have been tens if not hundreds of thousands of deaths but everyone is like "SUPERMAN SAVED THE DAY! WHATEVS!!!"
-Loopy is spot on with the Tornado scene.
-Why were there no natural births on Krypton anymore? Why was Kal-El the only one?
-That open/empty pod in the ship? Yah, we can revisit it in a sequel but not even a hint or other reference to it?
-In one scene Lois Lane chugs a glass of whisky/bourbon and in the next her line is "What if I have to tinkle?" Is that a reference to something from the comics? It was jarring to hear "tinkle" as odd as that sounds.
-The family of four that Zod is trying to kill at the end....are they ok n stuff?

Earth is not New Krypton, so I'd reason Superman did save the day.
Other details makes me think you simply weren't interested enough to care about them.
Frank Drebin
07-07-2013, 04:50 PM
Right, so just keep those details to yourself then because I must be some meathead who didn't read every bloody bit of literature going into the movie and wasn't genuinely interested in getting answers to my questions in order to better understand what I just saw. No way could I have possibly overlooked a detail that prevented me from understanding one of the concepts I pointed out. I simply didn't care and wasn't interested to begin with. Yeah.

Still can't answer any of my questions. Probably were legit gripes that can't be explained away. Movie was Meh.

I'm not convinced having them answered would do anything to improve the movie for you, so ask somebody else who would be. Later.
Frank Drebin
07-07-2013, 06:06 PM
Thats the whole reason I asked them in the first place. Its not your place to determine the ramifications if your answers will shine a light on this movie for me or not. They might though.
You should be trying to show a foreigner the way and not blowing him off when he asks for directions.

Your guess is correct, I dug the movie. Any gripes I have are pretty different from the other stuff on the net.

That's cool, doesn't seem to be an issue.

I'll answer your questions, Frank
.
Movie was meh.
-The entire city is shown in ruins with whole skyscrapers coming down in battle. There should have been tens if not hundreds of thousands of deaths but everyone is like "SUPERMAN SAVED THE DAY! WHATEVS!!!"
I think this is the result of both Snyder and Goyer not having an exact idea of what they wanted to do with the story, so, instead of seeing Superman save people and build a reputation before taking on Zod, we jump into destruction. I agree with you on this.
-Loopy is spot on with the Tornado scene.
Disagree. Felt this was one of the better, more emotional scenes in the movie. But I can see people finding it cheesy. Hated that Clark essentially disowned his parents prior to the death happening. So stupid.
-Why were there no natural births on Krypton anymore? Why was Kal-El the only one?
Don't remember if it was explained, but I'd reckon the leaders of Krypton felt genetically creating soldiers and scientist predisposed was best in continually developing their society. Also, this was supposed to make Clark an outcast on both Krypton and Earth, but neither was really expanded on, outside of some flashback scenes. It was a good idea that was never delved into.
-That open/empty pod in the ship? Yah, we can revisit it in a sequel but not even a hint or other reference to it?
I don't even know if they will expand on it in a sequel. Feel like it was just Snyder being cheeky with fans with zero intent on actually doing naything about it in the next film.
-In one scene Lois Lane chugs a glass of whisky/bourbon and in the next her line is "What if I have to tinkle?" Is that a reference to something from the comics? It was jarring to hear "tinkle" as odd as that sounds.
Just ineffective writing?
-The family of four that Zod is trying to kill at the end....are they ok n stuff?
Who cares, Frank? The point of the scene was clearly to show how conflicted Clark was in killing Zod, a man he barely knew, who was the second to last man from his home planet, a planet he had zero emotional attachment to, and spent all of five minutes learning about in the Spark Notes program on the vessel by digital dad, Jor-El. Get your head out your ass, Frank, and be a fanboy, accepting this as what it is!!!
But yeah, I agree you with a lot of what you said. Meh.
Frank Drebin

(This is how you respond, Kylax. Take notes from Damian Rey)
You are right in that its a comic book movie, and that I just need to suspend disbelief maybe a little more than I normally would. Thing is, I let lots of stuff go in the Batman Trilogy, but felt better about ignoring some of it. (Joker has thousands of pounds of explosives hidden and strategically set up in the hospital?)
Things just felt very uneven in this one. I also hate loose ends not being tied up or at the very least referenced after taking center stage for a time which is why the outcome of the family bothered me. We were supposed to care if they live or die, then they just dropped it like someone accidentally cut a shot or piece of dialogue.
Thanks for explaining things and providing a different spin on things for me.
Damian Rey
07-14-2013, 03:19 PM
That last line about accepting it was supposed to be taken as a joke. Nolan's films spent a lot of time developing characters, making them and their actions believable, even with something like Joker's bombing of the hospital, and developed everything within the story to somehow work and become a cohesive aspect of the film without being too over the top.
Man of Steel didn't do any of that at all. A member on Flixter wrote a review I liked that stated they felt like they were watching the best scenes out of three seperate films thrown into one. That's a pretty solid sum of what we got with Man of Steel.
Tons of small gems, spread across 2.5 hours of convoluted inconsistency.

There's a difference between arguing and discussing and debating. Arguing, yeah, that can turn really ugly. But there's nothing wrong with debating and discussing something with someone who doesn't share your opinion. Talking with people who constantly agree is boring.

Skip - Everyone has their own opinion on movies so its fun to talk about them. I like hearing what everyone thinks and how they arrived at their conclusions. I might learn a few new things. When it pertains to movies, maybe I missed something. It could have been in a movie I loved or hated. Maybe it puts a different spin on things.
I wanted to get some answers to plot holes I saw about this movie. That was it. Kalyx's response was so douchy I could smell the stank puss through my monitor.

I pick and choose what discussions are worth having. Based on your initial remarks I figured there isn't much we would actually gather from each other. Serious Business, right? I've had this rodeo a million times - it's kinda my thing. I know which discussion is worth having. You may not agree with me not entertaining this one, but none of us are really out to change and minds anyway.
I read your thoughts on the movie, I get them, moving on. I'm more than willing to riff on about other topics since you seem hard up on engaging me in something. Just don't feel offended that I'm not taking a seat at this table. Believe it or not this isn't the only place I have debates on. Sometimes, just sometimes, I take a rain check and move on.
So for the last time; let this go. Tell you what, next time you have some thoughts on some superhero movie I'll be the first to riff with ya on it. Happy?
