Heroes is okay for a stripped-down MOBA experience. Played a bunch of the Alpha, doesn't seem "deep enough" to hold my attention

Dota 2 takes a lot of time to understand. You can play a hundred games and still be a noob. In fact, you -will- still be a noob at a hundred games. I have almost 400 games and I still feel like a noob even though I have a pretty good grasp on things. There are just certain advanced tactics that you won't wrap your head around for a while.
That's what I love about the game. There are so many heroes, so many items, and so many combinations of those, that every game is different. Every hero has multiple ways they can play, and multiple strategies used to counter them. When you finally figure something out on your own, or make a game-swinging play, it's awesome. Love games that don't hold your hand, and force you to figure it out yourself, or in the case of Dota, watch other people play so you can understand what you're doing wrong.

Losing isn't a big deal at all. I mean, I typically play unranked so there's that. But even still, the matchmaking algorithm generally pits you against players of comparable level and w/e. I get more frustrated at myself for being out of position and getting Pudge hooked etc than actually angry at the Pudge player. SELF-BETTERMENT
plus it's sooooooo soothing to make fun of the Peruvians. This cannot be stressed enough.

Ya, I am really critical of my own mistakes. Only thing that pisses me off about the community sometimes is how little everyone appreciates a job well done. Sometimes you'll meet some people who understand the game enough to know when you did something that was exceptional, but it's like every noob in the game thinks you have to be a pro at the game at all times, and nobody is impressed when you do your heroes job correctly or pull off game-changing plays.
Have experienced this a lot lately as Omniknight. Do your job, and nobody notices it. Don't cast a spell one time on a guy that needed it when he was diving farther than he should have anyways, and suddenly you're the worst thing in the world and you're the reason the team is losing instead of the carry that's fed 5-12 the whole game.

I haven't even played since Beta started tbh... like I said, Alpha was fun but it felt like a stripped-down experience. There are definitely positives to having 15-20 minute games, I just prefer the more nuanced take that Dota 2 does with the genre
That all said... have to see if I still have HotS installed. I cleaned out a ton of my hard drive in anticipation of installing a new SSD so I might have to re-download it
Requiem
04-09-2015, 03:53 PM
Is HotS free to play, or should I not give a shit about it.
LoL is "freemium" which I hate. Tried playing it, couldn't get into it because it seemed too simplistic, and I hated that they cycle through 'free champions' because I'd rather just have access to all of them so that everyone is on equal ground. Hate the idea that I could end up playing against people with OP heroes that not everyone has access to.
So anyways, what is HotS' business model?
road doggy dogg
04-09-2015, 03:59 PM
I haven't read too much about the game and am just going off of my Alpha experience, but it does have a hero rotation but is also free to play. Every time you win a game or do objectives or w/e you get currency to unlock heroes. Doesn't seem a terribly high cost to unlock most heroes either. I think throughout playing the Alpha very very very sparingly I accumulated enough currency to unlock 3 different heroes.
Can use the currency on skins etc too. And, unlike Dota, the HotS skins look fucking amazing. Some of them are incredible.
Not sure how much of that will change, if the hero rotation was just intended for testing/balancing purposes in development, etc, or if that will be in the final game or what

Meh, doesn't really sound like my kind of thing. Think Dota2 is enough for me. And I like Dota2's item sets. I think they look snazzy. Not every hero has them, or even has cool ones, but a LOT of the heroes have some really badass sets.

04-09-2015, 04:09 PM

I have conceded that in order for me to enjoy the game at this point it will only be with a couple people. Dont' ever see me doing the whole full raiding guild thing again.
Overall I enjoyed the expansion a lot too.
Garrisons I didn't mind so much, but I don't like the precedent that it's isolating people more and more. For better or worse, I enjoy going into an area and seeing tons of other players rather than NPCs. World feels so empty sometimes.
For that reason I'm really looking forward to the Class Halls (or w/e they're called) in Legion. Will be cool if some of the better players of your class are there and you can bounce questions and shit off them instead of just tabbing out and reading Icyveins etc

WotLK was really the end of any of the content I think they set out to do. Everything else has pretty much been a rehash of pre-existing crap.
I get it though. I mean. The game had 12 million active subscriptions. You don't just take that number and say, "Well guys, we did what we set out to do. Let's wrap 'er up!"
No, you gotta keep churning out content for people. I don't fault them for Cata and beyond being relatively meh, I think they just got too big for their britches at that point and had an OHSHIT moment and had to scramble to make compelling content.
Granted, the game itself hasn't drastically gotten worse or anything (MoP under-rated expansion) but lore-wise anything post-WotLK was just MEH so it makes it harder to invest in

That's your group, it'll never be replicated. Nothing will most likely ever top the amount of cohesion that early-WoW required and manifested. I'm just stubborn that maybe one of these expansions will bring that back for me someday. I assumed that everyone would settle down and be more into WoW, it turned out different. Don't blame anyone from a graphical stance, but damn I'll never forget BC/Wrath days. Glad I didn't take them for granted

I remember kicking a Pala healer out of the guild because they could NOT get the concept of moving away from the god damn fireballs at the 2nd boss of Zul Aman. We would wipe over and over. Gave him a week to read/brush up but he still kept fucking doing it.
A few people quit, saying it was BS that he was kicked, but when you are in a progression guild and you aren't progressing, you get rid of the problem. Brought on a new Pala healer and cleared the whole damn raid the next time we ran.
What was your all time favorite raid that you actually participated in? Going for both location AND boss (they do NOT have to be related).
I LOVED the whole feel of Karazhan from start to finish. The atmosphere, music, etc. I was also very fond of ZA when it opened. Could be incredibly challenging at times.
Can't remember the dragon in Kara, but that is easily one of my more favorite fights. The one with the 3 different portals that certain players would have to absorb inbetween DPS'ing. The Lich King fight was fun too.
Favorite raid of all time for me was Mount Hyjal I think. Just seemed so fast/chaotic with all the waves of enemies and then BOOM, boss outta nowhere!!!!
Which one was the one where you had to protect the Tree of Life? That one was good too - been too long and I can't remember all the details of all the raids I did.

Karazhan and Ulduar were the two best designed raids IMO
My favourite was probably MC simply because it was all such a new concept to me (even if the raid itself was very vanilla) and the concept of tackling these giant monsters with 39 other people was just sofa king cool and yeah.

Never got to do 40 man raids with an actual group. Revisited them much later of course, and I could only imagine how epic it felt.
I remember watching chat go by and/or watching friends do the raids. Seemed like it took longer to get everyone together than the actual raid. That seemed hellish.

Oh yeah. They were utter shitshows. That was part of the charm of it though, I guess.

Always loved the dudes in Northrend who would yell "I'LL EAT YOUR HEARRRRRTTT!" and then charged you.
Actually all of Northrend pretty much rules. If Northrend were real, I'd go live there.

Cataclysm had some good parts, I know that expansion is what made a lot of people leave, but farming that rainbow ore was pretty soothing to me(Pyrite).

That and Storm Peaks. Even though much of the terrain was "wasted" I thought it just had this incredible epic sense of mystery and awe

Grizzly Hills had that one quest along the shoreline(east) that led into that tomb. Enjoyed the Rastafarian ghosts and all

LOL!
First time I went to Northrend I started in Borean Tundra b/c Rogue + leatherworking. That was the ONLY time I started in that zone.
Even the 1st 5 man dungeon in Northrend rules. Don't remember it right now, but it was sooooooooooooooo fun.
Seriously considering downloading a "private" version Sixx told me about just to do Northrend shit.

SSC was my favorite raid boss wise. Kara and ZG (25 man raid in Vanilla. Was the first big raid. I think it was called ZG) were my 2 favorite all around raids ever.

When does the expac hit? I will get it, get hooked, beat the pissed out of the first raid, and then sell my account. Unless I find a super cool guild to keep me interested.

Nice. Hopefully the class hall thing they add is cool. Enjoyed the garrison thing more than most. Really liked leveling my people up for them to get me gear.

They are currently in Alpha and I listened to a lot of the beginning story with the Demon Hunter starting area. It is a must for me to play out the expansion story.

A welcome change to the zones you travel to. You can choose which zone to start off in, BUT you have to stay there until completion

What is your gamer tag?
Suppose i wanted to start playing this again. Do i have to start at level 1? How lost would i be? If i buy Legion, does that give me all the expansions too or do i have to buy everything all over again?
Ruien

If you buy Legion you don't need to buy all the expansions. It comes with everything. You can instant level 1 character to level 100.
You won't be lost. They took out a lot of the buttons. My toolbars are half filled and I use maybe 9 buttons for fighting. It has been simplified.
Honestly, save your money. I plan on raiding to gear up and just sell my to on again for a profit. It's just Burning Crusade part 2.
