God forbid small developers try to be creative, and craft unique visuals and gameplay.

I still do not understand this problem you have with indie developers. If the gameplay is legit great, then what is the problem? Are developers just not allowed to experiment with different art styles and gameplay ideas? Are they supposed to just endlessly make new shooters, rpgs and espirts games?

Fuck that. Ori and the Blind Forest is more beautiful and striking than a lot of games out there. And it plays fantastic. Limbo is more creepy and unnerving than most horror games. And it plays fantastic. I could go on. I've been an advocate for these types of games since they staryed showing up on live arcade. Not because I'm some pretentious hipster, but because its creativity unbound by publisher bullshit, and I appreciate the unique ideas and visuals that said unbridled creativity brings.

I love me some indie goodness, but MS's whole theme was ULTRA REAL 4K HD EXCLUSIVE 4K WORLD PREMEIRE 4K TERRAFLOPS EXCLUSIVE and then they show a bunch of indie games that don't really need 4k to shine. I found it funny from that perspective, but otherwise agree with you

I break down games to their gameplay, all the time. You know this. No interest in story modes, don't care for 'narrative intentions'. I'm a total nazi about this. Life is Strange; is ass. It does nothing for me. It fails at its own goal. If you set aside gameplay refinement to be a narrative driven game, fine, but I youtubed LiS and it's bollocks.

Telling me you youtubed Life is Strange does not explain your disdain for indy games a whole. So what if a few of these games geg overhyped, and don't get called out on their flaws? That doesn't mean that a lot of these games don't deserve the praise they get. I already listed a couple examples, but I've played a plethora of games with great controls and fun ideas. I guess I just don't understand what specifically you have a problem with, in terms of gameplay.

I've never been one of those 'all games are the same, where's the originality' types. I believe in refinement of conventions and mixing/merging of gameplay tropes. Pretty much every traditional game-type has been innovated and the final frontier is refinement and fresh perspectives, just like Hollywood. Just like music. Those great leaps and innovative gameplay of the 80s to early 2000s, that's done with. And I accept that. From here genres diverge into sub-genres and we find games that speak our individual language.

My issue is while you can highlight a few nice indy games, I'm unimpressed by what a generation who grew up gaming has produced so far. This should be the punk era of gaming, but it seems we dodged that and it went straight to post-modernism development. Minimalist, 'quirky' design that aim to spark conversations rather than entertain. An art exhibit where there's like... a fucking moldy bread on a basketball or some shit? That's post-modernism in art. It killed art and actual painters and sculptors have been trying to get this word out for decades now.

Now I wanna be clear that I'm not attacking games that are atypical or irreverent by design, nor am I 'missing the point'. I completely understand what something like Journey or Flower was going for. They just come off to me as pompous games. I can certainly accept them as 'interactive entertainment', but supporters do not. You may remember my old issues with why people reject Casual Games as a term. This was in line with my feelings for No Man's Sky. And in fact; I believe much of its criticisms stem from the fact that people were expecting a Core Game out of what was obviously a casual Interactive Experience. People misidentified what kind of game it was and he (lead designer) suffered for it.

I'm oldschool. I look toward the technical design of gameplay. If something is dressed up in a very atmospheric and interesting visual design, but is at the end of a day a badly paced 2D platformer with awkward difficulty spikes, I simply can't look past that. I don't give it points for having gorgeous visuals. An in-joke I have with Khuntry and the guys when we check out some pompous interview with an indy hack is asking, "I wonder what happens when I press the A button?" This loss of craftsmanship is a big issue for me and it doesn't help that game journos are no better. Kotaku's recent coverage of that awesome looking DBZ fighter is laughable. Writer clearly didn't know what to talk about other than it seems like MvC.

I am 100% unimpressed with the Dead Space series. Looks good. Controls are functional. Unimpressed. I can't past it being a ho-hum western horror game.

Just watched the Ubisoft conference.

I agree it was probably their best one yet. Took a page out of the Sony book. Show more gameplay & trailers, less bullshit.

I'm about 90% in on that Skull & Bones game. Just give me a story/campaign to go with it and you can take my money.

AC: Origins was cool for 30 seconds. Then they skip to the game play and it's just like Ghost Recon: Wildlands. Send bird-drone ahead to enemy base, tag enemies, plan attack, conquer, etc. Sounds like I'll grab it on the cheap like I did with Syndicate.

Starlink is an interesting concept. Dunno if they're trying to capitalize off of No Man's Sky or this is their experiment into the toy video game market like Skylanders and LEGO.

Already had FarCry 5 pre-ordered and I like what I saw.

Some stuff announced after the Spotlight show for the Switch version of Rocket League.

Rocket League is scheduled to release during the holiday season this year. It will contain all of the arenas and modes that currently exist and feature cross-platform multiplayer to get into games with everybody else. For Switch-exclusive stuff, it'll have local wireless multiplayer for groups with several Switches, Mario and Luigi hat car toppers, and some exclusive cars that weren't shown.
