2k have revealed details about the upcoming WWE 2k18 and <a href="https://www.gamespot.com/articles/wwe-2k18-devs-detail-revamped-story-upgraded-visua/1100-6451358/">Gamespot have the skinny</a> on what they entail. The headlines are that 8 man matches are now in, a 'revamped graphics engine' and changes to both career and universe modes. But let's look at the details, because they say this every year.

Unfortunately, the developers weren't able to share too many details about the game in its present state, but they did give us a rundown on the general features and upgrades coming up.

I mean, the game is a whole 3 months away, why would there be in-depth details?!

With the recent brand split and roster shuffling resulting in some majors changes to the different WWE divisions, such as RAW, Smackdown, NXT, and the 205 Live brands--many storylines and plans for the weekly shows went through some substantial updates. Because of this, the WWE Universe mode in 2K18--which is a simulation of the televised WWE schedule--has evolved out of the static storytelling of its predecessors. Moving away from the format of one pay-per-view every four weeks of live-shows from previous years, the general progression in 2K18's changes to Universe mode intends to be much more fluid and organic, featuring a lot of surprises to match the current pace of WWE's TV and PPV schedule.

I think they say that Universe will be more organic every year and it just is the same with a different skin. Will this be the year? I'm betting... No

Presentation was one of the key areas that the developers--a collaboration between Visual Concepts and Yuke's--wanted to focus on. For starters, WWE 2K18 will feature an updated graphics engine, which the developers claim went through a substantial rewriting process over the last two years. It now features dithered rendering, new skin shaders, real time reflections, and physically based rendering--all of which will add greater elements of realism to the characters, while also giving a much stronger atmosphere to the many environments. From the technical demo we saw, which unfortunately featured the new lighting and post-processing effects paired with older character models from 2K17, the game does look noticeably improved over the last title.

3 months from release and they don't have new character models for this new engine yet. That seems <em>really</em> promising.

Working with the NBA 2K team, which is known for its authentic commentary quality, WWE 2K18 brings in Michael Cole, Byron Saxton, and Corey Graves as the lead commentators. To give it a more organic feel, the three commentators were given extra time to work, and also had the chance to perform in the same room as their co-commentators to lend the recording process more of a natural feel.

Removing JBL and King is a bonus since they were phoned in, so this should mean Coles lines are re-recorded this time. Hopefully should be better.

Building from the last game, My Career returns and will feature a more serious story. As the last game was criticized for its somewhat sprawling nature, the next attempt at building your character's career will be more concise and narrative-driven than its predecessor. The main reason for this different approach to the story is the inclusion of the brand new Road To Glory mode, one of the new forms of online content for the My Career campaign. While the developers were tight-lipped on mentioning just what this offers, they stated that My Career's story is the lead up to Glory mode, which is the end-game of sorts for My Career.

As long as this means no more having to hold a belt for 365 days, I'm all for it.

In addition to Promo Engine 2.0--an upgraded and more accurate take on the wrestler's trash-talking dialog system from 2K17--the fighters now go through a brand new progression system which yield unlockable upgrades and perks after matches. To encourage flexibility, the upcoming roster has been increased over the last year, and is set to be the largest in series history. Added to this, the developers working on a brand new character archetype system known as ‘fighting styles.' Each wrestler in the roster is set up with a particular archetype, like high-flyer or giant, which reflects their physique, moveset, and physical prowess in the ring. This is not only to reflect the variety in the roster, but also to give players diving into Create-A-Wrestler more defined archetypes to attach themselves to.

The promo engine was total garbage last year, but the fighter styles sound promising.

One area the developers were aware was a bit too complicated was the core grappling and submissions system. To remedy this, key parts of the submission system have been reworked and overhauled entirely, making it easier to learn and use. In addition to an overhauled dragging system (the technique of using opponent's' momentum against them), a new carrying system has been introduced, which allows players to pick up their opponents, leading to a variety of different moves like power bombs, cradles, and environmental moves. Moreover, there’s also a new ‘position feeding' mechanic, which allows players to ‘sell' their position in the match, launching a move from a groggy or ground position. The developers claim that the grappling systems are more dynamic, leading to a greater level of possibilities compared to the comparatively static system from the previous game.

The carrying part sounds like Smackdown V Raw where they added in moving powerbombs and junk. Nothing like old features being sold as new again!

Moreover, there will be many different options to play around with, including mixed-gender wrestling and other options such as interactive items and win conditions, which can be added in the new create-a-match feature.

Speaking of old features as new... Create a match is finally back.

While it's disconcerting to not have seen much of the game, considering the game is scheduled for release on October 17, they state more info is coming soon. With the reveal of Kurt Angle as the pre-order bonus last week, we've still much to learn about WWE 2K18, including our first actual look at the new visuals in action, but the features they have detailed are an interesting start, which will no doubt make the next game feel like a bigger step forward for the series.

Disconcerting is an understatement...

We'll see how this plays out, but it sounds like another WWE 2k release to me!

They usually don't show looks of the game until Summerslam so I'm not worried about that. What I am worried about is, like Hasney pointed out, they say the same shit every year and it's a small tweak with a new skin. I've been harping on Universe mode needing the most attention due to the replay factor of the game being almost entirely in that mode, yet I hear it's pretty much the same thing every year. This is why I haven't bought the game in years.

Feels like they work really hard on one or two entrances so they can show those off. The Bray Wyatt one looks really good, for example, but they still can't seem to get something like Randy Orton ' s strobes to match his music. Those are just entrances though, not the actual gameplay which is, I guess, a big deal.

That archtype feature was in the series before. So add another old feature touted as new again. It adds a little bit to tne gameplay, but its nothing compared to a full on logic system.

Years later and they still haven't ripped off Shadow of Mordors nemesis system for universe mode. I thought it was so obvous that it would be great for a wrestling game, but I guess not.

In all seriousness though, I'll keep tabs on this game in the lead-up just as I have done every single year since Shut Your Mouth. I miss the days of the annual SmackDown game being a date I'd have circled on the calendar and every piece of info getting me more and more pumped. Remember the SmackDown Countdown? Getting to see something new literally every day was amazing at the time.

But for years now all of the "hype" has been fluff. I see no need to ever buy the WWE games on Day 1 because I know realistically I'm gonna get bored fast of the same tired engine.

I'd love to be wrong about this one, because I'd love to have a WWE game to genuinely look forward to. And some of the stuff mentioned so far would be really intriguing if it's legitimate. But that's a huge if given the way the series has gone.

I do miss the Countdown days.

I also miss the days when the WWE games were actually of a good quality.

I haven't bought a WWE game since WWE 2K14 and I never even played it. I still have it in it's cellophane somewhere.

Before then, I would always look forward to the next WWE game and pre-order it and then play it pretty much constantly once I got it. The last WWE game I actually played was WWE '13.

Now, I really don't give a shit about WWE games. For the last few years, all I've heard are bad things about WWE games and seen nothing but glitches and complaints appear on the internet.

I think the last time I read a really good review about a WWE game was SvR06, which actually was a really good game in my opinion. After that, the games began to slowly just be the same as last year but with a new cover and a new wrestler or two.

Yeah the series really needs to follow the Call of Duty route in the sense of having at least 2 developers work on different games and then alternate the releases.

A new engine or really drastic changes isn't going to happen as long as Yukes is handling almost all the work for the games. 2K getting Visual Concepts to lend some help is good but not enough for the series.

There were so few changes last year bar a couple of gameplay tweaks and a shitty promo engine that it's plausible that they did spend all their time on a new engine for this year alongside actual changes to career and universe that they didn't do last year.

Not exactly holding my breath though.

I just had a random thought. If there's new models for this new engine, but the old models are compatible... Is there going to be 'premium' models and some are still using the old models? There's 120 guys on this new roster, they can't do them all in a year I bet....

drave
07-06-2017, 05:55 AM
You know there will be. I have always said since they started scanning guys that if they do one they need to do them all. The difference between models is so obvious it is horrendous.

#BROKEN Hasney
07-06-2017, 06:05 AM
Yeah, but I'm thinking multiple tiers, like:

1) Scanned and new model for 2k18
2) Scanned and 2k17 model
3) Not scanned, but redone for 2k18
4) Not scanned and 2k17 model

2 and 3 can be interchangeable depending on how good the new modelling/engine is.

Evil Vito
07-06-2017, 08:34 AM
I'm cautiously optimistic that the whole main roster got scanned just because you could hypothetically send the Raw roster to be scanned one day, then SmackDown, then NXT etc.

People like Jinder, Rhyno, and Curt Hawkins will probably have the new models just because they didn't have models last year. But guys like Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel were probably put on the back burner and will just retain their 2k17 models.

The legends are always gonna be awkward too since they can't be scanned on account of being dead/not representative of the "era" their playable character.

At the end of the day this is based on a near 20yr combat engine. They can tweak it all they want but the underlying DNA is this arcade wrestling game called Smackdown!.

At this point it's high time to start from scratch. Bottom up, new engine. Maybe even a new developer. Any potential, those sparks of brilliance, that the series occasionally had is weighed down by the overall gameplay. It's almost the same issue Call of Duty has. Each game would have one or two interesting ideas, but you're still playing CoD once that fresh car smell fades. Any annual game really.

Then again, maybe people are fine with WWE2k being what it is. It's still fun and the multiplayer is consistently good by design. I personally have a hard time getting back in without custom soundtracks for CAWs since 90% of the reason for getting it was running our created promotions and not having our characters coming down to specific music hit us hard.

Supposedly they've already ruled out custom music on PS4 again. Fuck.

It's especially annoying because MLB The Show has had the feature for the last couple of years, so it's known that it is actually possible to do it. Granted, The Show is developed by Sony so that's probably why they were granted an exception.

Tozawa is actually a really nice reveal. The cruisers were really the only main roster dudes I wasn't sure of. Neville and Aries were going to be holdovers but outside of them I figured maybe TJP, Kendrick, and Swann since the they were cruiserweight champs. Everyone else was a big question mark, Tozawa included.

Bet 10 to 1 the Hardys end up as DLC even though they'll be on-disc.

I actually don't think that's too bad of a likeness all things considered. But given that Nikki's main appeal isn't meant to be her looks I'd agree they're not out of the woods yet.

Element Games are hyping a "massive" character reveal tomorrow, saying only that it'll be the first time this person has made an appearance in the series.

Everyone's speculating people like Shaq, McGregor, Rousey, or the always-present Owen Hart rumors. But I'm not sure why Element Games would be given the first crack at revealing somebody important since that's usually IGN's gig. I'm guessing the hype will end up being a joke as the reveal ends up being Ellsworth.

Gameplay shit

http://uk.ign.com/articles/2017/08/17/wwe-2k18-hands-on-6-changes-that-create-a-more-realistic-match

Basically "better AI", "better lighting", carrying moves from the old SD V Raw are back, kickouts are harder and Baron Corbin mode made the cut

Another new feature added, meant to enhance both gameplay and story, is the notion of the quick pin - the idea that one player can land a schoolboy roll-up or a crucifix-style leverage pin, ending a bout quickly, just like the matches on TV sometimes. To aid this, there are now 12 different new match interference scenarios - from run-ins to walk-ins to just entrance music blaring - that will create a targeted distraction and open up a quick pin window. After the bell, the loser, still with full energy, will then have the option of beating down whoever it was that just scored the "fluke win."

On paper the idea of translating the pro-wrestling version of 'flash knockouts' is sound and accurate to the show, but this runs into an issue I've spoken about for years about the eternal contradiction of designing essentially a sports combat simulation... of an openly scripted sports entertainment show.

The win/loss conditions are based on an open ended fighting game technically speaking, but these are rules that honestly do not exist on the show. Superstars don't actually win or lose because of stamina management and physical strategy as with actual contact sports. The win/loss reality of actual pro-wrestling is who had the best match of the night. Who got the biggest pop, who got the night's big moment, who's capturing the crowd. These are what usually controls a wrestlers career (setting aside the politics).

But the games are designed with the ruleset and stratagem of pro-wrestling being a real thing. So we are asked to manage stamina, and drain HP, and work the limbs, and basically operate matches in a manner the real guys don't actually do. Who would win between The Rock and Bret Hart? In a bizarre way we know the answer better than these actual men would, if the in-game stats are accurate enough.

Until devs actually gamify the actual win/loss conditions of the real show, we will always have massive contradictory mechanics like Struggle Submission wins (dramatic on TV, bullshit in game), and flash pins (funny or shocking TV moment, extreme salt generator if a player loses that way).

For instance; while they finally added an old idea of mine that the counter window for high flying attacks should be from the opponent's launch rather than connection, it will still be something people will 99% want to avoid once they get the timing down. Imagine a real match where a guy avoids the shit out of every time somebody jumps from the top. Who would pay to see that, realistic as that would be. But a game that makes the real wrestlers end goal yours, well that's a game where maybe I'll take the dive - so I can 'sell' the attack and build sympathy from the crowd to pay off later on. I elaborated on the crowd sympathy thing a long time ago but the point is; that would actually be a pro-wrestling game, rather than a fighting game simulating a fake sport.

I mean, that pin thing will likely just be Universe/Career where it makes sense.

Kalyx triaD
08-17-2017, 03:02 PM
They explained that 'one player' can land it, not 'the' player. As in something that can be done to another player. It's a universal mechanic. Maybe it can be turned off in the options but still it's another sign of the real show and the game's rules butting heads.

Fignuts
08-17-2017, 03:21 PM
One way they could solve the issue is to have the audience rate the match, and perhaps an in depth logic system.

This year's soundtrack was announced to have been curated by The Rock.

The publisher revealed that WWE legend and box office star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson served as the executive producer of WWE 2K18's soundtrack. The superstar personally picked 11 songs of various genres, from rock and hip-hop to soul. The full list of tracks includes:

Blues Brothers – "Soul Man"
Boston – "Smokin'"
Bruno Mars – "Runaway Baby"
Disturbed – "Down With The Sickness"
Eazy-E – "Boyz-N-The-Hood"
George Thorogood & The Destroyers – "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer"
Joe Walsh – "Rocky Mountain Way"
Kanye West – "Black Skinhead"
Kid Rock – "You Never Met a White Boy Quite Like Me"
Mayday (feat. Tech Nine) – "Last One Standing"
Tech Nine (feat. Krizz Kaliko, Serj Tankian) – "Straight Out The Gate"

The Rock says these songs were chosen because they are "some of [his] personal favorites to workout and get hyped to."

 apparently the Element tweet hyping up a massive superstar debut was just meant to be for Bobby Roode, but IGN chopped they're balls off by just mentioning he was in the game in a random article days earlier. Roode is one of the handful of playable characters in the demo at 2k's SummerSlam event. Not sure why that was worthy of a cryptic tweet.....I mean I like Roode and all but his inclusion was kinda a no-brainer.

Fuck me yet another new grapple system. Be more interested if they made these games from scratch over the period of 2-3 years instead of this yearly update which is really nothing more than tacked on shit. A lot of the same bugs still remain that are basically legacy issues from older iterations of the game.

They probably still won't let us import audio files on a hard drive to the game, obviously such an advanced option is too complex for them, ignoring the fact raw 2 had this option 14 years ago...

Fignuts
08-19-2017, 06:08 PM
Audio importing isn't their fault. Sony and Microsoft stopped supporting it so they could pimp their respective music services. A few select games have the option, but it's stuff like MLB the show, which sony itself is involved in developing.

#BROKEN Hasney
08-19-2017, 06:47 PM
Yoi can pretty much import and play anything on the PS4, all Sony changed is mp3 ripping and the codecs at the base level. This has been confirmed by Konami when talking about PES logo importing, saying they thought about audio too like crowd chants.

All it takes is effort and licensing codecs. But 2k gonna 2k.

Yeah, I doubt we get Drew. Really anybody who debuted after Mania is pushing it.

I think DLC will shape up something like this:

Future Stars Pack
Aleister Black
Elias Samson
Kassius Ohno
No Way Jose
Ruby Riot

(sub out other pre-Mania NXT characters for any of these that get revealed next week)

205 Live Pack
Ariya Daivari
Drew Gulak
Mustafa Ali
Noam Dar
Tony Nese

(205 Live arena is confirmed and I'm banking on Swann, Kendrick, and Gallagher being revealed next week...if they're not though they'd be here instead of some of the ones listed)

UK Pack
Mark Andrews
Pete Dunne
Trent Seven
Tyler Bate
Wolfgang

Supposedly there won't be a HOF Showcase pack this year because Angle's already the pre-order bonus and DDP/Rude are in the game. Maybe Beth and the Rock 'n Roll Express get revealed next week, if not maybe there's an extra pack with them and a couple other legends.

To me the two biggest "surprise" omissions were Andrade Almas and James Ellsworth, and even with the latter I kinda understand not putting him in since he's really a manager more than he is a wrestler.

Almas though is a head-scratcher. On a game that has such a heavy NXT presence to not have a guy who's been on pretty much every Takeover is a surprise.

Guessing the Future Stars pack they do every year will be: Almas, Black, Ruby, Elias, and maybe Heavy Machinery. Probably no Drew though since he signed later on.

The cruisers that missed out were ones that I expected to miss out - but even still it's like 5 dudes (Nese, Gulak, Daivari, Ali, Dorado). Wish they could've made it. They may wind up being a DLC pack but still...I'm sure they could've squeezed them in.

Rumor has it Almas specifically asked to not be in the game. Seems odd to me but it would explain the one glaring omission to the roster.

Honestly, the only reason I still bought these games was because of the great presentation and all the moves that weren't in Fire Pro Returns.

With Spike constantly adding more moves to World, and mods providing enough authentic presentation to satisfy me, I may not buy this or any other 2k game until they make some drastic changes.

Career mode details. Well, the entire mode has been a dull slog every year since they introduced it, but they promised it would be more refined and have a multiplayer endgame, so let's see what they've done.

2K today announced details for WWE 2K18’s MyCAREER mode, which will enable players to live out their dreams and experience the lives of WWE Superstars through strong story narratives.
This year, players will choose from two very different paths – Company Man or Fan Favourite –and decide how their roads to WrestleMania (and beyond) will unfold through match performances, promos, alliances and other actions. Additionally, this year’s MyCAREER mode introduces a free-roaming backstage, an updated promo generator, and enhanced MyCAREER invasion, where the MyPLAYERs of friends can still populate a player’s MyCAREER save but now play a bigger role through face-to-face interactions, tag team alliances, side quests and more.

In WWE 2K18, we wanted MyCAREER to focus on a strong story narrative. We felt the addition of backstage could afford us some cool new ways to experience a day in the life of a WWE Superstar. For us to accomplish this, we needed to develop unique and compelling storylines that are no longer shared from Universe Mode so the journeys that MyPLAYERs go through are unique and fresh.

This year, you’ll have two very different paths you can take en route to your own WrestleMania moment (note: you will be able to play past that WrestleMania moment; your story won’t end there). Here are the two paths:

Company Man – Going down the Company Man path means you’re all about helping the general managers (GMs) get what they want out of the roster on any given show. This involves conspiring with the GMs backstage, ambushing other WWE Superstars in the locker room or during their interviews and basically doing whatever it takes to maintain that GM’s power, both in the ring and backstage. The rewards are hefty, though! Continue helping the GM succeed, and you’ll gain access to awesome upgrades, such as the ability to orchestrate a run-in to help you win a match. You can also access Vince McMahon’s office to lobby for match card changes and title rematches.

Fan Favorite – Being a Fan Favorite means you don’t play the whole company game and you’re all about putting on the best matches and promos. You have a locker room full of WWE Superstars and Legends backstage. This route involves earning their respect by taking on different match types – night-in and night-out. You’ll also have WWE Superstars test your in-ring aptitude and skills on the microphone, but if you succeed at this, you will earn the whole locker room’s respect – and with that comes some perks. WWE Legends are always backstage during events. If you earn their respect, they’ll start to give you in-ring bonuses for your matches and promos. If you become the complete package – the guy who can walk the walk and talk the talk like Stone Cold Steve Austin or John Cena – you’ll be able to have your own customized WWE Championship or Universal Championship. This honor is only given to the best of the best.
In short, it’s ultimately your choice how your MyPLAYER’s road to WrestleMania will unfold. We definitely put a bunch of twists and turns to make it feel like it’s your own story, and we hope you’ll be surprised by a few of the WWE Superstars and events that will pop up along the way!

The first part already sounds like constantly praising the authority like the last games....

Free-Roaming Backstage

This is something fans have wanted for a while, and it’s something we have wanted to do for a while as well. With a MyCAREER laced with storylines that involve both in-ring and out-of-ring action, it made sense to bring a free-roaming backstage into MyCAREER.

We wanted MyCAREER to be experiential this year. We wanted players to spend more time interacting with WWE Superstars and supporting personnel to better experience all their unique personalities. Rather than looking at menus to determine who you should align with or who you want to make your rival, you can simply go talk to them or ambush them backstage. Want an interview with Renee Young? Simply go up to her and ask for an interview. Don’t like the WWE Superstar she’s interviewing? Go up to him during live TV and interrupt that interview.

There will be no shortage of personalities backstage, from WWE Superstars and Legends to GMs, apparel tailors and more. Sometimes the interactions will also present side quests that are separate from the main storylines. Think of them as mini-stories that aren’t as involved or crucial to your Road to WrestleMania. For example, some WWE Superstars might ask you to ambush a rival or go toe to toe with them in a promo.

See, now that part sounds good at least as long as there's a lot of variety!

Last year, we added promos to MyCAREER for the first time. While we were happy to finally let players get on the microphone, we knew we could deliver more in the second year of designing the promo feature in WWE 2K18. The two clear improvements we set out to accomplish were making WWE Superstars feel more like themselves and improving the scoring system, as it constricted players from telling the promos they wanted to tell.

It was clear that some of the more unique WWE Superstars needed to be represented better when cutting a promo in MyCAREER. WWE Superstars like Undertaker and Enzo Amore come to mind when discussing this. We created nearly 200 new animations – spread across multiple WWE Superstars – to make them feel more like themselves while on the microphone. You’ll notice Shinsuke Nakamura moving in that unique way that he does while talking. Bray Wyatt will fidget maniacally while preaching on the microphone. The New Day will dance their way to the ring instead of walking. We wanted promos against these WWE Superstars with unique personalities to feel very special. We wanted your MyPLAYER to really feel like you’re going face to face with them in a battle of words.

One of the more fun components of promos was the combo system, so we looked to shift scoring to focus on that rather than trying to find the best fan favorite or bad guy answer. Last year’s scoring model was very rigid and made players feel like they had to make choices they didn’t want to make in order to get high marks. This year, rather than trying to score the highest value, we wanted to score players on promo cohesion. This means as a player, you’ll be able to pick the point you want to make while on the mic. After making that point, you’ll be scored based on how well you stick to that point. You no longer have to worry about if this is what you should say as a crowd favorite or a bad guy. Promo this year is about saying what you want to say and sticking to your word.

They haven't mentioned the awful script of last year though, but at least the scoring sounds fixed.

MyCAREER Invasion

With the addition of free-roaming backstage, naturally we started thinking about the possibilities for MyCAREER invasion. Just like last year, your friends’ MyPLAYERs can populate your MyCAREER save. However, this year, you’ll actually see them backstage. They act just like any WWE Superstars you’ll see backstage: you can talk to them, pick them up as tag partners, get side quests involving them and even ambush them. It’s up to you what role your friends’ MyPLAYERs will have in your MyCAREER.

In closing, we are looking forward to letting you try out all this new stuff in this year’s version of MyCAREER in WWE 2K18. A lot of hard work went into making this year’s MyCAREER feel different from previous iterations, and we hope you all enjoy it!

Sounds about the same.

Sounds like more iteration that revolution AGAIN. I just hope it doesn't have the same stupid milestones like holding a belt for a year or whatever.

And as a Company Man, you constantly get upstaged by Triple H as he slowly but surely makes everything you do irrelevant, until at last he unifies the WWE and Universal Championships and reigns for all the rest of eternity, having pushed you, his one remaining opponent out of WWE and into the arms of another company which immediately lets you win their laughable piece of metal and leather they call a "world championship" in your debut match your first night with the company. :shifty:

Looks cool.

I'm not following it super close but what'll swing it for me is what they have from pre-2005 in terms or wrestlers and arenas and what the creation modes are like. If both those things are good, I'll pick it up. What I saw in the video leaves me optimistic for the pre-2005 stuff.
I still can't find any videos of any off the games creation modes so I'm guessing they haven't shown anything.

If NBA 2k18 is any indication, Switch version of WWE 2k18 could end up being plagued with some serious storage problems. All depends if 2K Games really cheaps out on the cart size for this game like with NBA 2k18.

The biggest cart available is 32GB and they're expensive. You can't find FIFA under £45 here like you can on other formats.

With the game being about 50GB normally, it's likely downloads will be needed even if they don't cheap out.

Emperor Smeat
09-18-2017, 06:45 PM
With NBA 2k18, 2K Games only went with an 8GB cart which isn't enough to hold the base game itself. Also likely poor optimization but that's been a general issue plaguing consoles since the PS3.

Initial software download after purchase – 6.8 GB
Additional software update – 16.1 GB
Save file – 5 GB system memory per save file

At least with something like Doom, the entire base game is on the cart and multiplayer is offered as a separate download or like with RE Revelations 1 & 2 where you at least get the entire first game on cart.

Small question since I've never played or bought a WWE game since the Gamecube era, how long does it take to normally unlock all the regular wrestlers in a game?

Is it just the more matches you do, the more you unlock or you need to hit very specific goals to unlock them?

Last year you basically earned “currency” and purchased who you wanted. The more you played/higher star rating of matches the quicker you earn/can unlock.

I understand a lot of the DLC uproar. I mean it's priced exactly the same as last year but there are way fewer downloadable wrestlers. Last year you had 28 DLC wrestlers in the Season Pass and that's not even counting the NXT enhancement pack (Nakamura, Jax, Crews) you had to pay for separately unless you got a special version of the game.

This year the number of DLC guys in the Season Pass is down to 10 and it still comes at the $30 price point. I understand why the DLC numbers went down with the larger on-disc roster, but I think charging last year's prices for it kinda sucks. $20 probably would've led to fewer complaints.

Or if they kept the $30 price I think one more pack to bring it to 15 DLC wrestlers woud've made it all a lot more palatable. Usually they come in packs of 5 and there are exactly 5 guys from 205 Live that were left out (Ali, Gulak, Nese, Daivari, Dorado) so that could've worked. I get why those were the 5 left out initially given they were the least featured guys in the division in the first few months, but people would've downloaded them to complete the roster and get their moves. Plus any of those dudes who are still around come next spring will probably be in 2k19 so they kinda coulda got a jump start on it by putting them in as DLC this year.

Universe mode stuff

https://wwe.2k.com/news/entries/wwe-2k18-universe-mode

Rivalries have intensities and can be "possible rivalries".

Storylines:

One important thing we changed this year was how our story system handled calendars with inconsistent PPV dates. Our previous system wasn’t ready to properly handle WWE’s brand split and the multiple PPVs per month. For us, this meant overhauling our system for the most flexibility possible. This is more of a back end, behind the scenes change that we worked on, but the result is that rivalries and storylines will now work regardless of when they start and when the next PPV is happening.

I’m excited we can share these details with all of you, and I hope you enjoy the changes we’ve made. Our teams here at Visual Concepts, along with Yuke’s, has worked hard on these improvements and with re-working our story system, and I would love to hear everyone’s feedback.

Thank fuck for this basic feature.

Goals:

Goals

One of the challenges we’ve faced with Universe is trying to articulate specific motivations for the Superstars. It’s easy to say everyone wants a championship, but there’s a lot more depth than that when you watch WWE’s broadcasting. As a result, we’ve implemented personal goals for Superstars that they can chase after as they compete in Universe.

Goals change for each Superstar based on various factors like their rankings and relationships. Champions want to defend their titles and the No. 1 contenders want to win those titles, close allies may want to form a tag team while a team on a losing streak may want to split up, and so on. Goals have an impact on the types of matches and rivalries that will get started for the Superstars. You’ll also have the ability to customize goals for Superstars so that you have some suggestive control over how Superstars can be booked.

That sounds interesting enough so you can book stories within tag teams and stuff I guess, but the example they use isn't very creative:

https://cdn.2kgames.com/wwe.2k.com/news/wwe2k18/universe6.jpg

Then there's this line:

As you’re playing through matches, there’s a chance that one Superstar completely outclasses and overwhelms their opponents from the very start. Superstars with significantly higher attributes than their opponents can cause a squash match to occur, putting their opponents in a situation where they must mount a considerable offense to survive or suffer crushing defeat.

So I'm guessing that if it's Braun V Kendrick or some shit, Brawn can just wreck him unless something amazing (or a good player controlled character) overcomes him.

Whole thing "seems dumb" but honestly, I'll be slightly happy if I can just run an NXT with 4 PPVs a year that doesn't fuck up storylines. That's been needed for about 3 years.

Jerichos 2000 entrance timing is wayyyyy off. Undertaker bangs his knee on the barricade coming off the ramp.

We didn't need either of those HHH's. We needed one with My Time or Higher Brain Pattern and that's it.

Vaders entrance is pretty good, as said above timing is way off on jericho's and the hhh dx entrance, they aren't meant to appear til just after "break it down" hits in the music.

As expected, Universe seems basically untouched. Fatal four ways, triple threats, and stipulation matches being booked for no rhyme or reason. Rivalries still appear to be little more than "a billion singles matches in a row" and while you can attempt to justify it by saying real WWE feuds aren't much better, that doesn't make it any less of a slog to play.

Yes you can simply edit the cards yourself, which is nice. But when you do that it effectively cancels the rivalry. You have to follow the rivalry the way the game sees it or you're not going to get cutscenes. So what's the point? To that end, most of the personal goals are just "win a match against my rival" too. Not very creative there.

The only cool feature I think is the attribute boosts/declines as people move up and down the power rankings. Back in the days when I did CPU sim feds, the real life main eventers were always going to rule the roost because the ratings were set and couldn't change. There was never a chance of Zack Ryder or somebody beating John Cena. Now you could actually push those lower card guys in such a way that they could hold their own against the CPU.

Having said all that, it's year 8 of Universe Mode and yet getting real enjoyment out of it is still going to require overriding pretty much everything the game wants you to do.

Apparently this won't have 8 player online matches, making 8 man pretty shit. You don't want AI involved in an 8 man ladder match because fuck that, same with tags. But since the PS4 can only support 4 controllers at once, it means the mode isn't great.

XB1 and PC can support 8 controllers, but not sure if the game is using that or not.

Saw a different Rumble vid. Just skimmed it. The good news is the ring filled up in that one.

The bad news is one of the first things I noticed was TM-61 brawling with each other inside a full ring. So much for tag teams helping each other like they'd claimed.

Everything that's wrong with WWE 2k18 (so far) (https://youtu.be/qtf0IC_q9hU?t=1m22s)

GOOD: Career and Universe don't seem as repetitive

BAD

Career and Road to Glory creation tools are VERY limited. Apparently can't even change the race? WTF? Hence the loot boxes.
Road to Glory maybe. Sounds good, but 2k's servers are a massive question mark
The build they played at the preview event had NO CUTSCENES FOR CREATE A VIDEO OR UNIVERSE. The devs said it was supposed to be there, but it broke and they were trying to get it back in. Wow.
PETTY THING: Why put a treadmill backstage when you can't run on it like HCTP?

I mean I don't give a toss about Career really, Universe is my wheelhouse and that's the mode I would be focused on most. I'll be interested to hear more as people play the game.

The early videos I saw didn't look promising at all with the game creating just non-sensical cards but we'll see.

Gotta prep myself because somebody will probably end up getting me this game for Christmas or something.

Gonna pre-order tomorrow for PC. The DLC guys will be available later, right? What I would do for console is buy standard edition and wait to get the other stuff. Not sure if it's worth $90 if I can wait and get the stuff cheaper.

At least one of the hidden trophies is a "Win as _________" vs. AI in "Play" (Exhibition). Can't see any of the hidden ones on "playstationtrophies.org" trophy list page for the game yet, though, so there may be just that one hidden one like that or quite a few.

There are also identical, non-hidden ones for winning singles matches in Play vs. AI as Miz and Daniel Bryan.
