Just a general idea would be good as to what they are. Like obviously some of them will have the job shrines I know are coming in order to dual-class characters. And I know at least some of them are side quest related as I've gotten a side quest that gave has ended up with me inquiring the location of what I assume is a optional boss and it's located in one of the level 25 optional areas. I just want to basically know whether I will eventually end up going into them on quests or not or if I should go out of my way to traverse them for upgrades/levelling. I'm a whore for things like this, and if they are purely optional and just for upgrades I already know I'm going to go dungeon diving before I progress the story lol but I don't want to go into them for nothing if they are used later on because I hate backtracking.
Some of them are for sidequests, some of them just have loot / optional bosses / XP grind. The optional bosses can actually be captured but they have very low percentage. Story dungeons are all blocked off with sign posts until you have to go there.

Most of the rando caves are purely optional or tied to sidequests. Many have bosses organically and many have bosses tied to sidequest. But few caves "on the way" to missions are story areas. Most story areas are connected to towns and have no alternate routes in.

I just started getting the basic secondary jobs. Do you lose the skills you have unlocked for your secondary jobs if you switch to another one on the same character? Obviously you cant use them if you don't have the job set as your secondary, but are they still unlocked if you switch back to said job later?

Yes they are still unlocked.
You are able to use the passive abilities even after switching too.

Healing is like the least useful thing Alfyn does. I mean, he can do a full heal, single target unboosted if you really want him to, but he's really there to break guard and then break damage limit.

Finished all of chapter 4. Rankings below for stories.
Olberic by far. Felt epic.
Primrose. Was done beautifully
Ophelia. Cant believe this made my top 3 but it stopped up big time in chapter 3 and 4.
Cyrus. Was well done and each chapter worked well together.
Haanit. same as Cyrus.
Therion. Last 2 chapter were good but not enough to save the entire story.
Tressa and Aly are both bad so they can share the last spot.
Ruien
07-30-2018, 10:17 PM
Overall the game is amazing. Disliked a chunk of the dialogue though. only major complaint is having the silent heroes. Major drawback from having 8 different stories.
Maybe next game they can have duo chapters after chapter 1 or something. Like Cyrus and Olberic would be chapter 2 and Cyrus and Therion would be chapter 3.
Loved the extra dungeons legit being extra. you could easily skip them if you wanted. Combat was awesome. Extra shrine fights were legit. Side quests were unique for the most part. they never seemed repetitive.
9/10. Its awesome when you have to look hard to find flaws in a game.

just beat an optional boss that took me 2 hours and like 200k plus all my best items.
Forrest of no return lvl 48
what a fucking fight. haanit is lvl 56 apoc. cyrus is lvl 46 merchant. prim is lvl 46 scholar. tressa is lvl 46 cleric.
first few goes the raw damage im taking is just too much. i cant dish out dps fast enough to deplete this 300k hp and his weaknesses change 3 times after you break him so im learning patterns as i get wrecked.
so around the 3rd or 4th death i figure that since i have cleric job with me i can teach everyone saving grace and since i hace merchant maxed on everyone second chance too.
so once someone falls i use the large revive item for an over heal of 9,999 which lets me tank the damage.
in most cases thats a GG. but his third phase only has 2 weaknesses. swords and light. i have light but my only sword is merchants hire help...so i do. id break him with the 150g summon and once broke dish max bp with the 30k summon.
my non merchants are dealing light and wind damage (wind for the adds) with items until i literally ran out
did the job but i fucking earned that win.
most fun ive had in a game since persona.

Multi-turn AOE magic, LV50 backup summons including 2x elementals, break immunity, seals magic, full party unconscious, four turn speed / magic / atk / def buff as one move. Managed to turn the tables on him and pretty much squash him. Prim is so much better than Cyrus, her speed was crucial to getting turns in before he had a chance to put his guard up and throw all his shit at me. Dbl Blk via Ophilia + Alfyn's concoct gave me some fast breaks, and the extra summon I had covered my lack of bows. Such a satisfying victory.
I'm at the forest of no return boss right now, switched my shitty Cyrus back in to get a more fair comparison.

Finished Cyrus Ch4. Really good stuff, nice change from getting plowed.
(Contains Ophilia Ch4 spoilers too)
There is a definite link between these stories, the power of the sealed god plays a huge part in both of the Ch4s I've completed. Mathias was even drawing from it directly. This leads me to believe there is an end game bringing the whole group together to stop the dark god breaking free of his seal. Interested to see if this theme appears in the other six Ch4s. Hornburg keeps coming up with Cyrus too so going to assume Olberic is involved, the Therion dragonstone plot seems to allude to it too. Prim could easily head in that direction. Alfyn, Tressa and H'aanit on the other hand remain a mystery.

I unintentionally started doing chapter 4s in OCTOPATH order: Ophilia, Cyrus, Tressa. Decided to continue that way and it's really cool how each Ch4 reveals another piece of the puzzle. Not sure if the PATH side will follow suite, but the first half in that order is incredible.
Also I noticed that the major secondary character in each story could possibly spell out TRAVELER. Not sure if that is a co-incidence with the half I've completed or if the other four actually fit the pattern. Maybe not. Dunno.

Most intrigued about Alfyn's Ch4 of the ones I have left, because I have no fucking clue where that plotline is going. Prim and H'aanit should be great too, Prim's story is badass while H'annit's is really quirky and a little more of a loose thread. Still can't get over H'aanit's Ch2. That path action. Took 2 tried to get the last boss down. I realized I needed better gear and such before taking on the last boss since I got rolled hard the first time. I got kind of lucky too that I used tressa/runelord with haanit/scholar and cyrus. Made their attacked like 15k damage per hit. Didnt seem like my physical damage from Olberic did much.
Second group was prim/sorc and Therion/warmaster which was both super lucky. Ophilia and Alf were able to keep them up and restore BP on the second part.
Awesome last boss. Totally epic feel.
I really hated that the group never spoke together with all 8 at the end. They were all shown together and could have done the basic "we will stop you" and "not today evil lady (this is from tressa obviously).

Patience is amazing. I do like the SP Steal skill from the Thief class, saves having to use a passive slot for SP regen. Plus a lot of duel targets tend to be dagger weak so you get 2x break while regening SP or HP which is a nice bonus

Beat Starseer on my second attempt, swapped out Prim for Dancer Cyrus so I could run Scholar H'aanit. Much easier with two Scholars.

I cant even figure out a good strategy on that right now.
Scholar is a waste most turns but you still need it for when breaks are available, but you need a Scholar who can use weapons. Thief Cyrus or more likely Scholar Therion (so I can run Thief Ophilia too for debuffs) seems like the best option for multi-hit daggers on the pups, but they are my worst party members by far atm. Hunter of some kind seems like a requirement for leghold trap, maybe Olberic. Alfyn there for breaks / damage. Gotta get Therion up to speed before I can test this.

Not sure if I should go after Starseer or Warmaster next, I have fought both once and got wrecked. Would imagine Sorcerer is a huge bitch. Leaning towards the Seer, and then I will go check out your forest.
Sorcerer is the only one I have. Haven't even done my first chapter 3 yet LOL. Got it with a party of 52 Haanit/Warrior, 50 Therion/Merchant, 49 Alfyn/Scholar and 47 Primrose/Cleric. Click the spoiler if you want a strategy for how to handle the fight.
Make absolutely sure you go into the battle with saving grace on everyone. This is key. Also make sure to use your boost to break this bastard before his first turn or else he will put a lock on your ability to buff yourself for 5 turns. This should be easy enough by using a single boost physical from one person and a double cast spell from Alfyn as his initial breakpoint is only 4.
You want to use Haanit to keep leghold trap applied. That's her purpose entirely. If you apply it with boost you'll get a bunch of turns on the sorcerer with it, which frees you to stockpile boost and possible get off the warrior divine a time or 2 before needing to reapply leghold. Feel free to also use her to occasionally pop an item if you need to.
Therion is there to assist with breaking via boost and to use SP/BP items on the others as needed. You can also use hired help if you have the spare money and want to.
Alfyn is going to be used for 2 purposes. His first is the most important. You want to get his BP up as soon as possible and use the Apothecary divine on him, then the next turn use concoct to mix a purifying seed and essence of grape. This is going to give everyone 9,999 health and buy you the time you need to set up the rest of the strategy since this guy will get 2 triple cast spells in per turn. After you do this, alfyn is there to break the sorcerer and cast max boost double spells when he is broken. Obviously you can reapply the health buff with him if you get back below max health, but if you play this right, you'll never need to.
Primrose is the most important person here with the dancer/cleric set up. If you get the sorcerer broken before his first turn, you're golden. Otherwise you will have to use her to heal and stall until his buff lock on your characters wears out. What you want to do is feed her a big pomegranate and use the dancer divine on her. Then the next turn you want to boost reflective veil. This is going to give everyone reflect. Keep stacking this up to higher counts (9 is the max). Keep casting it while you rebuild bp for the dancer divine again. When it is down to 2-3 stacks and you have the required bp, recast dancer divine and start restacking veil. As long as you keep doing this cycle you will never get hit by the sorcerer. Each spell it casts on you will reflect onto it 12 times, so when it uses a spell it's weak to at the time, it will also be breaking itself. After a few minutes, the sorcerer will commit glorious suicide.
I've also just given the warmaster a first run. I get the feeling that you NEED sorcerer for this battle. Got it to red before it changed the whole game up and viciously booty raped me. And it went in dry.

Spoiler to help you out on your next destination:
In the first area of Grandport there is a guy guarding a house. Challenge/Provoke him and get his ass out of the way, then go inside to find another NPC. Have Alfyn or Cyrus scrutinize the person, though they need to be level 50 or higher. The NPC will give you thieving tips and tricks and make your loot run MUCH easier. There are soooo many NPCs with soooo many good items to be had there.
Finally got all of the jobs out of the way. Haven't done much with the Runelord yet but I can see a couple things you could do with it that would make it incredible already. Sorcerer and Warmaster are both invaluable. With those 2 in a party you are guaranteed to be able to hit any weak point an enemy has. Haven't tried the Starseer yet because it seems like you almost have to use it on Ophilia or have someone else in the party equipped with cleric to have access to more reliable healing.

Beat Warmaster fairly easily thanks to Leghold Trap and then Sorcerer with the greatest of ease. Sorcerer didn't even trigger his FUCK YOU mode so I must be a little bit overlevelled for him.
Not sure what the best set up for most of the extra jobs would be, Runelord would make best use of Sidestep or Reflective Veil but I put it on Olberic because how could I resist Mystic Knight? Sorcerer will likely be Prim, maybe H'aanit Warmaster. Field tests required.
Going to jump back into Ch4s tomorrow. Maybe go after the Leviathan boss because I can probably squash it at this point but I'm interested to see the Octopath take on him. Hope he's an eldritch horror tbh.

H'aanit is currently my warmaster and it's working well so far.
Tressa is definitely the best possible use of runelord. Transfer rune into sidestep is ridiculously OP. My Tressa is a bit under leveled though so I currently have Runelord on Therion to assist with breaking enemies quicker.
I have Sorcerer on Alfyn. I dunno why but Alfyn is just my dude for the mage classes. His ability to carry axes makes him great for it as there are a couple axes that have really high elemental atk, and it still allows him to have access to halfway decent physical attacks if necessary. Also the apothecary ultimate allows me to overheal everyone easily, so he is kind of indispensable. Easily the most important member of my main party.

Alfyn (& OCTOP) Ch4
Aflyn's Ch4 is the most low stakes so far, his 2 and 3 were amazing but he never really had a strong arc and it shows here. I did laugh at the absolute convenience of being in the exact town he needed to be in to get the incredibly rare ingredient. The big reveal at the end saved it from being an absolute mess, though if I hadn't played Tressa first the reveal would have meant absolutely nothing. Pretty cool way to tie him in and Alfyn is perhaps my favourite character, shame he has such a weak finale.

Was a REALLY long fight but there was only really one spot near the end where I was in any danger, kept him / her debuffed with Leghold Trap, Shackle Foe and less importantly Armour Corrosive and most of my damage came from Brand's Thunder. Everyone had Saving Grace, Therion and H'annit had Patience equipped which was a real clutch ability. Using the Hired Help mercenary for a defence buff either mitigates damage or wasted one of it's turns because it will do an AOE low damage dispel instead of the high damage attack debuff. The only real danger comes from the little wolves, Theif needs to break them ASAP, staggered ideally so you only have to deal with one per turn and then when you have the boost Brand's Thunder the fuckers. When three came up I debuffed two and just threw everything I had at one of them to get it out of there before they could pile on me. Really tough fight, not much room for any mistakes. Pretty cool. Had more trouble with Devourer though I think.

Personally i think its anecdotal and its an rng shit show
Sepholio
08-13-2018, 08:08 PM
It is RNG af. The only thing I think may be intentional about them is that (for me at least) they tend to show up far more frequently in early game areas than in the late game. It would make sense considering when you happen upon them early on they can be rather frustrating to take down before they flee, especially when their high speed gives them the first turn and pretty much guarantees your shit out of luck. Later on you can one shot them with ease. Dunno tho, prob still all RNG.
You can also use the method Destor described up there with the bewildering dance. One of the random side effects given off by the skill is that it will transform enemies in the battle into caits. I'm personally going for the x100 xp/jp boosts that dance can give you though. Potential for over 100k exp per battle is very appealing. I'm hoping for the extra luck of pulling that effect and then the enemies transforming into fat caits before I kill them. Insta-bajillion levels lol.
Ultra Mantis
08-13-2018, 08:09 PM
Was getting multiple Caits most battles for the short time I was in there, Chubby Cait, 2x Cultured Cait and a wolf. Fat ones always ran away, need pre-emptive to kill them I guess.
if I go back and get none then yeah definitely.
Ultra Mantis

Wandered around the maw for around 30 mins, found the Cait party twice though instead of a wolf I got a Snow Drake and then a Snow Leopard. The Leopard has a self heal so once I wiped out all three Caits with Sorcerer Prim's first move I got a good 10 mins on the Leopard just Bewildering Gracing constantly before RNG did four damage moves in a row and killed it. In that time I stacked a bunch of x2 multipliers and came out with 20k EXP, 5k JP. Not bad,
Also the dungeon boss keeps appearing as a random encounter and he gives nice EXP too. Pretty good levelling spot. Runelord Tressa is all you need for sustain. Another merchant for extra donate BP speeds things up on the Bewildering Grace front, but I've only been using that on Cait battles tbf.

I think all 4 of us have the hidden sub jobs so I'll skip the spoiler warnings and just say I encluded them.
Going to rank the classes:
12. Warrior - I think putting this at the bottom will catch heat but I stand by it. The extra 50 attack passive and the 99,999 passive are the only reasons to use this class unless you have a spear based enemy. Its just not that great. Apoc has better single target AoE and single target damage excluding the divine skill which is very good for damage until you get the optional classes but i think this job just doesnt add any utility for a small damage increase. Olberic is great but only when you marry this kit with other (better) kits.
11. Dancer - This class is good for farming. That is about it. Sp recovery passive is nice and dark damage is good for about 60 hours or so but by in large this class is best only put on primrose unless you have need of her divine skill. Ophilia as dancer can have some very useful applications against elemental bosses using Dancer divine plus reflect. Far too niche though.
10. Theif- A lot of things hold this class back. Single target skills galore is a big one. All of the passive suck. Bottom of the bin in that regard. It it werent for its ability to funnel SP into the DPS classes it would be the last on the list but until you get Runelord this is a pretty vital class.
9. Hunter - The class is good for multi bows and a nice AoE damage from Rain of Arrows but it deserves the spot due to Patience. A must have skill on every party member but especially true for your healers. All of its passive are very solid but it does get out classed by other classes.
8. Scholar - Until late game this class is a must and while it is def left in the dust once you get get sorcerer the fact that its a staple for 60 hours or so of the game gets it a nod but late game though this kit is useless unless you're conserving SP. Since there is basically a better version of this class I cant put it any higher than this.
7. Runelord - this set is only this high for one reason: it pairs with merchant in godly ways. the passives are mostly useless and the elemental buff aspects arent that great either. but buffs becoming AoEs is a spammable Dancer divine skill and that is broken in Tressa's hands. Donate BP, Rest and Sidestep are VERY powerful at this point. It also makes Apoc a viable healer but you will have to waste a round on occasion to make it happen.
6. Starseerer - this kit sucks. Some ok moves and some I would never use. Pairs great with dancer's divine skill though. It has it's spot for the passives. BP eater is a must for all DPS and the double BP at the start of the battle paired with it makes farming and grinding a one turn ordeal. And having the ability to test for the 3 rare elemental types in one move is handy too.
5. Apothecary - As a healer this class is basically trash. Though paired with runelord does make it better and the debuff clear is unique and really good as an AoE. it has great damage skills from the axe skills but none of those are why its in the top 5. The divine skill is the single best divine skill from the basic classes (and if it werent for Warmaster it would be the absolute best period.) Items as AoE is HUGE. Especially for the tough bosses.
4. Merchant - Donate BP. Donate BP. DONATE BP. If this werent enough to crack the top 5 (it is) she also has the very high utility of hired help plus some very good passive. SP saver and ...endure? The survive KO passive. Top class set. Plus MONIES.
3. Sorcerer - If you need nukes we got nukes. Pretty broken class. Triple hit all elementals is killer and lowering elemental def makes it even better. Passive leave a lot to be desired but the kit makes up for it in big ways.
2. Warmaster - lolthisissoopwtfweretheythinkingifuckingloveitomg for real...what a fucking DPS class. Great options for multi hit breaking massive damage even without the divine skill and quality passives even if theyre a bit situational. You can deal 60k or so pretty easy per divine skill. It has no equal in DPS.
1. Cleric - No job can half do what this class does. AoE heals. AoE raise. Reflect. These are major skills that every party needs. This job is a must at all times at any part of the game. Saving Grace is probably the best passive in the game as well. Great divine skill too. This is THE must have class no matter what party you build.

Warmaster.
Merchant
Thief
Dancer
Have these 4 classes. Warmaster needs the warrior passive the breaks damage cap and needs bp eater from starseer.
Armor corrosive on dire wolf. Lion dance on war master. Feed bp to warmaster and cast the divine skill.
Should be able to kill it in round 1 or 2.

You can skip dancer and equip the warmaster passive that gives perma ATT+ but i prefer other passives and would bring sorcerer primrose

Yeah that will def work. I was just trying to do it with the same set up I use for everything else, but sorcerer becomes fairly useless as soon as he summons more than one add and locks out his elemental weaknesses, especially since the adds are only broken by physical attacks.

I think all 4 of us have the hidden sub jobs so I'll skip the spoiler warnings and just say I encluded them.
Going to rank the classes:

Haha I ran Ophilia Theif for about 50% of the game and it really works well with her kit, throwing out defence debuffs or 2 x dagger skills for breaks, but I also NEVER used it for SP battery. Passives are all absolute trash yeah and Starseer outclasses it completely, but Phili was locked in my party and doing thief things for a good chunk of time.
Thief is alright as a secondary job, Therion is still absolute garbage though.
That said, Warrior Alfyn was my champion. Dude wrecked so much, Abide into Amputation (even better with Cleric ult applied) or Brand's Thunder. Sublime. My credits roll was mostly just Amputation after Amputation.

Well mostly everything.
You can take it further since a lot of the stat boosts stack
Elemental Edge: 50% Boost, but can not stack with Dancer Buffs (its the same buff but a dif source of said buff)
BP Eater: 50% to boosted attacks
Elemental Aid: 50% Boost, but double SP costs
Augmented Elements: 20% Boost to Elemental Attacks
Stronger Strikes: 20% Boost when you hit weak points

I'm curious, how did you end up with Alfyn as your mage, Seph? His base Elem Atk doesn't seem great (my Alfyn is only higher than Olberic for that stat, stripped of all gear) and he naturally favours physical.
Destor
08-15-2018, 08:31 PM
Its all about gear. Ive never given him any nuts and i have him geared up with a 900 elm attack. +100 bracelt (2 if you want to push him to 999) and bishops staff should max him out(ish) at level 70 or so
Ultra Mantis

Hunter and Thief are really valuable assets for the Direwolf fight imo. Leghold Trap keeps it in a holding pattern so you can always recover from his turn, Shackle Foe stops it from hitting too hard.
Ultra Mantis
08-15-2018, 08:38 PM
Ah, I guess you could make anyone the primary mage if you really wanted to then. Prim is at 999 for me purely through her weapon loadout and it seems like a waste of those sweet Amps to give it to Alfyn instead.

I did exactly what you suggested for the dire wolf battle destor. I dunno how you are killing it in 2 rounds like that. I was on like round 10ish and had cast the warmaster divine many many times. Sepholio
08-15-2018, 09:24 PM
but yea that extra 20-30% would be the difference I'm guessing because when I had the dire wolf broken I was hitting it for 16-20k per hit on the warmaster divine, which would translate closer to the 25k-30k you were doing. Just a touch lower because my weapons aren't entirely optimal obviously.

I think 2 of the devine skills would break him so possible those were broken numbers. Maybe have had the weakpoint passive on this one too for an extra 20%per weak point attack.
