Danielson, like Punk before him, said how AEW handled the Brodie Lee situation was a big factor in his decision to join.
I wish he was still here.

Ruby was def the right person to win there. The title match will prob be on TV, so they def should save Thunder Rosa for later, for a PPV match. Rosa should be the one to take the belt off Baker, but it's too soon to have Baker lose the title imo, so best to save Baker vs. Rosa for a few months down the line. Ruby is a good filler title defense.
Thought maybe they'd have Riho win if not Ruby. Was surprised how her elimination was treated really unimportantly... wasn't even shown on camera smh
Also feel like Rosa is the best women's wrestler in AEW... maybe all of wrestling. Who is better than her?

that TNT opener set just the right tone for the night. i almost shit when suzuki came out. dmd and statlander knocked it out of the park. tag match was an absolute thing of beauty. ruby soho 4 champ i love her so much. jade cargill gonna be a star. guitar was too loud to really hear live during jericho's entrance, but that was a better match than i expected. punk and darby killed it. smoke break during qt match. main event was fantastic even if we all sounded tired by then. cole and Danielson lit that fucker back up, though. insane atmosphere to be in. y'all should come here for a show.

Man... great show top to bottom. I was invested the entire way and even thought the QT vs. Paul Wight match was well placed as a buffer.
I havent seen much of the Young Bucks in all honesty but man, born to be heels those guys but what a moveset! Miro and Eddie Kingston take a bow! Can Brian not do the Yes chant thing? He looked like he was dying to do it but maybe theres a copyright issue?
I am quite interested to see how they fit everyone in now, I really hope they spread the top talent over the shows and don't end up with a massively obvious B show.

Apparently it wasn't just WWE officials who got blindsided by Adam Cole's contract ending earlier than assumed since even Cole didn't know until someone pointed it out to him.
Also confirmed him wanting to keep Twitch was a main sticking point during talks with WWE. They balked at the idea so he took up AEW's offer instead.
According to Cole, he was not anticipating to be a free agent until December.
But circumstances were different than both Cole and his former wrestling home anticipated, as Cole's contract actually came due in June. Cole revealed the details of his WWE deal and how his new agreement with AEW came together very quickly.
"I was under the impression that it was six months later," said Cole. It was a surprise to me, it was a surprise to them [WWE]. All of a sudden I went from thinking December was when I was going to start talking about a new contract, to all of a sudden we were talking about in three days."
Cole confirmed reports that he signed a short-term extension of his WWE deal to finish up his NXT angle with Kyle O'Reilly, who he called "one of my best friends in the entire world" ...
Cole also addressed the future of his Twitch channel. In response to a question about knowing he won't have to give up his channel as he presumably would have had he stayed with WWE, Cole confirmed that it was important to him.
"It's incredibly important to me," said Cole. "Twitch was sort of something I started over the pandemic and wanted to do for a long time, but hadn't really taken the time to teach myself."
"Initially, I really did do it just because I really like video games..." "But then what started from the Twitch stream was this community of people that would all come together and literally share that passion over video games," Cole said.
"I have gotten so many messages from people who are going through a really, really rough time, and the only thing they looked forward to at that time were those streams. I feel a connection with a lot of these people. I know a lot of them by name. Social media can be a really nasty place sometimes, and there is not of that in the Twitch streams."
"So I adore doing that, I'm so happy that I'm still doing it. I don't plan on stopping anytime soon."

Funny thing about re-watching Cole’s debut. It’s not like he entered from the face tunnel and then turned, he entered from the heel tunnel straight away.
The crowd knows there is a heel tunnel and a face tunnel. They literally booed when Punk teased going through the wrong tunnel.
But everyone got so caught up in Cole’s debut that most didn’t even notice he walked out of the heel side. So a lot of people still bit on him Superkicking Jungle Boy. Excellent.

Thinking about what/who is next for Jericho after MJF last night. Some names comes to mind like Andrade, Malakai Black and maybe even Miro. I think in all of those ideas he'd be putting over the younger star. Kind of hard to see what would be immediate for a babyface Jericho right now.
For MJF, perhaps now is the time to turn Wardlow. It's easy to book, MJF chastises The Pinnacle for not saving his ass at All Out and eventually Wardlow can't take any more abuse and whoops that annoying MJF ass.

Also, Tony Khan is so weird and creepy lol. He reminds me of a sociopath reacting like he thinks he should to mimic actual feelings. Watch him for a few minutes while a wrestler is answering questions, it is uncomfortable! And he touches everybody too much.

Meant to rant about this earlier but the casino battle royal format sucks, and is completely counterintuitive to how a timed battle royal is supposed to work. Someone new comes in, they're supposed to get a shine and hit some cool spots to hype the crowd. That can't happen when you're having 5 people come out one after the other. Layla hersh suplexed Nyla rose and it was fucking awesome, but it barely got a reaction because everyone was looking at the entryway. Meanwhile the camera guys are trying to keep up and cutting back and forth so often you'd think Kevin Dunn was all elite.

I dont mind most of the format, but they go through the whole "what is the next suit" bit, but who cares. Unless I have missed it each time, they dont tell us who is in each suit. If it is hearts over spades, it means 5 random unknown entrants are coming out next instead of 5 other random entrants who will now come out later.
To your point, they waste 10-15 seconds on the screen graphics to show which suit is next instead of what is going on in the ring. Its a small complaint, but it does not serve any real purpose.
OK that is WAY better than it was picked up on TV with thousands of people losing their minds. I dig it now.

This is the company that just had Billy Gunn turn on Big Show in 2021. They also had the tag team in the “most dominant faction of all-time” lose their belts on the same show they proclaimed that. Cool your jets, folks.

Finished watching the show today. It was super fun and I enjoyed every match (even Paul Wight/QT - it was exactly what I figured it'd be).
I do hope that these new signings mean people can cycle in and out. And that shit like The Factory can be relegated to Dark or something.

I couldn’t watch the whole show, but looked up a lot of different clips. That probably shows what a good job they are doing recently in building fan interest.
I haven’t watched wrestling regularly since the Cena days and just got tired is watching a stale product get worse and worse.
There are some things I really hate about AEW but I DO love the energy and that things actually happen on their shows. Stories, feuds and surprises. It’s interesting at the very least.
There is no doubt that wrestling needs them. WWE is horrible and has been for such a long time. Maybe this is the unexpected spark that is needed to get things going again. I really do wish them all the best and hope they make the right decisions with their character over the next year or so.
Only things from last night that looked bad were Big Show wrestling and debuting Bryan Danielson with a Diva theme song on top of another debut. Pretty strange.
Other than that, I hope they stick it to WWE because they don’t deserve to be the only legitimate game in town after their last 10 years

Very reasonable take. I was very supportive of the AEW concept initially. I started the AEW thread. But I just can’t stomach more bad wrestling. You have the main product, which sucks, and then you have the alternate product, which has a lot of energy, but sucks. My concern has been that this was always going to put wrestling, in general, in a worse spot than it even started at, which both promotions doing their best to run off fans.
If this stirs the pot in a good way, then I agree with your sentiments entirely. Something needs to change.

I mean, I'm not gonna say this ppv necessarily should be on those old VHS/DVDs to rent for the best ever but I'll take what we can get. It was damn entertaining. I avoided the live thread so I could just soak it all in.

Unless they have brand only PPVs there is no reason for 12. I was good with 4 Raw exclusive, 4 Smackdown exclusive, and the 4 big ones combined.
Without the brand exclusive PPV's I think 6 total per year would be better, then again they produce so much TV that you could just watch the 12 PPV's and not miss anything.

Apparently the original plan was to debut Danielson at the NYC show this month but NYC has a ton of covid restrictions that were possibly going to get in the way so they felt a bit forced to do it early. It didn't feel forced to me though. That ending segment was one if the best PPV endings I've ever seen.

Yeah, AEW's booking of Darby as the scrawny small underdog type that's hard to defeat because he's already used to doing crazy stuff to his body all the time has been great.
Gives off Rey Mysterio type vibes at times with how he's been handled.
That's been one of the biggest differences between the way AEW and WWE books their roster these days where size isn't the "be all end all" to everything.

Overall a fun show, despite Christian losing....
Punk/Darby probably match of the night, if not the world title match....
My God his theme is terrible though....

okay themes but they weren't gonna go bigger than the classic Punk

Cole's theme was ok, Ruby's was pretty sweet for her, but DBry's was just bad...

WWE has WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Survivor Series, & Royal Rumble. The rest are forgettable these days.
And Survivor Series has been trending toward forgettable for a while.

Don't remember how WWE covers cage matches camera placement-wise, but it is a lot better
haven't seen a camerman inside a cage on the apron like that in forever, the single shot was easier on the eyes and it actually reminded me a lot of wcw
pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty good damn ppv

This is the company that just had Billy Gunn turn on Big Show in 2021. They also had the tag team in the “most dominant faction of all-time” lose their belts on the same show they proclaimed that. Cool your jets, folks.
Heels saying heelish things? They still just had an incredibly lengthy reign with the belts too. If Big Show vs Billy Gunn is on Full Gear...then we can start smoking them for it.

If I were to guess, they dropped the titles because they are going to get into a Bryan/Punk storyline.

It's a shame they couldn't get the Final Countdown!

I read that it was his and Bree's friend that made his theme, so at least it was his choice.

I’m glad they didn’t go with final countdown. It’s not anywhere near as recognizable to modern audiences as the valkyrie motif.

They can always change it later but for his debut but it would have ruined that initial “holy shit” moment if he came out to Final Countdown. They had to go with what was more instantly recognizable.

Except that they butchered Flight of the Valkyries.... and then went into a generic sounding theme after the brief recognizable Valkyries bit....
I like Bryan's new entrance music

Though I am also disappointed he didn't use "Final Countdown", Danielson's theme isn't really any worse than WALTER's, or that WWE remix of "Rule Britania" that Bulldog used like twice and everyone wanted his son to use, or that period in TNA/iMPACT where Matt Hardy was straight up using the 3rd movement from Moonlight Sonata. The Apocalypse Now fly-over-the-water bit on the tron seems a bit much, though.

LJ have you actually listened to his music? It’s very much a Brian Danielson song. The crowd noise drowned it out but the song itself is pretty cool.

This. Using a snippet of his old theme was the best way to go to get the biggest pop possible and it worked.

the theme is really bad. they should stick with the premise but use basically any other remix

Yeah, I listened to it to see because I know the fans are loud and AEW in general has issues with their audio mix.... was still bad

They could have done the first few bars of Flight, and then cut right into "IT'S THE FINAL COUNTDOWN!"

Based on some early estimates, All Out 2021 did somewhere around 160k to 200k for PPV buys with the higher end looking more likely.
Meltzer mentioned on Twitter that All Out appears to have done roughly double what ECW's best ppv buys were for a non-WWE show. ECW's highest was around 99k for Heatwave 99.
Tony Khan mentioned the number was also around what WWE got as an average for their non-Big 4 shows the year before the WWE Network's launch, which was in the 180-190k range.

ECW was on domestic PPV where you had to have a TV hooked up booked out so you could actually sit down and watch it live. And people actually used to have PPV parties. AEW exists in a world where some dumb-ass kid whose family isn’t going to waste time on wrestling can go to his room and order it from his tablet, computer, phone or smart TV. And the entire global number is counted.
The AEW/ECW comparison is so disingenuous, and it’s proof that Meltzer just cannot be trusted on these matters anymore. Even domestic buys in 2021 versus domestic buys in 1999 would be sketchy. But to compare AEW’s international buys in with their domestic? Holy fucking dog-shit, Batman.
If AEW did 200k worldwide buys, then about 132k domestic buys is more likely. Which is still enough to “beat” ECW, but the entire market has changed.
