Giving some filler space so people can't say I didn't warn them

So yeah. Spoilers below.

Benoit v Orton last night. Is this for better or for worse?

The pro: Orton took a Hell of a lot of punishment one night prior, at Summerslam. If you look at it from this side of the coin, Orton looks better for beating on someone in his shape.

The Con: As much as Orton took a beating, Benoit ain't exactly fresh as a daisy for this match. From this side of the coin, the match is therefore no more impressive. One step further, and you can say Orton's beating up on a contender who's not 100%.

How do you look at it? Is this a good idea, or a bad idea in establishing Orton's credibility?

I think it was the right move to do the match. They seem to do the rematch the next night after the PPV on Raw a lot of times. The loser of the belt the night before never gets in back though. I remember they did Austin/Rock rematch right after Survivor Series where Taker came in a nailed Austin with the shovel. The crowd was really into that match and was going crazy when Austin almost had it one. That's the one that comes to mind right now.

But the finish was kind of weak with Evolution helping Orton win. I understand they had to do that to set up the beatdown, but Orton just beat Benoit cleanly the night before, it kind of made him look weak that he needed 3 guys to beat Benoit again.

It was a good match though and I actually thought Benoit might of had it won when he hooked the crossface in the middle of the ring. It was the right way to go.

The only time I remember the loser getting the belt back the next was Stone Cold after the First Blood match with Kane.

These two matches put the RKO over a hell of a lot. It also is establishing Orton as a main eventer if the WWE wants him main eventing WM 21

Bad idea. On his first night as champion it looked like he could not cut it against Benoit. Not to mention they gave away months of good segments and would-be classic moments and confrontations with HHH and the rest of Evolution. The Orton-HHH feud has been fast tracked. This stuff should be saved for WM21...

I think we will all see that the WWE has pulled the trigger prematurely on this one.

I think giving Orton the World Heavyweight Championship wasn't premature but that his feud with HHH and Evolution is premature.

Its good and bad, I'll try to explain:

Orton As a Heel:
-If Orton was going to be/stay a heel it made sense the way they started the show. He tried to duck Benoit right away, putting off the match, but Benoit swerves him and the title match is forced. Heels should always be forced into defending their title. Then the finish of the match would have made sense. Evo interferes, Orton gets another win, but its not clean and at least Benoit has some logical reason for a rematch.

Orton As a Face:
-Since they wanted to turn Orton face this is how it should have went down. Orton comes out to all the celebration and talks about how great he is. But he stops himself and says he wants to call out Chris Benoit and tell him something face to face. Benoit comes out, they do a bit of staredown, and Orton could say the reason I shook your hand last night wasn't because I want to be friends or even because I like you, but I do respect this championship and you held it for 5 months and defended it against all comers. You didn't duck anyone, well I'm not going to duck anyone either, so I know you have a rematch clause and you just name the time and place and you got your shot. Benoit would say he wants it tonight and there's the match. Now if Orton is going face, he really should have won clean once again. Even though that kinda hurts Benoit it helps the future HHH-Orton program (Hunter couldn't beat Benoit in like 4 tries, Orton is 2 for 2) and solidifies Orton as "da man". Then you have Evo come out after the match, and they could do the same victory celebration and turn on Randy.

At least that way Randy looks strong, he looks like a stand up guy and he looks like a strong babyface.

But in terms of the two scenarios presented I think its always better as a face to have the match right then and there. I mean the fans at the live event prefer that and you look like you're ready to fight anyone anywhere anytime. A heel on the other would try to postpone things to formulate a plan or something. The only way it makes sense for a face to put off a match is if the heel took an injury and they say I want you at your best so you have no excuses. But other than that, faces want to go now.

Not only that, but they telegraphed the whole "evolution turns" bit. Horribley.

At least they didn't beat down Benoit before the finish though.

They shouldn't have beaten him down at all. Have him celebrate, but cast a dark shadow over HHH's face, so that it's obvious he's not really happy, but Orton is too ecstatic to notice.

As usual, Cynick hits the nail on the head.
