View Full Version : I don't want to say Michael Vick is over-rated, but

C'mon. Like he's good and all, but every sports analyst everywhere is riding his cock like he's the Jesus Christ of the NFL. He had one good season, and everybody is talking about how he's done so much for Atlanta and he is the only reason they are a good team etc etc. Bullshit. I don't know, he adds a huge deal of excitement to games, but I don't think he's revolutionizing the game or anything. People are making it sound like he's been the best QB over the past 10 years, and all he's done has gotten the team to one playoff. Last year I'm not holding against him at all because he was injured, can't really blame him for that. But other than his 2002 season, what has he done? He's playing awful this year, and people are saying that he's slumping, and he'll be back on form in due time. How do you know that?! He hasn't shown anything to be slumping FROM, other than one good season. I guarantee that in 3-4 weeks (or hell even this week since they play the Lions), Vick will have a solid game and people will be saying how "Vick's back" and all that. Back to what though? Being an average quarterback (not saying he's bad by any means, but he's no Manning or Favre) who can run because defenses don't key on him? I don't know, I'm just not seeing him as the gamebreaker that all the media dubs him as. Maybe I'm just not watching enough Falcons games or something.

He is overrated because the media wants a black quarterback to succeed  [/DaveWadding]
Yeah I agree though.

Well, he is an athlete playing QB. If he bulked up he could probably just assume the position of a RB.
In the new system Jim Mora Jr. runs though, I guess it doesn't really cater to his talents.
The guy isn't bad but I definitely forsee him turning into a Kordell Stewart, high for a little while but declining sharply.
Not saying that those days are here, but I see that happening.

I never understand why people always say "He's had one good season and hassn't shown that since then" but he's only played two seasons and was injured for 13 games. Last year was a bust but people still haven't given him a chance to show his numbers from 2002 weren't a fluck. When media are all on him about being great, I don't think they mean this moment in time. I do think that he will be along the lines of Marino,Elway,Favre,Manning... I don't think he's a top 5 QB in the league right now. He will be though.

yeah not to mention a different Coach this year... If Dungy wanted manning to go out and be a scrambling QB I would bet everyone would be like he's the most over-rated QB.

Yeah I know what you're saying, but people are all about him like he's one of the best right NOW. I agree that in time if he keeps up and gets better he can be considered one of the elite, but people are acting like he is already, and I just don't think he is. If he has a good season this year I'll believe the hype, but so far he's just not showing me anything to warrant all the praise he gets

He's not overrated he just doesn't have the experience yet. He already has his statement game against Green Bay in the playoffs and he'll get better and calmer with age

Oh yeahhhh forgot about that. Fucking Green Bay. How do you lose a playoff game at Lambeau. Angry.

I would like to think that the play of the Falcons as a whole probably makes him out to be playing a lot better than he actually is right now.

nah, everytime I hear them talking about the falcons it's their Defense that's getting the credit.

I think Vick would do better if TJ Ducket got more carries. That way the D couldn't put a bunch of small, fast guys in the box to stop Vick because Ducket would run through them and they couldn't put big, burly guys to stop Duckett because Vick would run around them.
But that's my opinion
Gonzo

Yes, the defense is much improved, I guess what I'm saying is that they are 4-0 and then some people may think Vick.
My reason for this is that their defense wasn't stellar in '03. People not realizing this and thinking all the Falcons have is Vick may be attributed to what rdd has stated.

His skills may be overrated slightly, but you can't deny that he can change a game more than any other one player in the league.

No don't get me wrong, this year it's all about the defense in Atlanta. Watch any of their games and you'll see that. It's just that in pregame shows and all that, they make it sound as if the team SHOULD be about Vick, like its his duty to be their one-man show. Kind of ridiculouso

Yea Vick does get a ton of coverage. I think its becuase he is an exciting player to watch, thats all. I mean he is a pretty unique QB, and a damn good one too. Winning at Green Bay that time in the playoffs was nasty, I think there will be a lot more to come from this.
I understand what you are saying though, but I don't really think he is overrated. I think he is just kinda "played out" like a song, like you just hear about him so much or whatever.

I like Vick a lot. I agree with Stima in that he's exciting to watch, but with his style of play I don't think he'll have a lot of longevity. 10 years maybe. He's not one of the top QB's in the league right now, but he will be soon. He's young and he's somewhat inconsistent, but once he gains experience he'll be great. And a huge threat.

I think he was talking more about running styles, Duckett and Vick's running styles are both completely different
I don't really agree with Supremes point though, its the NFL, all the guys are huge AND fast. They are going to play the same guys pretty much if Duckett is running the ball a lot, or if Vick is running it. Only thing that would change would be the defensive fronts.

Kordell was never as good as vick was in 2002.Vick is the most dangerous player in football. He has the best arm and runs like a cheetah. As soon as he get's used to the west coast offense he will be great

How long has Vick been in the league? and ya he is over-rated, he's still usually fun to watch, that's y people go crazy over him.

I'm still not convinced he's over-rated he's only played 23 total games in his career in the NFL...

I don't think he is overrated becuase guys aren't putting him on the same level as guys like Payton Manning or anything yet. People just like to talk about him a lot, he's exciting, they aren't saying he is the next Dan Marino or something.

I dunno. I was thinking last year that he's overrated. Granted he probably is a bit overrated but that's not a knock on him... that's a knock on all the people who think he's just the greatest because he's "different".
I've always considered him gimmicky but he's looked pretty good this year from what I've seen. The west coast offense may be what he's needed to bring out the QB in him.
Plus, he has a presence on the field that brings him up a notch and makes everyone else play better. Sort of like what Ray Lewis does for Baltimore.

I would say no, because he isn't your typical qb. He does get pumped by the media alot, but hey, his team is 4-0, so he must be doing something right.

#1 Fan how can you say he was overrated last year? He didn't play most of the season and his team was ass without him. With him the year before they beat the Packers at Lambeau in the playoffs and this year they are 4-0. What?

I think he is overrated as well. I just want to see a Lion (don't care who) give him a good sack, fumble, return for touchdown. That will make my day even if they lose.

I remember the game in 2003 when Vick singlehandedly won the game against the Vikings, he had like a 50 yard run real late. Granted the Vikes were awful that year, but it was still all Michael.

Was his run last week longer? I thought they said something like career long or something.

Unlike Kordell, Vick actually can throw, but for some reason this year he can't hit the broad side of a barn.
They have to do w/ him what Cunningham eventually did, stay in the pocket... Pass first and run 2nd and be careful w/ his runs... he's setting himself up to get injured again... If he becomes a pocket passer, who when has the ability to break off a 20+ yrd run when there no other options, then he'll be a great QB... till then he's another running QB, which never works in the NFL long term.
