Smackdown and Velocity - 10/12/04
By: John McHero, rajah.com reader

Smackdown

Theordore Long stated that Cena got injured (punctured kidney) in a fight in a club after SD! last week and will be out indefinately. The announced Battle Royal for US title #1 contendership TONIGHT!

RVD defeated Renee Dupree (before match Kenzo sang and then was sent to back)

Billy Kidman defeated Charlie Haas (who had knee taped up. Kidman worked over knee and went up for SSP. Jackie Gayda ran down and pleaded with him not to do it but he did anyway. Stretcher came out for Charlie but he hobbled to the back in the end)

Theodore Long told Heyman that him and Heidenriech would have to come out and publicly apologise for last weeks actions.

Battle Royal for the US #1 contenders scene featuring lots of guys. Rey won eliminating Angle last.

Carltio and Rey ran into each other in the back and Carlito challenged Rey to have match TONIGHT. Rey agreed and then got cheap-shotted from behind by Carlito.

JBL defeated Hardcore Holly to retain title.

Heidenrich came out to ‘apologise’ and went mad lying down. Taker came out after quite a while to an insane pop and they had a quick match. Taker won with Tombstone.

Carlito defeated Rey to retain title using the ropes to cheat.

Eddie vs. Luther went to DQ when Jindrack interefered. Angle then came down but Show made the save and cleared the house with Eddie to end the show.

Great show, good crowd. Taker was by far the most over.

Sounds good, could do with some details on the JBL:Holly match though. And wtf is the use of having a BR for #1 contendership, and then get the match over with right away? I guess they'll have a rematch, but still, that's pretty dumb.

I agree totally they better have a rematch hopefully at Survivor Series or something.

I'm not surprised that Taker was the most over with the crowd. I remember going to a house show in Manchester last year and the crowd popped big style for him

Why does Rey have to win? that just sucks. There are many other guys that coulda won and challenged for the U.S. title other than Rey. I mean he has his own division for cryin out loud. He owns the Cruisierweight division.

Well as far as JBL winnin, I was startin to like this whole JBL thing- not as champion but just the character, until he walked out goin against Hardcore, I mean that is just weak. Then he finally beats him up? Of course he was.

Hopefully that Taker/Heidinsomethinrich thing is over cause it seemed sucky from the get go.

Overall it sounds a lot better than Raw. But that isn't sayin much.

So, what was the point of Booker T droping the title to Cena just to have Cena give it to Carlito Crap in his first match...

people wonder why Smackdown is the "2nd show". or is it 3rd, I may have to see how velocity is doing these days.

That's a gimme. But still that WWE Championship is losing credibility with each JBL title defense

Im not saying it's a good thing. But when i think who out of those 2 i would rather see it on i think Bradshaw just wins.

Ah well heres hoping Booker gets that Push and wins it at Survivour series or something.

See my first post.

Also, did JBL actually PIN a non-jobber??? Because if so, that would be the first credible win he's had since picking up the title.

The results are a bit sketchy, so I wrote up my own:

Velocity

WWE CruiserWeight Championship
Spike Dudley v Scotty 2 Hotty
Nice pop for Scotty, opening match so the crowd where up for it. I shouted out "Spikes a pussy", but I don't think it was loud enough to be picked up. Pretty straight forward match, Spike gets the win with the help of the ropes.

Orlando Jordan v Funaki
Pretty good heat for Orlando, nice pop for Funaki. Typical big man v little man match, Orlando picks up the win.

Torrie Wilson makes an appearance to hype up the crowd. Pretty pointless.

Bubba Ray Dudley v Rico
Great pop for Rico, pretty over in the UK. I couldn't see much of this match due to some kid in front of me with a big "I HATE THE DUDLEYS" sign. Bubba picks up the win with a Bubba Bomb after D-Von tripped Rico.

Smackdown
Smackdown opens with a backstage segment with Long and the Smackdown roster. Long announced that due to a bar fight (bullshit) that Cena will NOT be in the UK tonight (MAJOR heat as the arena was full of Cena signs and shirts). Long then announces a #1 contender match for the U.S Title...a Battle Royal...decent pop for that annoucement.
The opening video plays, followed by the pyro and the crowd go nuts. Welcome to Smackdown.

Rob Van Dam v Rene Dupree
Nice opener, RVD got a nice pop. I was digging the mix of Dupree's and Suzukis music, and Suzuki singing "Livin' in America" got a good laugh from the crowd. Pretty simple match, nothing spectacular. RVD picks up the win after the 5*.

Billy Kidman v Charlie Hass
Hass is selling a knee injury, which Kidman worked over. Not much offence from Hass. Kidman goes up to the top for a SSP, which brings out what i've read was Miss Jackie, but I swear this was Dawn Marie. Kidman ignores her, hits the SSP onto Hass's legs for the win. After the match, Hass refuses medical help, and walks out with his arms over a ref, and Dawn. Major pop for Charlie, he put his had on Dawn Marie's boob, and left it there all the way up the ramp.

Backstage Segment involving Reigns and The Sun's Page 3 Girls. Damn, I hate the British Accent when spoken after an American.

Battle Royal for the #1 Contendership for the U.S Title
Kurt Angle, Mark Jindrak, Luther Reigns, Scotty 2 Hotty, Orlando Jordan, RVD, Rey Mysterio, Bubba, D-Von, Kidman, Funaki, Kenzo Suzuki, Rene Dupree, Rico, Eddie Gurrero, Nunzio and Johnny Stamboli.
Comes down to Kurt and Rey. Rey picks up the win after some close near-eliminations.

Backstage Segment with Rey Mysterio. Carlito challages Rey for the belt, tonight. Rey accepts.

WWE Championship - Hardcore Match
Hardcore Holly v John Bradshaw Layfield (c)
I turned my back for this match. I gather JBL won after a chairshot.

In-Ring Segement - Paul Heyman and Heidenreich
Paul Heyman apologises for Heidenreichs behaviour, and forces him to read an apology. Heidenreich then goes insane, and starts hitting himself, and lies down in the ring...cut to commercial.
As we come back on-air, Heidenreich is still in the ring, he the calls out The Undertaker, who complies by turning the lights out, and we hear the gongs. Crowd goes nuts, and we have a match. Undertaker wins after a well received Tombstone.

United States Championship
Rey Mysterio vs Carlito Carribean Cool (c)
Decent bck and forth match, with the usual high spots from Rey. CCC retains with hel from the ropes.

Eddie Guerrero v Luther Reigns
Eddie wins via DQ after Jindrak runs in. Kurt soon follows, and a beatdown begins. Big Show makes the save, and cleans house to bring us to the end of Smackdown.

I actually agree with you here. I am a fan of the JBL character, but I also was pissed when he just walked out of the match with Hardcore Holly last week. He was actually being a decent heel, such as calling out Taker, even though it was a setup, but then he walks away from Hardcore of all people.

WHAT THE SHIT NO TAKER!!!

Though the Holly/JBL match wasn't so bad, it was a brawling match through and through but ofcourse JBL needed Virgil, err Orlando to help him set up Hardcore. Wicked Chairshot!

Did they air the segment with Heyman and Long?.If they did then it makes no sense why they wouldn't air the taker/heidenreich segment. It was dawn marie not jackie gayda that came done during the kidman/Haas match.

I saw the sign, Dave. Coolness. It was impossible to miss ... Tazz and Cole were talking about something or other, and the TPWW.net sign was right in between 'em.

Hmmm... I wonder why the 'Taker squash wasn't shown on TV.

And I caught the Haas thing as well. It looked really weird; the way his hand was positioned, I thought maybe Dawn had suffered a wardrobe malfunction or something. Which, um, is much better for one Charlie Haas. That is, until he gets home and Jackie has something to say about it....

An idea that just recently struck me as kind of odd:

Tazz and Michael Cole were trying to sell the idea that the hardcore match for the WWE championship was in Hardcore Holly's favor because it was his kind of match. Later, JBL would look upset in his interview. He complained that it was unfair that he was the only WWE champion to ever defend his title in a hardcore match.

My thought:

Didn't Bradshaw hold the Hardcore Championship only a short time before it was retired?

And he held the Hardcore Championship more recently than Hardcore Holly, which gives him a distinct advantage since it means he'd have had more recent experience.

Anyway, that's all irrelevant since JBL won, so we can just say that he was just psyching out Hardcore Holly. Anyway, I guess I have to give kudos to the WWE for the JBL character. First they bring in Gangrel and Vicera and they made me forget that JBL was once in the Ministry. Then they have this Hardcore Match and they make me forget that JBL was a Hardcore Champion.
