I was thinking about this last night, do you think it is disrespectful to do that? I mean its not like God favors one team over another, and i dont think players should do that. I dont think that they are being religious or anything when they point their fingers up to God, they are just showin off. thoughts?

Some of them do it to signify a dead relative. It's not really a big deal and I don't see how you could find that offensive.

The pointing isnt a problem with me. Its when the guy gets in front of the camera and starts thanking God for the win. As if God stopped by and guided your 3pointer in cause he's a Tarheel fan or something. Thats what chaps my ass.

lol yeah I remember after the Illinois Zona game I think it was Roger Powell got the camera to point to his shoes where he wrote a bunch of Bible verses on them.

I don't see how thats disrespectful at all. It's not like saying "God helped us win and not you", its saying "Thank you god for making me an amazing athlete"

As if God made the Tarheels more amazing then the Illinois team.

Who cares? Pointing to the sky doesn't always have to do with God anyway

To me the whole thanking God thing by these people is such hypacritical bullshit that you can just take all that shit and shove it. Yea, let me thank God for my win today, but tommorrow I'll be snorting crack, hitting the strip clubs and maybe get with some women, while cheating on my wife later on. I'm not just talking about about athletes and I'm not talking about all these famous "celebrities."

Maybe if everyone was a little more like Curt Schilling, who I might hate in "sports," but respect as a man, or Reggie White, then you can all start thanking god. But please, leave God out of your celebrations if you're going continue to live life in "the fast lane" or so to speak.

Yeah a racist homophobe like Reggie White is exactly who we should look up to.

lol, was he really a racist homophobe or is that like 2nd hand stuff? Actually, yea, bad example.

Ok, why don't we put in Pettite for White. I should've put him in there in the 1st place.

But tomorrow I'll be snorting crack and cheating on my wife

Way to stereotype professional athletes too.

Why does somebody thanking God bother you at all? I really can't see how that can be offensive at all.

Too much showboating these days any way you look at it.

What? Did you not see the comment I made about "I'm not talking about ALL celebrities." That's called stereotyping if you didn't know. It's taking EVERYONE In a certain group and saying they do this. I didn't say that at all.

And it's just a difference of opinion if you don't see how that's offensive. But I dunno, "Hey thanks God, but know I'm gonna commit adultry" just has hypocrisy written all over it. And if you don't think some of these guys are like that, then I really can't say anything.

Loose Cannon

and it's really not the thanking God that bothers me, it's the continued "Public" thanking of God that bothers me. Like everyone should know that "I love God and he's #1 in my life." It really should be kept private in my opinion.

The Outlaw

Why would it be kept private? If they are seriously a "Christian", that would be called spreading the gospel, which is what they are "supposed" to do.

Loose Cannon

And you just proved my exact point. Do you really believe all these people are "seriously Christian?" Cause I don't one bit. Trust me, I grew up in a Catholic family and being around my grandmother a lot, I know what "seriously Christian" is and some of these guys aren't that. Well you could always say, "Well how do you know how these guys are, you don't hang around them." Well after hearing stories, reading books, and hearing what close freinds of them have to say about them, it's enough for me.

Like I said, it's hypacritical to be publicly thanking God, when you're really not a serious Christian and it's disrespectful to those other guys, who do what's "right and moral" most of the time.

The Outlaw

Well, I would agree if these guys are just doing it to kind of...boost their image so to speak? Using it for all the wrong reasons and pretty disrespectful to guys who are Christians such as Schilling. I'm sure I could think of some more guys, but he's the one that comes to mind first.

But, I mean, pointing to the sky isn't so much disrespectful as would be for a guy to get on camera and thank god and preach or whatever and then have him turn around that same night and go off and do something that contradicts Christian beliefs.

Nah, it's my fault that I kind of went on a different topic in this thread. Pointing to the sky doesn't bother me or offend me, cause like Supreme said, it could be for a dead relative or something. That's completely fine with me. It's just the thanking God every oppurtunity they get that bothers me.
