Yeah, so VEL mentioned there should be a separate thread...so I guess the other one can be unstickyed now that the season is through, plus it'll be easier to sort playoff thoughts and whatnot in here.

Eh, I guess I'll get this started by reposting my preditctions from the other thread

LDS
-San Diego Padres @ St. Louis Cardinals (Cards should take this one EASILY because the Padres suck)
-Houston Astros @ Atlanta Braves (Awesome pitching vs. about 15 rookies in the pressure of the playoffs....I like the Stros here)
-New York Yankees @ Anaheim Angels (Definately the hardest 1st round series to predict, IMO....but I'll go with the Yanks)
-Boston Red Sox @ Chicago White Sox (Red Sox will probably pull through here)

LCS (ie: 2004 rehash)
-Houston Astros @ St. Louis Cardinals (Cards)
-Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees (After last year, this is too hard to predict...but it doesn't matter because I think..)

WS
-St. Louis Cardinals @ Whoever (Cards)

------------

I hope I'm wrong about another Yanks/Sox ALCS....but I can unfortunately see it happening :-\

I'd love to see the Pads pull a 1973 Mets and make it to the WS with such a bad record in comparison to the other teams, but that's more than unlikely

NL Division Series:

St. Louis over San Diego (3-1) : San Diego is barely a .500 team, St. Louis has the best record in baseball. Peavy will outduel Carpenter though.
Houston over Atlanta (3-0) : There's no way Atlanta is going to beat Clemens, Oswalt and Pettite.

AL Division Series:

New York over Los Angeles (3-1): I feel like Mussina is going to get shelled in Game 1. Chacon and Lackey will have a nice duel, with the Yankees winning. Johnson will shut down Anaheim while the Yankees destroy Washburn. Aaron Small always manages to win, so he'll win game 4 no matter what, not that the Yanks should have trouble with Santana or Byrd.

Chicago over Boston (3-2): Pitching and solid defense will prevail over an amazing offense.

NLCS
St. Louis over Houston (4-3): If Houston had a solid number 4 starter they'd win this series.

ALCS
New York over Chicago (4-1): The Yankees will just totally outslug the White Sox.

World Series
New York over St. Louis (4-3): It could really go either way, just picking New York because I'm a Yankee fan.

Just wondering.

Being from Chicago and as a lifelong White Sox fan, I can't fucking stand Daren Jackson as the TV color guy. I watch the games on TV with the mute on and I listen to the best radio duo in sports on ESPN1000: Ed Farmer & John Rooney.

Well, we remember what happened last year after the Sox got a butt whopping :)

I figured they'd drop 1 to the White Sox, and Clement was most likely.

Wouldn't be shocked if the sox advance to see Arroyo start in his place, on problem is, Clement hasn't come in relief and arroyo has. I'm just glad Francona kinda let it happen and didn't blow the entire bullpen.

Tomorow should be a good game, probably low scoring. Wells v. Buehrle.

I'm not worried yet. Sox lose tomorrow, then it's worry time, but the key is to split the first 2, that takes away the "home field" advantage.

The White Sox spanked the BoSox. There was some idea that the White Sox could never win just because they are the White Sox, but its just an example of the media bias. The Red Sox got all the coverage so you just assume that they will dominante, but they got handed to them today.

Joey Slugs was going off about the time of the game, but actually that may have even helped the Whites, because of all those fucked up shadows. Just a thought.

Finally, its not going to get any easier for Boston, Buehlre and Garcia aren't much of a step down. I think Boston will come back and make it interesting, but its just funny how the White Sox were just kind of expected to bow out by so many people.

It's like anything else though, the people you refer to have no clue what they're talking about.

Anyone who has watched the sox knows Clement has had a horrible 2nd half and his delivery has been off since getting hit in the head, plus you can steel at will and the White Sox play small ball.

I must admit, the Teck but was a nice suprise/move and I wonder if Millar didn't get out at 3rd if they might have kept the rally going.

That being said, the pitching for the White Sox doesn't get easier, but the flip side is the Sox pitching gets much better. Wells, Wakefield & Schilling.

I figured sox take it 3-1, and the 1 loss being one of the two in Chicago, and it being Clement doesn't suprise me.

Sox bounce back tomorrow and it's a best 2/3 and the sox have 2 of those at home.

that being said, putting up all those runs is a huge ego boost for the White Sox and should give them a lot of confidence.

Gonna be fun!

I think I'll take back everything I have said about the start times. Even after today's record breaking day, I think I like having the White Sox play early. It still gives us that "not enough repsect/underdog" look.

You are right BCWWF, the game wasn't supposed to end like it did. And you are spot on about it not getting easier for the Red Sox. They now have to deal with our core: Buehrle, Garland, & Garcia.

I would not be suprised to see Boston get swept right out of the first round (I doubt it, but our pitching is just that damn good). Take a nice few days rest while LA and NY beat eachother up.

it's not bitterness. all these two do is kiss the Yankees ass throughout the game. Even when Boston started their comeback last year, they were still riding high on the Yanks... even to the very end.

You are a NY fan, so you don't see it that way because you enjoy them talking about your team. It just annoys the fuck out of me. I'm glad that if the White Sox keep advancing I can just tune into our home radio team.

BCWWF: please shut up about the East Coast media bias already.

Joey Slugs was talking about how it was bad for the White Sox, but I added that the shadows during midday may be helpful to the White Sox.

Also, I find it a valid point that everybody expected the White Sox to be a dud because the Red Sox have been hyped up all year, but the Sox had the best record and the best staff in the year. That isn't me bitching about the media, it is me laughing at the people who don't know better and believe it.

Joey Slugs
10-04-2005, 08:28 PM
Just a little respect for my team. That's all I ask.

But in my own little way, I like having the underdogs (1 win off the best record in baseball mind you) to root for. Today was just an amazing game and there is a good chance that I will at the game tomorrow.

Joey Slugs was talking about how it was bad for the White Sox, but I added that the shadows during midday may be helpful to the White Sox.

I didn't say it was bad for us. I was just pissed that we didn't get the national game on the opening night.

It works out for us to play in the afternoon the next two games though because of how good Buehrle and Garcia are during day games.

I agree with Miz though, I don't think people know very much about Anahiem because nobody really gives a shit about the AL West (I hate to beat the dead horse LC, so I'll refrain from going on about that :p) but really Colon isn't unhittable, the other starters aren't amazing, and really Garrett Anderson and those guys aren't that good.

Joey Slugs
10-04-2005, 09:10 PM
I really want the Yankees to win this series (but I hope it goes 5 games) because it will get back to one of the greatest rivalries in sports: Chicago/New York (as long as we get through Boston).

If you think about it, outside of the fans hating each other, Boston/New York was never a big deal until recently. One of the great fights for dominance in baseball history has always be the White Sox and Yanks.

When the Yanks were going through their glory days in the 50s and 60s, who was fighting them tooth and nail the entire time? Not Boston (who where bottomfeeders for so long). It was Chicago.

If not for horrible ownership and bad managing, the White Sox might be giving NY a run for their money when it comes to total championships.

The White Sox aren't afraid of the knuckle and have hit Wakefield very hard the last few matchups.

Schilling is not the Schilling from last year. He has the grit and toughness but will that be enough? He might not even see action in the 05 playoffs.

and if Manny and Ortiz get in a car accident on their way to work...

If you're going to predict, you look at what's most probably, not what's "possible"

Wells has been strong the last month and is used to "pressure" actually, seems to do better under it.

Wakefield has been the team ace all year and has had like 1 bad outing in a month or two.

Schilling has been hot/cold but does better at Fenway.

Red Sox take today and 2 at home. Then again, 2yrs ago they droped the first 2 and took 3 in a row from Oakland, so anything is possible. (and no, The White Sox don't have better pitching then Oakland did).

Side Note: BCWWF - Media Bias, I like Joe Buck, Timmy is clearly a yankee butt swab. That being saidm it's not a east coast bias for the media, it's TV markets, plain and simple. As for the Sox getting all this hype? Yeah, when they play the yanks it sells and also, they are the defending champs! (small detail you seem to forget) Both reasons for extra coverage. That being said, if you watch the coverage you see the shape the pitching, especially then pen is in and understand they don't have the best chances unless someone comes up huge.

While I still stick by my LA pick, none of these 4 would shock me to go to the WS and well, then lose to Hou or STL.

It wouldn't let me post my whole message.

So obviously its not because all of the fans are up there. It was never me complaining about the Yankee's game, that was Joey Slugs, frankly I don't think that matters much who was prime time last night.

It is obvious that the media gives more attention to the north east teams, specifically those in New York and Boston. That is a bias, even if you don't think its bad that is a bias. There are a few good reasons for that, one because they are two of the biggest markets in the U.S., another because they both usually have good teams, three because they usually have pretty consistent fans, and four because ESPN and most other networks are based out of New York or very near to it.

Nowthen, when I was complaining about the "east coast bias" it was during the regular season, when there was rediculous coverage on a meaning less series between the Yankees and the Sox. I was just pointing out how come playoff time it distorts everybodys vision about whats going on. Basically all we know about the Angels is that Vlad is amazing and Colon "should" be the Cy Young winner because he has a lot of wins. But really they aren't that good of a team, most likely a first round upset. Then the other one is that people were expecting the White Sox to fold like a bad hand, because even though they are in the third biggest market they are a "small market team" and the Red Sox were hyped up all season as the greatest, and thats how the majority of the US saw them. So now the Angels are going to get spanked and the White Sox are doing some spanking, and everybody is surprised because this is all new to them.

I think sports would be a lot better if a West Coast sports network came up, because the way ESPN works is that is has to cater to that area. With time zones and all that, it makes it impossible for them to give the time of day to the West Coast and Texas and all of them, so if there was another predominantly West Coast network, maybe it would work out then. Just a thought.

For the most part I think ESPN is great, it was just that night when they played the Curt Schilling blood tape and made it into a five minute feature for a meaningless series that he wasn't even pitching in, and that was one of like five different features that night.

ALDG

White Sox > Red Sox 3-2 [ The first round is a best of five series I think. Basically I'm actually cheering Chicago in this match up at least frankly I would cheer anyone who is facing the Red Sox just to get Boston out of the playoffs]

Yanks > Angels 3-1

NLDG

Braves < Astros 3-1

Cards > Padres 4-0

ALCS

Yankees > White Sox 4-3 [Chicago is a real good team but the way I see Yankees are going to take it in game 7 sorry Joey Slugs]

NLCS

Cards > Astros

WS

Yankees > Cards 4-3 [Once again another real close one]

LC, with other sports I don't think its the same for a couple reasons.

1. Basketball has been dominated by L.A., Sacramento, Texas, and other western teams.

2. As for the NBA and NFL, they are nationally shown on other networks.

The NBA on TNT is awful, mainly the playoffs. When you start a HOME game at 10 p.m. on a weeknight, you are just bad.

But yeah, Yankees/White Sox ALCS, Yankees probably win, lose to Cards in WS.

Awful enough to make the playoffs and win their division.

Yeah, there my pick... not a strong pick, honestly I think it's a crap shoot and wouldn't put money on any of the 4.

Based on season performance, their pitching looks the best.

Yanks starters have been shakey, sox entire rotation and pen have been shakey and I just don't see the White Sox getting it done.

Don't have "all access" so can't see it.

Was this before or after one of my favorite moments when Byrnes missed home plate, then rather then trying to go for the plate, pushed Teck (who had the ball and tagged him out).

We were swept out of the playoffs in the 2000 ALDS by Seattle, won 2 road games against Toronto in the 1993 ALCS, and won once in Baltimore in the 1983 ALCS.

The last home game we won was game 1 of the 1959 World Series against the Dodgers.

The last playoff series we won was waaaaaaaaay back in 1917, which is the last time the White Sox won a championship.

The announcers were refering to the last home game we have won before yesturday's white wash, that of course being in '59 (which was an 11-0 win).

Well, not the best situation.... But, we've been here before... down 2-0 vs. Oakland in 2003, down 3-0 vs. NYY on 2004.

That being said, you can only do it so many times till it catches you.

That and this team (red sox) is not where near is as good as 2004, flip side is this White Sox team better then 2003 Oakland?

I dunno, Wake on Friday, Schilling on Sunday, both at home, Sox are strong at home (except against Toronto!) Could easily see this going back to Chicago for game 5. Of course, we saw what Contreras did to the sox in game #1.

That and as of right now, the sox don't have a game #5 pitcher. They already announced Clemment to the pen.

They could save Arroyo, but using Papelbon tonight, he might need him over the weekend. The most likely option is Wells on 3days rest.

There's also a chance that Saturday may get rained out. They're saying this would give Wells an extra day of rest? Wouldn't they just play Sunday/Monday rather then Sat/Mon?

Dunno, Tip my hat to the White Sox though, the "small ball" that people make fun of them for is what kept runners in scoring position and w/o that the error wouldn't have mean't anything.

I'm glad you commented on "you can only do it so many times" because that's all we are going to hear during the broadcast tomorrow. How the BoSox have made miracle comebacks before and this is no different blah blah blah.

Their backs are up against the monster and I think you are forgeting one major thing about the game tomorrow....

they have to face one of the best road pitchers in baseball, as well as one of the best day game pitchers, in Freddy Garcia.

The only reason I make fun of them is because they call it smart ball which is gay and because people think they won the division because Tad Iguchi can bunt and Scott Podsednik can steal alot of bases. The difference between this team and the past few years is they have great pitching now. Their offense was much better last year, they made the playoffs this year because of thier rotation.

Yeah and what you're forgetting about tomorrow is, Wake has had a great season, does great at home, got shelled his last outing and to top it off, the Sox hit MUCH better at home.

I originally said red sox in 4, now I'm thinking white sox in 5. A lot depends on who we end up pitching if we get to a game #5... if we get that rain day, it will probably be Wells, but he's already says he can't physically pitch Sunday. (why is there not a travel day?).

Hey, is Konerko a free agent? he'd look good in a Sox uniform :)

So, the sox need probably 2 SP's, a 1B and possible a CF and 3B.

I think if they don't resign Muellar, we'll see Youkilis at 3B.

Also wouldn't be shocked to see Foulke try being a SP instead of a Closer.

People brush it off, but the park is a huge source of income.

Given, for teams that own their own Networks, TV revenue from them is big.

If he did, isn't that saying that El Duqe didn't pitch that great?

I thought El Duqe was awesome and shut them down, but if Damon choked, then El Duqe couldn't have just been a better pitcher, because if he was better, it wouldn't be a choke?

don't really care, just find it funny, the same people who pull the "my team/player didn't choke, he/they just faced a better person/team" are doing the opposite of what they preach.
