Do the Mets think that signing 3/4 the league is going to stop them from finishing 2nd behind Atlanta's AAA team

Boy would I love the Jays to get Vazquez
The Miz

Vazquez wants to be as close to PR as possible, he said he'd only be traded to an east coast team but I don't think he meant back to Canada.
If I were the Jays I wouldn't want him anyway, he's sucked the last 2 years and there are much better available pitchers with the kind of money they intend of spending.

Sorry, gotta laugh a little here. Wish I had time to go searching.
This is the same Vazquez that when he went to the Yanks, Hero gave me a lashing because I felt he wouldn't be as good in NY, not because the "pressure" of NY, but because it's easier to pitch in the NL.. Hero told me how he's watched him and he'll be fine... etc... etc...
hmm... guess Hero was right on this one... :p

Nope, but I figure since everyone points out when I'm wrong, like they have never been, I should return the favor once in awhile.

I still say he's a good pitcher, but I didn't realize how much money he going to be making. I wouldn't want T.O. to spend that kind of money on him.

that and it's not often you tell me I'm right and you're wrong, so I just like hearing it again :p

He didn't have that bad a year this year :wtf: The wins weren't there, but he did over 200 innings, had close to 200 strike outs. Highish ERA and WHIP, yeah. He gives up way too many hits the last couple years.
I'd take him on my team, like I said, if it wasn't for the high salary he'll be commanding.
I think he's a guy that's not adapting to the fact his original 'stuff' isn't getting him the outs it used to regularly. He needs to adapt and learn new pitches. That's what I think.
His last 3 years...

Not to much of a surprise to me. Ortiz had a huge year, but he doesn't hardly play the field. Obviously, that was probably the deciding factor on why A-Rod got it and Ortiz didn't.

So they actually did the trade. Cameron for Nady. We gave up a fast, gold glove outfielder for a younger "first baseman/outfielder" with pretty equal offensive numbers I guess. We don't really need a first baseman...I guess if Mike Jacobs struggles or we need depth in OF or something, he would help?

He's 27 and like 2 years ago was one of MLB's top prospects. He hasn't lived up to his hype but he also hasn't gotten consistent playing time or a consistent position. He is an okay outfielder, a below average first baseman, and a shit third baseman. He has shown tons of power but he has also sucked bad against RHP.

He's not arguing that it has nothing to do with it, he's arguing that it shouldn't be the be all end all to winning a gold glove
Exactly.
Fielding percentage does not measure the difficulty of plays the fielder made.
Fielding percentage does not tell you if a player's errors were on routine grounders or impossible hops
Fielding percentage does not tell you if the scorekeeper was being generous or being too harsh
(for infielders) Fielding percentage does not measure the quality of your first baseman, who can turn alot of errors into putouts.
Fielding percentage does not tell you how strong or weak a guys arm is, how quick his hands are when turning two, how he plays bad hops, how well he can range to his right, etc. Most importantly, fielding percentage does not tell you how many runs a fielder has saved.
Fielding percentage is simply not a good measure of defense. If one shortstop has a .992 fielding percentage and another has a .975, that tells me nothing. I will take Julio Lugo and his .968 over almost any shortstop in the AL.
Every stat has its flaws but fielding percentage is way more flawed than most.

It's a little known fact, but the Jays are maybe the richest, at least one of the richest teams in baseball. They are owned by Rogers' Cable. A multi Billion dollar company. They've always been wise, if not prudish spenders. They did say however that they were going to give Richardi a larger budget this coming season.

Great 1B. Don't know why you'd be sad about that. Wish the Jays never got rid of him. Oddly enough it was because of money, now they're looking to be a little more generous with their payroll. Carlos was making 18 million in his last years with the Jays though. Tough to justify that.

I'm angry because we just had a rookie Mike Jacobs come in the middle of the season and put up ridiculous numbers at 1B. I don't understand why we are looking for a first baseman. We have so many other priorities that need to be filled first and if you ask me, Mike Jacobs should have the starting job next year. The Mets are ridiculous though.

Riccardi is getting an extra 20 million in payroll. ESPN says that two teams have offered AJ 5 year deals, the Blue Jays for sure (5 years 50 million) and another one that isn't known yet.
I dunno, I'd love a starting pitcher and maybe if Burnett reunites with a coach he likes (Arnsberg was his pitching coach in Florida) then he might be a great and consistent pitcher but I don't see him worth that kind of commitment. Our starting rotation is good enough to wait for something better with Halladay, Bush, Towers and Chacin with Pete Walker in odd starts.
I think the biggest job of the offseason is going to be moving Batista and Hinske and finding a good bat somewhere

Bush, Chacin and Towers aren't quite ready for primetime. Chacin has one year under his belt and if he showed anything, it's that he tires. Towers and Bush are fringe starters at best, I love their heart, but the Jays need another reliable pitcher. Someone that can eat up innings and the like. Don't forget Lilly. Not sure if he's on his way out or if he'll be back in the rotation. Hope he's traded along with the guys you mentioned.

Anyways, I hope we get Delgado. He should give us the big bat in the offense we sorely need.
Shame about Jacobs though. He'd be a great asset off the bench, though I wouldn't be shocked if Jacobs were sent out for Delgado. If for some reason the Mets still had him and they didn't get one of the catchers they wanted (Bengie, Ramon, trade for Pudge), they COULD have Jacobs start at catcher to keep his bat in the lineup
Problem is, he's worse than Piazza from what I heard (terrible at throwing like Piazza, and without the good game-calling abilities Piazza had)

An unofficial list of players that have been brough up on the Twins table:
Mike Piazza
Tony Graffanino
Bill Mueller
Rondell White
Nomar Garciapara
Come spring training, they might take a look at Jim Thome, but they don't want to trade until he can for sure play.
Yahoo! had the Twins interested in Troy Glaus, but that is obviously bullshit. His name has never come up in local media, and I don't know why they would spend a lot of money on an injury prone player.
We need a couple guys, and the short list I listed above has them. Graffanino at 2nd and Mueller at 3rd, and then if we could add Piazza as well, we would be REALLY good. The first two guys are neccessary, because we need to fill at least two of the three vacancies in the infield, and then we need some sort of a power bat to DH.
1. Shannon Stewart
2. Joe Mauer
3. Bill Mueller
4. Justin Morneau
5. Mike Piazza
6. Torii Hunter
7. Tony Grafanino
8. Whoever ends up playing right field
9. Nick Punto
1. Johan Santana
2. Brad Radke
3. Carlos Silva
4. Scott Baker
5. Kyle Lohse (likely to get traded, where either J.D. Durbin or Francisco Lariano step in)
RP. Matt Guirrier
RP. Juan Rincon
RP. Jesse Crain
RP. J.C. Romero

Nov 19 - A pair of baseball sources have told the Palm Beach Post that the Marlins are close to dealing right-hander Josh Beckett to the Texas Rangers along with third baseman Mike Lowell for third baseman Hank Blalock and a top pitching prospect. One source told the Post that Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and Rangers owner Tom Hicks have been brokering the deal over the last few days, but the deal may not happen because Texas is unwilling to part with its pitching prospects, believed to be either left-hander John Danks, the Rangers? first-round pick in 2003, or Thomas Diamond, their first-round pick in 2004.
Beckett, the 2003 World Series MVP, is a native of Spring, Texas. He was 15-8 with a 3.38 ERA last season. Blalock turns 25 on Monday, and is coming off a season in which he hit 25 homers with 92 RBI and a .263 batting average.

Wagner will make the trip with his agent, Bean Stringfellow, and their wives. He will be looking at housing and schools in the area and then head back to his home in Virginia on Tuesday.
After meeting at Wagner's Virginia home on Wednesday, the Phillies and Wagner surprisingly agreed to leave their previous offer (two years, with a vesting option that could bring the total to $27 million over three years) on the table, at least for now, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports.
The Mets are in position to outbid the Phillies, and have hinted they're willing to guarantee a fourth season -- something the Phillies are unlikely to do. Stringfellow said Wagner is looking for atleast a three-year deal with a no-trade clause.

I wouldn't be suprised to see the Rangers front office getting involved in trying to sign Loazia & Morris, with a package including Soriano out there to make a trade for another starter/second base option (if both FAs fall away from them).

Nov 21 - According to the Miami Herald, a deal is "on the table" in which Florida -- in an effort to shed payroll -- would send right-hander Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell to Texas for third baseman Hank Blalock and one of two pitching prospects, John Danks or Thomas Diamond. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and the Boston Herald both report that the left-handed Danks, the Rangers' first-round pick in 2003, is the most likely to go in the deal. Sources say the deal is close. The Rangers, unwilling to part with either pitching prospect, are thought to be working with a third team for a pitcher who could be dealt to Florida to complete the trade. According to the Palm Beach Post, to avoid losing either Danks or Diamond, the Rangers could dangle first baseman Adrian Gonzalez as trade bait to a third team for pitchers to flip to Florida. The Post says the Rangers and Marlins also have discussed scenarios that include center fielder Juan Pierre in the deal.
If the trade with Texas falls apart, the Boston Herald has reported that the Marlins are considering a proposal to send Beckett and Lowell to Boston for shortstop Hanley Ramirez and a pitching prospect, either righty Anibal Sanchez or lefty Jon Lester. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that another club open to a Lowell-Beckett package is the Tigers, while the Angels, Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies, Pirates and Giants could enter the bidding as well.
The Marlins reportedly are trying to pare 25 percent of their payroll, and trading Lowell -- who is owed $18 million over the next two years -- is central to any deal. They would also like to free up money in order to lock up Dontrelle Willis to a new contract.

The Marlins could also ask for right-hander Aaron Heilman, first baseman Mike Jacobs or infielder Chris Woodward as part of a deal for Delgado.
The Newark Star-Ledger reported that Mets GM Omar Minaya has spent a considerable amount of time talking to Florida about Delgado. Any team that would acquire Delgado would likely have to assume the rest of his contract. Delgado is due $13.5 million in 2006, $14.5M in 2007 and $16M in 2008. The Orioles are also suitors for Delgado, although they are undecided whether or not they want to part with a top pitching prospect such as left-hander Adam Loewen or right-hander Hayden Penn, according to the Palm Beach Post.

How do you see Lowell effecting Damon?
3rd base v. Center Field?
The more I hear from Borus the more I think he's gone, but I don't know if anyone will give him what he's asking so he might be back.
Borus did a binder on Damon that he passed out. Some of the chapter titles were funny.
"Why johnny damon is better then rickey henderson".
"Why johnny damon is the most durable CF in the majors and deserves a 7yr deal"
"Johnny damon will have started the most games of any CF before his carrer is over"
"Johnny damon will get hit 3000hit in (I think he said 2009 or sumthin)"
just some funny stuff.
The sox feel the over payed a bit for Variteck (years/dollars) but what he means to the team/pitching it was worth it.
They wont over pay for Damon.
I didn't realise Lowell won a gold glove last year.
They said that 3days after the season this year, he drove somewhere to see his minor league hitting coach to work on his hitting. That during the season almost every game he had a different stance and even tried batting with one contact lens thinking it might help his seeing the ball somehow.
He turns it around, you have a good feilder, .275 hitter, capable of 20-30HR... That along with the pitching are big lifts for the sox.
If Damon does walk, they have to address the leadoff hitter position.

I love this trade for the Mets.
We fill two of our needs (power bat and 1st baseman) while still keeping Milledge. Also, Billy Wagner has said that he wants to be on a team that can make it to the postseason, and with the acquistion of Delgado, the Mets may have proved to him that they are willing to spend to get the offense they need. The Mets probably could have won 12-13 more games last season if Delgado was on the team. They just added a TON of run support.
I will admit, it's hard to say goodbye to Jacobs and Petit. However, there's a chance they may never pan out as planned. Jacobs is the one that worries me the most, as his swing reminded me of Chipper Jones. Hopefully Jacobs won't become the Chipper Jones of the Marlins and kill the Mets every time.
My only other concern is his reaction to the city. Listening to the radio, several fans have already stated that they will boo the crap out of Delgado from the get-go and not even give him a chance. If the pressure were to get to Delgado and he were to produde a Beltran-2005 type season, the fans would kill him and he'd probably demand a trade.

He's already said Delgado will be on the team, I'm guessing if we were to give up Manny without dealing Milledge, we'd have to include Floyd in there, though he's on the last year in his deal. I'd try and package together something to bring Manny and Clement to NY, but I'd keep Milledge at all costs. Maybe they want youth and would rather take Nady or Diaz? I dunno.
I won't lie though, the thought of this lineup has me salivating:
SS - Reyes (Switch)
CF - Beltran (Switch)
RF - Manny (Right)
1B - Delgado (Left)
3B - Wright (Right)
LF - Floyd (Left)
C - Hernandez/Molina (Right)
2B - Matsui/Hernandez/Keppinger (Switch...or Right if it's Keppinger)
Constantly giving managers headaches with that lineup

The White Sox made the first move in trying to get Konerko back, offering him a four-year, $52 million deal, the Daily Southtown recent reported. But Konerko is intent on finding out how much he's worth on the open market.

Ok it's official, Loaiza to the A's, 3 years at $7 mil per.
This could be really good or really bad. Signing Loaiza leads me to believe they will trade Zito for a big bat and that Beane isn't sold on Dan Meyer as the #5. If they trade Zito for Dunn, I'm all for it.
I hope this doesn't mean he intends on trading Saarloos for a not-quite-as-big bat or prospects. The A's are ready to contend in 06 but they need a big bat to do it. Zito is expendable, and its better to trade him now than let him walk next season and get draft picks that won't help until 09.
Also, $7 mil is way too much for this guy.
But if what I think Beane is going to do is true, this is a very good lineup:
1. Ellis 2B
2. Crosby SS
3. Kotsay CF
4. Dunn DH/RF/1B
5. Chavez 3B
6. Swisher RF/DH/1B
7. Payton LF
8. Johnson 1B/DH
9. Kendall C
1. Harden
2. Blanton
3. Haren
4. Loaiza
5. Saarloos
6. (Harden's inevitable injury) Kennedy/Meyer/Rheinecker

I've heard all the rumors of Giles playing CF if he comes here which I still don't think will happen. Would be nice to see Sheffield at DH and Giles in RF if he does sign, but Torre always needs flexibility at DH for Giambi, Posada, etc...
An outfield of Matsui, Giles, and Sheffield would not be very pretty at all defensively.

ALCS MVP Paul Konerko rejected the Orioles' latest contract offer, a five-year deal worth $65 million, the Baltimore Sun reported on its Web site late Tuesday night.
According to the Sun, the Orioles are believed to have made the most lucrative offer to Konerko.
The Angels, who along with the Orioles and the White Sox are believed to be the only three teams in the hunt for Konerko, have reportedly offered a five-year deal worth $60 million. Konerko spent Tuesday afternoon in Anaheim meeting with Angels officials, including manager Mike Scioscia and general manager Bill Stoneman, the Los Angeles Times is reporting in its Wednesday editions.
Craig Landis, Konerko's agent, could not be reached for comment. Orioles executive vice president Mike Flanagan declined to discuss any specifics of the Orioles' negotiations with Konerko, acknowledging only that the club is still in ongoing talks with Konerko and several other free agents.
I hope to god that the sox upped their offer. We should find out by the start of the WM next week.

What does Anaheim have to do with Oakland? They haven't been able to beat them the last 5 years. 2005 was the first time in a while the White Sox were obviously better than Oakland and Oakland still won.
It's impossible to talk about repeats on December 1st. The White Sox may or may not have gotten better, they lost one of their best players and gained one who was injured almost all last year. A bunch of AL teams have improved themselves already. Way too soon to say anything.

Manny-for-Abreu 'highly unlikely'
Dec 1 - ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports that a swap of Bobby Abreu for Manny Ramirez is "highly unlikely," according to a baseball official who has spoken with both clubs. The deal was proposed by the Red Sox but quickly shot down, the official said, for several reasons. The primary reason is that the Phillies have been telling teams they are only interested in trading Abreu for top-of-the-rotation starting pitching. The second is that there is a major money imbalance. Ramirez has $57 million coming over the next three years. Abreu has two years, $30 million left on his deal. Both players can veto any trades.
The only way this trade could happen, then, is if the Red Sox were interested in trading a starting pitcher along with Ramirez, AND evening out all the money.
Meanwhile, Ramirez officially has put his $6.9 million condominium in Boston on the market, the Boston Globe reports. Ramirez wants to be traded, and his wish is to play for the Angels or the Mariners, the Boston Herald reports.
Teammate David Ortiz thinks Ramirez won't be in left field for the Red Sox come Opening Day. "Manny is not returning to Boston," Ortiz said recently. "Manny lives a difficult situation that only he and his family know about, and he does not want to play there."
