View Full Version : Batista/Rey vs MNM (Spoilers Inside)

So Batista and Rey Mysterio won the tag titles tonight. But that's not what I'm here to talk about. I wanted to comment on the match itself.
In my opinion, this was the best tag match of the year. You had a great story told, a great mixture of intensity and comedy, and  innovative maneuvers!
What really got me was how they didn't stick with the same rest holds and moves like they usually do. I counted at least four creative moves, including that rare REVERSE hurricanrana that I've almost never seen done. But the other moves--using the ropes to springboard into a powerbomb; a spinning flab jack; standing enziguris--weren't really major spots at all, just small twists on typical moves that add intrigue.
And that's what was missing for a long while. We had the same matches, same moves, same everything. I've long maintained that matches would be great if people incorporated a new move or a variation of a move every few weeks, rather than using the same seven part moveset no matter how the wrestler is. Tonight featured that. Heck, even Batista has started incorporating a spear in his moveset, so :y: to that.
Johnny Nitro also impressed me a TON tonight. He's got some fantastic athleticism and can perform some great Cruiser-type moves. The guy can definitely go, and to think... he (and Matt Capoeli?) are the only Tough Enough guys still in the compnay, and they didn't even win.
Anyway, I'm hoping this continues a rebirth in exciting and non-repetitive matches. After 2003's rash of neck injuries, someone decided that only slow matches would be ok, but obviously, that hasn't prevented injuries, since people still get injured. So I hope they continue to let the wrestlers go and perform for us.
Tonight's tag match showed that you don't have to have 65 Amazing Red-style spots to have an "innovative" match. The crowd was all over both teams, and even though part of this is because of their interesting characters, I feel that almost everyone else on the WWE roster can garner the same excitement and attention if they step up their games. Sure, we do have some crap wrestlers, but we also have some great wrestlers, and if you put them in the right conditions, you're sure to get an entertaining match.

I definately agree, I thought the match was real good. And like you said, I thought it was a lot of fun to watch because the only thing that seemed common (as compared to recent tag matches) was the hot tag to Batista at the end.
Oh, and  at Rey's reverse hurricanrana.

The best part about it is Batisa only got in the ring when he was needed.

To go into more depth with what I said for no reason what so ever <i>(thanks for the red dot)</i>... Golly Gee, since Batista isn't totally at his best right now since he's wrestling with an injury, and since his move set is stale as hell anyways, seeing Rey and MNM in the ring was awesome. I just don't know why they gave the dude with an injury who could use some time off two titles. Less time in the ring for Batista, the more time for Rey, and the lower chance of Batista getting seriously hurt.
MNM are so freakin good, the potential is there for them to be mega-over. Give them back the belts, feud them with the 'Cools, and get both groups over...
Nitro has improved so much...

Yeh, Nitro has improved massively while Mercury has always been impressive. I've been a Matthews/Mercury mark from back in ECW and I had my doubts about teaming him with the green dude from TE3, but they've done well.
I do have some questions about why the titles needed to change hands however. Does this mean MNM willl still feud with the 'Cools this sunday. It wasn't a particularly personal feud as the emphasis was mostly on the 'we want your title belts' angle so I don't know. Just seems like a bit wasteful hyping it up for the previous three weeks.

yeah, they're still facing them at Armageddon.

Yeh, they're still facing them - but why? From an entertainment viewpoint it's still going to be a great match, but the logic behind it... :-\
I think they're retarded for switching the belts like this.

CC, they're still facing them because if you look at the bigger picture, it fills up the ppv card and it gives them somehting to do.They could just make it a no.1 contenders match. It does seem like it was a rushed decision though,i reckon somebody just said 'hey, i just realised, if we had batista and rey win the tag titles, it will be champions v champions at Armageddon!' while forgetting there was already a tag title match in place.
It was definately a good match though, I agree with the original post.I think the reason why the two teams were so good, is because the two teams have been teaming with each other for a while, the tag matches got boring when the WWE decided to split the tag teams up and draft them on seperate shows and as a result they had to throw tag teams together when they have no idea how to put together a tag team match because they're used to singles competition.
I've always been a fan of MNM, they were a proper team that was needed at the right time.Batista&Rey is a perfect combination to.

You're right Corkscrewed, that was definately Tag Team Match of the Year for me. Much like Gohan3K and TerreanRich, I too wouldn't mind seeing these 4 go at it again (although I just wanna see them have a wrestling match).

It was a fantastic match. One thing I kept thinking during the match was "how the Hell did Johnny Nitro get so good so quickly?", I mean Nitro's always been good, but he's only been in the business for what, a few years now? Tag team stuff can do that to you, I guess.
I think they should make MNM vs. The Mexicools a Tag Team Turmoil Match, with all the other tag teams as well.

I liked the Backbreaker/Russian Leg Sweep combo Nitro(I think it was Nitro) did, that was great.

That match amazed me. I didn't start liking MNM until a couple of weeks ago, when I finally saw that they had potential. I watched them in the ring, and they made their oponents look better than what they are.
Their match on Smackdown made me officially like them. I think them vs the Mexicools could be an even better match that this past Smackdown's.
On a completely unrelated not, Ron Killings should never talk.

Well, lemme take a shot at this one......
It has been said tha The Juice isn't the most popular person on the roster as of late. So let's take away some of the glam behind the Mexicools/MNM match. No, it's not Juvi's match, but in DX's hay day if The New Age Outlaws did the job to The Bushwhackers it would make everyone in DX look stupid.
You lie with dogs, you get the fleas.
No, I'm NOT saying MNM ranks right up there with The Bushwhackers, but ya get the idea. The Mexis lose, Juvi's team loses heat.

It was fucking solid. Rey and Batista have good chemistry together, though I miss the Batista/Eddie combination. :'(
That aside, the match was entertaining, and I find MNM to be pretty boring en generale.

Didn't we learn that in '97?
I wonder who Rey has pictures of to pull off that second rope reverse rana.

As horrible as this might sound, you think it might be Eddie sympathy pull?

I doubt it. Anyway, it's not like it's that dangerous of a move, as Nitro didn't take a shouler/head bump like they do in Japan, but basically did a moonsault sell.

I think we need to give props to Batista. He stuck it to MNM, and stuck it in Melina in the same night.
