Thumbs up Batista/Rey vs MNM (Spoilers Inside)

So Batista and Rey Mysterio won the tag titles tonight. But that's not what I'm here to talk about. I wanted to comment on the match itself.

In my opinion, this was the best tag match of the year. You had a great story told, a great mixture of intensity and comedy, and innovative maneuvers!

What really got me was how they didn't stick with the same rest holds and moves like they usually do. I counted at least four creative moves, including that rare REVERSE hurricanrana that I've almost never seen done. But the other moves--using the ropes to springboard into a powerbomb; a spinning flab jack; standing enziguris--weren't really major spots at all, just small twists on typical moves that add intrigue.

And that's what was missing for a long while. We had the same matches, same moves, same everything. I've long maintained that matches would be great if people incorporated a new move or a variation of a move every few weeks, rather than using the same seven part moveset no matter how the wrestler is. Tonight featured that. Heck, even Batista has started incorporating a spear in his moveset, so to that.

Johnny Nitro also impressed me a TON tonight. He's got some fantastic athleticism and can perform some great Cruiser-type moves. The guy can definitely go, and to think... he (and Matt Capoeli?) are the only Tough Enough guys still in the compnay, and they didn't even win.

Anyway, I'm hoping this continues a rebirth in exciting and non-repetitive matches. After 2003's rash of neck injuries, someone decided that only slow matches would be ok, but obviously, that hasn't prevented injuries, since people still get injured. So I hope they continue to let the wrestlers go and perform for us.

Tonight's tag match showed that you don't have to have 65 Amazing Red-style spots to have an "innovative" match. The crowd was all over both teams, and even though part of this is because of their interesting characters, I feel that almost everyone else on the WWE roster can garner the same excitement and attention if they step up their games. Sure, we do have some crap wrestlers, but we also have some great wrestlers, and if you put them in the right conditions, you're sure to get an entertaining match.
