View Full Version : How to give SmackDown! some name power...

Alright, so SmackDown! needs some assistance (once more). How do you help them out? I would probably have Theodore Long claim a prize for winning the inter-brand feud. That prize? All the superstars SmackDown! lost in the draft lottery, including those in the huge trade, that are not currently RAW Champions.
So SmackDown! essentially gets back Kurt Angle, Carlito, Rob Van Dam (a few people wouldn't be too happy with that, but he would arguably get a better push on SmackDown!), Chavo Guerrero, Danny Basham & Rene Dupree. I don't think I am missing anyone. Candice and Torrie could be argued as well, but you could consider them a seperate trade as to leave them doing their thing on RAW. Again, you could argue Daivari was involved in the draft, and is no longer on SD!, so he should come back (provided UPN would allow it).
That gives SmackDown! three or four main eventers (depending on whether or not you include being involved in Angle's antics and the occasional tag team headliner main eventing), more potential cruiserweights, two potential tag team reformations (The Basham Brothers and La Resistance respectfully, although feuds with their old partners in the mid-card would probably benefit the overall product more than them re-joining the tag ranks) and it frees up some room on RAW for the forgotten guys like Val Venis, Trevor Murdoch & Lance Cade.
What would you do to help SmackDown! recover from its current lack of roster depth?

They had name power. They ruined it.
If they get more, they will ruin it. Jericho, Hassan, etc., will go down just like everyone else on the God Damned show.

I wouldn't go as far as that, that would make the draft pointless.
Just wait till May, there should be another draft, I can really see this happening.
RAW GETS:
Lashley.
Ken Kennedy.
JBL.
Boogeyman.
SD GETS:
Kurt Angle.
John Cena.
Chavo Guerrero.
Carlito.

Smackdown will never recover. Seriously, it's shit.
in the next year it will be kicked off upn when the contract expires so why would they want to raid raw more.

So they could push some of Smackdown's talent on Raw?
I crack me up.

I heard that Friday Night Smackdown has been giving UPN their best ratings on a Friday in years, I would've thought that would make them renew?

By that logic, the WWE would still have RAW on Spike.

personally i prefer Smackdown to Raw...
even thou my favourite wrestler is raw,
Reasons
1, Better champ by far...
2, the regal and benoit matches are classic even thou they are on velocity...
3, Mexicools, i like them alot, The Juice owns
4, The boogeyman

I don't think that they really need much star power. There champion is much more believable, they have some good tag team champions, and the cruiserweight division (even though it always seems to be in a rut).
They have Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, JBL, Benoit, Booker T and emerging stars like Lashley and Kennedy.
If they were to have one star move over from Raw, I'd make it Shelton Benjamin...you could push him to the US title first and he could have some good matches with Benoit, Regal, Mysterio.

I think Smackdown has loads of potential, Randy Orton is the way better prospect out of him and Cena, they have the better champ at the minute, sending down a few like Edge (Money in the Bank shot) and getting RVD when he returns should be enough to make the top of the card more varied.
Bottom of the card wise, its good, has lots of interesting characters like Simon Dean, Kid Kash and the Mexicools, have Lashley as well, who will be pushed to the moon this year.

Ummm no. SD just lost all them in the last draft, that would be stupid.

Kurt Angle has already had to suffer through being on Smackdown, why would you want to make him do it again?
I think SD! is doing pretty good at the mo!
Granted they could do with a couple of names to replace Xtian, Hassan and Eddie but I think there are other things that could be done...
1. LEGENDS -- Now I know that bringing back a face from the past is a quick fix and cheap way to generate a ratings spike but everytime a 'Legend' appears on WWE TV they do it on Raw!! It's as if they're saying "I'm not appearing on SD! its the number two show!" and so SD! looks subpar! I'd imagine a few more viewers tuning in if they announced 'NEXT WEEK THE ROCK RETURNS TO SMACKDOWN!'
2. McMAHONS -- As sick as people get of seeing Vince et al, I think it would give SD! a boost to have Vinny make an appearance once in a while! For the same reasons above it makes SD! look like an inferior show cos McMahon 'can't be bothered' to go down there!
3. CRUISERWEIGHTS -- Fuck the Junior Division USE THE CRUISERWEIGHTS!
This '3-POINT POST' has been sponsered by XL Productions.
Make the show live. Give it a feeling that anything can happen rather than people finding out there is a big suprise or etc. happening 2 days before it airs.

Making it live won't change anything.
Making it live won't change anything.
Well I bet it would give the creative team more insentive, rather that following the phrase, "Don't worry about it...I bet they make it look better in editting."

I hope they let Paul Heyman head the writing team there again. Who cares if he makes it a competition between RAW & SmackDown!? Competition is good, and it's not like getting a lot more people to watch SD! (a product you are putting out) is a bad thing.

Bring back Brock Lesnar.
Bringing back Brock Lesnar & Chris Jericho would get it done, but I don't know if that is an option the WWE sees. I wish they would do it, though.

Because Smackdown was HIS show, even when he wasn't in the main event, you watched Smackdown for Kurt Angle, because you were guaranteed a great wrestling match, and personally, Angle would save SD if he returned.

They moved it to Fridays for "Everybody Hates Chris." Odds are bad just for that fact.
Apparently, they're about to premeire a new show on Tuesday nights, so I don't see a swap any time soon.

Besides, if it was "live," You'd have to watch it at 1 AM or on tape, where they could just edit it. And arent the UK channels famous for just that?
I used to read the SD spoilers, when it got boring (thinking it was because of the spoilers) I decided not to read them. There was no improvement, i'm reading the spoilers again.

Spoilers really don't change much, since the WWE regularly botches surprise anyway.
I don't read spoilers on principle alone, but it still hasn't saved the show for me.

I'm of the opinion that smackdown is doomed. Not because of shoddy writing, though that doesn't help. Not because its is and is treated like a second rate show, that does not help either.
Its the timeslot, pure and simple. Friday night is a horrible timeslot, and the prroduct just isn't good enough to make people drop what they're doing to watch the damn show. To me, its only a matter of time for SD

Going back to the original comment, does Smackdown really need adding to. Considering that they lost Christian, Hassan and then Eddie :(, they have a good roster with a lotof potential...maybe just one star to bolster the ranks, but that would be all it needs....Shelton!!!

Sky, who have the rights to broadcast in the UK, have just moved Raw to Thursdays from live showings on Monday night (at about 2am) because no-one was watching the dam thing.
It wouldn't make a difference to UK viewers at all, but US viewers obviously are affected. I'd like to see SD moved to a live slot, even if under pressure from UPN, if that meant filming live on the friday. I've read from numerous interviews that the pressure and competition of performing live brings the best from the wrestlers and the WWE team.
So why not? It couldn't hurt to attempt a 3 month trial of live shows.

I know whether it was live wouldn't affect me, but I just want SD to do well, because I've been watching the show long before I started watching Raw. I think that it not being live affects it.
I've read spoilers. Guys go:
Shit show, not watching that.
If they didn't know it was shit SD would pick up more ratings.

To be honest, I'm neither a fan of Smackdown or Raw recently. But knowing the quality of the roster on Smackdown (judging by Velocity, which is perhaps the only show I make time for) I think Smackdown has the potential to do so much better.
Why not try putting the show on live for a trial period and see how the fans and talent react?

i can't just blame lack of talent for Smackdown's lack of appeal.
when they had Christian (who could be a world champ now),
they buried him.
Smackdown has KK (damn injury), Beniot, Orton, Lashley, and Batista.
plus if they push chavo, that's pretty good on the Title Fight.

Why do you think he was suffering on SmackDown to begin with? He was in what could've been the feud of the year in 2003 between him and Lesner (at least in my opinion, it was), was given some good feuds with Eddie, and was one of the SD staples. I think he had it rather good.
I would say on RAW he's suffering. He is forced to be a stale heel that is feuding with John Cena.

Oh, I have to say something concerning this, as well.
I think that, seeing a thread title for Edge, I remembered about something I was thinking about for some time.
Maybe they want Edge to use the Money In The Bank for WM 22 because they want SmackDown to win the Royal Rumble this year and have THE Main Event at WrestleMania this year. I would think thatr this could be a very good way to give SD more name power, and if they don't have that in mind, to consider it.
Reason it would work is because RAW has been the holder of the Rumble victory AND thus the WM Main Event for two years in a row. That may have given them the big name reconigion, because of the calibur that Vince wants WM to be. And since they should make Edge want his shot at a PPV, and I don't see him using it for Royal Rumble, and No Way Out, as far as I know, will be SD again, so then next time he could do it on a PPV is Mania. That will leave the door open for SD to get that name power by winning that slot for the WM ME.

This is what needs to be done by all at WWE to make Smackdown a better show.
#Make it live on Friday Nights.
#Bring in someone big like Mick Foley to be General Manager. (Keep T Long in another capacity.)
#Have more Cruiserweight matches. (about 2 every week).
#Have Ken Kennedy (Sorry Mr), do a chat show type segment called The Kennedy Show, and make it controversial).
#Make Lashley a contender to the WHC.
#Bring back the Hardcore Title and put it on SD. This would make it a wee bit like the old days.

It'll probably never happen, but HBK should go to SD and Taker should go to RAW.
Taker hasn't been on RAW for years, so there might be some novelty there, and he could work with HHH.
HBK would be great on SD, especially if Orton is champion. Orton-HBK would be great way to help establish Orton as champion.

I mean, I don't know..It is so obvious that Smackdown is struggling at the moment, and due to some unfortunate events SD is not in good shape with Hassan being 'banned' (it was their fault though with the whole 'terrorist' angle, and it was also bad timing), Christian quitting (they should have capitalized on his crowd reactions and kept him happy), Batista and Kennedy being hurt (not their fault), Eddie passing away (RIP :().
So you would figure that they would ask Taker to be involved in each show just to add some star power. Also, I noticed, he's not even in the beginning intro to SD anymore. It's rediculous, I mean I'm as big of a Taker mark as you can get, but the guy has wrestling 2 matches in 3 months.
