I admit the Yankees made Bonderman and Rogers look good. You just feel proud because not one analyst picked the Tigers to win. Not one. Not even the hometown sports writers...
With that said though, the Yankees are so stacked it's ridiculous. I think Torre had lost it though for real when he sent Arod to 8th in the lineup. I looked at ESPNews when that happened and I was like what the fuck. In all seriousness, I feel bad for a guy like Arod. Guy hits 35 home runs has 125 RBI's and flops in the postseason. Detroit would salivate at the idea of having A-rod, even if it meant giving up some talent. We would respect him here...

I still think the Mets are gonna win the Zito sweepstakes this offseason...but its gonna be a huge deal no matter where he goes. Wouldnt be shocked at all if Zito lands a massive 7 year, $90+ million deal or something, just like with Beltran. Mets can offer as much money as any other team, including the Yanks but itll also give Zito the chance to get his numbers way up in the NL...
but no matter, no need to focus on the future right now. Wednesday cannot come soon enough

So Mark Ellis' roster replacement for the ALCS will be...
Mark Kiger?!?!
lol, this guy has 0 major league games played and hit .233 in AAA this year. He was one of the busts from the Moneyball draft, I guess Beane is still trying to prove he was right by drafting him or something. What the hell.

I'll be saying that WHEN and not IF, the Tigers are celebrating with the hardware after the (2006) World Series...
Yknow what once Boston won 2 against us in 2004 I touted them for the WS, and when Liverpool picked up a few good victories in the champions league in 2005 I tipped them for that title, both are teams I hate, and both won in rather spectacular fashion.
So naturally i'm not tipping Detroit, good day

I don't think Torre is getting fired. He's done way too much for the Yankees for 11 seasons for him to get fired because his veteran hitters didn't hit. He may have made some dumb moves (Sheffield at 1st in Game 4, A-Rod flopping all over the lineup), but they weren't detrimental really. I'd be pretty pissed if he was fired, he's been the leader of a dynasty for 11 seasons and he has one year left on his contract, let the guy finish it out.
The returns of Sheffield and Matsui may have hurt the team chemistry (moreso Sheffield). Melky Cabrera was a huge part of our success and he didn't even play outside of pinch running. Andy Phillips and Craig Wilson weren't great for us but they were solid defensively and they are actually first baseman. I'm not saying that these guys would have made a huge difference but it wasn't the same team out there in October.
We sucked. Big time.

I was just watching the sports show on CN8 (Comcast's channel). Supposedly Jeremy Bonderman got "tipped off" from someone on how to pitch at the Yankee lineup. And in the end, it paid off. Any guesses who?

How the fuck do you get 'tipped off' about pitching to hitting line-up as varied and patient as ours?
"ooh I know Derek just swung at a 2-2 fastball up and away I'll throw Melky a splitter down and away"
Infact how the fuck do you get 'tipped off' about how to pitch to any TEAM?
The Miz
10-09-2006, 10:30 PM
Ok, the A's and Tigers are both stupid in terms of their series rotation. A's are going Zito, Loaiza, Haren, Harden; Tigers are going Robertson, Verlander, Rogers, Bonderman. Bad for the A's because this means Harden will only be able to pitch one game, a game in which he will probably rusty because he hasn't pitched since the last day of the regular season.
Bad for the Tigers because if they would start Verlander, Rogers and Bonderman the first three games, they'd all be on regular rest and Rogers would get to pitch in Oakland Coliseum where he has dominated throughout his career. Robertson would get too much rest but he's the worst of their starters anyway.
They should've gone with:
1: Zito vs. Verlander
2: Loaiza vs. Rogers
3: Harden vs. Bonderman
4: Haren vs. Robertson
5: Zito vs. Verlander
6: Loaiza vs. Rogers
7: Harden vs. Bonderman
Harden vs. Bonderman should be cool though, they were once the top 2 A's prospects.

it's called watching video footage...and if there's been one "TEAM" that fills the definition it's definitely been Detroit in '06. It's also why they came back to take 3 straight after a 1-0 deficit against the Yanks.:yes::yes:
BCWWF

Wouldn't "tipped off" refer to the batter being tipped off on what pitch is coming? Not the pitched being tipped off on how the batter swings? That would be called scouting.

DominateR
10-10-2006, 09:57 PM
what definition are you talking about? and how are you so sure that the Tigers watch a lot of footage?
My definition would be that they don't have ONE great player, they all have different ways of contributing to the team, and Jim Leyland has been a great motivator this year, not to mention Dombrowski and all the coaches and trainers who I'm sure are glad they haven't put in a completely useless year (yet). They play as a cohesive unit and they support each other through the good games and the bad, and if we should happen to drop the ALCS or god forbid, the WS if they got there this year, it's ok, they'll all be a little more experienced and a little bit wiser, and I think that at this point Detroit will be the team to beat in all of baseball in 2007, as they could easily win over 100 games if they kept their current line-up and stayed healthy most of the season.
UPDATE--its 2-0 in the bottom of the 3rd right now as we discuss the definition of a team...in favor of DETROIT! W:o:o:o:o! (sorry couldn't stand the excitement)

Fox fires Lyons after insensitive comment
By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer
October 14, 2006
DETROIT (AP) -- Fox baseball broadcaster Steve Lyons has been fired for making a racially insensitive comment directed at colleague Lou Piniella's Hispanic heritage on the air during Game 3 of the American League championship series.
The network confirmed Saturday that Lyons was dismissed after Friday's game. He has been replaced for the remainder of the series by Los Angeles Angels announcer Jose Mota.
Piniella had made an analogy involving the luck of finding a wallet, then briefly used a couple of Spanish phrases during Friday's broadcast.
Lyons said that Piniella was "hablaing Espanol" -- butchering the conjugation for the word "to speak" -- and added, "I still can't find my wallet."
"I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit too close to him now," Lyons continued.
Lyons claimed he was kidding.
"If I offended anybody, I'm truly sorry," Lyons said in a phone interview. "But my comment about Lou taking my wallet was a joke and in no way racially motivated."
Lyons flew Saturday to Los Angeles, where he hoped to meet with Fox chairman David Hill. Lyons had been working in the booth for the ALCS alongside Thom Brennaman and Piniella, the No. 2 broadcast team for Fox this postseason.
"Steve Lyons has been relieved of his Fox Sports duties for making comments on air that the company found inappropriate," network spokesman Dan Bell said.
In the second inning of Friday's game between Detroit and Oakland, Piniella talked about the success light-hitting A's infielder Marco Scutaro had in the first round of the playoffs. Piniella said that slugger Frank Thomas and Eric Chavez needed to contribute, comparing Scutaro's production to finding a "wallet on Friday" and hoping it happened again the next week.
Later, Piniella said the A's needed Thomas to get "en fuego" -- hot in Spanish -- because he was currently "frio" -- or cold. After Brennaman praised Piniella for being bilingual, Lyons spoke up.
Fox executives told Lyons after the game he had been fired.
Piniella, approached before Saturday's Game 4, declined to comment on the situation except to say: "No, he's not here today."
This was not a first-time offense for Lyons, nicknamed "Psycho" during his nine-year big league career as a utilityman that ended in 1993 with the Boston Red Sox.
Hired when Fox began broadcasting baseball in 1996, Lyons was suspended without pay in late September 2004 after his remarks about Shawn Green of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Green is Jewish and elected not to play one of the two games at San Francisco that took place during the Yom Kippur holiday.
The network apologized for Lyons' remarks at the time.
Earlier in the playoffs, while working the Mets-Dodgers NLDS, Lyons unwittingly made fun of a nearly blind fan who was wearing special glasses to see the game.
"He's got a digital camera stuck to his face," Lyons said.
He also once pulled down his pants on the field during his playing days.
Lyons, 46, was a career .252 hitter with 19 home runs and 196 RBIs for Boston, the Chicago White Sox, Atlanta and Montreal. He was a first-round draft pick by the Red Sox, 19th overall, in 1981.

Surly Pujols mirrors Bonds at his worst
By Bryan Burwell
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
10/17/2006
Sports Columnist Bryan Burwell
[More columns]
As he made another hasty and all-too-predictable retreat out of the Cardinals' clubhouse early Monday night, Albert Pujols snatched a crisp white game jersey off a locker stall hook, tossed it over his broad shoulders then slipped out the back door barely uttering a word.
As he shuffled down one of Busch Stadium's well-lit back corridors, past the World Series banners and National League pennants that decorated the walls, Pujols already had tugged his dark knit cap down snugly over his head, zipped up the front of his dark sweat suit jacket and gruffly looked back over his shoulder as he prepared to walk out into the miserable, rainy St. Louis night.
The National League Championship Series' biggest star had just been presented a gift from Mother Nature when the all-day rains soaked this baseball-crazed city, forced Game 5 to be postponed for 24 hours and gave Pujols and his tender right hamstring muscle an extra day's rest.
Only Pujols didn't quite see it that way.
"Nah, I wanted to play today," he grumbled before disappearing behind a pair of swinging double doors.
It was another day and another night of watching the best player in baseball behave like the bright glare of baseball's postseason was burning a hole in the back of his neck as if he was in an interrogation room.
It was another day and another night of trying to understand why he wasn't basking in the warm glow of his own celebrity, why he couldn't quite comprehend why this should be the best of times of his baseball life, not the most unpleasant.
For some odd reason, Pujols has once again turned the NLCS into a joyless pursuit of excellence rather than an extraordinary opportunity to display his singular greatness, and I just don't get it.
He comes to the ballpark every day and treats people with a needless surly demeanor.
Instead of seizing on the chance to step onto baseball's big postseason stage and impress the nation's baseball press with his athletic brilliance, he instead has made quite the impression in the worst kind of way.
"Get out of my freakin' locker — you people are a pain in the (butt), you know that?" he snarled last week inside the crowded Shea Stadium visitors' clubhouse after Game 1 was rained out.
The greatest hitter in baseball is turning into a mirror image of the man who so gruffly held that title before him. Pujols is turning into Barry Bonds, and believe me, this is not a compliment.
This cranky postseason routine is nothing new. It's actually quite reminiscent of his surly behavior at the start of last year's NLCS in Houston, when his foul mood and uncooperative attitude seemed to affect the entire team as the Cards trudged through the early part of that series as if the games were a joyless burden rather than a carefree pleasure.
And just as things were starting to look as bad as they could get when the Astros took a three-games-to-one advantage, Pujols lightened up and showed the side of his personality that many of us in St. Louis know but rarely see anymore.
Exactly one year ago to the day, Pujols stood in the middle of the visitors' clubhouse in Houston sporting a broad smile and telling everyone that something magical was in the air.
"Can we pull off a miracle?'' Pujols asked then. "Of course we can. We just need to win one game. If we can do that, if we can just get past tomorrow, it puts all the pressure on them."
He was smiling. He was lighthearted. He was a picture of calm in the midst of a potential storm. And guess what happened the next night? Pujols crashed the most memorable home run of his career, off Brad Lidge, and the Cardinals won Game 5.
So now here we are on the first anniversary of that incredible blast, and it seems fitting that Pujols and the Cardinals should be reminded of how good it can be when he doesn't treat the hectic playoff environment with such disdain.
Just to be clear, this is not a belated diatribe against his remarks about Mets ace Tom Glavine. He's not the first nor the last great athlete I've met with a competitive fire who refuses to submit to any idea that an opponent got the better of him.
Every great athlete I've known or observed closely, from Michael Jordan to Martina Navratilova, from Tiger Woods to Chris Evert, accepted defeat in the same manner. It was never something you did to them, it was always something they did to themselves. "You didn't win. I lost."
But here's something else all the great ones have in common: The intense heat of a championship stage always feels comfortable to them.
This is not a time to be angry. This is not a time to be miserable.
This is a time to crash the walls, Albert, not a time to act like the walls are crashing in on you.

Yah, but he looked at it like 3 times in that at bat, didnt he?
I forget who was pitching ( Carpenter?), but he fell in love with that curve ball in the last couple of batters he faced. He threw it almost every time. Beltran should have been all over that ball.

He was throwing it because the batters couldn't adjust to it.
Yah, but comon. Beltran is a top tier baseball player. He and his manager and his coaches had plenty of time to realise that the curve ball was that guys bread and butter. He should have expected it. Its not like they've never seen a curve ball before. But thats how he acted.
Oh one more thing. Wheres all these A-Rod haters with there opinions on post season performances, when it comes to Mr. David Wright, who was horrible.

fastball up and in
changeup inside, fouled off
curveball low and away, strike 3
But he threw it alot before Beltran was up. If he had to get a 3rd strike on Beltran, what ball did you think he would throw? That was his hottest pitch. I just find something very wrong with someone striking out looking. I know it happens, but in that situation, i cant see how you can not take a hack at it. It just felt like that pitch was coming from a mile away.

OssMan
10-21-2006, 04:13 PM
I dunno maybe cause he threw that pitch to 3 hitters and loaded the bases? I wasn't paying attention to what was getting hit and what was hitting the strike zone but they were facing Adam Wainwright. They didn't know a lot about Adam Wainwright
Also why do people make such a huge deal about post season performances. David Wright played in an 11 game stretch and hit like .118. So that means David Wright is worthless pretty much. And I guess Carlos Delgado is the greatest player of all time because he hit .350 with like 6 homers in the same stretch

The Cardinals needed to win game 1 to have a chance, in my opinion. I honestly don't see why they wouldn't be equal to the Tigers right now, maybe even favored. Suppan is pitching great, Carpenter is one of the top in the NL, and Weaver seems to be doing well too. I am not counting them out at all right now.
I'm not a baseball expert, but why was Leyland pitching to Pujols with a man on second and 1st base empty? And why was he trying to run a pick off play on Albert, who has a sore hamstring and only averages 6 stolen bases a year?

DETROIT (AP) -- Baseball players and owners have reached a tentative agreement on a five-year labor contract, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Sunday. The deal, struck during bargaining in New York on Friday night and Saturday, is subject to the sides putting the agreement in writing, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not been finalized.

After hearing that quote on TV I posted it on here without even thinking. It'd make sense if you they asked him to wash the dirt (I don't think it was dirt tho) off. Dirt is an illegal substance on your hand if you put it there "on purpose," it is not a illegal if got there and you did not realize though (since the playing field has dirt, thus not a foriegn substance)

I guess I am skewed, being in a St. Louis market, but even so these are two pretty major cities and both pretty good teams.
I mean Detroit doesn't really have a star player, but they have a really good team overall, batting order and pitching. Some of St. Louis's stars are getting older (Edmonds, Rolen) but Pujols and Carpenter are among the best in the league.

In all honesty, this turned out to be the best World Series, based on the teams. The Mets would have been the best, but without their two best pitchers, they weren't the best team in the NL. The Tigers are the most complete team in the league, based on pitching and batting. So based on pure baseball, this is the best you could have asked for this year, in my opinion.
Jesus Shuttlesworth
10-26-2006, 07:49 PM
2003/2004/2005 playoffs where way more exciting then this years. I might feel this way since I am Red Sox fan (well for '03/'04 anyway) but even from a unbiased view I'd think I'd still feel this way, maybe not tho
Big time baseball fans are probably loving this World Series, but honestly they'd love any World Series. Not saying I'm not a baseball fan, but it definetly isn't my "#1 sport" For the average fan this Series doesn't have much draw. You'd think the Tigers would be a huge story since they where fucking awful then turned it all around but I don't know, nothing real special about it for whatever reason.
