Yankees over Detroit - 3-1, I think Detroit might pull off the first game
Twins over Oakland - 3-2, this might be harder than people think
Mets over Dodgers - 3-2, some growing pains, but pull it off
Padres over St. Louis - 3-1, the Cards are just awful

CS
Twins over Yankees - 4-3, I can't root against my team
Padres over Mets - 4-2, meh

Suppan, Weaver and Reyes are complete garbage. Well, maybe not Reyes but he has under 100 IP in the majors for his career and has been really inconsistant all season. Still, I wouldn't want any of them starting a playoff game for me. Chris Young, David Wells and Woody Williams are far superior. Carpenter > Peavy also.

BCWWF
10-02-2006, 02:44 AM
The Cardinals completely backed their way into the playoffs, couldn't even beat the goddamn Brewers. The Padres should be able to easily beat them, and right now I don't see why they aren't favorites to win the NL pennant (even though they would have finished fourth in the AL Central.

Those "goddamn Brewers" you speak of happen to be a pretty good team.

ct2k
10-02-2006, 12:59 PM
Brewers were not far off for most of the season, with a few offseason tweaks they're bound to be closer to the race next year, especially considering the state of the rest of the league.

BCWWF
10-02-2006, 02:01 PM
The Brewers are not a "pretty good team." They finished fourth in the worst division in baseball, and finished 13/16 in the national league. I don't care how good you think they are, if St. Louis needs to beat them in order to make the playoffs, and goes 2-2 against them, how are they expected to win in the playoffs? The only reason St. Louis is in the playoffs right now is because Houston didn't start its run until too late.

Difference between 2006 A's and 2000-2003 A's--Frank Thomas. He is so good it's ridiculous.

But holy shit did the Twins give them that game. Was it not mentioned in the scouting report on Zito that he walked 99 people this year? How many 2-feet high fastballs did they pop up? How many first pitches did they swing at?

BCWWF
10-03-2006, 05:53 PM
Yeah, the Twins have gotten better, but guys like Torii Hunter and SOOOO impatient, swing at first pitch etc. Tomorrow's game is just going to be funny, but I think the Twins will win the next three. Frank Thomas is the only offense on Oakland, so unless Harden/Haren whatever goes lights out like Zito did, I don't think they will have this much success.

The Twins just didn't look very comfortable today, which is why I like having Rondell White and Luis Castillo. Both veterans played well today, and I don't care what people say Rondell has been a solid player in the second half. I would kind of prefer to use Tyner instead of Nevin and then have White DH though. But Mauer clearly has some jitters right now, and for the Twins to win it will come down to Mauer-Cuddyer-Morneau-Hunter. I think that among those four they got one hit today, not positive though.

But damnit, fucking Frank Thomas. He looooves the Metrodome, he just easily cranked that shit out of the park.

BCWWF
10-03-2006, 05:58 PM
Also, I can almost see the Cardinals having a really good post season now. The kind of thing where like everything is shitty, really shitty, but then they got into the playoffs and all the pressure was kind of lifted off. They still have some great offensive weapons, if Suppan and some third starter can pitch solid and the bullpen doesn't bite them in the ass, they can do something. Just watching them today, they look like a team that is going to be good in the playoffs.

As for Milton Bradley, him, Thomas and Chavez make up the Oakland offense. He is a good player, and he has been showing why he is good in the playoffs. There clearly aren't problems with him in the clubhouse, considering how there has been absolutely nothing this year, and the A's have a club house that is well known for being down to earth and friendly.

Damn, Yankees look awful, can't get a hit for the life of them. People talk about the "greatest lineup ever seen" a lot (I did too) but its not the lineup that got us to the postseason, and you can tell they are pressing.

Looks like a totally different team than in the regular season, and looks awfully familiar to the past couple years postseason teams waiting on the long ball. The whole season the team had to actually fight with Sheff/Matsui getting injured and now it seems they don't think they have to with them back. Not saying having Sheff/Matsui back is bad but I kind of wonder how much it messes with the chemistry and fight the team had this whole year.

Yeah. I think 99% (maybe all) of the "K-Zone" replays featuring Kenny's pitches showed the amazing curveball. He showed total command of the strikezone, and our boys only allowed 2 Yankees players that got on base in their 5 hits to move up so much as one base, the rest got on base AND DID NOT MOVE AN INCH. N.Y. was 0-for-18 baserunning last night. Now I just hope the Tigers can turn in another similarly brilliant game while they still have the opportunity to win it in front of the hometown crowd.

I think its rough for the Yankees (I'm a Met fan but I'm not gonna rub it in) there really is nothing this team can do to improve. You have every position player stater under contract. Mussina's contract is up so that's an issue, but you have Johnson, Pavano, Wright and Wang under contract for 07. If you resign Mussina that's 5, or you could go get Zito, but I personally don't think Zito is the answer. Bullpen help is so hard to find, so really, what can this team do to get better.

dablackguy

Yeah, kind of dreading what is gonna happen in the offseason. Something big obviously is gonna happen and I hope its not A-Rod getting traded. Most everyone wants it to happen because he choked in the playoffs but I disagree. He did choke but so did 8 other hitters and a bunch of other pitchers. Scoring 1 run over two games or whatever can't be blamed on one person no matter what, even if he is A-Rod. It would be bullshit I think if he's traded but something will happen and that seems to be the most popular choice.

They need to shore up their pitching because they really can't do much with their hitting. Wang is the only pitcher that showed up this series, everyone else was bad. Randy Johnson is like a bag of bones out there pitching and I'm not looking forward to him pitching and his already over-5.00 ERA rising every year.

I really thought this was the Yankees year to win it again. I think Detroit and the Mets would match up well and would make for pretty good ratings. Detroit has got some cool players, or at least guys that are well known: Pudge, Magglio, Polanco, etc.

As for the argument that the A's beat the Twins and the Twins are better than the Tigers, that isn't accurate at all. The A's played a good series, but the Twins beat themselves too. The Tigers beat the best offense in baseball quite handily. Basically, the Twins played bad in the playoffs and the Tigers are playing good. Not saying that they will beat Oakland, but just saying that they aren't going to be as easy to beat as the Twins were.

I really don't give a shit about the NL playoffs. As much as I hate St. Louis, the Cards and Mets would make the best NLCS matchup. But I tried watching some of the game tonight and it just didn't interest me at all.

Honestly, before Detroit started to break down at the end of the season, I fully thought they were a legitimate contender. When they broke down I thought they might be a fluke, but I really think they have been the most complete team in the MLB this season, and they are the favorites in the playoffs right now, IMO.

I never thought they were a contender purely because of their lack of post season experience, I know that's not everything but still I thought they'd win 110 games and then bomb in the DS:-\

Tbh I don't exactly want to see A-Rod go as a 3rd baseman who hits like him is pretty hard to find but meh, we'd be stacked regardless.

Much of a legend as he may be I was against us bringing Randy Johnson over from the start and thats not changed, I'd rather see him go than Mussina but meh probably won't happen like that.

You can say Minnesota beat themselves as much as Oakland, which is true, but did the Yankees not do the same? Obviously that offense is capable of scoring more than 3 runs in 2 games against anybody, Rogers and Bonderman were good but not as good as the Yankees made them look. I think the A's have the advantage because they play so well at home and they have the pitching advantage in the first 2 games in Oakland (Zito/Robertson, Harden/Verlander). Kenny Rogers OWNS McAfee Coliseum, luckily for the A's he isn't going to pitch there.

As far as the Yankees, it's ridiculous that it's taken this long and Steinbrenner still hasn't figured out that his pitching sucks every year and he needs to stop signing hitters. New York won the WS from 98-00 thanks to Clemens, Pettitte, Cone and El Duque. The offense had a few sluggers but was mainly a collection of above-average hitters. He needs to sign Zito and trade some of his hitters for pitchers.

George will probably blame this on Torre though, obviously Lou Piniella could've taken this team to the championship.

That is seriously the greatest picture of all time

I think this one is better

Wow, looks like it all will be blamed on Torre. Reports on ESPN that he will be fired and Lou Piniella will be brought in. Stupid, stupid move

^Agreed.

New Yorkers and fans across the country are going to call for a head or two. It shouldn't be Joe Torre's

If anyone hears of any kind of online petition to have George Steinbrenner whacked let me know.

The Miz is right about our success 98-00, Cone, Wells, Pettitte, Clemens, El Duque all pitched great, we had Mendoza, Jeff Nelson and Rivera in the BP. And hitting we just had so many solid guys, no real sluggers just consistency in guys like O'Neill, Bernie, Jeter, Martinez et al, even Scott Brosius came through when it mattered.

But the thing is then I look at our line-up right now with Jeter, Cano, Cabrera, Giambi, Damon, Matsui, Posada, Abreu, A-Rod. I mean thats about as good a line-up as any team is ever going to get offense-wise and doesn't include Sheffield (if he comes back), Wilson or Bernie.

Pitching wise Mussina has been great for us since he came over from Baltimore, add in Pavano (unless he dies in a canoe accident or something), Wang, Lidle with Bruney, Farnsworth, Proctor and Rivera in the BP.

I mean that's pretty fucking solid, adding a guy like Zito would probably just cement what is otherwise a ridiculously stacked team.

Relying on average starting pitching was always gonna mean this series wouldn't be a walkover, the fact that nobody turned up offensively meant we handed it to Detroit:-\ If Steinbrenner goes on a rampage and cuts guys off left right and centre he'll just fuck things up even more, you can't win when you have a new team every year. Also getting rid of Torre would probably enrage our guys as much as it would the fans.

No way Torre is getting canned. It's not his fault nobody hit this series (besides Jeter and Posada, of course). We need pitching badly.

In agreement with what was said before, the pitching needs to be overhauled so bad its a joke.

When I heard Jared Wright was pitching the critical game 4, I was pissed because I knew it was basically an automatic loss for the yanks. That was just as bad as Kevin Brown pitching against the Red Sox in game 7 of the ALCS

They need to trade some of the mega hitters (Arod) and get some decent middle relief and add a solid third/fourth pitcher, the type who ends up throwing well in critical games in the playoffs. Guys like Johnson and Jarret are like automatic losses in the playoffs now.

To be honest, Zito on the Yankees just sounds like a disaster. He is going to command a lot of money, and he is so inconsistant. If he could pitch like he did in Game 1 all year, or like he did when he won the Cy Young, he would be a great pickup, but he has those tendencies to just be bad sometimes, and that is exactly what the Yankees do not need. I think Zito will end up somewhere random, like Baltimore, to be honest.

I am goign to go get lunch and when I come back I will try to have better pitchers for the Yankees to go after.

Zito is the best available FA, but you're right, he isn't the answer. He is very inconsistent and walks way too many batters. I don't think Zito will sign with them, but I think George will drive up the price for the Dodgers and Angels (and maybe Padres) to sign him.

If A-Rod gets traded he needs to play SS again, plain and simple.

The Miz

Trade him to Washington for Soriano, they need a SS :shifty:

well NY needs pitching. Starting and relief. And they need a center fielder.

Now the question is, who do you trade if need be?

posted 10/25 2005 pg 1 of the off season thread. Well they got one fixed.

Honestly, seemed like they did not care at all. no emotion what so ever. This was pathetic and just sad.

just terrible.

The whole not caring/no emotion bullshit showed up after the 2004 choke. They have had it ever since. Perhaps its time to let a few members of that team go.
