2 matches dont make an era of wrestling. He might have turned a few fans, who may not have been watching Wrestlemania 1 for the wrestling, but for Mr. T. And yah, that might boost the ratings, but WWF had to keep those fans hooked. Mr. T got WWF extra attention, WWF maintained it from there on. Mr. T didnt make the 80's. Nah, it wasnt just Mr. T. If they put Mr. T out there and had him wrestle Paul Orndorf. It would have been a disaster. They need Piper and Hogan. Especially Piper, who is the most responsible for the success or Wrestlemania, because of how incredible he was at being hated.

Destor, no on Rick Rude
and on a side note:
Yea, and the program and talent made the late 90s and early 2000s. But theres no denying the fact that Tyson brought a lot of attention as did Mr. T. For that, their contributions are immense. Even if only in small doses, their impact was great and lasting.
Its not even a comparison foreal . Mr. T lasted for like 2 years and that was , from what i know of, two matches. WWF didnt need Mr. T. They were prime to pull that event off reguardless. Mr. T just happend to be the big thing at that moment.
How can you even compair Tyson ( Boxing ) to Mr. T ( Wrestling ). Aside from the fact that Tyson's impact was based on him actually being that era of boxing's Tiger Woods. In that he dominated the sport. Mr. T, the actor, was a sideshow. He wasnt even a wrestler. He got his ass kicked legitly by Piper. Why are we even making this comparison? Its a really bad comparison.
Mike Tyson was watched for 1 small reason and 1 really big reason. The small reason was that, look we knew Tyson was about a 98% chance to win everyone of his fights. No one could challenge him, but some fans watched because of that 2% chance that someone would knock his ass out and it happend. Thanks Buster Douglas. The HUGE reason why everyone watched Tyson was simple. Everyone who knew boxing, knew Tyson was a fucking nut job from 1988 on. Like, you here people suger coat it when they talk on TV or the radio about Tyson, they saying stuff like " He grew up in a rough neighborhood " blah blah and this huge sob story ( excuse ) junk , over and over again, but anyone with a touch of reality knew this nut was probably going to eventually bite someones ear off in the middle of the ring. Then he raped that bitch and everyone knew for sure someones ear was coming off if this wacko got back in the ring. It wasnt a matter of how, or why, it was a matter of who and when at that point. Thats was really kept people watching. Then Tyson got his ass beat like 20 times and now you hear nothing about boxing, period.
My point is, people watch Tyson for the train wreck. They werent watching for the boxing. I know i wasnt.
Jeritron
12-01-2006, 10:54 AM
this is a cool discussion actually, we could probably make a good thread out of it. Mr. T and Mike Tysons impact on professional wrestling.
Its quite interesting now that I think of it.
Mr. Ts involvement with the initial debut of wrestlemania and the boom of Hulkamania and WWF. It fit like a hand into a glove. Mr. T exemplified the ties to Rocky and the saturday morning kids action hero with superhero like qualities. He and hogan went together like butter on toast.
On the flip side, Tysons involvement with the boom of the Attitude era
He exemplified the ties to the world of ring sports and the fighting world too, but was edgy/contreversial/volatile and violent. He and Austin were very alike.
Theres no denying their contributions.

yea, but regardless they watch him, this generates crossover interest and the WWE used it as a launching pad for both wrestling booms. They of course ran with it based on their own merit but theres no denying the importance of their respective involvements.
It doesnt take a full time career for them to have made contributions.

Before T: Very few people watched Pro Wrestling outside of the south.

There is the comparison.

It doesnt take a full time career for them to have made contributions.Definatly. They brought the people in (namely the media,) and the WWF's product kept them. Whether it be because of Piper or Steve Austin, that totally irrelevent. The people weren't there in the masses that they were after Tyson/T. They got them in, and the wrestler kept them in. Simple really.

Its all about the Game, and how you play it
Destor

You claim I wasn't talking about Tyson when I'm the one who brought him into the conversation, whats there not to get? Now it seems like you think I'm taking away credit from Piper and the like. I'm not. With out a great heel the angle wouldn't have lasted. A hero is only as good as his villian in a lot of ways. But the people were to see T get in the ring, destroying Piper was a plus, not the point.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Destor again.
Wikipedia isn't usually the most reliable thing, but I've found it to be damn good for wrestling. It says he debuted in AWA and then started his career in NWA:MA. So i guess you're right from one POV

For which pick?
Jeritron
12-05-2006, 08:12 PM
the general rule that I've gathered and have been following has been:
Limit one guess until the current host confirms or debunks them, then its a clean slate again and so forth...
I know its not an official rule but its something that myself, Destor, and others have been practicing since we started.
Otherwise you could just see "was a former intercontinental champ" and post every guy whos ever held it.
I say one guess until confirmed or denied...Dez, what you think?
P.S. - I'm stumped on this.
El Fangel
12-05-2006, 08:14 PM
Oldberg.
Destor
12-05-2006, 08:17 PM
I say one guess until confirmed or denied...Dez, what you think?Yes for the reasons that you stated. But really it's up to whom ever has the board. If it's your go and a guy post twelve answers just either state like: "no to all," or "I only counted the first one." That way at least people know what has and has not been guessed. But yeah, if I were in control I would say only one guess until you've been told if you're right or wrong.

Kidding, I dont mind Bill Goldberg, marked for him in the past.
