As in bending strings, not tying the thing in knots or anything.

Nah, as long as it sounds good, thats all that matters, its all good as far as that goes. Experiment with it.

I was just worried with physical damage. People have inundated me with things NOT to do with a bass.

You worried about damaging the strings or the hardware that holds it? I don't think unless you are bending them like a foot away from the bridge, that you can do much damage, the strings are meant to take a beating. :p

Yeah, more the bridge and nut and such.

I bend 'em all the time and in the 5 years I've played, I've only broken a handful of strings. :-\

I bend the strings a lot on my fretless and I haven't broken any strings yet. :p

You know, it's funny. In my first year of playing, I snapped two E strings. That wasn't even doing anything fancy. That was playing single notes, using my thumb. It was either a shitty bass (It was borrowed) or I was using too much force. Since then, I've not had an issue, but I'm always a bit amazed how rarely strings break on a bass, since I broke two so close together.

However, it's not the strings I'm worried about.
