You could just check out the 6 page thread that already exists about this game.

Only if you are a hardcore mortal kombat fan. All the content is awesome, but the actual gameplay pales in comparison to games like Tekken, Virtua Fighter, and DOA.

So, PS2, fighting game. What do I choose? I have Tekken 5. Wasn't too impressed with it.

Soul Caliber 3

What was unimpressive about Tekken 5?

Yeah, WTF, JJ? Tekken 5 is as solid as 3D fighters come. Soul Calibur 3 is just as excellent, but in a different way. Tekken is more about picking your spots, SC3 will let you rush in like a mad man to an extent (try it against a half-decent opponent, and he'll shut you down with a parry or a counter like gangbusters).

MK:A is decent, but not nearly as deep. Like Figgy put it, it's all about the massive kontent.

It's coming out for the Wii in a couple of months. The motion controls look pretty damn sweet. You can also just use a Gamecube or classic controller. I might rent it.

Tekken 5 is great initially, and I think that its replayability lies in its unlocks and customisation purchases. The thing is though, money seems so hard to come by, completion of story mode gets you 100,000 and a new char. but the last boss is so frustrating I nearly tore my hair out trying to defeat him.

Arcade mode gets money, but you can't earn anymore than $2000 per fight and all the worthwhile purchases are like $500,000

Devil Jin mini game thing gets 1,000,000 but it's way too hard and very bland.

Also, I never understand why blocking in tekken is so weird, in mortal kombat it was great.

Blocking in Tekken is weird? The vast number of fighting games in existence block by moving backward. If anything, MK is the exception to the rule.

Also, Tekken 5's replayability mainly lies in playing with a friend, or inviting several people over and having a tournament.

Yes.

Doing 8 vs 8 team battle, and beating all your opponents(who thinks he's the shit) guys with just your first guy is awesome.

Indeed. You do have at least 1 friend with 2 hands and a pair of eyes, right, JJ?

None of my friends care about fighting games :n:

I must play on my own :'(

One day, we will have a massive TPWW get together and we will fight it out.

Yeah, I got a fairly large amount of friends, but barely any of them come round my place, let alone play video games in my house. The only friends that like fighting games just button bash like spazmo's.

Multiplayer in fighting games means little to me, I could go with out it, put it that way.

I see. For button mashers, go ahead and get Soul Calibur 2 or 3. They should be able to do fairly well, untill you get parrying and 8 way moving down.

Also, it also has Yoshimitsu (you know, from Tekken) with a better control scheme.

Yeah, I don't really encourage button mashers. I've choreographed my own tekken fights, but no one I know is really up to playing it out. It'd make a killer video though. Really stylish, like using the Marshall-Law-frog-jump-backwards-kip-up-thing to avoid a sweep.
