View Full Version : Poor Poor Punk...

From Prowrestling.com
According to several sources in contact with Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, CM Punk has earned himself even more heat backstage.
After learning that he was booked to lose on a house show card two weeks ago, Punk reportedly asked one of the road agents if the reports of him being in WWE's doghouse were true. The agent denied the idea that there was heat on Punk. However, the road agent did an about-face by telling his colleagues about the conversation he had with Punk, giving them the idea that Punk was complaining about doing the job. He now has more heat than ever.
If he did jobs and didn't react like Carlito, Rob Van Dam and Shelton Benjamin, the story would be that he doesn't care or he doesn't have any passion for wrestling. So well, Punk is currently in a tough spot to say the least.
Basically he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Wow, what an asshole(the road agent). LOL. I doubt they'll do anything. It's not like jobbing at a house show hurt his credibility and I doubt they'll hurt his push on TV anyway.

It's a damn shame the WWE are being so bitter towards the guy. He's pretty much one of only a few people on the WWE roster with potential star quality about them. Guys like CM Punk are closer to booming the company than a John Cena or Bobby Lashley.
Mick Foley said in a recent interview that the WWE has dropped the ball with Punk, and I agree with him wholeheartedly.

The three hit combo Punk does came from KENTA, same with Go 2 Sleep.
The chlostline/bulldog combo came from Matt Hardy, who I think got it from Raven.
Chris Jericho was doing the double underhook backbreaker before Punk did Welcome To Chicago.
I'll give props where they are earned, and no wrestler that I've seen has earned as much, and lost as much in my book as CM Punk. He's great, full of potential, love his promos, taking his life style and turning it into his persona is awesome makes him look real.
For every bad thing I have to say about Punk, I have a good thing to say.
The dude is full of potential, I cannot stress that enough. The dude is also getting mildy screwed over. WWE is dropping the ball on him and in my eyes WWE is somehow has the logic to blame Punk.
Punk just needs to do one thing to make me cheer for him again, and I'll be marking out like there's no tomorrow. Until then, I don't care.

On a more serious note, at No Way Out it actually pained me when Michael Cole claimed Eddie Guerrero invented the Frog Splash.
I think I saw "suplex" and "grave" in a the context of "move innovation", and immediately though of the liberties the WWE has taken with the life and death of Eddie Guerrero.

The striking combination is what? A few blows? It's not like CM Punk took his screenplay and adapted it without permission.
The Go 2 Sleep is a fireman's carry into a roundhouse kick isn't it? That must have taken years to come up with.
Did Jericho invent the butterfly backbreaker? I'm sure it must have existed before him. I'm sure I've seen Roderick Strong do it, too. After all, he is "Messiah of the Backbreaker".
The clothesline and bulldog would be classified as separate moves, and yes, Hardy and Raven have both done them in that order, but the clothesline and bulldog predates both men.
Besides, one of Punk's greatest feuds was with Raven, and he played his follower in TNA. He probably knows the guy really well, so him using it is probably a shout-out to the guy.
If moves being stolen somehow was an issue (and it isn't, but anywho), Punk at least does it in a tone that pays homage, or that seems inspired by those wrestlers. There's nothing wrong with emulating a wrestler's style, or using moves which you yourself didn't invent.
I appreciate you trying to use reason, and I understand that it's a personal reason you don't want to get behind him, but I think it is a bit unreasonable to really take points off a guy before he didn't invent the move. Kurt Angle didn't invent the Ankle Lock, does that make his career mean nothing?

I really don't think that Punk is in the dog house, he's jobbed, what, 3 times on TV? That's it!
He's in the MITB match, he gets TV time every week.
Plus from the sound of it, IF this story is true and it's mis communication, it managed to make it's way to the internet, so chances are the WWE higher ups read it as well, or at least know about it.
If being in CM Punks spot right now is being in the dog house, I think plenty of mid carders would like to be there as well

Upon reading this thread and seeing a lot of the comments, I'm still wondering about this 'genuine star quality' that he has comes from. Still waiting to see it.
Nothing Punk has done has made me go 'shiiiit, he is going places'.
There is obviously a reason he's not on top. I can't believe its down to the age old excuse of being held down. I don't think that excuse washes in this day and age. He comes across an arrogant prick on his website and probably does backstage.

The guy is probably one of those "emo" fucks who thinks being themself and being "honest" isn't worth compromising for success. He probably doesn't fuck Finlay in the showers, so he's not well liked by the veterans. They're also probably jealous he's got more of a following than they likely ever will, and he fucks Maria.
To see his star quality, watch Survivor Series '06. I do not know how anyone cannot watch that and not sense some kind of upwards momentum bigger than anyone else in that match. When Triple H and Shawn Michaels are a part of that match, it should scream "star".
He's one of the few ring psychologists left out there, very similar to a Raven-like competitor. He's one of the best talkers in the business, today. He's never really cut a real stand-out promo in the WWE. This is their loss, as when the guy takes the stick is when he really oozes charisma. That carries into his matches.
CM Punk and Mr. Kennedy are two men who I am sure go together like an Austin/Rock duo. In a few years, if not within the next year, these two men will be on top of the wrestling world, one way or another.

Fair dos, I should have said with the exception of SS. But wasn't that his home town or something?
Problem is, he won't get anywhere if he's a prick backstage. He seems to be getting a lot of heat for it, and I can't believe its all down to him fucking Maria. As for the following, KHALI has a big IWC following. Means shit really.
I think Kennedy is more talented than Punk and is certainly more over than he is. I think we'll be able to judge a lot from their relevant entrances at Mania. If Punk gets silence coming down, which I would hazard a guess he will then I think it could be a death knell for him.
I haven't been impressed with him to be honest, perhaps thats because I haven't seen much of his previous work, I dunno. I just think this 'straight edge' thing isn't going to get him anywhere in the big leagues. I suppose its better than being deaf, as per their original plan.

A week or so back, we had Punk/Richards. Stevie whipped the shit outta that kid, Punk did the off-the-shoulder knee lift that doesn't look all that impactful, and he gets the win.
I was rooting for Stevie. Not because I thought he'd win or because I'm a Stevie fan, but because he was the one in the ring that was actually there for a match. On top of that, SR has real charisma; he doesn't have to talk up a storm for you to get behind him.
This is not, however, Let's Blow Richards night. My point, is that Punk is rather lacking in this "it factor" some people suggest he posesses. Wether he intends it or not, he has an air of pompocity about him -- posibly mistaken for this phantom charisma by his loyals -- and he carries the scraggly, cracked-out appearance of a hobo. Just to add some insight to this, when you're on the road it is a pain in the ass to sleep. Your internal clock just gets fucked. Most guys who travel take sleeping just so they can get some rest on make it to the next town on time.

Oh, for fuck's sake #1: I am sick to god damn death of the "Bigger Pop Than DX" garbage. The guy got cheered by his home god damn crowd. Has anyone thought, perhaps, that there might have been a sense of "We knew this guy before he was big, and now he's on a DX level" type of sentiment there? Maybe there was more than "Punk is better than DX" going on?
Oh, for fuck's sake #2: Could we please stop with the bitching about his moves? You show me any wrestler who invented his entire moveset, and I'll show you a fucking liar. But until then, let's stop fucking a dead horse and move on with issues that actually exist.
Now that we've dealt with the two things that won't take us any further into the conversation, I'd like to point out that Punk is not a very attractive guy at all, another reason ppl resent him banging Maria. The only "attractive, professional actor" he resembles is Hal Sparks, if Hal Sparks lost his muscle tone and spent last night in a boxcar.
Finally, I reiterate, he has done nothing in his WWE career to call for the Internet Sympathy. And, if you're going to try to bring up the SS pop again, I'll make it crystal clear: HE DIDN'T POP FOR HIMSELF. The crowd did that, not him. He just stood there...and they cheered. HE didn't DO that moment. Ere go, HE has done NOTHING impressive.
No, I've never seen an ROH match -- and that's my fucking point: There's a lot of fuss about a guy who hasn't shown me anything to fuss about.

He's alright. I enjoyed his RoH stuff. I didn't shit my pants over it but I enjoyed it. He's been kinda meh in WWE so far. And I think it's ridiculous to blame the head guys in WWE for all of that.
As far as the stolen moves, who cares? I've read someone here argue that people defending Punk for "stealing" moves would be all over someone like Hardcore Holly if he did it. And I think that's true for some of the people defending him. But as for others, such as myself, I just don't see the big deal.
Honestly, if Punk wants to make it big in WWE, he's going to have to adjust to the WWE style of pro-wrestling. It's that simple. What worked for him in RoH isn't necessarily going to work for him in WWE. It's a much wider, less "smart", more casual audience. And I hope nobody expects WWE Punk to be like RoH Punk, those companies are completely different in their approach to professional wrestling. But, if he jobs out of the E, then he can go back to RoH where he can really be "appreciated".

He really hasn't done anything of note in ECW, but he hasn't been given the time to have any great matches, and has been given very little mic time, if at all. For this I am not really a fan of him. I have no problem with him, and I enjoy him when he's on ECW, but he's nothing to write home about. However, with that being said I definetely want to see some of his Ring of Honor work to see what the fuss is about, and see if I agree with it, and end up becoming a big fan of him.

Maybe there was more than "Punk is better than DX" going on?
Survivor Series was in Philly. Punk is from Chicago. Philly doesn't equal Chicago

Punk is talented. Punk has a bright future. If Punk is in the doghouse, I guess the other ECW guys who Punk goes over nearly every week are in the shithouse.
While I have heard nothing of him being a total dick, it's certainly not beyond the relm of possibility that a guy who's getting good crowd reaction in his freshman year in a national company might have a bit of an ego. I will never understand why so many people are so willing to stand up for a person's true life character just based on fandom. I at least admit HBK is an asshole, HHH is a glass ceiling onto himself, Flair is a psycho ego maniac, JBL is a dick, Hall is a drunk, Nash is lazy, Gunn can't work a 2 minute match without getting winded, and Waltman has the charisma of a lightbulb.
Also, Punk steals moves, but so does everyone else. Punk isn't a god, he isn't the end all be all, he is a young up and comer who may or may not have a bit of an attitude problem. End of story.

I said it once, I'll say it again: Punk being overrated is overrated.
Oh yeah? Well... "Punk is overrated" being overrated, is in itself overrated.

Punk is still miles away from how overrated Hart is.

Um, Punk is from Chicago. The sentiment has nothing to do with it. Punk got a bigger pop than DX. He got a bigger pop than the two biggest faces in the business. For one shining moment Punk was the most over guy in the company. That's when his push started to go downhill. Hmm, I wonder why?
Agree with you about the moves.
Punk is attractive. Women I know go gah-gah over him. He doesn't look like a hobo at all. What kind of hobos can afford hair dye? You may not like it, but the whole style Punk embodies works for him, and gets all the girls who love emo figureheads in love with him.
LMAO at your point about him not popping for himself. You act as if the pop was random and Punk must not have appealed to them at all. They popped him because they liked him. That in itself is a marketable quality. Next you're going to argue that Austin and The Rock being over had little to do with their success within the WWE.
So what you're saying is that you haven't seen what the rave about the guy is from two-minute matches in ECW, so he must be overrated. Has anything in ECW been good since it's recent inception? Rob Van Dam's been a part of some good matches, but he gets like five times the duration to pull them off, sometimes more.
Punk is a young guy with all the tools to be something. He can wrestle, he can talk, he's over, he's got charisma, he's got the fan following. Why can't people accept that even if he does come off as a bit of a jerk backstage, most people in the business are jerks? The Undertaker doesn't like someone, so he goes bitching to Vince about them so they look like a fool on TV. JBL fucking rapes people. Ric Flair assaults people for cutting him off. Punk may not have shown uneducated you why he's got a following, but he's got one for a reason (the fact he has one should be stand-alone proof of that).
I thought Punk was initially pushed too fast to the main event after Survivor Series, but I would have kept him looking strong. I wouldn't have jobbed him out to Hardcore Holly because "Holly's a bigger star". That's just bullshit, and everyone knows it's bullshit. Punk is seen as Heyman's boy, with youth, potential and a hot Diva girlfriend. The guy could cure cancer and the WWE would say something like "Well, Bob Holly's had surgery so many times he's given a lot of finances over to the medical field. I think he's the bigger contributor to science..."
I'm not so much angry about the guy's position on the roster (he is where he should be), but rather how much bitterness there is against him by guys like Finlay, who are great wrestlers, but never really set the world on fire. Punk comes in, they don't like it that this new age pussy is over, so they try and beat it out of him. It's why the wrestling industry is still a carny business.

That and Vince McMahon's idea of "humour", The Boogeyman and The Undertaker wearing a leotard and pretending to be a zombie.

So many points to make... *sigh*
1. First, I figured at least 5 people would make a "hometown" comment; alas, only 2 brought it up. Read my post: I never said he was from Philly. I said it was a home crowd, as in a place full of people who are especially in tune with him. A varitable RoH kinda place, as Destor pointed out earlier.
2. Good.
3. Just because chicks like the "I used a lazy rat for a pillow" look doesn't mean he's attractive. Besides, his appeal, in that category, most likely comes from being young, famous, in the money, and not Randy Orton.
4. I did not say the pop was random. You need to read, Aussie. What I said, was that he did nothing to instigate it. The pop has nothing to do with whatever accomplishments he may have achieved, as he didn't do it. If you want to discuss Great Moments in WWE Crowd Participation, then sure, the SS Punk Pop (which sounds like a gay cruise ship) fits right in. But since he didn't do anything, it doesn't count as something he did.
5. I also never said the kid was overrated. Not in a general sense. All I was trying to get across, was that he has yet to impress me, as an individual fan, either way, and that there's really no call for the consistant griping from the internet about the justice in his treatment by the company.
6. Undertaker, JBL and Flair have been there more than twenty minutes, too. On top of that, JBL has never impressed me, I detest Flair with an unstoppable passion, and I've heard more stories about Taker helping the new guys as opposed to snubbing them. Authority is something earned, not assumed; just ask Headless Marie. And again, nobody's disputing the guy has fans. It just seems, as uneducated as I may be, a little more important to focus on building a healthy repoire with your co-workers. I would think any performer would want a reputation that keeps you as desirable to work with as you are desirable to watch.
7. They've had a thouisand chances to make a star out of Holly. They have opted otherwise. Any schmuck can tell you, the man's career is weak, at best, and having him anywhere near a World Title is a fucking joke. It just goes back to him being there for 14 years. He has the seniority and, wether we like him or not, a definite amount of authority about him. You think if Punk tried to pull the same crap Bob does backstage that he'd still have a job? Of course not. Vince and his crew are big on nepotism, and they run their gig like a frathouse. The simple fact is, seniority rules; everyone else gets a black eye. Especially the French.
Like I said,k I don't dislike Punk as a person -- I don't even know the guy. But there is seriously nothing there to go fuckin' bananas over.
