Gamingring.com Recently had the chance to sitdown with THQ WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2008 product development staff members Bryan Williams and Dan Ryan. In this exclusive interview we asked about all 3 console versions of the game. You can expect more coverage of what promises to be the best WWE wrestling game ever released. Keep a look out daily for more videos, screens and interviews. Were just getting started.

Nintendo WII

Q: Will there be an option to play the game using the Gamecube controller instead of the WII Wand and nunchuck controls?

A: Dan Ryan - Our main goal when creating the Wii version of the game was to offer players a completely different experience than on the other skus. In achieving this, we tailored the gameplay so that it fully utilized the Wii's unique controls, so much so that we didn't see any reason to make the game playable via the GameCube controller. Once players get in the ring with the Wii Remote for the first time, playing the game on a standard game pad will be the last thing on their minds.

Q: Besides what was show can you give us some other examples of the WII Wand and Nunchuck controls for the game?

A: Dan Ryan - Since E3, we've been implementing many of the Environmental Grapple-type moves that were such a hit in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007. For example, some Superstars can Irish Whip their opponents into the corner by waving the Nunchuk, then hold the B button while waving the Wii Remote to set their opponents up for some Ric Flair-style chops to the chest. Players can then repeatedly wave the Wii Remote in a backhand motion, right along with their Superstars onscreen, as they brutally slap their hands against the chests of their opponents.

Q: Is there any use of the Sony sixaxxis tilt controls in this years game?

A: Bryan Williams - This is arguably the most frequently asked question, and for obvious reasons. While I would love to put an end to all of the speculation and Internet rumors right here and now, I can't. As much as it pains me, the fans are going to have to wait just a little bit longer before a statement is released regarding any possible Sixaxxis tilt functionality.

Q: Will this years online play be as full featured as the Xbox 360 version?

A: Bryan Williams - Information regarding our online feature set, for both the PS3 and 360, will be forthcoming.

Xbox 360

Q: In the trailer in its closing moments there was a scene of the Sandman lighting a flaming table. Is that a cut scene or is that a player intiated move. And if so how would the player perform the move?

A: Bryan Williams - The ability to light tables on fire is in fact a player initiated move, and it's not just tables that you can light on fire either! Superstars will also be able to ignite barbed wire 2x4's in a swell of fire as well. Lighting one of these objects on fire is as simple as having a maxed out momentum meter. When your Superstar's momentum meter is maxed out, simply stand next to a set table and press the finisher button to set the table ablaze. Igniting the barbed wire 2x4 is performed the same way. While holding a barbed wire 2x4 with a maxed out momentum meter, press the finisher button to turn an already dangerous weapon into a flaming, dangerous weapon!

Q: What are the differences between the Xbox 360 version and the PS3 version?

A: Bryan Wiliams - While there may or may not be differences between each console, fans should feel rest assured that whether you own a 360 or PS3, you'll experience all of the fantastic gameplay that WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 has to offer.

Q: I realize that your not yet ready to reveal the full roster but can you give us a rough percentage of NEW superstars vs Returning superstars and legends?

A: Bryan Williams – We’ll be making more announcements about our roster soon, so stay tuned!

Q: If you had all three systems and had to make a choice of picking one version of the game which one would you pick?

A: Bryan Williams - I couldn't pick! That's like asking me to choose favorites between my own children. In all honesty, it's the game, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2008, that is the star of the show. The console is simply the tool in which to play it on.

Q: Computer AI has long been a difficult road to master with the series. Will this years addition of the different fighting styles finally allow the computer controlled characters to play like their real life counterparts?

A: Bryan Williams - That's the plan. From the outset of pre-production, AI improvements were pegged as one of the highest priorities for this year's game. AI is always tricky but I feel that the current state of our AI is miles ahead of where we were last year when we shipped.

No questions about Custom Soundtracks... The only real knowledge we got was the nice little fire system they got (for Hardcore Style I assume). Making the Wii version play strictly with the wand and nunchuck is a mistake. I understand the logic but the better Wii games offer options of control including Classic Controler and GCN Controller. It wouldn't kill them.

I went with 54 because there were meant to be “over 50 superstars”. I figure they were shooting for 55 but had to take Chris Benoit out and didn’t have time to replace him.

Cor Von, Sabu, and RVD were all questionable but I figure they would be kept in the game, if only to beef up ECW’s “major impact”.

I originally thought DnD would have no chance but apparently they debuted way back in January (pretty sure the cutoff is the week after WM) plus they are SD’s only team. My “WTF” pick for the year is Cherry...who gets in if only so they can have a trio entrance with DnD. I can certainly live without her being in as well as all the divas and Hardcore Holly, but ah well.

Cryme Tyme were also sort of a stretch. I think TWGTT would have a better chance if only because of Shelton Benjamin…but I figure if Cryme Tyme gets in you’ll have 2 face teams and 2 heel teams.

I’d certainly be happy with this roster. Out of this bunch I think the biggest current-roster snub is William Regal…but back in April he wasn’t doing much. He’d probably be in the first pack of downloadable characters along with John Morrison (separate character from Johnny Nitro), Santino Marella, Eugene, and Big Titty V.</font>

Cor Von will more than likely be in the game, I mean he's had an important role in ECW this year and has only missed the last month because of family problems.

RVD is a toss up, but Sabu is more than likely not in.

<font color=goldenrod>Yeah RVD and Sabu were tough calls. I mean they were both still around well past the deadline. If the Benoit thing hadn't happened I think they'd just be left in...but since they got rid of him they might just get rid of RVD and Sabu too.

I will say though, if my roster ended up being true...and the rumored 10-man extreme rules match really existed, my first match would totally be: 10-Man Extreme Rules: Sandman, Dreamer, Sabu, RVD, Balls, Punk, Thorn, Striker, Cor Von, Burke :drool:

Also...I must admit I wouldn't mind Santino making it. He might have an outside chance, I mean Umaga and Khali got in appearing the week after WM..he appeared 2 weeks after. I'd like him to be in just for his theme</font> :cool:

But apparently it was confirmed that Stephanie McMahon is somehow involved in the game, which is odd. Also apparently WWE requested THQ to not include a certain wrestler in the game because he was about to be fired...can only assume that man is Sabu :(

Q: With the recent release of Madden 2008 and its framerate problems that plaqued the PS3 version of the game will the ps3 version of Smackdown vs Raw 2008 suffer from that same issue?

A: The PS3 version of SmackDown vs. Raw 2008 runs very smoothly. We are not anticipating any problems.

Q:There has been some rumors going around that this years game will feature 10 wrestlers on the screen at the same time. Can you please clarify if thats true or not? Thank you.

A:These rumors are not true.

The Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 video game may miss its November deadline as Vince McMahon is going back and forth about whether to leave Chris Benoit in the game. The designers haven't completely removed Benoit from the game yet and Vince wants him out obviously. However, if they remove him, it would require the game to be delayed and they'd miss out on the 2007 holiday season revenue, which is always the most lucrative quarter for video games.


So, does Vinny Mac want Money or to keep Benoit out?

Technically: announcers, refs, and non-playables all count as "characters", but I'm assuming he meant 70 playable characters.

My roster prediction from earlier might be true, except they found someone to replace Benoit (which I seriously doubt could possibly delay the game that much). If I had to take a stab I'd say they threw Santino Marella in...which would be good news as I want his theme</font> :cool:

I highly doubt its true, but seemingly everywhere I look the same roster keeps getting posted.

Doubt its true though...as there are 60 current superstars (which seems like a lot but not unreasonable). I usually set my options (Harder difficulty, quicker spirit fill, no run-ins) start an exibition match with the guys (we tend to host multiplayer parties for big releases) and beat each other up. Afterwards I wake up the next morning and mess around with the singleplayer features (profile management, toy with the Create-A's) and probably kick off the season mode.

Be interesting if the editing feature is actually worth a fuck, i think raw 2 on the xbox offered the biggest level of control over editing superstars (been so long since i played any of the n64 games i may be wrong).

Then again raw 2 was a pile of shit that was just rush released so that kind of thing was probably accidental and something they forgot to lock down.


Still no word on mp3's as entrance themes though =/ Its something they could have patched into 2k7 but never bothered so it'll most likely be a checkbox feature on this version.

Ya know? You beat your opponent, but the cutscene shows you getting screwed out of your match.

1) Sabu in but RVD out! ECW originals storyline to unlock RVD?
2) JTG & Shad in but Deuce, Domino, Robbie, Rory Cade, Murdoch, London & Kendrick missing - Tag Team storylines to get them?
3) Cor Von & Burke & Punk but no Kevin Thorn or Matt Striker - New Breed Story line to unlock them
4) Helms, Chavo & Mysterio are the only cruiserweights (leaving out Super Crazy, Noble, Yang, Moore, London and Kendrick - as mentioned before) possible storyline to unlock a couple of those?
5) Only 7 Divas - it was previously rumored that someone had said there was 8 - Unlockable
6) Only 7 Legends - There should be more than that possible unlockable Alumni like Big Show, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero etc.

Just an idea that I think THQ & Yukes might of thought of and gone with! I mean it was in on SD 2 & 3 (KYR & JBI) so they obviously have the ability to put it in, and I've seen people sayign about how they enjoyed it in those games too. So what's to stop THQ/Yukes going oh they liked it lets do it again and not tell them who they could unlock!

What strikes me the most is that, at least in the PS3 and 360 versions, weren't they supposed to be working with a form of media that has a higher capacity (HD DVD and Blu Ray)? I mean, we know VO and shit took up alot of space on the regular DVDs, and that may have been a valid excuse, but now you have the new technology and would be able to fit a LOT more on those, plus the possibility to be able to install the game onto a HDD in the system (provided THQ even considered that)? Yet, we only have the 50 that disappoints to fucking hell. No excuse this time, I think. THQ needs to promise something special about some kind of downloadable content, or else this is going to be it's worst selling WWE game in a LONG time.

And I don't think this is a space issue this time.

BOOYAKKA BOOYAKKA SIX ONE NINE! Rey pops out of the floor with a bang. Very little has changed since last years entrance, the main change is his attire, in which he is sporting a goofy looking studded helmet. It seems the character model was taken before he got his masive beer gut.

Video 2 - Gameplay

Its Rey vs Tommy Dreamer (:heart: ) Straight away Rey trips Dreamer onto the middle rope and executes the 619/West Coast Pop, which hasn't been reannimated. Rey pins Dreamer and celebrates. Did you know that Batista used to compete as a bodybuilder and weighed over 350 pounds. He took up wrestling after meeting Road Warrior Animal and Mr Perfect at a competition in Minneapolis. At least the loading screens are more exciting this year. Rey Celebrates by going on the turnbuckles and thanking Eddie.

One other thing. I was just going through the warez releases of the PS2 Smackdown Vs. Raw games and both of them have been on a DVD-5 (4.7gb). The PS2 could use DVD-9 (8.5gb) discs so if they wanted more content, they've still got another 3.8gb to play with anyways.

I don't think that. HOWEVER, I doubt that there will be the finishers of wrestlers planned to be DLC in CAW mode. If Kendrick isn't in the game initially, don't expect to see Sliced Bread #2 or even the Dudley Dog to give people a reason to buy the new wrestlers.

It doesnt matter how good this game looks it will never surpass No Mercy for N64.On top of that Fire Pro Returns is being released in the US for the PS2 and any self respecting gamer knows that gameplay and infinite customization beats graphics and songs cutting of to early during the entrance if its to long.God I hate that so much.

Wow...I was always under the impression that the 360 games were HDDVD (even if numerous people proved otherwise)! Maybe because of the PS3 being Blu Ray, may've only made sense for the 360 to use the competing higher capacity format.

360 is Dual Layer DVD9. Where as PS2 was only single layer DVD5 I believe.
