View Full Version : OBSERVATION: Political PPV theme song might be some trouble for JBL

Last time I read, Vince was a VERY hard-nosed conservative (one of the reasons why JBL was able to stay even after the goose step incident: Vince agreed with alot if not all of JBL's political views).
However, while I may be reading too much into this, and however minute or how much most of us may not give a shit, I enjoyed one PPV theme in particular, the one for Royal Rumble 2007, Rise Against's "Drones" (it's currently on my iPod).
Since my iPod can display lyrics of songs (provided you put them into the song's ID tag), I went and got the lyrics for the song Drones, when I noticed something very weird: The song was MEANT as a memorial to 9/11. Looking at it more, it would seem as though the lyrics (found at http://artists.letssingit.com/rise-against-lyrics-drones-svthzg4) actually talk about how "important people" have forgotten about the victims. But investigating further, on their site http://www.riseagainst.com, and on many related YouTube user made videos for the songs, it's painfully clear that this band is anti-war, and DAMN sure anti-Bush. Basically meaning, for the first time in a LONG time, if ever, the WWE has picked a song deplicting a obviously liberal POV.
This might sound like it belongs to the discussion forum, but there might be wrestling aspects involved here. Remember the thing that JBL and Vince have the same viewpoints? What if Vince's viewpoint has changed since then, and what if the choosing of this song (c'mon, how many songs that came out then could've fit the Rumble 07 bill just as well) is saying such? Could it be that this means the status of JBL may not be so nailed down now that JBL has one less thing in common with Vince (remember the reason why he survived the goose step incident), and that he may want to be more careful now.
Just something I thought maybe needed some extra thought here. Mick Foley has been an outspoken Dem on WWE TV without incident, but he never used that (to my vantage point) to get what he wanted. JBL may have used HIS political views as a main reason why he should've been WWE champ for 11 straight months.
Or maybe I'm reading too much into this.

I think you probably are.

Maybe. I'm not sure...just weird that of all the songs that were out there....that would be like Michael Savage saying that he has been listening to the Dixie Chicks non-stop since Not Ready To Make Nice came out. It wouldn't go together too well.

You are. Yeah, Vince is a conservative, but he's about making money above all else. He's not the type to care about a song's political statements; is it a good, popular song, and will it attract the attention of his target audience; that is what he's concerned about.

Maybe he doesn't know what the song was about and he was all like "Well this sounds like a good song to plug our PPV on."

Seriously, I doubt they ever really listen to the songs anyways.

Maybe if we convince the Republican party to allow Vince to run as a candidate or at least be a prominent supporter then we could kill them off for good.

I'd vote for Vince
just to see the trainwreck if he won

Most fans don't even pick up on the lyrical content of their artist's songs. I doubt corporate paid any more attention to the song than most of the fans.
Just remember, "Born in the USA," "Won't Get Fooled Again," and "Rockin' in the Free World" are all Patriotic songs. Except, you know, if you listened to them. Rise Against are pop culture, and nobody listens to the content of pop songs.
However, I'll say this: Vince appeals to the "Patriotism" of his base fan. These days, America doesn't want to be in a war or support Bush. It would make sense that someone who wants to Market to America might distance himself from what even a lot of conservatives are calling a clusterfuck.
Hoiwever, I don't think they went that far. At best, they probably went "it's about 9-11...SUPPORTOURTROOPSVACANTSTAREDROOOOOOOOL..." And more likely, Rise Against is like every other pop act they've dealt with--A way to cross promote, what the fuck else matters?

Conservatives are gay

Conservatives are not gay. Conservatives only have heterosexual intercourse with their spouses.
Except when they're having affairs, fucking altar boys and the usual "family values" stuff.

Um Catholics priest fuck alter boys, and for the most part Catholics are liberal, so yeah...
Also, some conservatives/Republicans are gay, they are called log cabin republicans.
Another thing, for the most part conservatives are anti-gay rights, so that doesn't make since.
Finally, it is a fucking song. Most music, except country music, is rather liberal.
I know I already said finally, but finally yet again, how old is Vince? Like in his 60? People that old usually don't switch politcal parties on a whim, especially when they are so rooted to one. Vince isn't going to be a dem any time soon, JBL is safe.

Also, lets say for shits and giggles that Vince did switch parties or whatever, is he really going to fire JBL for having differing political view points? That is just silly.

Vince isn't a Dem. I promise you, don't ask why I know his political leanings on an up to the minute basis, but I do ok? Just don't ask about it! DUDE, I know what you're going to ask next, and just don't. I know, that's all I'm going into it.
Oh and if we could get a couple year long JBL WWE Title run to coinside with a multi year Tovo & Jacko Tag Title run, that would be sweet.

Possibly illegal.

There is that, but also look how many people Vince likes and hasn't fired that are democrats, like Mick Foley.

Not necessarly fire, but he wouldn't have that way to go about getting away with as much of the things that reports say he does backstage, or getting the types of free passes he usually does

He's still the company boy. Why would that change based on political preference? Is Vince that petty?
...Okay, bad example.

Naw. Destor claimed that wrestlers never take time off.
The one claimed that he got AIDS for fun.
Claiming Catholics as liberal, which is just the usual religious frothing is nothing compared to that.

So then we are agreement that there have been lots of notable liberal catholics?

No, just that you're less full of shit than Destor and the One, usually.
(Though "lots of" is a different question, since there are "lots of" notable conservative catholics, too. All it really proves is that the party isn't unilateral, an empty argument on either side).

Yeah, I don't Vince cares about that sort of thing or even listens to the songs on his broadcasts. I mean, have you heard the Raw theme?

There's somewhat of a difference, though. Some people were saying that the To Be Loved theme is VERY popular with the live crowds. It's a singalong when it starts, as nearly the ENTIRE CROWD sings with the theme. I've seen a few videos of this on YouTube. It's quite the trip.

The same's true of almost any pop culture theme, though.
You could have substituted it with another, less gay theme.
