Former WCW & TNA star Konnan made an appearance on Wrestling Observer Live with Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on Sunday night (July 8) discussing his departure from TNA Wrestling and speaking out in the media regarding the Chris Benoit situation. Here are some highlights:

- On leaving TNA, Konnan said it was a combination of five years of lies building up and not getting paid enough money.

- He added that not being helped with his health issues also caused him to make his decision. Konnan said he came into TNA with a hip problem and the excuse he got from TNA was that he already had a bad hip. Konnan told them it got worse working for them.

- Konnan said when it was time for him to get the hip replacement surgery, TNA did loan him the money, but wanted it all paid back in full. He said they also offered to loan him money for his kidney transplant as well, but again wanted to be paid back in full.

- He said that TNA always disrespected and briefly mentioned some racial tension.

- Konnan said he could never understand why when he would go to TNA and would ask for more money why that would tell him they couldn't, but were re-signing Christian Cage and giving Kurt Angle and Sting huge contracts.

- He said since he had somewhere else to go (AAA), he just left.

- Konnan said he told Homicide and Hernandez not to leave TNA because he was. He gave them his reasons for leaving having been there since day one and now being broke. "I decided to quit. Enough was enough," said Konnan.

- He added that Dixie Carter has her head in the sand and is oblivious to the problems with TNA. Konnan said that she complains about Jeff Jarrett all the time, but never pulls the trigger and gets him out of there.

- "All of the talent is frustrated there. No one watches the show," said Konnan. He added that the mid-card guys in the X Division are buried so bad and the people in power don't care.

- Said BG James, Kip James and Senshi have all asked for releases from TNA, but the company won't give it to them. He said he just straight up quit and they can't obligate him to work for them since TNA deals don't work like that.

- On getting involved in the media with the Chris Benoit situation, Konnan said quote, "They called me. I didn't call them."

- Said he felt we are all accessories to this (those in the wrestling industry). Felt it was his duty to speak up about the wrestling industry and steroids.

- Konnan said he wasn't afraid to speak his mind and that others won't because they are in fear they won't get a job with WWE.

- Said he didn't understand why so many wrestlers die and no one does a thing about it. He hoped by speaking out that someone in some type of power would step in and get some regulation.

- Said he has gotten some positive and negative feedback to speaking out in the media about what goes on behind-the-scenes with steroid use.

- His stance is that it will save lives and that wrestlers won't have to be on the road so much per year. "We are year round. And you have to take all these substances to stay in tip-top shape," said Konnan. "We are a different breed and put up with it because we love it."

- Said the only good thing that could come out of the Chris Benoit situation is that more attention could get put on the bad things in wrestling.

To be fair, Konan hasn't wrestled in TNA in a long time which was before his kidney problems. And he also quit wrestling because of his hip, I don't think it was that bad when he first started working there and it just was a gradual worsening of his hip.

Eh, it happens.

Those bastards. How dare they ask for their money back after they loaned it too him.

- Konnan said he could never understand why when he would go to TNA and would ask for more money why that would tell him they couldn't, but were re-signing Christian Cage and giving Kurt Angle and Sting huge contracts.

Yeah it makes no sence to pay some midcard mexican less than proven draws and for lack of a better term, legends.

What's this loaning of money? IMO, if you hire a wrestler and he's got medical issues or not, it's your duty as the employer of a sporting organization to pay for their surgeries when the time comes.

Seriously, who is Konnan? He has had decent runs with WCW and TNA, but in no way was he ever the draw. Konnan makes Shane Douglas look like a company man.

He's one of the biggest draws ever with the Latino fan base. I already gave my opinion on this in the news section. Konnan deserved more money this year for the fact that he put together the whole LAX thing. I guarantee the presentation of LAX was mostly Konnan's ideas. They were hot in the company for a while. He'd be an asset anywhere he went, especially for his wrestling mind.

I'm basing that solely on the sheer number of times I've also heard them called the "biggest draws with the latino community." Any time some latino freak boy with any kind of name recognition comes up someone calls them that. I fail to see how Konnan is any different in that respect.

it was all in the presentation, not just the blueprint. You can come up with great angles all day long, but if you don't present it in a colorful way, it will flop. The music, the entrance, LAX announcers and fans, the shirts, that was what made LAX work. That was all Konnan.

Yeah, where would the wrestling world be without Max Moon... :shifty:

Maybe the guy is the biggest thing in Mexico since the Sombrero, maybe he's the biggest thing in Cuba since the cigar, maybe he's the biggest thing in the Dominican Republic since Roberto Clemente. Doesn't really change the fact that I hear this crap over and over again... it still doesn't mean they're worth crap in WWE, TNA, or any of it. I'm not sure how I got drawn into this discussion in any case when being "the biggest draw in the latino world" doesn't mean anything more to me than that argument a few months back about that KENTA guy being the biggest draw in Japan or whatever. Doesn't make me care about them either way.

But it did give me a chance to post a picture of Max Moon, and I thank you for that if nothing else.

Weren't you the guy who was defending this as somehow being different?

BDC talking about drawing aside, he's right.

No, wait. BDC's right about drawing, too. Where's the ratings to demonstrate he's a draw in TNA? So either he's not a draw, or the country is filled with white American wrestling fans, because if the LAtino Market was drawing, it'd show.

Konnan brought all the great WCW cruiserweights to WCW either from AAA or ECW, it was his doing.

#1-norm-fan
07-11-2007, 04:26 PM
So? He took a ton of guys who didn't really draw much at all (Like it or not, it's a fact.) and brought them from one US based company to another. What's your point? Where are all those great cruiserweights now? Any companies that make money off of the lucha style would be doing so anyway based on Heyman bringing them into ECW in the first place.

As for the big leagues, Eddie and Rey have undeniably broken the barrier of just being some luchador competing in the cruiserweight division.

#1-norm-fan
07-11-2007, 04:32 PM
I should clarify that by "guys who didn't really draw much at all" I am saying the luchadores weren't big draws in WCW. Saying that Konnan contributed more to wrestling than Mysterio because he brought them to WCW, you're basing it on WCW's cruiserweight division which people enjoyed just fine and look back on with fine memories but in the end, which of those luchadores that came over actually went on to be a decent draw?

we're not saying the basic premise of the gimmick was never around before. Yes, Los Boricuas was basically a Hispanic thug gimmick, but how did they do? Yes, there has been thug gimmicks before. But the basic gimmick is not was made LAX. The presentation, the actual backstory to the group, and the in your face angles they shot made them.

To me at least, the LAX gimmick and angle stood out from the pack. Some things they did that really stood out? They had a seperate entrance from everybody else in TNA. Konnan put a "border" around the Spanish Announce Table and declared it was "Latinos Only" The group had thier own personal anouncer introduce them. Thier entrance video and music and the way the screen went back and forth with quick cuts between the video and the LAX fans during the entrance was really cool.

And TNA pushed them to be thugs and didn't really pussify anything about them. They laid guys out and "injured" some guys badly. I loved the spot where Konnan held Chris Harri's hand on a brick wall and I think Homicide picked up the guardrail and rammed it right into it. The Spanish/Latino fans got behind them quick, which made for real cool TV because Florida has a good sized Latino base. You could see LAX shirts in about 50% of the arena. They were real heels in the TNA arena at first, which you'll know is hard to be. They did start getting more cheers then boos, which I expected.

As a wrestling fan in 2007, LAX brought something exciting to the table. It breathed some life into TNA. It was based off real situations and they didn't handicap it, especially in the beginning. TNA is going to miss this on their programming and in their arena.

Ayway, Konnan is pretty innovative. I mean, being a Latin Gangster isn't original, but the specifics...Being exactly like every other Latino Gangster, but throwing shoes and speaking in Spanish! And those are the things that got him over to these unproven numbers of people!

That means we'd have to buy new pitchforks in Japan, because I don't think you're allowed to carry pitchforks onto a plane.

Oh, swords. But they would be alot messier than pitchforks.

We'd have a place to hide too, I have some family that live in Tokyo.
